How to Hear God | Week 3: Submission

We can all hear from God, but sometimes it’s confusing. But when we take what we hear and bring it to community, we can gain clarity on what God is saying to us. More importantly, we get the accountability we need to actually act on what God is saying. You’ll never receive the full benefits of God speaking to you if you try to go it alone.

1
00:00:51.620 --> 00:00:53.250
How's it going,
Crossroads Anywhere?

2
00:00:53.300 --> 00:00:54.200
My name is Malcolm.

3
00:00:54.260 --> 00:00:57.110
I'm the community pastor here
at our Florence, Kentucky

4
00:00:57.110 --> 00:00:57.560
location.

5
00:00:57.560 --> 00:01:00.260
We're actually in the building
right now about to start

6
00:01:00.260 --> 00:01:00.770
services.

7
00:01:00.800 --> 00:01:04.250
And there's other locations like
this and groups meeting all

8
00:01:04.460 --> 00:01:05.510
around the country.

9
00:01:05.540 --> 00:01:07.790
You've can go
to Crossroads.net/locations

10
00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:09.250
to find one near you.

11
00:01:09.260 --> 00:01:11.870
Right now we're about to get
service start or we're about to

12
00:01:11.870 --> 00:01:13.340
actually have a time to worship.

13
00:01:13.550 --> 00:01:16.400
So I'd love it if everyone would
stand, turn up the volume, and

14
00:01:16.400 --> 00:01:18.240
let's sing these songs together.

15
00:04:01.830 --> 00:04:06.050
This is my story of being
broken and lost and encountering a

16
00:04:06.050 --> 00:04:06.430
savior.

17
00:04:06.550 --> 00:04:08.720
And if it's yours,
sing along like this.

18
00:10:38.390 --> 00:10:43.520
God, we thank you for the way
that you brought us to you, that

19
00:10:43.520 --> 00:10:44.680
you bring us to you.

20
00:10:47.720 --> 00:10:51.920
God, we're here because we want
to experience hearing from you.

21
00:10:52.860 --> 00:10:55.820
Maybe we didn't say it with our
words, but we said it with our

22
00:10:55.820 --> 00:10:59.540
steps into this place, with our
clicks to watch this on our

23
00:10:59.540 --> 00:11:00.890
phone or on our computer.

24
00:11:03.190 --> 00:11:05.220
In silent ways we're saying,

25
00:11:05.380 --> 00:11:05.670
God, speak. We need to hear you speak, that's why
we're here. It's in Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

26
00:11:17.560 --> 00:11:19.750
Man, you guys, it's
just great worshiping with

27
00:11:19.750 --> 00:11:20.040
you, it really is.

28
00:11:23.970 --> 00:11:29.180
And you know, we do this
every day at 8:30 on Facebook.

29
00:11:29.750 --> 00:11:30.360
Did you know that?

30
00:11:30.970 --> 00:11:31.890
A few of you did. Yeah.

31
00:11:32.450 --> 00:11:33.050
My people.

32
00:11:33.630 --> 00:11:36.110
Hey, if you want to join us, we'd
love to have you join us at

33
00:11:36.110 --> 00:11:37.160
8:30 in the morning.

34
00:11:37.160 --> 00:11:40.160
Just go to Oakley's Facebook page
and there's a bunch of people

35
00:11:40.160 --> 00:11:42.920
hanging out there and I'll see
you there leading worship in the

36
00:11:42.920 --> 00:11:43.430
morning time.

37
00:11:44.330 --> 00:11:47.300
Another way this big place feels
small is when you introduce

38
00:11:47.300 --> 00:11:48.020
yourself to somebody.

39
00:11:48.020 --> 00:11:50.690
So, say hi to somebody that you
don't know yet and then have a

40
00:11:50.690 --> 00:11:51.080
quick seat.

41
00:11:51.130 --> 00:11:51.270
All right.

42
00:12:06.500 --> 00:12:11.090
One thing you may not know is
that hundreds of students from all

43
00:12:11.090 --> 00:12:15.470
of our Crossroads sites went to
summer camp this weekend and

44
00:12:15.470 --> 00:12:17.360
had -- not this
weekend, this summer.

45
00:12:17.560 --> 00:12:20.930
It's just one big weekend called
the summer for my kids.

46
00:12:22.310 --> 00:12:24.110
They went to camp and
they had an amazing time.

47
00:12:24.230 --> 00:12:25.100
Would you like to see it?

48
00:12:26.150 --> 00:12:26.600
Here you go.

49
00:12:49.850 --> 00:12:49.940
>> Camp is awesome!

50
00:12:49.940 --> 00:12:54.180
>> I think camp was a great
way to connect with others and God.

51
00:12:54.260 --> 00:12:57.810
>> It definitely has something special
here because I know, but

52
00:12:58.380 --> 00:13:01.740
it definitely changed my life for
the better and I would highly

53
00:13:01.740 --> 00:13:02.880
recommend it to anyone.

54
00:13:03.510 --> 00:13:05.660
>> It's just a
good experience. There's like

55
00:13:06.120 --> 00:13:09.030
everything to help you push through
all your problems and then

56
00:13:09.070 --> 00:13:10.370
just like have fun.

57
00:13:10.440 --> 00:13:12.870
>> It's open to everyone,
which means there's diverse people,

58
00:13:12.870 --> 00:13:13.980
there's diverse friend groups.

59
00:13:14.460 --> 00:13:17.220
And just interacting with so
many different kinds of people

60
00:13:17.640 --> 00:13:19.560
means you get better connection
than I think you'd find

61
00:13:19.560 --> 00:13:20.190
anywhere else.

62
00:13:20.700 --> 00:13:22.350
>> When I heard no
phone I was scared.

63
00:13:22.350 --> 00:13:23.160
But when I came here.

64
00:13:23.160 --> 00:13:23.170
>> You don't need a phone!

65
00:13:23.170 --> 00:13:23.180
[music]

66
00:14:08.250 --> 00:14:10.300
Man, wasn't that incredible.

67
00:14:10.330 --> 00:14:11.980
I love student camps.

68
00:14:12.190 --> 00:14:14.740
Hi, my name is Malcolm, if
we haven't met, I'm the Florence

69
00:14:14.740 --> 00:14:15.580
community pastor.

70
00:14:15.580 --> 00:14:17.970
We're actually in the
building right now.

71
00:14:17.980 --> 00:14:21.250
And if you thought that was
amazing, it's because it was.

72
00:14:21.250 --> 00:14:24.370
I actually got a chance to
go to camps this year.

73
00:14:24.370 --> 00:14:27.940
And I walked in and saw an
environment for students and it was

74
00:14:27.940 --> 00:14:29.920
designed specifically for them.

75
00:14:30.040 --> 00:14:33.040
And I got to watch over 40
students raise their hand and say, "I

76
00:14:33.040 --> 00:14:34.410
want to follow Jesus.

77
00:14:34.420 --> 00:14:36.610
I want to start doing that
for the rest of my life.".

78
00:14:36.610 --> 00:14:37.510
And it was incredible.

79
00:14:37.870 --> 00:14:41.410
And students aren't the only group
of people that have an

80
00:14:41.410 --> 00:14:43.570
environment like that designed
specifically for them.

81
00:14:43.570 --> 00:14:45.370
We actually have adult camps.

82
00:14:45.370 --> 00:14:49.620
And this fall we have Man
Camp, Couples Camp and College Camp.

83
00:14:49.640 --> 00:14:53.080
And ladies, don't worry, we have
Woman Camp coming this spring.

84
00:14:53.770 --> 00:14:56.530
Camps are all about just getting
out of your comfort zone,

85
00:14:56.710 --> 00:14:58.930
detaching from the
every day grind.

86
00:14:58.930 --> 00:15:01.540
And when we do that, we
typically realize that we get connected

87
00:15:01.570 --> 00:15:04.010
into community and
we grow spiritually.

88
00:15:04.090 --> 00:15:06.640
And if that's interesting to you
and you want more information

89
00:15:06.640 --> 00:15:09.430
about that, you
go to Crossroads.net/camps

90
00:15:09.430 --> 00:15:10.380
and all the info is there.

91
00:15:10.390 --> 00:15:11.320
What do I need to bring?

92
00:15:11.320 --> 00:15:11.920
When is it?

93
00:15:11.950 --> 00:15:12.850
How much does it cost?

94
00:15:13.120 --> 00:15:16.990
All of that is there right for you,
you can sign up on the spot.

95
00:15:17.770 --> 00:15:20.050
Like I said, we're in
the Florence building right now.

96
00:15:20.050 --> 00:15:22.990
And if you live in Florence or
if you live somewhere close in

97
00:15:22.990 --> 00:15:25.720
Northern Kentucky and you haven't
physically made it to the

98
00:15:25.720 --> 00:15:28.660
building in person on a weekend,
you've got to get here.

99
00:15:28.680 --> 00:15:31.420
It's just good to, like I
said, be connected into community.

100
00:15:31.450 --> 00:15:34.840
We have found that people want to
be known and they want to know

101
00:15:34.840 --> 00:15:35.170
others.

102
00:15:35.170 --> 00:15:37.480
And I'm assuming that that
is your case, too.

103
00:15:37.480 --> 00:15:40.960
And if you want to rub elbows
with a few people, enjoy some free

104
00:15:40.960 --> 00:15:44.470
Wi-Fi, some hot coffee, come in
the building and enjoy a

105
00:15:44.470 --> 00:15:45.470
weekend experience.

106
00:15:45.490 --> 00:15:46.360
I would love to meet you.

107
00:15:46.600 --> 00:15:47.800
I would love to hear your story.

108
00:15:47.800 --> 00:15:49.690
And I got a little
gift like this cup.

109
00:15:49.720 --> 00:15:51.850
There's gonna be some good stuff
inside the cup as well.

110
00:15:51.880 --> 00:15:54.790
But I would love to meet
you and hear your story.

111
00:15:55.210 --> 00:15:56.550
Camps are happening this fall.

112
00:15:56.560 --> 00:16:00.130
What else is happening this fall
is our all church Journey.

113
00:16:00.160 --> 00:16:02.890
It's a time when we take about
five weeks to hone in on a

114
00:16:02.890 --> 00:16:03.820
specific topic.

115
00:16:04.120 --> 00:16:06.910
And this year, we're talking
about play and purpose.

116
00:16:06.910 --> 00:16:09.700
Our senior pastor, Brian Tome, that
said that when you want a

117
00:16:09.700 --> 00:16:12.700
life of prosperity, you need
both play and purpose.

118
00:16:12.700 --> 00:16:13.990
And that's what
we're focusing on.

119
00:16:14.470 --> 00:16:15.960
There's three components
of a Journey.

120
00:16:15.970 --> 00:16:17.860
The first one is
the weekend message.

121
00:16:17.860 --> 00:16:19.450
You'll want to make sure
that you're watching that.

122
00:16:19.690 --> 00:16:23.080
The second is some individual work
that you'll take the concepts

123
00:16:23.080 --> 00:16:25.840
from the weekend message and just
apply them and kind of work

124
00:16:25.840 --> 00:16:26.440
through those things.

125
00:16:26.440 --> 00:16:28.660
And the third is that you're
going to process those same

126
00:16:28.660 --> 00:16:32.020
concepts in a group setting and
we're looking for people to

127
00:16:32.020 --> 00:16:33.240
lead those groups.

128
00:16:33.250 --> 00:16:34.270
It's not rocket science.

129
00:16:34.270 --> 00:16:36.340
You don't have to be
an expert on the Bible.

130
00:16:36.370 --> 00:16:38.590
But we would love for you
to lead a Journey group.

131
00:16:38.590 --> 00:16:41.320
And if you want more
information on what that looks

132
00:16:41.320 --> 00:16:43.930
like, you can
go to Crossroads.net/journey,

133
00:16:44.050 --> 00:16:46.840
read about it and sign
up to lead a group.

134
00:16:47.590 --> 00:16:49.930
Right now, we're going to have
an opportunity to be generous as

135
00:16:49.930 --> 00:16:50.530
a community.

136
00:16:50.770 --> 00:16:53.500
And for me, I give because
when I give, I'm just practicing

137
00:16:53.710 --> 00:16:54.550
being obedient.

138
00:16:54.550 --> 00:16:58.420
I'm putting myself beneath God and
saying, "God, I want to put

139
00:16:58.480 --> 00:16:59.200
you first.".

140
00:16:59.230 --> 00:17:01.050
And we do that, one easy way
around here, you can go to

141
00:17:01.060 --> 00:17:04.330
Crossroads.net/give and give
that way.

