  • 00:00:02
    - Today we're going to see the Christmas story unfold
  • 00:00:05
and what it means for your life today.
  • 00:00:07
Hey, welcome to Crossroads and Merry Christmas.
  • 00:00:10
I'm Andy, the community pastor for Crossroads Anywhere.
  • 00:00:12
And Crossroads is a church that you can be a part of
  • 00:00:14
no matter where you live or what you believe about God.
  • 00:00:17
We're so glad that you joined us,
  • 00:00:18
and we hope that you'll come back again
  • 00:00:20
and join us again in the New Year.
  • 00:00:21
New services come out every Saturday at 5:00 pm eastern,
  • 00:00:24
and you can watch anytime on your phone or TV
  • 00:00:27
just by downloading the Crossroads Anywhere App.
  • 00:00:30
Now let's all take a deep breath.
  • 00:00:34
    Christmas can be stressful, right?
  • 00:00:36
But at the same time, it is supposed to bring us
  • 00:00:39
    joy, peace and hope.
  • 00:00:41
The stress of family, shopping and traffic
  • 00:00:43
and all that at Christmas just couldn't be
  • 00:00:45
more different from what Jesus offers.
  • 00:00:48
    So what are we missing?
  • 00:00:50
Sometimes I'm tempted to think that, like,
  • 00:00:52
just by being Christmas, I'm going to magically feel better,
  • 00:00:55
but that's not the way it works.
  • 00:00:56
We can't wait for the holidays,
  • 00:00:58
but then they've come and gone again.
  • 00:01:01
But what if Christmas is more than just a holiday?
  • 00:01:04
I believe that we can experience hope and joy this Christmas.
  • 00:01:07
And today we're going to hear from
  • 00:01:09
    our senior pastor Brian Tome
  • 00:01:10
about the real story of Christmas
  • 00:01:12
and what it means for our lives today.
  • 00:01:15
Another really cool thing this year is
  • 00:01:17
at the end of the experience in the Crossroads App,
  • 00:01:19
    you'll be able to explore
  • 00:01:20
    an interactive digital Christmas story
  • 00:01:22
that goes along with today's service.
  • 00:01:24
It'll put you in the middle of the story,
  • 00:01:26
and it's a fun and a meaningful experience
  • 00:01:28
to share with family and friends this Christmas.
  • 00:01:30
There are so many opportunities that you can discover
  • 00:01:32
in the app made just for you, just to help you
  • 00:01:35
connect with God, like Healing Groups,
  • 00:01:37
    Nights of prayer, daily journal,
  • 00:01:39
reading, all kinds of great stuff.
  • 00:01:41
We're going to start off our time
  • 00:01:42
by singing some classic Christmas songs.
  • 00:01:44
    And these aren't just sing-a-longs,
  • 00:01:46
they're actually songs about and to Jesus.
  • 00:01:50
When we put our focus on Him,
  • 00:01:51
it takes it off of ourselves
  • 00:01:52
and the stress of everyday life
  • 00:01:54
and turns it towards that peace, that hope,
  • 00:01:57
and that joy that only Jesus can bring.
  • 00:02:03
Merry Christmas everyone. Let's sing Joy to the World.
  • 00:12:21
    - It's so good to be together.
  • 00:12:23
I'm so glad you're here today.
  • 00:12:24
Hey, why don't you turn to somebody around you,
  • 00:12:26
    "Just say Merry Christmas,
  • 00:12:28
glad to be here with you," then you can have a seat.
  • 00:12:37
    - For hundreds of years, God told His family
  • 00:12:40
that he would send them a king,
  • 00:12:42
someone who would rescue them and make everything right.
  • 00:12:47
Now, when you hear the word king,
  • 00:12:49
you probably think of this, right?
  • 00:12:53
A powerful ruler with a crown and fancy clothes
  • 00:12:57
who's big and strong and cool.
  • 00:12:59
Well, that's what God's family thought, too.
  • 00:13:02
They were expecting a mighty leader and a powerful warrior.
  • 00:13:06
Someone who would defeat their enemies
  • 00:13:08
and rule with an iron fist.