142
00:17:04.360 --> 00:17:07.060
And while we do that, we're gonna
take a look at a story from

143
00:17:07.060 --> 00:17:10.570
someone in our community about
how they're hearing from God.

144
00:17:10.750 --> 00:17:11.230
Check it out.

145
00:17:13.900 --> 00:17:17.080
>> I'm Lori and God
speaks to me through community.

146
00:17:17.950 --> 00:17:20.860
So the first time I think I
ever really heard God speak to me

147
00:17:20.860 --> 00:17:23.410
was when I was
working full time.

148
00:17:23.560 --> 00:17:24.730
I loved my job.

149
00:17:24.790 --> 00:17:25.960
I love my career.

150
00:17:26.290 --> 00:17:29.530
I started to see that I was
not spending as much time with my

151
00:17:29.560 --> 00:17:33.550
kids and focusing on my family
as I wished I would.

152
00:17:33.760 --> 00:17:37.840
I had this dream one weekend and
all night long I just kept

153
00:17:37.840 --> 00:17:40.960
hearing kind of just like a song
that you cannot get out of

154
00:17:40.960 --> 00:17:41.510
your head.

155
00:17:41.530 --> 00:17:44.260
And it was just like everything you
do, do it for your family

156
00:17:44.260 --> 00:17:44.710
first.

157
00:17:44.770 --> 00:17:47.800
So I just woke up the next day
and I was like, "David, I think

158
00:17:47.800 --> 00:17:48.510
we need to talk.".

159
00:17:48.880 --> 00:17:51.280
That just kind of launched in
this whole conversation that ended

160
00:17:51.280 --> 00:17:55.780
me sort of in a new path
away from the corporate journey that I

161
00:17:55.780 --> 00:17:56.290
had been on.

162
00:17:56.500 --> 00:18:01.090
After I had been kind of at
home raising kids for a couple of

163
00:18:01.090 --> 00:18:06.930
years, I was walking down the street
and I looked at a shop.

164
00:18:07.150 --> 00:18:11.350
It was like time stopped and I
saw a picture of what this place

165
00:18:11.350 --> 00:18:11.800
could be.

166
00:18:11.920 --> 00:18:15.010
I saw a picture of
a community coffee shop.

167
00:18:15.010 --> 00:18:18.730
And after I talked to my husband
about it, we decided that we

168
00:18:18.730 --> 00:18:20.110
should take it to our group.

169
00:18:20.170 --> 00:18:25.090
We should ask them if they could
take this to God on our behalf.

170
00:18:25.300 --> 00:18:28.090
Everyone sort of had these private
moments that they had, but

171
00:18:28.090 --> 00:18:30.760
then we got back together in a
group and we shared all of it.

172
00:18:30.820 --> 00:18:35.500
It was encouraging to hear that
God had spoken so similarly

173
00:18:35.500 --> 00:18:40.360
between different people enough so that
we felt a good amount

174
00:18:40.360 --> 00:18:42.760
of confidence that this is something
that we were being called

175
00:18:42.760 --> 00:18:43.060
to.

176
00:18:43.360 --> 00:18:48.610
So we opened it with lots
of help from lots of people.

177
00:18:48.700 --> 00:18:50.200
And it was really fun.

178
00:18:50.230 --> 00:18:55.120
And we had some really, really
great times and great moments in

179
00:18:55.120 --> 00:18:55.390
that.

180
00:18:55.480 --> 00:18:59.380
Last year, I just started to feel
like maybe it was time for the

181
00:18:59.380 --> 00:19:00.740
torch to be passed.

182
00:19:00.820 --> 00:19:03.460
And I thought, huh,
this is interesting.

183
00:19:03.940 --> 00:19:07.630
Maybe I ought to, you know, continue
to pray about this or talk

184
00:19:07.630 --> 00:19:08.770
to my husband about this.

185
00:19:09.280 --> 00:19:11.140
So I did.

186
00:19:11.230 --> 00:19:15.730
What he prayed was that we would
just get a real really clear

187
00:19:15.730 --> 00:19:19.950
sign over the next couple days
about just a next step.

188
00:19:19.960 --> 00:19:24.550
In the morning, one of my regular
customers came in and he said,

189
00:19:24.820 --> 00:19:28.920
"OK, this is really weird, but
I had this dream last night.

190
00:19:29.320 --> 00:19:32.680
And in my dream, you guys
were selling this coffee shop."

191
00:19:32.830 --> 00:19:34.930
And I was like,
wow, that's really weird.

192
00:19:37.150 --> 00:19:40.750
Then Friday, another person in
our community came forward and

193
00:19:40.750 --> 00:19:45.070
said that they had had another dream
that we were going to be

194
00:19:45.070 --> 00:19:46.000
selling the coffee shop.

195
00:19:46.150 --> 00:19:50.320
I'm feeling like this is time to
pass it on to someone who will

196
00:19:50.320 --> 00:19:51.340
take care of it.

197
00:19:51.370 --> 00:19:55.210
In January, I think we wrote sort
of a letter to the community

198
00:19:55.240 --> 00:19:58.420
and we just said that we
were thinking about looking for the

199
00:19:58.420 --> 00:20:00.390
next right owners.

200
00:20:00.580 --> 00:20:04.110
And very quickly the
perfect family came along.

201
00:20:04.300 --> 00:20:09.610
Definitely could not have done
any of this without community.

202
00:20:09.670 --> 00:20:16.720
From building the space to how
to sell a business, community has

203
00:20:16.720 --> 00:20:18.490
been such a huge part.

204
00:20:20.680 --> 00:20:21.850
I hope they know that.

205
00:20:23.220 --> 00:20:23.550
Sorry.

206
00:20:25.150 --> 00:20:30.320
This whole process has just been
one gigantic hug from God.

207
00:20:31.550 --> 00:20:31.970
>> I love it.

208
00:20:32.450 --> 00:20:33.110
It's amazing.

209
00:20:34.340 --> 00:20:34.860
Hey, listen.

210
00:20:34.880 --> 00:20:38.720
By the way, just on behalf
of sleep deprived parents everywhere

211
00:20:39.140 --> 00:20:43.040
who struggled to get out of bed
in the morning and have to deal

212
00:20:43.040 --> 00:20:44.540
with their kids yet again,

213
00:20:44.600 --> 00:20:48.170
if you ever feel like God is
telling you to open a coffee shop,

214
00:20:48.500 --> 00:20:50.000
he absolutely is.

215
00:20:50.020 --> 00:20:50.660
Please do it.

216
00:20:50.690 --> 00:20:51.860
We need your coffee.

217
00:20:52.040 --> 00:20:52.730
Thank you.

218
00:20:52.970 --> 00:20:55.910
Also, this may be prophetic, I
think God's telling somebody in

219
00:20:55.910 --> 00:20:58.730
this room to start
a coffee delivery service.

220
00:20:58.760 --> 00:20:59.510
That's what I think.

221
00:21:00.020 --> 00:21:02.060
I will leave my window open and
you can just put it on my

222
00:21:02.060 --> 00:21:02.870
bedside table.

223
00:21:02.900 --> 00:21:03.950
That will be magical.

224
00:21:04.340 --> 00:21:04.870
Just consider it.

225
00:21:04.880 --> 00:21:05.960
Maybe God's saying it to
you, I don't know.

226
00:21:06.500 --> 00:21:08.360
Hey, my name is Kyle,
if you've never met before.

227
00:21:08.780 --> 00:21:11.630
I'm part of the staff here, been
on staff about 14 years, part

228
00:21:11.630 --> 00:21:12.650
of our leadership team.

229
00:21:12.650 --> 00:21:13.960
And I get to talk to you today.

230
00:21:13.970 --> 00:21:17.180
And I want you to know right up
front, I have an agenda, a very

231
00:21:17.180 --> 00:21:18.410
unapologetic agenda.

232
00:21:18.440 --> 00:21:22.640
And my agenda is this: I hope
to motivate you to do a Journey

233
00:21:22.640 --> 00:21:23.160
group today.

234
00:21:24.020 --> 00:21:24.470
I do.

235
00:21:24.710 --> 00:21:27.770
And the reason I do is
because joining a Journey group has

236
00:21:27.770 --> 00:21:28.790
changed my life.

237
00:21:29.330 --> 00:21:30.560
Completely changed my life.

238
00:21:30.980 --> 00:21:33.440
About 15 years ago I
did a Journey group.

239
00:21:33.470 --> 00:21:34.670
It was called the Life Journey.

240
00:21:34.700 --> 00:21:36.500
Any Life Journey
veterans out there?

241
00:21:36.500 --> 00:21:36.890
Anybody, yeah?

242
00:21:36.920 --> 00:21:42.170
A long time ago and I met two
guys, I met Greg and Jason who are

243
00:21:42.170 --> 00:21:43.400
still in my life to this day.

244
00:21:43.430 --> 00:21:46.100
I would consider them something called
a wise counselor in my

245
00:21:46.100 --> 00:21:46.370
life.

246
00:21:46.730 --> 00:21:49.670
Eight years ago, I met two more
guys who have stuck with me.

247
00:21:49.850 --> 00:21:52.810
Guys named Matt and Walker
in the Strong Challenging.

248
00:21:52.810 --> 00:21:54.560
Anybody do the Strong
Challenge out there?

249
00:21:54.830 --> 00:21:56.630
Strong challenge, great journey.

250
00:21:57.000 --> 00:22:00.170
And so I hope to convince
you to experience what I have

251
00:22:00.170 --> 00:22:03.680
experienced, to find people who
can change your life.

252
00:22:04.250 --> 00:22:07.160
These guys haven't just changed my
life, they've helped me Hear

253
00:22:07.160 --> 00:22:10.310
from God, that's the series that we're
in, by the way, How to

254
00:22:10.310 --> 00:22:11.410
Hear God.

255
00:22:11.480 --> 00:22:12.550
It's a radical series.

256
00:22:12.560 --> 00:22:13.790
It's a controversial series.

257
00:22:13.790 --> 00:22:16.280
I don't know if you're feeling that
yet, but I would propose to

258
00:22:16.280 --> 00:22:19.460
you, there's nothing more controversial
we could possibly say

259
00:22:19.460 --> 00:22:21.920
to you than this claim that
we're making in this series, which

260
00:22:21.920 --> 00:22:26.330
is no matter who you
are, you can hear God.

261
00:22:27.050 --> 00:22:29.480
Now, it's controversial, it's radical
on a couple of different

262
00:22:29.480 --> 00:22:30.500
fronts.

263
00:22:30.500 --> 00:22:32.300
One, compared to
other world religions.

264
00:22:32.330 --> 00:22:34.580
If you've done any research on
world religions, you'll know that

265
00:22:34.580 --> 00:22:38.120
this notion that all religions are the
same does not hold up at

266
00:22:38.120 --> 00:22:38.660
all.

267
00:22:39.230 --> 00:22:43.310
Just look at hearing from God and
you'll see that Gods and the

268
00:22:43.310 --> 00:22:46.460
God figures in different religions
are wildly different on this

269
00:22:46.460 --> 00:22:46.580
one.

270
00:22:46.580 --> 00:22:50.690
In fact, almost all of them don't
talk to anybody, not even a

271
00:22:50.690 --> 00:22:51.170
person.

272
00:22:51.380 --> 00:22:54.320
And the ones that do only talk
to either people who lived a very

273
00:22:54.320 --> 00:22:57.890
long time ago and no longer talk,
or only talk to the special

274
00:22:57.890 --> 00:23:00.700
people, which is very convenient
for those people, isn't it?

275
00:23:02.060 --> 00:23:04.790
It's also controversial inside the
church world because when it

276
00:23:04.790 --> 00:23:06.590
comes to the church world,
you see, we interpret this

277
00:23:06.590 --> 00:23:10.340
verse, this verse that Chuck laid
out in Week One, Jeremiah

278
00:23:10.340 --> 00:23:11.720
33:3 to the extreme.

279
00:23:11.720 --> 00:23:11.990
It says:

280
00:23:18.380 --> 00:23:19.310
That's God speaking.

281
00:23:19.610 --> 00:23:21.830
Call to me and
I will answer you.

282
00:23:21.830 --> 00:23:24.620
And see here at Crossroads, we
don't think this was a promise

283
00:23:24.620 --> 00:23:27.920
made a long time ago to people
way back when or only to the

284
00:23:27.920 --> 00:23:28.730
special people.

285
00:23:28.850 --> 00:23:32.390
We think this is a promise made to
all of us and that makes us

286
00:23:32.390 --> 00:23:32.990
very different.

287
00:23:33.440 --> 00:23:37.310
And I hope that that's wildly
exciting and encouraging to you.

288
00:23:37.570 --> 00:23:39.770
That what we're talking about
today, How to Hear God.

289
00:23:40.040 --> 00:23:42.890
And specifically what I'm going to
do today I'm going to poke

290
00:23:42.890 --> 00:23:43.670
you in the chest.

291
00:23:44.030 --> 00:23:46.730
I'm just gonna do
this, just (sound effect).

292
00:23:46.730 --> 00:23:49.130
If it starts to feel that way,
good, that's what I'm going for.

293
00:23:49.880 --> 00:23:53.840
Because I'm going to go after what I
think is a lie that sits at

294
00:23:53.840 --> 00:23:57.250
the very center of what it
means to be an American.

295
00:23:57.260 --> 00:24:01.790
And I believe that lie may
be holding you back from clearly

296
00:24:01.790 --> 00:24:04.760
hearing God's direction
for your life.

297
00:24:05.450 --> 00:24:08.680
Before we talk about that or
go any further, let's pray.

298
00:24:09.750 --> 00:24:12.320
God, I just ask for you to
say what You want to say.

299
00:24:12.350 --> 00:24:14.300
And I ask for all of
us to clearly hear You.

300
00:24:14.420 --> 00:24:16.260
I don't want my
words to be heard.

301
00:24:16.280 --> 00:24:17.360
I want Your words to be heard.

302
00:24:17.420 --> 00:24:19.100
So please do that.

303
00:24:19.370 --> 00:24:20.120
Please talk to us.

304
00:24:20.360 --> 00:24:22.040
Please instruct us
and we'll listen.

305
00:24:22.700 --> 00:24:22.900
Amen.

306
00:24:24.730 --> 00:24:29.470
Well, today is about how to
hear God's direction for your life.

307
00:24:30.460 --> 00:24:33.070
How do you hear God's
direction for your life?

308
00:24:33.070 --> 00:24:36.130
And by direction, I don't
mean small things, little things.

309
00:24:36.380 --> 00:24:38.230
And I don't mean
things like encouragements.

310
00:24:38.260 --> 00:24:40.650
You know, God can talk to you
and give you an encouragement or

311
00:24:40.660 --> 00:24:41.680
He can give you
a little instruction.

312
00:24:41.920 --> 00:24:45.610
I mean direction, like big
direction, decisions that can

313
00:24:45.610 --> 00:24:47.530
determine the course
of your life.

314
00:24:47.590 --> 00:24:49.450
How do you hear God on those?

315
00:24:49.450 --> 00:24:52.270
Things like, do you go to
college or not go to college?

316
00:24:52.560 --> 00:24:54.520
And which major do you pick
once you get to college?

317
00:24:54.520 --> 00:24:56.560
And if you don't like the
major, do you switch majors?

318
00:24:56.680 --> 00:24:57.640
And should you date that girl?

319
00:24:57.640 --> 00:24:58.450
Should you date that guy?

320
00:24:58.480 --> 00:24:59.290
What about marrying them?

321
00:24:59.290 --> 00:24:59.920
Should you marry them?

322
00:24:59.920 --> 00:25:00.880
Should you move
into the apartment?

323
00:25:01.030 --> 00:25:01.790
Should you buy the house?

324
00:25:01.790 --> 00:25:02.560
Should you take the job?

325
00:25:02.570 --> 00:25:03.430
Should you quit the job?

326
00:25:03.670 --> 00:25:04.240
Should you move?

327
00:25:04.240 --> 00:25:05.020
Should you stay?

328
00:25:05.230 --> 00:25:05.780
Should you retire?

329
00:25:05.800 --> 00:25:06.790
Should you not retire?

330
00:25:07.000 --> 00:25:08.760
Should you drink beer before
liquor or vice versa?

331
00:25:08.790 --> 00:25:09.700
I can't remember the riddle.

332
00:25:09.820 --> 00:25:11.080
It's been a long
time since college.

333
00:25:11.350 --> 00:25:12.610
Big decisions, you know.

334
00:25:13.540 --> 00:25:14.230
How do you make them?

335
00:25:15.010 --> 00:25:17.290
How do you hear God on
those things in your life?

336
00:25:18.420 --> 00:25:21.310
And maybe, just maybe you're making
one of those right now.

337
00:25:21.670 --> 00:25:22.540
Maybe you're in that spot.

338
00:25:23.590 --> 00:25:28.680
I made a decision, a major
decision a while ago, actually.

339
00:25:28.800 --> 00:25:31.030
But it's time for me
to tell you about it.

340
00:25:31.540 --> 00:25:34.600
And that is that I decided a
while ago to leave my job at

341
00:25:34.600 --> 00:25:35.290
Crossroads.

342
00:25:36.260 --> 00:25:39.190
And I would love to walk
you through why, because what's most

343
00:25:39.190 --> 00:25:43.030
important to me is I want you
to see and understand that in

344
00:25:43.030 --> 00:25:47.740
making this decision, I did my
very best to hear from God.

345
00:25:48.630 --> 00:25:50.140
And in fact, I'll
walk you through it.

346
00:25:50.170 --> 00:25:54.580
But I would say based on what I
could see, based on what I could

347
00:25:54.580 --> 00:25:57.730
hear, I made a great
decision, made a great decision.

348
00:25:57.820 --> 00:26:02.230
For context, when I just made this
decision, I'd been in my job

349
00:26:02.350 --> 00:26:04.030
for seven straight years.

350
00:26:04.060 --> 00:26:04.840
Same job.

351
00:26:05.170 --> 00:26:05.800
Same job.

352
00:26:06.220 --> 00:26:08.530
And I liked my job,
but it was monotonous.

353
00:26:08.620 --> 00:26:12.310
It was like the same thing just
over and over and over and over

354
00:26:12.490 --> 00:26:13.180
and over again.

355
00:26:13.210 --> 00:26:15.700
It was monotony, I didn't feel
like I was getting anywhere.

356
00:26:16.330 --> 00:26:19.720
I had heard from God years
before through some people who would

357
00:26:19.720 --> 00:26:23.350
say these sorts of things to me
and that God had other plans

358
00:26:23.350 --> 00:26:23.710
for me.

359
00:26:23.950 --> 00:26:26.740
That in my early thirties I'd
be part of leading a church.

360
00:26:27.520 --> 00:26:30.160
And when this -- I made this
decision, I wasn't -- that wasn't

361
00:26:30.160 --> 00:26:30.640
happening.

362
00:26:30.640 --> 00:26:32.140
And it wasn't on
the horizon for me.

363
00:26:32.170 --> 00:26:35.080
And I also heard things like one
day I would be teaching like on

364
00:26:35.080 --> 00:26:36.490
a stage, and
that wasn't happening.

365
00:26:38.530 --> 00:26:40.010
And then this word came to me.

366
00:26:40.030 --> 00:26:43.580
It was -- I say God said it,
but -- and this series, we're not

367
00:26:43.580 --> 00:26:45.720
talking about an audible
voice from heaven that

368
00:26:45.740 --> 00:26:49.400
goes, (character voice) "Thou shalt
do," you know, whatever?

369
00:26:49.490 --> 00:26:53.420
No, it's not that, it's like a
thought that kind of plops in

370
00:26:53.420 --> 00:26:55.580
your head and it feels like
it came from somewhere else.

371
00:26:55.580 --> 00:26:58.910
And I had one of those and
it was this phrase, "I'm taking you

372
00:26:59.090 --> 00:27:04.790
to green pastures," which means
like prosperity and freshness

373
00:27:05.000 --> 00:27:07.130
and newness, certainly
not monotony.

374
00:27:07.310 --> 00:27:10.610
And right about the time that
I heard that this unexpected job

375
00:27:10.610 --> 00:27:11.610
offer came my way.

376
00:27:11.630 --> 00:27:14.510
And I'm telling you, it
felt like green pastures.

377
00:27:14.960 --> 00:27:17.030
I'll take you through my pro/con
list that I kind of wrote

378
00:27:17.030 --> 00:27:20.110
together as I was making this
decision so you'll see, because I

379
00:27:20.120 --> 00:27:23.480
really want you to see I think
I made the best decision based

380
00:27:23.480 --> 00:27:24.080
on what I could hear.

381
00:27:24.100 --> 00:27:25.370
God say green pastures.

382
00:27:25.670 --> 00:27:27.830
I saw green pastures everywhere.

383
00:27:28.460 --> 00:27:29.690
First, it was a great job.

384
00:27:29.990 --> 00:27:30.830
A really great job.

385
00:27:31.430 --> 00:27:34.040
Director of Marketing for a
half billion dollar company.

386
00:27:34.820 --> 00:27:38.330
And my very first project
would be rebranding the entire

387
00:27:38.360 --> 00:27:39.940
company, which I was
so excited about.

388
00:27:40.050 --> 00:27:42.860
That's like my sweet spot, messaging
and how you craft a message

389
00:27:42.860 --> 00:27:45.380
to connect to an audience and
look, tone, feel, and experience

390
00:27:45.380 --> 00:27:47.750
and all of these things that are
core to me, core to how God

391
00:27:47.750 --> 00:27:48.210
wired me.

392
00:27:48.230 --> 00:27:50.120
I felt like this
is green pastures.

393
00:27:50.260 --> 00:27:52.790
That would be so much fun to
work on, it would be amazing.

394
00:27:53.100 --> 00:27:56.030
Second, I could literally see
green pastures from the office,

395
00:27:57.080 --> 00:27:57.790
literally.

396
00:27:58.160 --> 00:28:00.200
When I went there, they showed
me where my office would

397
00:28:00.200 --> 00:28:02.390
be and it's like floor to ceiling
glass and I could look out

398
00:28:02.420 --> 00:28:05.540
and I could see the Ohio
River and beyond the green pastures

399
00:28:05.540 --> 00:28:06.860
and rolling hills of Kentucky.

400
00:28:07.130 --> 00:28:08.270
Oh, beautiful.

401
00:28:08.570 --> 00:28:10.940
If you've ever seen my desk at
Crossroads, I have not seen the

402
00:28:10.940 --> 00:28:12.110
sun in 12 years.

403
00:28:13.290 --> 00:28:13.340
[laughter]

404
00:28:13.340 --> 00:28:13.760
You can't see.

405
00:28:13.850 --> 00:28:15.950
My wife's like, "Did you
see the rain today?".

406
00:28:16.050 --> 00:28:18.170
I'm like, "No, I had no
idea." It could have hailed, you

407
00:28:18.170 --> 00:28:20.300
know, like little
fire from heaven.

408
00:28:20.330 --> 00:28:21.500
I wouldn't -- I
would've miss it.

409
00:28:21.530 --> 00:28:22.010
I have no idea.

410
00:28:23.620 --> 00:28:26.750
Oh, and the last thing, this is
important, the job offer was for

411
00:28:26.750 --> 00:28:27.880
triple my income.

412
00:28:29.740 --> 00:28:30.070
Triple.

413
00:28:30.700 --> 00:28:31.700
Green pastures, indeed.

414
00:28:31.720 --> 00:28:31.940
Right?

415
00:28:33.110 --> 00:28:35.960
And it wasn't -- the money
wasn't about buying nicer stuff.

416
00:28:35.980 --> 00:28:39.070
See, the money for me meant I
could do important things, like I

417
00:28:39.070 --> 00:28:40.510
could send my kids to college.

418
00:28:40.540 --> 00:28:42.700
Like maybe it wasn't just green
pastures for me, but maybe this

419
00:28:42.700 --> 00:28:45.280
would have a ripple effect in my
family because at that time I

420
00:28:45.280 --> 00:28:47.470
had no idea how that
was going to happen.

421
00:28:47.470 --> 00:28:47.830
Right?

422
00:28:48.460 --> 00:28:49.450
Green pastures.

423
00:28:49.930 --> 00:28:51.790
And someday I could think
about not needing an income.

424
00:28:51.790 --> 00:28:53.590
Some day I could
think about actually retiring.

425
00:28:53.590 --> 00:28:55.300
I could do things like travel

426
00:28:55.300 --> 00:28:57.850
God's hardwired a love of travel
and new experience in me,

427
00:28:58.030 --> 00:28:59.170
that's green pastures for me.

428
00:28:59.180 --> 00:29:01.240
I saw green pastures everywhere.