  • 00:13:11
Well, finally, after all that time,
  • 00:13:13
God was ready to send the rescuer,
  • 00:13:16
His very own Son, Jesus, to be with us on earth.
  • 00:13:20
And when the rescuer arrived, He was a baby.
  • 00:13:26
Wait? A baby? Like a tiny, chunky, giggling,
  • 00:13:30
    crying, constantly pooping baby?
  • 00:13:34
But people were expecting a powerful king,
  • 00:13:36
someone big and strong and fierce.
  • 00:13:40
And baby Jesus didn't seem to be
  • 00:13:42
any of those things at first.
  • 00:13:44
    People probably wondered,
  • 00:13:46
could a baby king be a powerful ruler?
  • 00:13:49
Could a baby king defeat their enemies?
  • 00:13:51
Could a baby king do anything other than sleep and eat?
  • 00:13:55
Some people thought that a baby king
  • 00:13:57
    just wasn't going to work,
  • 00:13:59
but others said, "You don't get it.
  • 00:14:02
This king is different," because as it turns out,
  • 00:14:06
yes, the baby king was going to make
  • 00:14:09
all the difference in the world,
  • 00:14:11
just not in the way people thought He would.
  • 00:14:13
As baby Jesus became a grown up, He loved his enemies
  • 00:14:17
    and served others before Himself.
  • 00:14:19
    He healed people of sickness
  • 00:14:21
and brought people back to life.
  • 00:14:23
He took care of the poor, gave His life for us,
  • 00:14:25
    and rose from the dead.
  • 00:14:27
He showed us all what God's kingdom is like.
  • 00:14:30
And He did it by loving God and loving people.
  • 00:14:34
This is the King that God had promised,
  • 00:14:38
a good, loving, powerful, praiseworthy king
  • 00:14:42
born as a baby who was helpless and small
  • 00:14:46
    and probably a little smelly.
  • 00:15:02
Matthew 2:3-11: When Herod the king heard this,
  • 00:15:08
he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
  • 00:15:11
And assembling all the chief priests
  • 00:15:14
and scribes of the people, he inquired of them
  • 00:15:17
where the Christ was to be born.
  • 00:15:19
They told him in Bethlehem of Judea.
  • 00:15:22
For so it is written by the prophet,
  • 00:15:25
"And you, oh, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
  • 00:15:29
are by no means least to a shepherd --
  • 00:15:32
I mean among the rulers of Judah,
  • 00:15:34
for from you shall come a ruler
  • 00:15:36
who will shepherd my people Israel."
  • 00:15:39
When Herod summoned the wise men secretly,
  • 00:15:43
and ascertained from them what time
  • 00:15:45
the star had appeared, he sent them to Bethlehem,
  • 00:15:49
saying, "Go and search diligently for the child.
  • 00:15:53
And when you found Him, bring me word
  • 00:15:56
that I too may come and worship Him."
  • 00:15:58
After listening to the king, they went on their way.
  • 00:16:02
And behold the star that they had seen
  • 00:16:04
when it was went before them until it came to rest
  • 00:16:08
over the place where the child was.
  • 00:16:10
    When they saw the star,
  • 00:16:11
they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.
  • 00:16:14
And going into the house they saw the child
  • 00:16:17
with Mary, his mother, and they fell down
  • 00:16:20
    and worshiped Him.
  • 00:16:21
Then opening their treasures, they offered Him gifts,
  • 00:16:26
gold and frankincense and myrrh. Amen.
  • 00:16:40
    - Ascertained, exceedingly.
  • 00:16:46
Someone's been having their parents read to them.
  • 00:16:48
Impressive. Way to go, Wyatt. Way to go.
  • 00:17:04
Hi, my name is Brian Tome.
  • 00:17:05
I'm what's known as a senior pastor around here.
  • 00:17:07
It's great to have everybody here
  • 00:17:09
    as we celebrate Christmas Eve.
  • 00:17:11
Let's pray before we go any further, okay?
  • 00:17:13
God, thank You for giving us time to slow down
  • 00:17:17
and also to look up, to look up to the greatest --
  • 00:17:20
One of the greatest things that's ever been told.