429
00:29:01.830 --> 00:29:02.770
And so I went for it.

430
00:29:03.370 --> 00:29:03.980
Now the con list.

431
00:29:04.150 --> 00:29:05.680
We've got to talk with
con list too, I suppose.

432
00:29:05.840 --> 00:29:08.170
The con list was leaving
a job I love.

433
00:29:09.310 --> 00:29:10.930
And more specifically, leaving
people that I love

434
00:29:10.930 --> 00:29:14.350
here, co-workers that I love, people
that I love, and in the

435
00:29:14.350 --> 00:29:16.030
comfort of all of that.

436
00:29:16.990 --> 00:29:19.990
But I quickly realized something that,
see, when you leave a job

437
00:29:19.990 --> 00:29:22.090
at a church, you don't leave
the people because you don't leave

438
00:29:22.090 --> 00:29:22.690
the church.

439
00:29:22.690 --> 00:29:23.190
Right?

440
00:29:23.560 --> 00:29:24.250
This is great.

441
00:29:25.190 --> 00:29:25.660
This is great.

442
00:29:25.690 --> 00:29:27.890
I can keep these
relationships in my life.

443
00:29:27.920 --> 00:29:29.180
This is wonderful.

444
00:29:29.210 --> 00:29:32.390
And by the way, I noticed this
other thing that at Crossroads we

445
00:29:32.390 --> 00:29:34.820
have this habit of hiring
people who've had corporate

446
00:29:34.820 --> 00:29:37.400
leadership experience into
jobs at Crossroads.

447
00:29:37.410 --> 00:29:38.480
So I figured, you know what?

448
00:29:38.630 --> 00:29:42.260
I can leave, have new fresh experiences,
make a lot of money and

449
00:29:42.260 --> 00:29:43.760
come back someday anyway.

450
00:29:45.240 --> 00:29:45.810
Perfect.

451
00:29:46.980 --> 00:29:48.000
Right decision, right?

452
00:29:49.400 --> 00:29:52.130
Based on everything I could see,
based everything I could hear,

453
00:29:52.250 --> 00:29:54.560
I made the right decision.

454
00:29:55.820 --> 00:29:56.450
What about you?

455
00:29:56.900 --> 00:29:57.650
Let's talk about you.

456
00:29:57.860 --> 00:29:58.670
Enough about me, what about you?

457
00:29:59.420 --> 00:30:02.540
How do you make those decisions,
do you have a pro/con list?

458
00:30:03.470 --> 00:30:05.300
Do you seek out
good advice from people?

459
00:30:05.490 --> 00:30:06.620
"What do you think about this?

460
00:30:06.690 --> 00:30:07.550
You know, what about this?".

461
00:30:08.030 --> 00:30:08.640
Do you do that?

462
00:30:09.450 --> 00:30:11.990
I don't know your exact steps and
how they order, but I know how

463
00:30:11.990 --> 00:30:12.560
the end.

464
00:30:13.570 --> 00:30:17.650
They end in the same way that
mine end probably, you make the

465
00:30:17.650 --> 00:30:18.220
decision.

466
00:30:19.680 --> 00:30:23.250
You do, because this is America
and in America we are

467
00:30:23.250 --> 00:30:24.030
independent.

468
00:30:24.510 --> 00:30:27.690
We are the land of the free and
the home of we make our own

469
00:30:27.690 --> 00:30:28.710
decisions, aren't we?

470
00:30:30.460 --> 00:30:31.930
It's the core of what it
means to be an American is

471
00:30:32.020 --> 00:30:32.770
independence.

472
00:30:32.770 --> 00:30:35.770
And listen, caveat, I
am pro freedom.

473
00:30:36.490 --> 00:30:37.540
I am pro justice.

474
00:30:37.600 --> 00:30:38.800
I am pro democracy.

475
00:30:39.010 --> 00:30:39.890
I love those things.

476
00:30:39.910 --> 00:30:41.050
I'm grateful for those things.

477
00:30:41.230 --> 00:30:43.900
I'm grateful for the men and the
women who have given up their

478
00:30:43.900 --> 00:30:45.430
lives so I can
enjoy those things.

479
00:30:45.430 --> 00:30:46.420
I am, I love them.

480
00:30:46.900 --> 00:30:51.880
But I want you to see
this: independence -- independence is a

481
00:30:51.880 --> 00:30:54.580
bias that we all have.

482
00:30:55.450 --> 00:31:00.360
And it doesn't just bias us and
color our view on some things.

483
00:31:02.040 --> 00:31:07.140
It's a bias on everything, including
how we see God, including

484
00:31:07.410 --> 00:31:10.230
how we view hearing God.

485
00:31:10.980 --> 00:31:12.270
It's a bias of independence.

486
00:31:12.720 --> 00:31:18.060
And the thing is, God seems
very much less interested in

487
00:31:18.060 --> 00:31:20.670
independent living than you
and I are.

488
00:31:22.460 --> 00:31:24.830
If anything, he wants the
opposite, it seems like.

489
00:31:26.080 --> 00:31:31.240
So, listen, while it's true, I'm
telling you this today, you can

490
00:31:31.300 --> 00:31:37.480
no matter who you are, good
news, you can hear God's direction

491
00:31:37.570 --> 00:31:38.710
for your life.

492
00:31:38.950 --> 00:31:42.030
But you can't do it alone.

493
00:31:43.250 --> 00:31:43.870
You can't.

494
00:31:44.920 --> 00:31:45.730
You can't do it alone.

495
00:31:45.940 --> 00:31:48.790
Now, this flies in the
face of culture as well

496
00:31:48.790 --> 00:31:51.190
Culture when it comes to
decisions about direction, culture has

497
00:31:51.250 --> 00:31:54.550
one piece of advice, it's
three words, it's awesome, right?

498
00:31:54.760 --> 00:31:59.060
Follow your... heart. Follow

499
00:31:59.060 --> 00:31:59.870
your heart.

500
00:32:00.260 --> 00:32:03.110
It's every Disney movie, it's Moana,
follow your heart to the

501
00:32:03.110 --> 00:32:03.560
sea, Moana?

502
00:32:05.210 --> 00:32:06.590
It's a good movie, by the
way. I like that movie.

503
00:32:07.570 --> 00:32:08.410
Follow your heart.

504
00:32:09.430 --> 00:32:16.000
There's a problem with that, your heart
and my heart is a big

505
00:32:16.180 --> 00:32:17.950
freaking liar.

506
00:32:18.930 --> 00:32:20.790
Do you know that? It's

507
00:32:20.790 --> 00:32:21.620
a liar?

508
00:32:22.600 --> 00:32:27.190
Sixteen chapters before the book of
Jeremiah says, "Call to me

509
00:32:27.190 --> 00:32:28.660
and I will answer you."

510
00:32:29.110 --> 00:32:32.410
Jeremiah writes this
about our hearts.

511
00:32:33.820 --> 00:32:34.030
It says:.

512
00:32:40.830 --> 00:32:41.760
This is your heart.

513
00:32:42.280 --> 00:32:45.840
See, your heart is a liar because
your heart sees what it wants

514
00:32:45.840 --> 00:32:48.360
to see and hears what
it wants to hear.

515
00:32:48.380 --> 00:32:48.850
That's it.

516
00:32:50.390 --> 00:32:52.420
If it wants to see green
pastures, it'll see it everywhere.

517
00:32:53.260 --> 00:32:56.740
We were on vacation, my family and
I just got back like a week

518
00:32:56.740 --> 00:32:57.160
ago.

519
00:32:57.220 --> 00:32:59.140
We were on a two
week vacation at the beach.

520
00:32:59.170 --> 00:33:00.480
It was amazing.

521
00:33:00.490 --> 00:33:03.580
We were on this little island
and about a week into vacation.

522
00:33:03.580 --> 00:33:06.880
So I don't know, day seven, day
eight, it's low tide and we're

523
00:33:06.880 --> 00:33:08.350
wading in the water
with our kids.

524
00:33:08.380 --> 00:33:11.260
And we start to
step on sand dollars.

525
00:33:11.380 --> 00:33:13.200
Has this ever happened to
you? It's super fun.

526
00:33:13.360 --> 00:33:15.820
You kind of -- you can use your
feet, or if the water is shallow

527
00:33:15.820 --> 00:33:17.020
enough you can feel
with your hands.

528
00:33:17.250 --> 00:33:19.960
And what you're trying to do is
you feel for something hard and

529
00:33:19.960 --> 00:33:22.240
then you just reach down into the
water and you pick the thing

530
00:33:22.240 --> 00:33:23.950
up and you hope it
doesn't have claws or teeth.

531
00:33:24.220 --> 00:33:26.320
That's going to how
you find sand dollars.

532
00:33:26.620 --> 00:33:30.160
And if you're envisioning the white
circle kind of bone, white

533
00:33:31.120 --> 00:33:35.890
smooth circle, that's a that's
a dead, murdered, scalped sand

534
00:33:35.890 --> 00:33:36.430
dollar.

535
00:33:37.010 --> 00:33:38.800
That's not what live
sand dollars look like.

536
00:33:38.830 --> 00:33:42.010
They come out of the water kind
of green and brown and slimy

537
00:33:42.010 --> 00:33:46.850
with all these little hairs on
them like (sound effect) just

538
00:33:46.870 --> 00:33:48.340
kind of looking at
you weird, you know?

539
00:33:49.160 --> 00:33:51.130
They don't have eyes, I don't know
why I said that, they can't

540
00:33:51.130 --> 00:33:51.610
look at you.

541
00:33:52.300 --> 00:33:54.310
I hope they don't have
eyes. I have to apologize

542
00:33:54.430 --> 00:33:56.690
to lots of them if they do,
because we killed a lot of them.

543
00:33:56.710 --> 00:33:59.200
Our kids want to keep them and
so we decide, okay, you can keep

544
00:33:59.200 --> 00:33:59.980
like 10, right?

545
00:34:00.370 --> 00:34:03.010
So they pick up these sand dollars,
they put them in a bucket

546
00:34:03.040 --> 00:34:05.830
and we decide we're gonna go
home and bleach them and whatever.

547
00:34:06.190 --> 00:34:07.650
So we put the
bucket in the minivan.

548
00:34:07.690 --> 00:34:09.760
We drive back to the
place where we're staying.

549
00:34:10.000 --> 00:34:12.640
And somewhere on the ride, and I'm
-- probably this is like I'm

550
00:34:12.640 --> 00:34:14.190
speculating at this point,
because I don't know.

551
00:34:15.350 --> 00:34:18.040
Because here's what I think happens,
one of the sand dollars

552
00:34:18.040 --> 00:34:21.160
said to the other sand dollars,
he's like, "Guys, this is not

553
00:34:21.160 --> 00:34:23.500
how it ends for me.

554
00:34:23.680 --> 00:34:25.370
I do not die in this bucket.

555
00:34:25.840 --> 00:34:26.610
I'm getting out here.".

556
00:34:27.340 --> 00:34:29.410
And he makes a break for it, you
know, climbs up the side of the

557
00:34:29.410 --> 00:34:31.060
bucket and then falls down.

558
00:34:31.240 --> 00:34:34.300
Unfortunately, he falls into a deep
crevice of my minivan where

559
00:34:34.300 --> 00:34:36.470
he will never be
discovered to this day.

560
00:34:37.390 --> 00:34:37.850
Fact.

561
00:34:38.780 --> 00:34:41.950
The next morning I go open the
van, the door of the minivan, and

562
00:34:41.950 --> 00:34:46.390
it's like -- it's like just death
himself has slept in my van,

563
00:34:46.840 --> 00:34:47.350
you know?

564
00:34:47.860 --> 00:34:48.220
[laughter]

565
00:34:48.220 --> 00:34:51.250
It's this real (sound effect)
burnt hair and dead fish.

566
00:34:51.570 --> 00:34:52.000
(sound effect)

567
00:34:52.750 --> 00:34:55.160
It was like (sound effect).

568
00:34:55.160 --> 00:34:56.500
Who wants to go to the beach?

569
00:34:56.610 --> 00:34:57.790
You know, it was awful.

570
00:34:58.450 --> 00:34:58.980
I couldn't find it.

571
00:34:59.250 --> 00:35:00.320
Literally still haven't
found it.

572
00:35:01.000 --> 00:35:03.340
And I'm mad, I'm gag
driving to the beach.

573
00:35:03.440 --> 00:35:05.620
(sound effect) We
almost crashed again.