  • 00:17:23
    And it's true.
  • 00:17:24
Help me to talk about it clearly,
  • 00:17:25
and I pray that You would clearly work
  • 00:17:27
in every heart right now, no matter where we are.
  • 00:17:31
And I pray these things according to the character
  • 00:17:34
    and identity of Jesus.
  • 00:17:39
You know, Christmas is a beautiful time,
  • 00:17:41
and I want to talk about the basic story of Christmas.
  • 00:17:44
But I also know that a picture is worth a thousand words.
  • 00:17:48
So we're going to take a a little stroll
  • 00:17:51
    through a book today.
  • 00:18:01
This is sort of classic Christmas, isn't it?
  • 00:18:05
Just beautiful images., snow, even though
  • 00:18:08
there's very rarely snow in the Middle East,
  • 00:18:12
    reindeer, nature scenes.
  • 00:18:15
There's something great about the nostalgia of Christmas,
  • 00:18:22
the beauty of Christmas, and I might even say
  • 00:18:24
    the actual transcendence of Christmas.
  • 00:18:27
And probably all of us in here
  • 00:18:29
have something that makes us love Christmas.
  • 00:18:33
You have some favorite Christmas memory.
  • 00:18:36
For me, my favorite thing is my kids have gotten married.
  • 00:18:40
And what happens is, obviously, LiB and I,
  • 00:18:43
we're the least important of all of their in-laws
  • 00:18:46
because we don't get them on Christmas Eve
  • 00:18:48
or Christmas, we get them the day after.
  • 00:18:49
So they all go someplace else, then we finally
  • 00:18:51
get them actually on the evening of Christmas,
  • 00:18:53
which actually works out really well for us
  • 00:18:55
because we have a bit of a longer holiday that way.
  • 00:18:58
And whether it's Christmas night, Christmas Eve,
  • 00:19:00
whatever it's been, everyone comes over
  • 00:19:02
and we light every candle we possibly can
  • 00:19:05
in the kitchen and we put all kind of finger foods out
  • 00:19:08
and we talk about things and we set like dreams,
  • 00:19:12
like what would be dream things
  • 00:19:14
that God might do in our lives over the next year.
  • 00:19:17
We write them down, and we also revisit
  • 00:19:19
from last year what people said.
  • 00:19:21
    It's wonderful.
  • 00:19:22
And that's just one of the many memories I have.
  • 00:19:26
    I love Christmas.
  • 00:19:28
Except there's one thing I don't like about Christmas.
  • 00:19:30
You know what that is? That's the stress.
  • 00:19:32
I don't like the stress of Christmas.
  • 00:19:35
I don't like the chaos of Christmas.
  • 00:19:38
I don't like the endless meetings that have to be had,
  • 00:19:41
the endless holiday parties, the endless expectations.
  • 00:19:43
    It's stressful.
  • 00:19:45
In fact, some of you may be here
  • 00:19:48
and you're stressed to be here.
  • 00:19:50
You're stressed you had to deal with traffic.
  • 00:19:51
You're stressed you're going to have to
  • 00:19:53
deal with traffic on your way out.
  • 00:19:54
You're stressed because maybe your friend invited you,
  • 00:19:56
and you're just trying to make that friend like you
  • 00:19:58
so they keep you as your friend.
  • 00:20:00
And it's like one more obligation.
  • 00:20:01
And many of us, Christmas is just chaos
  • 00:20:04
    and calamity and stress.
  • 00:20:07
Today we're going to use one of the things we got,
  • 00:20:10
we're going to use this today.
  • 00:20:12
And uh, if you're if you're streaming with us online
  • 00:20:15
or wherever you are right now, uh,
  • 00:20:17
you could just have a pen of some sort
  • 00:20:19
and you can write on something,
  • 00:20:20
you can still be able to do this exercise.
  • 00:20:23
What is it about -- What is it about stress?
  • 00:20:28
Do you know what stress is?
  • 00:20:29
Whatever you stress as most important in your life
  • 00:20:32
    is what brings you stress.
  • 00:20:34
Our stress comes from what we stress.
  • 00:20:37
So if you stress cleanliness, then you stress
  • 00:20:41
when your baseboards aren't cleaned every week
  • 00:20:43
or every month, whatever it is.
  • 00:20:44
If you stress finances because that's kind of,
  • 00:20:47
    like, the most important thing,
  • 00:20:49
then you stress whenever the stock market takes a dive.
  • 00:20:53
And many of us, for our whole life,
  • 00:20:56
we've been told to have a family and family beautiful.
  • 00:20:58
We've been told what a picture of a family is,
  • 00:21:00
and we stress that family is important.
  • 00:21:02
And then we find ourself in a place of life
  • 00:21:05
where my life doesn't line up with the Hallmark ideal.
  • 00:21:10
And I've been stressing this important
  • 00:21:12
and now it doesn't fit and now I'm stressed
  • 00:21:15
because what does this mean for me?
  • 00:21:18
We go from the beauty of Christmas, the serenity.
  • 00:21:23
But unfortunately there's just chaos and stress for us.
  • 00:21:28
We have stress over finances maybe.
  • 00:21:30
I've learned that, uh, I read in the New York Times
  • 00:21:33
last couple of weeks that young entrepreneurial kids
  • 00:21:37
who are tech savvy are now making
  • 00:21:38
    PowerPoint presentations for their parents
  • 00:21:41
on the gifts that they should get for Christmas.
  • 00:21:44
Yeah, yeah, apparently it's pretty, pretty effective.
  • 00:21:47
Here's what young one young lady says. She says:
  • 00:22:07
We need to somehow get away from the stress
  • 00:22:12
and get connected to the classic Christmas story.
  • 00:22:15
And who better to tell us the classic,
  • 00:22:17
    classic Christmas story than Macy's?
  • 00:22:23
    - The holidays are here, so head to Macy's
  • 00:22:26
for unbeatable deals on a winter wardrobe
  • 00:22:28
    for the whole family.

    Men's Blazers starting at $49.99.
  • 00:22:32
Cashmere tops for her from $79.99.
  • 00:22:35
And for your little ones, Macy's has
  • 00:22:37
the festive fashions that'll have them saying,
  • 00:22:39
    - "It's too hot!" - "It itches!" - [crying]
  • 00:22:45
    - Tis the season for wrestling
  • 00:22:46
your wiggly little monster into thick winter clothes.
  • 00:22:49
So all month long we're taking 25% off
  • 00:22:52

    - Can't he just wear his jeans?
  • 00:23:05
    - You don't wear jeans to church.
  • 00:23:08
    - And for your little girl, it's half off
  • 00:23:11
all hard, shiny shoes that hurt.
  • 00:23:13
    - Ow, my shoes hurt.
  • 00:23:15
    - Welcome to being a woman, Kylie.
  • 00:23:16
    - And 30% off all holiday rompers
  • 00:23:19
she'll never get off in time.
  • 00:23:21
    - It's wet.
  • 00:23:22
    - Okay, you have to tell mommy when you have to go.
  • 00:23:25
    - And save an extra 10% on snow boots
  • 00:23:27
that are so hard to put on,
  • 00:23:29
it'll strain your marriage. - Sorry.
  • 00:23:31
    - You need to put her foot in sideways and then twist it.
  • 00:23:33
    - Well, if you can do it, then do it.
  • 00:23:35
    - And deals so hot, even frosty --
  • 00:23:38
    - Okay, well, if this is going to be your attitude,
  • 00:23:40
maybe we should tell my mom we're not coming.
  • 00:23:42
    - And deals so -- - Oh, no.
  • 00:23:44
    - Get down to Macy's.
  • 00:23:47
They clothes they'll hate create the memories you'll love.
  • 00:24:01
    - And somehow, in the chaos of all of this
  • 00:24:05
we're trying to remember the beauty of this
  • 00:24:08
    and actually get connected.
  • 00:24:10
Can I get connected not just to Christmas,
  • 00:24:12
but can I get connected to Christ?
  • 00:24:15
Can I get connected to the original story
  • 00:24:18
    that started it all?