574
00:35:06.220 --> 00:35:10.870
And at some point I make
this conclusion, I decide the problem

575
00:35:10.900 --> 00:35:13.360
is not the sand
dollar we can't find.

576
00:35:14.010 --> 00:35:15.520
The problems is this stupid van.

577
00:35:15.750 --> 00:35:16.600
I hate this van.

578
00:35:16.930 --> 00:35:17.880
I'm so sick of mini vans.

579
00:35:17.950 --> 00:35:20.890
It's like destroyed, disgusting, a
hundred and whatever thousand

580
00:35:20.890 --> 00:35:21.210
miles.

581
00:35:21.210 --> 00:35:22.240
And I'm sick of this van.

582
00:35:22.420 --> 00:35:23.410
The problem is this van.

583
00:35:23.600 --> 00:35:24.460
I need something different.

584
00:35:24.520 --> 00:35:24.940
I don't want a van anymore.

585
00:35:24.940 --> 00:35:27.970
And then I look up across
the way, there it is.

586
00:35:29.340 --> 00:35:33.200
Big, shining, beautiful, the
skies, partly angels sing.

587
00:35:33.430 --> 00:35:35.130
It's a Nissan Armada.

588
00:35:36.660 --> 00:35:39.690
I took this photo of it so
you can enjoy the moment with me.

589
00:35:40.050 --> 00:35:41.310
This is exactly what
I look like.

590
00:35:42.390 --> 00:35:43.500
It's glorious.

591
00:35:43.950 --> 00:35:44.960
It's not a minivan.

592
00:35:45.420 --> 00:35:49.440
It's got three rows of seats,
big, powerful, you know, just like

593
00:35:49.440 --> 00:35:52.780
me. [laughter]

594
00:35:52.780 --> 00:35:54.560
Except the three -- I don't
have a third row seat, though.

595
00:35:55.860 --> 00:35:56.810
Like I need this thing.

596
00:35:56.870 --> 00:35:57.410
I need it.

597
00:35:57.620 --> 00:36:02.810
And from that moment on, I
saw Nissan Armadas everywhere on this

598
00:36:02.810 --> 00:36:03.350
island.

599
00:36:04.220 --> 00:36:08.000
Now, I don't think Nissan suddenly
shipped in a hundred Armadas

600
00:36:08.690 --> 00:36:08.990
right?

601
00:36:09.030 --> 00:36:10.430
I didn't see any the first week.

602
00:36:10.460 --> 00:36:12.150
And that's all I
saw the second week.

603
00:36:13.350 --> 00:36:18.870
This is your heart, your heart will
see what it wants to see.

604
00:36:19.440 --> 00:36:20.370
You want an Armada?

605
00:36:20.370 --> 00:36:21.270
You'll see them everywhere.

606
00:36:21.510 --> 00:36:23.520
I'm going to curse you,
look for Jeep Wranglers.

607
00:36:23.810 --> 00:36:27.000
You'll see them everywhere,
stupid Jeep Wrangler drivers.

608
00:36:27.070 --> 00:36:28.650
Not that I'm
jealous, but whatever.

609
00:36:29.670 --> 00:36:30.990
This is how your heart works.

610
00:36:32.090 --> 00:36:34.920
Follow your heart is the worst
advice you could possibly take.

611
00:36:35.330 --> 00:36:38.330
But it's the advice being thrown
at you every second of every

612
00:36:38.330 --> 00:36:41.150
day from nearly every source
of media you consume.

613
00:36:41.270 --> 00:36:42.530
Follow your heart.

614
00:36:43.310 --> 00:36:44.630
You know what happens when
you follow your heart?

615
00:36:45.920 --> 00:36:46.760
I'll tell you what I've seen.

616
00:36:47.260 --> 00:36:49.160
I've seen people follow their
heart right into addiction.

617
00:36:50.250 --> 00:36:52.170
I've seen people follow their
heart right in the divorce.

618
00:36:53.260 --> 00:36:55.270
I've seen people follow their
heart right into debt.

619
00:36:55.630 --> 00:36:59.560
That's what I've seen, because
the heart is deceptive.

620
00:37:00.350 --> 00:37:02.390
Deceptive above all things.

621
00:37:04.100 --> 00:37:05.450
So how do you hear God's voice?

622
00:37:06.140 --> 00:37:09.290
How would you ever hear God's
direction if your heart is

623
00:37:09.290 --> 00:37:10.290
untrustworthy?

624
00:37:11.580 --> 00:37:12.420
How would you do it?

625
00:37:13.790 --> 00:37:14.660
Well, there's one way.

626
00:37:15.890 --> 00:37:22.640
In the Bible, there is one
way, one source of God's direction.

627
00:37:23.540 --> 00:37:25.350
Do you know what the one
source of God's direction is?

628
00:37:26.910 --> 00:37:27.890
It's Brian Tome,

629
00:37:28.190 --> 00:37:28.930
Just kidding. [laughter].

630
00:37:31.690 --> 00:37:32.360
It's Chuck Mingo.

631
00:37:34.700 --> 00:37:38.750
No, the one source
is wise counsellors.

632
00:37:40.110 --> 00:37:43.500
Wise counselors in the
Bible, something sacred.

633
00:37:44.370 --> 00:37:47.490
Now a wise counselor, the quickest
definition I could give you

634
00:37:48.150 --> 00:37:50.110
is a wise counselor
is not just anybody.

635
00:37:50.130 --> 00:37:51.690
This isn't just any friend.

636
00:37:53.200 --> 00:37:55.000
Because we're not talking
about good advice.

637
00:37:55.840 --> 00:37:57.460
We're talking about
God's direction.

638
00:37:57.730 --> 00:37:59.350
Different, very different.

639
00:38:00.410 --> 00:38:03.100
And so to be a wise
counselor, someone must meet two criteria.

640
00:38:03.100 --> 00:38:07.360
One, they must know and
love God, that's most important.

641
00:38:09.700 --> 00:38:13.240
Two, they ideally know
and love you.

642
00:38:14.460 --> 00:38:17.370
That's a wise counselor, they know
and love God and they know

643
00:38:17.370 --> 00:38:17.790
and love you.

644
00:38:17.790 --> 00:38:20.250
And the benefits of
them are enormous.

645
00:38:20.280 --> 00:38:24.300
Google wise counselors Bible and
you'll find dozens and dozens

646
00:38:24.300 --> 00:38:24.830
of verses.

647
00:38:25.410 --> 00:38:26.170
Here's one of them
I'll read to ya.

648
00:38:27.020 --> 00:38:28.500
This comes out of
the Book of Proverbs.

649
00:38:29.500 --> 00:38:30.940
Proverbs 11:14:

650
00:38:42.770 --> 00:38:47.240
Wise counselors are who
gives God's direction.

651
00:38:47.960 --> 00:38:49.690
Period. That's it.

652
00:38:49.890 --> 00:38:50.700
That's the only source.

653
00:38:51.920 --> 00:38:55.440
If you want to hear God's
direction for your life, you're gonna

654
00:38:55.460 --> 00:38:58.660
need some wise counselors and you're
gonna need to do what they

655
00:38:58.660 --> 00:38:59.070
say

656
00:38:59.070 --> 00:39:02.080
You're going to have to throw
off the American independence that

657
00:39:02.080 --> 00:39:05.440
says God surely if He had direction
for my life, He would tell

658
00:39:05.440 --> 00:39:06.160
it to me.

659
00:39:06.310 --> 00:39:07.210
I would hear it.

660
00:39:08.140 --> 00:39:08.560
Would He?

661
00:39:10.000 --> 00:39:13.870
What do you think is the
most important direction God has ever

662
00:39:13.870 --> 00:39:14.620
given somebody?

663
00:39:15.730 --> 00:39:16.260
What do you think it is?

664
00:39:16.260 --> 00:39:19.890
In the history of the world,
what's the most important time God

665
00:39:19.890 --> 00:39:21.720
ever gave someone direction?

666
00:39:22.670 --> 00:39:24.720
You could probably make a case
for a few different people.

667
00:39:25.320 --> 00:39:26.970
I'll tell you mine, I'll tell
you mine in my case.

668
00:39:28.200 --> 00:39:33.000
I think the person is Paul,
like the apostle Paul, St.

669
00:39:33.000 --> 00:39:33.930
Paul from the Bible.

670
00:39:33.960 --> 00:39:34.740
I think it's Paul.

671
00:39:34.830 --> 00:39:38.340
And by the way, Jesus should
be excluded from this contest.

672
00:39:38.430 --> 00:39:40.810
He is God, that feels
like cheating to me.

673
00:39:40.830 --> 00:39:41.130
I'm sorry.

674
00:39:41.160 --> 00:39:43.680
Jesus. Just a rule I made up.

675
00:39:43.950 --> 00:39:45.300
Paul, I'm going to go with Paul.

676
00:39:46.320 --> 00:39:47.790
And I'll prove this point
to you by this.

677
00:39:48.060 --> 00:39:51.810
Raise your hand if you can hear
my voice and you're not Jewish.

678
00:39:53.490 --> 00:39:54.260
Ok, great.

679
00:39:54.640 --> 00:39:55.510
Just about everybody.

680
00:39:55.890 --> 00:39:56.500
What do you know?

681
00:39:57.190 --> 00:40:01.540
Well, the only reason you're here
and listening is because of

682
00:40:01.540 --> 00:40:02.560
Paul. Really.

683
00:40:02.680 --> 00:40:04.870
I don't mean that --
that's not hyperbole, really.

684
00:40:05.170 --> 00:40:10.270
Paul is the one guy God said,
"Hey, your mission is to take the

685
00:40:10.270 --> 00:40:13.330
gospel of Jesus, the message of
Jesus to people who aren't

686
00:40:13.330 --> 00:40:13.780
Jewish.".

687
00:40:13.810 --> 00:40:14.770
And that's what Paul did.

688
00:40:15.550 --> 00:40:19.540
Critical. It's changed the
course of world history.

689
00:40:19.720 --> 00:40:23.560
Critical moment of someone clearly
hearing God's direction for

690
00:40:23.560 --> 00:40:24.610
their life, if you ask me.

691
00:40:24.760 --> 00:40:26.860
Maybe the most important ever.

692
00:40:28.090 --> 00:40:29.350
Something to know about Paul.

693
00:40:30.070 --> 00:40:32.740
Paul knew how to hear God's
voice like on his own.

694
00:40:33.090 --> 00:40:33.970
He was pretty good at it.

695
00:40:34.060 --> 00:40:35.410
He wrote most of
the New Testament.

696
00:40:35.650 --> 00:40:38.590
In one of those books he even
talks about how close him and God,

697
00:40:38.620 --> 00:40:39.780
where he's kind of
bragging about it.

698
00:40:39.780 --> 00:40:42.640
And he's like, "Yeah, this one time
I was caught up to the third

699
00:40:42.640 --> 00:40:43.480
level of heaven.

700
00:40:43.510 --> 00:40:45.720
So, you know?"

701
00:40:45.720 --> 00:40:47.080
What's the third level
of heaven? I

702
00:40:47.080 --> 00:40:47.680
have no idea.

703
00:40:48.010 --> 00:40:50.290
I've never been there, neither
have you or anybody else.

704
00:40:50.320 --> 00:40:51.220
Just Paul.

705
00:40:51.530 --> 00:40:55.570
And so if God wants, God could
just talk to Paul and Paul'd be

706
00:40:55.570 --> 00:40:56.860
like, "Yeah, what's up, God?

707
00:40:57.100 --> 00:41:00.100
Hey, I thought we can meet, Paul,
maybe like on the second level

708
00:41:00.100 --> 00:41:00.710
of heaven.

709
00:41:00.990 --> 00:41:01.870
I have some direction for you.".

710
00:41:01.900 --> 00:41:02.710
"Cool. I'll meet you there.".

711
00:41:02.740 --> 00:41:04.220
You know, go like that.

712
00:41:04.930 --> 00:41:09.340
But that's not how God chooses
to direct Paul's life at all.

713
00:41:09.700 --> 00:41:10.390
At all.

714
00:41:10.660 --> 00:41:12.580
We're gonna dive into Paul's story
here for the next few

715
00:41:12.580 --> 00:41:12.820
minutes.

716
00:41:12.850 --> 00:41:16.060
I want you to hang with me
through his story, because I want you

717
00:41:16.060 --> 00:41:20.680
to see every moment of significant
direction in Paul's life and

718
00:41:20.680 --> 00:41:22.510
how God chose to talk to him.

719
00:41:22.690 --> 00:41:25.360
Because maybe, just maybe, it's how
he'll talk to you, too.

720
00:41:25.360 --> 00:41:30.740
The story starts on the road
to Damascus, and at this point,

721
00:41:30.740 --> 00:41:33.530
Paul's name is Saul, so you're
not confused when we read the

722
00:41:33.530 --> 00:41:33.860
story.

723
00:41:33.890 --> 00:41:34.800
His name is Saul.

724
00:41:34.820 --> 00:41:35.780
That's his Jewish name.

725
00:41:35.810 --> 00:41:38.510
Paul is his non-Jewish name,
that's how that works out.

726
00:41:39.110 --> 00:41:42.740
So, Saul is on the road to
Damascus because at this point he

727
00:41:42.740 --> 00:41:45.020
thinks God's direction is
to kill Christians.

728
00:41:45.350 --> 00:41:47.330
That's how he's helping God, so
he's going to Damascus to kill

729
00:41:47.330 --> 00:41:47.900
some Christians.

730
00:41:48.500 --> 00:41:52.070
Bright light shines out of heaven
and knocks him to the ground.

731
00:41:52.940 --> 00:41:56.390
It's Jesus and He starts talking
to him and he says this:

732
00:42:26.970 --> 00:42:28.320
Two very important things
to note here.

733
00:42:29.430 --> 00:42:33.210
One, Jesus does not give Paul
the direction for his life.

734
00:42:33.990 --> 00:42:36.620
He says, go to the city
and somebody tell him the

735
00:42:36.720 --> 00:42:37.140
direction for his life.

736
00:42:37.140 --> 00:42:38.280
Did you catch that?

737
00:42:39.000 --> 00:42:40.710
Get there and then you'll
be told what to do.

738
00:42:41.770 --> 00:42:46.210
Two, Jesus takes away his eyesight
so that Paul can't even get

739
00:42:46.210 --> 00:42:48.300
to the city without the
help of other people.

740
00:42:48.310 --> 00:42:53.410
And like that, in a moment, the
only way Paul can hear God's

741
00:42:53.410 --> 00:42:56.960
direction for his life is with
the help of other people.

742
00:42:58.890 --> 00:43:02.170
He gets to Damascus and God's
prepared this guy named Ananais to

743
00:43:02.170 --> 00:43:05.890
know something about Paul, who he
is, who he's to become.

744
00:43:06.070 --> 00:43:09.790
And he gives Ananais the
direction for Paul's life.

745
00:43:10.770 --> 00:43:14.640
He says "This is my guy who
not only will preach to the Jews,

746
00:43:14.790 --> 00:43:18.390
but is going to get to take
my message to all of the non-Jews,

747
00:43:18.540 --> 00:43:23.160
he'll appear in front of kings
and rulers, and he'll suffer for

748
00:43:23.160 --> 00:43:24.460
my sake, for my name's sake.

749
00:43:24.470 --> 00:43:25.650
He's my chosen vessel.".

750
00:43:26.110 --> 00:43:27.270
He says this to Ananais.

751
00:43:27.930 --> 00:43:30.000
Ananais says it to Saul.

752
00:43:30.570 --> 00:43:34.260
There is no record anywhere in
Scripture of God ever saying it

753
00:43:34.470 --> 00:43:36.220
to Saul, just an Ananais.

754
00:43:37.100 --> 00:43:42.300
And in this moment, see,
Paul makes this amazing, amazing,

755
00:43:43.050 --> 00:43:48.010
humble move and he says, "If
wise counsel says it, if Ananais

756
00:43:48.090 --> 00:43:52.490
says it, it's not good
advice, it's God's direction."

757
00:43:53.000 --> 00:43:54.530
and he immediately acts on it.

758
00:43:55.060 --> 00:43:56.900
Act 9:20 is where
the story picks up.

759
00:44:02.600 --> 00:44:05.270
He took Ananais's words
as God's direction.

760
00:44:06.110 --> 00:44:09.330
From there, people tried to
kill Paul, they're mad

761
00:44:09.330 --> 00:44:11.330
at him and they try to stone
him and it goes really bad.

762
00:44:11.360 --> 00:44:14.510
And so then more direction comes
for Paul's life, and it comes

763
00:44:14.510 --> 00:44:17.600
in the form of more
wise counselors, the disciples, like

764
00:44:17.600 --> 00:44:19.520
Jesus' disciples get Paul.

765
00:44:19.520 --> 00:44:21.980
And they're like, "Hey, man,
this isn't going so well.

766
00:44:22.010 --> 00:44:24.560
And so we think God's direction for
you is actually to go back

767
00:44:24.560 --> 00:44:26.150
home to Tarsus."

768
00:44:26.840 --> 00:44:30.830
Imagine a burrito in your head,
that's Turkey, the country of

769
00:44:30.830 --> 00:44:34.190
Turkey. In the middle of the
burrito at the bottom is Tarsus,

770
00:44:34.190 --> 00:44:35.510
kind of near
the Mediterranean Sea.

771
00:44:35.540 --> 00:44:39.350
So he sails up from where
he is in Jerusalem up to

772
00:44:39.350 --> 00:44:42.720
Tarsus and they just kind
of exile him almost.

773
00:44:43.490 --> 00:44:45.770
But Paul again takes it as
God's direction, because he just gets

774
00:44:45.770 --> 00:44:46.700
on a boat and goes.

775
00:44:47.810 --> 00:44:50.480
And I had the privilege of spending
time with one of the world's

776
00:44:50.480 --> 00:44:53.750
leading experts on
Paul last summer.

777
00:44:53.930 --> 00:44:57.140
And he brought this time of Paul's
life to light in a way that

778
00:44:57.140 --> 00:44:58.400
I'd never understood it before.

779
00:44:58.430 --> 00:45:01.940
First of all, he said Paul was
there in Tarsus for eight years.

780
00:45:03.030 --> 00:45:07.200
Eight years and he wasn't
preaching, he wasn't teaching, he

781
00:45:07.200 --> 00:45:08.490
wasn't being a chosen vessel.

782
00:45:08.640 --> 00:45:11.400
He wasn't fulfilling the promise
that God had spoken even

783
00:45:11.400 --> 00:45:15.840
through Ananais to him, he
was just doing nothing.

784
00:45:16.590 --> 00:45:21.660
It's monotony day after day after
day after day in Tarsus.

785
00:45:23.300 --> 00:45:27.200
And more than that this guy
said, you know, Paul likely would

786
00:45:27.200 --> 00:45:29.120
have been married, likely
would have had kids.

787
00:45:29.120 --> 00:45:31.310
When he showed up as a
Christian, his family would have shunned

788
00:45:31.310 --> 00:45:34.460
him, he would have been an
outcast, unable to see them.

789
00:45:34.460 --> 00:45:37.070
And so he would have been not
allowed to live in the city.

790
00:45:37.130 --> 00:45:40.880
He would have been cast out into
the hills where he most likely

791
00:45:40.880 --> 00:45:43.130
lived alone in a cave.

792
00:45:44.910 --> 00:45:48.090
Alone in a cave for eight years.

793
00:45:49.540 --> 00:45:52.660
What I find most remarkable
is that he never left.

794
00:45:53.440 --> 00:45:56.530
He didn't decide, "Surely I heard
God wrong or this can't be

795
00:45:56.530 --> 00:45:58.050
right and so I'm gonna go.".

796
00:45:58.150 --> 00:45:58.770
He just stayed.

797
00:45:58.810 --> 00:46:02.860
Can you imagine how emotionally
and physically grueling eight

798
00:46:02.860 --> 00:46:04.000
years in the cave would be?

799
00:46:04.030 --> 00:46:05.830
And I think: why? This

800
00:46:05.830 --> 00:46:08.260
can't be God's direction or part
of his plan, this makes no

801
00:46:08.260 --> 00:46:08.770
sense.

802
00:46:09.010 --> 00:46:09.820
Eight years in a cave?

803
00:46:09.820 --> 00:46:10.900
What a waste of time.

804
00:46:11.410 --> 00:46:12.300
It makes no sense.

805
00:46:13.470 --> 00:46:15.810
Most challenging to me, I think
about what I would do.

806
00:46:16.760 --> 00:46:18.380
So I want you to think
about what what would you do?

807
00:46:19.440 --> 00:46:22.320
Would you be so confident that
was God's direction, not just

808
00:46:22.320 --> 00:46:24.120
good advice, that you would,
you'd stay in the cave?

809
00:46:24.750 --> 00:46:26.100
Would you stay or
would you leave?

810
00:46:28.260 --> 00:46:29.880
You know what I would
do, I would leave.

811
00:46:30.060 --> 00:46:30.750
I already told you that.

812
00:46:32.040 --> 00:46:33.000
I decided to quit my job.

813
00:46:33.980 --> 00:46:35.990
I decided to leave when the
monotony set in for me,

814
00:46:36.130 --> 00:46:37.010
it can't be God's direction.

815
00:46:38.080 --> 00:46:39.250
it's not green pastures,
I'm out here.

816
00:46:40.420 --> 00:46:40.930
What would you do?

817
00:46:41.470 --> 00:46:42.620
Would you stay or
would you leave?

818
00:46:42.680 --> 00:46:44.280
Well, miraculously for
Paul, he stayed.

819
00:46:45.970 --> 00:46:49.630
And eight years in more direction comes,
again in the form of a

820
00:46:49.630 --> 00:46:52.570
person, a wise counselor shows
up, this time Paul's friend

821
00:46:52.570 --> 00:46:53.110
Barnabas.

822
00:46:53.110 --> 00:46:55.270
And Barnabas shows up and Barnabas
says, "Paul, it's time to

823
00:46:55.270 --> 00:46:55.810
come back.

824
00:46:56.740 --> 00:46:58.300
Get in the boat with me. We

825
00:46:58.300 --> 00:47:00.070
think it's time to come back,
we think God's saying to come

826
00:47:00.070 --> 00:47:00.280
back.

827
00:47:00.370 --> 00:47:01.720
We're going to go to
the city of Antioch.".

828
00:47:02.500 --> 00:47:04.060
They sailed down on
a boat to Antioch.

829
00:47:04.240 --> 00:47:05.550
They spend a year there.

830
00:47:06.680 --> 00:47:10.280
And after a year, the church
leaders there, they're praying and

831
00:47:10.280 --> 00:47:14.930
they're worshipping and more direction
comes through them to

832
00:47:14.930 --> 00:47:15.680
Paul.

833
00:47:16.190 --> 00:47:17.750
We pick up the story
here and Acts 13.

834
00:47:25.410 --> 00:47:27.290
That's the reach the
non-Jewish people part.

835
00:47:33.650 --> 00:47:34.460
What happens next?

836
00:47:35.360 --> 00:47:36.230
Well, I'll tell you
what doesn't happen

837
00:47:36.230 --> 00:47:40.620
next, Paul doesn't go, "Guys,
super interesting, but I'm going

838
00:47:40.620 --> 00:47:44.300
to need God to confirm
it inside my heart. You

839
00:47:44.310 --> 00:47:44.520
know?"

840
00:47:44.520 --> 00:47:47.520
It doesn't say that,
"It's super interesting.

841
00:47:47.530 --> 00:47:48.660
I'm going to need a sign.".

842
00:47:48.950 --> 00:47:49.650
It doesn't say that.

843
00:47:50.020 --> 00:47:53.670
It doesn't say, "super interesting, but
I'm not sure it matches

844
00:47:53.670 --> 00:47:55.290
my Instagram number, you know?

845
00:47:55.440 --> 00:47:59.190
I'm more like, I'm kind of a seven
and this feels like a job for

846
00:47:59.190 --> 00:47:59.880
a two, so..."

847
00:48:02.550 --> 00:48:07.230
No, he just goes,
immediately, he goes.

848
00:48:07.230 --> 00:48:09.870
And that would be the last
major direction of Paul's life.

849
00:48:09.930 --> 00:48:12.540
He gets small instructions, this
city versus that city, that

850
00:48:12.540 --> 00:48:12.900
kind of thing.

851
00:48:13.620 --> 00:48:16.350
But holistically, this is the
last major direction that God

852
00:48:16.380 --> 00:48:18.840
gives him for his life because
for the next several decades,

853
00:48:19.410 --> 00:48:23.640
roaming around the known earth
spreading the Good News of

854
00:48:23.640 --> 00:48:24.200
Jesus.

855
00:48:24.210 --> 00:48:26.280
And can I tell you,
it was hard for him.

856
00:48:27.320 --> 00:48:28.070
He was shipwrecked.

857
00:48:28.100 --> 00:48:28.730
He was beaten.

858
00:48:28.760 --> 00:48:29.510
He was whipped.

859
00:48:29.870 --> 00:48:30.740
He was jailed.

860
00:48:31.010 --> 00:48:34.280
He spent nights out
alone, sleeping outside.

861
00:48:35.540 --> 00:48:36.200
He was in danger.

862
00:48:36.230 --> 00:48:36.830
He was in trouble.

863
00:48:36.850 --> 00:48:41.510
It was he was emotionally
and physically just grueling, you

864
00:48:41.510 --> 00:48:41.810
know.

865
00:48:43.430 --> 00:48:44.930
I wonder like how
do you endure that?

866
00:48:45.140 --> 00:48:48.470
How do you endure decades of
that direction for his life?

867
00:48:48.490 --> 00:48:49.130
How would he ever do that?

868
00:48:49.140 --> 00:48:52.580
You'd have to be like
trained, like super intentionally trained

869
00:48:52.580 --> 00:48:53.810
and prepared for this moment.

870
00:48:53.810 --> 00:48:56.360
Something, I don't know, something
super extreme, something like

871
00:48:57.140 --> 00:49:03.370
living in a cave
for eight years.

872
00:49:03.370 --> 00:49:06.650
Paul endures, he fulfills God's direction
for his life and the

873
00:49:06.650 --> 00:49:09.730
world is changed because of it.

874
00:49:10.940 --> 00:49:14.060
The world is utterly changed because
of it, all because he

875
00:49:14.060 --> 00:49:18.160
decided it's not good advice,
it's God's direction when it

876
00:49:18.160 --> 00:49:19.210
comes from my wise counselors.

877
00:49:20.370 --> 00:49:21.070
And he went for it.

878
00:49:21.760 --> 00:49:22.270
He went for it.

879
00:49:23.380 --> 00:49:24.100
Listen, here's the thing.

880
00:49:26.540 --> 00:49:32.000
If the most important moment in
human history of God giving his

881
00:49:32.000 --> 00:49:37.550
direction was given by God to others
to Paul, it'll be the same

882
00:49:37.550 --> 00:49:38.330
in your life.

883
00:49:38.360 --> 00:49:39.770
It won't be any different.

884
00:49:40.610 --> 00:49:41.690
It'll come the same way.

885
00:49:41.700 --> 00:49:44.900
If you want to hear God
clearly on the direction for your

886
00:49:44.900 --> 00:49:47.300
life, it will only
come through wise counsel.

887
00:49:47.900 --> 00:49:50.690
You can hear it, you just can't
do it alone. It will only

888
00:49:50.690 --> 00:49:51.770
come through wise counsel.

889
00:49:51.800 --> 00:49:56.480
I wonder who are
your wise counselors?

890
00:49:56.510 --> 00:49:57.200
Do you have them?

891
00:49:58.660 --> 00:50:00.250
Thankfully, in my life, I do.

892
00:50:00.250 --> 00:50:02.650
It's one of the biggest blessings,
maybe the biggest in my life.

893
00:50:02.680 --> 00:50:05.440
I have a great collection of
wise counselors: I have my parents,

894
00:50:05.450 --> 00:50:08.200
I have my wife, I have
the friends who I mentioned

895
00:50:08.200 --> 00:50:13.780
earlier, guys like Matt and Greg
and Jason and Walker, who I

896
00:50:13.780 --> 00:50:16.330
met in these things
called Crossroads Journey Groups.

897
00:50:17.940 --> 00:50:19.290
I have our senior pastor, Brian.

898
00:50:21.020 --> 00:50:25.100
You know, when I quit my job,
I did everything I could to hear

899
00:50:25.100 --> 00:50:26.240
God and then I quit.

900
00:50:26.630 --> 00:50:28.460
And I was most
nervous about telling Brian.

901
00:50:28.820 --> 00:50:30.980
And I went to his office to
tell him, I was hoping he wasn't

902
00:50:30.980 --> 00:50:32.160
there, but he was,
I was like, "Crap.

903
00:50:32.280 --> 00:50:34.160
This sucks, gotta tell
him, you know.".

904
00:50:35.280 --> 00:50:37.790
And so I tell him, he's
very gracious, he's bummed, he's very

905
00:50:37.790 --> 00:50:38.280
gracious.

906
00:50:38.300 --> 00:50:40.490
He asked me a few questions and
then he actually even just prays

907
00:50:40.490 --> 00:50:43.670
a blessing that I'd be successful
where I was going and have

908
00:50:43.670 --> 00:50:45.470
God's favor and all
kinds of cool things.

909
00:50:45.800 --> 00:50:46.790
He left to go to the gym.

910
00:50:46.790 --> 00:50:48.590
I left to go to
my desk, started doing e-mails.

911
00:50:48.590 --> 00:50:50.390
I was like, the
hard part is over.

912
00:50:50.470 --> 00:50:54.270
Whoo, smooth sailing, green
pastures here I come.

913
00:50:54.330 --> 00:50:54.580
You know?

914
00:50:56.050 --> 00:51:01.360
And 15 minutes later, he showed up
at my desk in his workout

915
00:51:01.360 --> 00:51:01.810
clothes.

916
00:51:02.430 --> 00:51:03.100
And he said, "Hey.

917
00:51:05.070 --> 00:51:09.790
I went to the gym and I think
God talked to me and I'm back

918
00:51:10.120 --> 00:51:11.980
because I think I have some things
from him you need to hear."

919
00:51:13.690 --> 00:51:18.750
He said, "Listen, I think you are
a pastor and you are a leader.

920
00:51:18.780 --> 00:51:21.540
I think you are called to ministry
and I think it is a mistake

921
00:51:21.540 --> 00:51:22.050
for you to go.

922
00:51:22.060 --> 00:51:22.870
I think you should stay."

923
00:51:24.680 --> 00:51:25.940
And when he said
that I was relieved.

924
00:51:25.970 --> 00:51:26.690
No, of course not.

925
00:51:28.760 --> 00:51:30.890
It's like crap, I already
made a decision. Ugh.

926
00:51:34.110 --> 00:51:36.780
I wanted so badly to be
like, "Thank you so much.

927
00:51:36.810 --> 00:51:37.770
That's so kind.

928
00:51:38.040 --> 00:51:40.110
Oh man, I'm gonna miss
you too, bud. You

929
00:51:40.120 --> 00:51:40.520
know?"

930
00:51:40.520 --> 00:51:43.720
Thankfully, I didn't.

931
00:51:43.770 --> 00:51:48.510
I respected him enough and I
had enough humility to reconsider.

932
00:51:48.930 --> 00:51:52.110
So I went home about 1:00 in
the afternoon and I tried talking

933
00:51:52.110 --> 00:51:52.770
to God first.

934
00:51:53.100 --> 00:51:54.030
"God, what do you want me to do?

935
00:51:54.060 --> 00:51:54.720
What direction?".

936
00:51:54.750 --> 00:51:56.640
And he gave me no direction.

937
00:51:57.300 --> 00:52:00.100
I just kept thinking about these
people in my life and that

938
00:52:00.120 --> 00:52:01.200
maybe I should talk to them.

939
00:52:02.070 --> 00:52:05.460
So I talked to my wife and I
heard her for the very first time.

940
00:52:06.090 --> 00:52:08.610
I stopped just seeing green pastures
painted over all of her

941
00:52:08.610 --> 00:52:10.170
words and instead I heard her.

942
00:52:11.100 --> 00:52:15.690
She said, "Honey, you'd like this
job for like a year and

943
00:52:15.690 --> 00:52:17.220
then you'd be bored
out of your mind.

944
00:52:18.300 --> 00:52:21.050
And I don't care about the money,
I like our stupid minivan and

945
00:52:21.050 --> 00:52:22.670
our small house, it's fine.

946
00:52:23.390 --> 00:52:24.230
God, I'll take care of us.

947
00:52:24.240 --> 00:52:25.100
He always has."

948
00:52:27.150 --> 00:52:30.400
I talked to my friends, those
guys I met in Crossroads Journey

949
00:52:30.400 --> 00:52:31.720
Groups who said the same thing.

950
00:52:32.790 --> 00:52:34.550
"Oh, man, we think -- we
think you're made for this.

951
00:52:34.910 --> 00:52:36.560
We don't understand why
you would leave.

952
00:52:37.340 --> 00:52:39.650
You'er a pastor, you're a leader,
you're a teacher for the

953
00:52:39.650 --> 00:52:42.260
church. What are you doing?"

954
00:52:42.260 --> 00:52:44.060
I heard them the
very first time.

955
00:52:45.630 --> 00:52:48.600
And so the next day I
came into work and I un-quit.

956
00:52:50.510 --> 00:52:52.040
I said -- [applause]

957
00:52:52.040 --> 00:52:58.420
Yeah. That was eight years
ago, by the way.

958
00:53:00.370 --> 00:53:01.150
I left that part out.

959
00:53:02.680 --> 00:53:03.330
It was eight years ago.

960
00:53:05.240 --> 00:53:07.830
A few years after that, the guy
who had offered me that job,

961
00:53:07.860 --> 00:53:09.790
who's actually a part of
Crossroads, I saw him.

962
00:53:09.790 --> 00:53:11.850
I was pumping gas at a
Kroger and I ran into him.

963
00:53:12.180 --> 00:53:14.580
And he goes, "Oh, man, hey, listen,
I just want you to know,

964
00:53:15.150 --> 00:53:18.750
right after you said no and you
chose to stay at Crossroads, we

965
00:53:18.750 --> 00:53:21.600
got a new CEO who came
in and he like changed everything.

966
00:53:21.780 --> 00:53:23.880
We wouldn't have even gotten to
do the stuff we had talked

967
00:53:23.880 --> 00:53:24.300
about.

968
00:53:24.780 --> 00:53:27.300
You really heard God
right on that one."

969
00:53:27.300 --> 00:53:27.310
[applause]

970
00:53:34.160 --> 00:53:34.750
No, I didn't.

971
00:53:36.450 --> 00:53:37.080
No, I didn't.

972
00:53:37.350 --> 00:53:38.130
I didn't hear God right.

973
00:53:38.220 --> 00:53:38.940
I heard him wrong.

974
00:53:39.690 --> 00:53:44.860
We heard him right and I chose
to take it as God's direction,

975
00:53:44.860 --> 00:53:45.910
not just good advice.

976
00:53:45.970 --> 00:53:49.120
And I'm so thankful I have because
can tell you about the last

977
00:53:49.150 --> 00:53:49.750
eight years/.

978
00:53:49.850 --> 00:53:52.360
Can I tell you about how I've
gotten to baptize both of my

979
00:53:52.360 --> 00:53:55.360
boys with those friends from
Crossroads Journey Groups at my

980
00:53:55.360 --> 00:53:55.840
side?

981
00:53:56.020 --> 00:53:58.990
Can I tell you that right now
I'm working on a project to help

982
00:53:59.080 --> 00:54:00.520
rebrand Crossroads?

983
00:54:00.660 --> 00:54:03.100
Can I tell you right now that
I've gotten to travel all over the

984
00:54:03.100 --> 00:54:06.790
world to help unlock the story of
God and share how he is

985
00:54:06.790 --> 00:54:08.380
changing the world
through our community?

986
00:54:08.530 --> 00:54:11.470
Can I tell you how I've gotten
to teach hundreds of thousands of

987
00:54:11.470 --> 00:54:13.720
people the message of Jesus in
a language they can understand?

988
00:54:13.820 --> 00:54:16.180
Can I tell you that I've got to
help lead a church in my early

989
00:54:16.180 --> 00:54:16.660
30s.

990
00:54:17.510 --> 00:54:18.730
Can I tell you
I've got to teach?

991
00:54:19.810 --> 00:54:20.770
It's unbelievable.

992
00:54:20.770 --> 00:54:20.780
[cheers and applause]

993
00:54:25.040 --> 00:54:28.720
Now, listen, some of
you have wise counsellors.

994
00:54:30.050 --> 00:54:31.530
Some of you
have wise counsellors.

995
00:54:32.950 --> 00:54:33.770
I's time to listen to them.

996
00:54:35.180 --> 00:54:39.160
You already know what to
do, do it. Do

997
00:54:39.170 --> 00:54:39.280
it.

998
00:54:40.100 --> 00:54:41.510
God, can you direct my life?

999
00:54:41.570 --> 00:54:42.380
He's like, "I did.

1000
00:54:42.440 --> 00:54:43.070
I am.

1001
00:54:44.710 --> 00:54:45.540
They're telling you, do it."

1002
00:54:48.280 --> 00:54:52.610
You need wise counselors and I get
that, I'm going to give you

1003
00:54:52.610 --> 00:54:53.390
all the same advice.

1004
00:54:53.420 --> 00:54:53.810
Here you go.

1005
00:54:53.840 --> 00:54:54.920
Ready? This is
the closing advice.

1006
00:54:54.950 --> 00:54:56.330
If you want to hear
God's direction for your

1007
00:54:56.330 --> 00:54:59.540
life, I'm going to tell you
what I tell all the millennials

1008
00:54:59.540 --> 00:55:01.670
because I'm the godfather of millennials
and they all come to

1009
00:55:01.670 --> 00:55:03.500
me for advice.

1010
00:55:04.340 --> 00:55:06.590
How do I hear God's direction?

1011
00:55:06.590 --> 00:55:08.060
And they want like
a magic formula.

1012
00:55:08.450 --> 00:55:10.420
I'm like, climb up here
on my knee, lad.

1013
00:55:11.620 --> 00:55:14.450
I will tell you of technologies,
you know, not of, things like

1014
00:55:14.450 --> 00:55:16.930
VCRs and cassette
tapes, wonders. [laughter]

1015
00:55:19.380 --> 00:55:21.620
Here's what I tell them: you
want to hear God's direction for

1016
00:55:21.620 --> 00:55:22.130
your life?

1017
00:55:22.790 --> 00:55:24.080
Three things, write these down.

1018
00:55:24.170 --> 00:55:29.030
Step one, find three people who know
and love God and know and

1019
00:55:29.030 --> 00:55:30.770
love you

1020
00:55:30.770 --> 00:55:32.180
Two, ask them what to do.

1021
00:55:32.630 --> 00:55:33.740
Three. Do it.

1022
00:55:34.400 --> 00:55:34.910
Bye-bye.

1023
00:55:37.260 --> 00:55:37.920
It's that easy.

1024
00:55:39.070 --> 00:55:41.500
You aren't -- you're merely
taking good advice in that

1025
00:55:41.500 --> 00:55:44.890
situation, you're getting a direction
of God, you are hearing

1026
00:55:44.890 --> 00:55:45.220
God.

1027
00:55:45.370 --> 00:55:49.020
What if this thing that is
actually sacred we have profaned and

1028
00:55:49.020 --> 00:55:49.840
made it common?

1029
00:55:51.390 --> 00:55:52.850
I don't think God would
like that very much.

1030
00:55:54.530 --> 00:55:56.230
But we can all hear
from Him, we can.

1031
00:55:56.290 --> 00:55:58.360
Now, if you're in a spot
where you like, "That sounds great.

1032
00:55:58.540 --> 00:56:00.160
Awesome. Good, cool.

1033
00:56:00.490 --> 00:56:01.800
I don't have
any wise counsellors.".

1034
00:56:02.050 --> 00:56:04.060
Great news. Oh, my gosh.

1035
00:56:04.090 --> 00:56:04.920
Great news.

1036
00:56:05.470 --> 00:56:06.460
You can find them here.

1037
00:56:06.820 --> 00:56:09.370
Your wise counselors are
here, I promise.

1038
00:56:09.550 --> 00:56:10.210
I found them here.

1039
00:56:10.210 --> 00:56:11.140
You can find them here.

1040
00:56:11.590 --> 00:56:13.510
One of the things that bums me
out the most is when I hear

1041
00:56:13.510 --> 00:56:16.720
people who come to Crossroads and say,
"This place is so big, I

1042
00:56:16.720 --> 00:56:18.010
can never meet anybody."

1043
00:56:19.520 --> 00:56:21.420
I don't mean to insult
you, but that's stupid.

1044
00:56:22.740 --> 00:56:23.350
Come on.

1045
00:56:24.530 --> 00:56:27.610
Do you ever walk into Target and
go, "Oh, my gosh, this place is

1046
00:56:27.610 --> 00:56:28.230
so big.

1047
00:56:28.440 --> 00:56:30.040
They definitely don't have
what I need"?

1048
00:56:31.690 --> 00:56:34.300
No, of course they
have what you need.

1049
00:56:34.300 --> 00:56:35.380
It's target.

1050
00:56:36.730 --> 00:56:38.170
Your people are here.

1051
00:56:38.220 --> 00:56:41.710
They are here and the very best
thing you can do to find them

1052
00:56:42.010 --> 00:56:44.980
is to join a
Crossroads Journey group.

1053
00:56:44.990 --> 00:56:46.150
It's the very best thing.

1054
00:56:46.390 --> 00:56:48.640
You'll meet some people and look,
maybe will work this way for

1055
00:56:48.640 --> 00:56:48.760
you.

1056
00:56:48.760 --> 00:56:51.850
Maybe the six or eight people
will all become your best friends

1057
00:56:51.850 --> 00:56:52.840
for life immediately.

1058
00:56:55.000 --> 00:56:56.100
It happened for me.

1059
00:56:56.580 --> 00:56:57.960
I would set your
sights more on this.

1060
00:56:58.260 --> 00:57:01.350
Make your goal to connect with one
to two of them, find one to

1061
00:57:01.350 --> 00:57:04.740
two who could become over
time wise counselors for you.

1062
00:57:04.950 --> 00:57:07.770
And stick with them, like don't drop
out of the group week three

1063
00:57:07.770 --> 00:57:08.250
of the Journey.

1064
00:57:08.280 --> 00:57:09.810
Don't just flake on
the whole thing.

1065
00:57:09.850 --> 00:57:10.860
Don't stop after week 4.

1066
00:57:11.040 --> 00:57:12.270
Do the whole experience.

1067
00:57:12.470 --> 00:57:15.750
And when you find these people,
stick with them even after the

1068
00:57:15.750 --> 00:57:16.200
Journey.

1069
00:57:16.230 --> 00:57:21.090
And when you do, you will
begin to hear God's direction more

1070
00:57:21.090 --> 00:57:24.780
clearly than you
ever have before.

1071
00:57:25.550 --> 00:57:27.930
And I think He's got good plans
for you and He'll take you

1072
00:57:27.960 --> 00:57:28.080
there.

1073
00:57:28.080 --> 00:57:30.720
And I've got some instructions for
you in just a second, but

1074
00:57:30.720 --> 00:57:32.590
before that, I'm going
to pray for us.

1075
00:57:34.650 --> 00:57:39.230
God, I thank you that you
turned me around, that you corrected

1076
00:57:39.230 --> 00:57:44.230
me, that you caused me to
see your voice through other people,

1077
00:57:44.230 --> 00:57:48.800
that you caused me to value
them so highly that they could

1078
00:57:48.800 --> 00:57:49.850
carry Your words for me.

1079
00:57:50.750 --> 00:57:53.270
I ask for all of us that
we hear Your direction for our lives,

1080
00:57:53.940 --> 00:57:57.320
that we take what people are
saying, that You would make it

1081
00:57:57.320 --> 00:57:59.330
clear what You're
saying through them.

1082
00:57:59.760 --> 00:58:02.120
And if we don't have those people,
God, I'm asking you to give

1083
00:58:02.120 --> 00:58:02.680
them to us.

1084
00:58:03.530 --> 00:58:03.970
Amen.

1085
00:58:04.130 --> 00:58:04.530
Okay.

1086
00:58:07.250 --> 00:58:07.920
Take out your phone.

1087
00:58:08.850 --> 00:58:10.410
I know you've got your phone
probably on your knee because

1088
00:58:10.410 --> 00:58:13.020
you're in that like get to
the car stance, you know?

1089
00:58:13.950 --> 00:58:17.430
Jut get out your phone and go
to open up, you know, Safari or

1090
00:58:17.430 --> 00:58:19.650
Chrome or whatever your web
browser is real quick.

1091
00:58:19.950 --> 00:58:20.740
This will only take a second.

1092
00:58:20.780 --> 00:58:21.600
We're almost done, I promise.

1093
00:58:22.350 --> 00:58:27.490
And type
in Crossroads.net/journey.

1094
00:58:28.610 --> 00:58:30.230
Crossroads.net/journey.

1095
00:58:33.280 --> 00:58:34.150
Ok. Are you there?

1096
00:58:37.280 --> 00:58:38.900
When you get there, you're
gonna find three buttons.

1097
00:58:40.110 --> 00:58:42.690
And I want you to click a
button before you turn off this

1098
00:58:42.690 --> 00:58:44.520
video, before you stand up out of
your seat, click one of these

1099
00:58:44.520 --> 00:58:44.910
buttons.

1100
00:58:46.460 --> 00:58:48.290
Either sign up to
lead a Journey group.

1101
00:58:48.660 --> 00:58:52.220
If you have 1% interest, if there's
1% of you that's like maybe

1102
00:58:52.220 --> 00:58:55.540
I should lead a Journey Group,
I'll be wise counselor for

1103
00:58:55.540 --> 00:58:56.800
you, that's God.

1104
00:58:56.920 --> 00:58:57.400
Do it. I'm

1105
00:58:57.490 --> 00:58:59.110
serious. Do it.

1106
00:58:59.530 --> 00:59:00.050
Don't wonder.

1107
00:59:00.130 --> 00:59:01.820
Should I, should I not? Do it.

1108
00:59:05.320 --> 00:59:08.770
If that's not the 1%, click
this button: Notify me when Journey

1109
00:59:08.860 --> 00:59:10.300
Group sign ups begin.

1110
00:59:10.300 --> 00:59:12.610
And what will happen is you'll get a
text I think in a week or

1111
00:59:12.610 --> 00:59:16.420
so with easy to follow instructions of
how to pick a group for

1112
00:59:16.420 --> 00:59:16.960
the Journey.

1113
00:59:17.020 --> 00:59:20.770
Or if you want to do either
those, we have this convenient third

1114
00:59:20.770 --> 00:59:23.530
button, "I have no desire to
grow spiritually," you click that

1115
00:59:23.530 --> 00:59:27.310
button and we'll see
you or not later.

1116
00:59:28.360 --> 00:59:29.440
Thanks for sticking
with us today.

1117
00:59:29.470 --> 00:59:31.330
Next week is the
conclusion of this series.

1118
00:59:31.540 --> 00:59:32.710
Brian will be back.

1119
00:59:32.730 --> 00:59:34.120
Make sure you don't miss it.

1120
00:59:34.150 --> 00:59:35.080
Have a great week.

1121
00:59:35.440 --> 00:59:35.920
We'll see you then.

1122
00:59:35.950 --> 00:59:36.160
Bye.

1123
00:59:37.790 --> 00:59:39.380
>> I mean, I
hope you enjoyed service.

1124
00:59:39.410 --> 00:59:41.090
Thanks for joining
us this weekend.

1125
00:59:41.330 --> 00:59:44.030
If you need prayer around anything
or if you have a question

1126
00:59:44.030 --> 00:59:46.970
about Crossroads, you can
go to Crossroads.net, click

1127
00:59:47.180 --> 00:59:48.050
the chat button.

1128
00:59:48.290 --> 00:59:51.680
We'll see you next week for the
last week of How to Hear God.

1129
00:59:51.920 --> 00:59:52.250
Thanks.
Process, journal or discuss the themes of this article - here's a few questions to get the ball rolling...

Welcome to the Chaser—a few questions after the weekend service to start conversations. If this is your first time in a group, or your group has new members, take a few minutes and introduce yourself. Two truths and a lie is always a good place to start.

  1. We’re three weeks into our How to Hear God series. What do you believe about hearing from God? Can we? Why or why not?

  2. “Follow your heart” may be some seriously bad advice. Read Jeremiah 17:9 out loud and discuss it. How has your heart led you astray?

  3. If our heart is a liar, where do we turn? Read Proverbs 11:14 for a possible answer. Has the advice of a friend or counselor ever helped you out of a jam? What happened?

  4. A wise counselor is someone who knows and loves God, and knows and loves you. How would you tell if someone met those criteria? Discuss it as a group.

  5. We’re going to practice hearing from God for each other. Sit in silence as a group for 3 minutes. (Yes, set a timer.) In that time, silently ask God for a word or message for each of your group members. If what comes to mind is strengthening, encouraging, or comforting share it with the person. (And if you don’t hear anything, that’s okay!)

Challenge

Ready for a chance at finding some wise counselors and making some new friends? Head to crossroads.net/journey and sign up. Or better yet, make plans to do the journey together with this group.