  • 00:24:20
Can I get connected to the One who changed history
  • 00:24:23
and who we date time after?
  • 00:24:25
Is there a way for me to get in sync with Him?
  • 00:24:28
    Yes, we can.
  • 00:24:30
Let's let's turn the page and let a picture talk for us.
  • 00:24:42
Here we have the the classic,
  • 00:24:44
the classic manger scene, the classic nativity set.
  • 00:24:48
And you wouldn't know it by looking
  • 00:24:50
at these things that we may have,
  • 00:24:52
maybe in your entryway or under your tree,
  • 00:24:55
    this classic creche
  • 00:24:58
or the family of Jesus at Christmas.
  • 00:25:01
You wouldn't know this, but for them,
  • 00:25:04
this was unbelievably chaotic and stressful.
  • 00:25:08
Giving birth, first of all, is very stressful,
  • 00:25:11
if you've ever done it or you've seen it, very stressful.
  • 00:25:17
Giving birth, when the rumor has it that you say
  • 00:25:22
    you're born -- you're you bearing a child
  • 00:25:25
    and you've you're a virgin.
  • 00:25:30
This caused a great deal of turmoil
  • 00:25:32
and a great deal of stress for Mary and Joseph,
  • 00:25:36
as they were under communal pressure
  • 00:25:39
    and they were being shamed.
  • 00:25:41
Add to that they're a family that is on the run.
  • 00:25:45
They're also a family that's the working poor.
  • 00:25:48
    How do we know that?
  • 00:25:49
Well, we know that because when Jesus
  • 00:25:51
is wrapped in swaddling cloths, that sounds so cute.
  • 00:25:54
But it's not cute, it's a sense of stress because
  • 00:25:57
they don't have enough money to buy a full size blanket.
  • 00:25:59
So they grab -- Logs? Logs, crabs? No, neither one of those.
  • 00:26:05
Rags and cloths and wrap it around their baby.
  • 00:26:08
They don't have a crib, so they put them in a manger.
  • 00:26:11
A manger is a feeding bowl for cattle inside of a stable,
  • 00:26:16
which is where Jesus was born,
  • 00:26:18
because there was no room at the inn.
  • 00:26:21
    This is chaos.
  • 00:26:23
This is actually, I might even say,
  • 00:26:24
    terror inducing for them.
  • 00:26:27
    This is stressful for them.
  • 00:26:29
So if you are Christmas are ever stressed out
  • 00:26:32
or chaotic, the good news is
  • 00:26:34
you're getting back to the original Christmas.
  • 00:26:39
Screams and cries and blood and unmet expectation
  • 00:26:44
and not fitting in, all of this is part of
  • 00:26:48
this beautiful, serene scene that wasn't that serene.
  • 00:26:54
In the book of Luke 2:13 it says this
  • 00:26:57
as an angel comes the shepherds.
  • 00:27:15
    Peace.
  • 00:27:19
You may see inside of your little creche
  • 00:27:22
or inside of your manger scene
  • 00:27:23
if you have one of those at home,
  • 00:27:25
or if you've seen one of those,
  • 00:27:26
you've got barn animals in there.
  • 00:27:28
There's no reference of barn animals in the Bible account.
  • 00:27:31
Maybe they were there since it was a manger.
  • 00:27:33
You've got magi we'll talk about in a moment.
  • 00:27:36
    You've got shepherds.
  • 00:27:38
You've got people from every economic spectrum.
  • 00:27:41
The shepherds were the were the grunt worker,
  • 00:27:44
blue collar guys who weren't respected at all.
  • 00:27:46
And they hear from the shepherd.
  • 00:27:49
The Magi were the elitists from the East
  • 00:27:51
who had very, very, very high incomes
  • 00:27:54
    and brought expensive gifts.
  • 00:27:56
And all of them get to be in on the peace.
  • 00:27:58
I love this: peace, peace on Him who is pleased.
  • 00:28:04
Have you ever considered that God's pleased with you?
  • 00:28:07
You ever considered He's not an angry entity
  • 00:28:11
up in the skies, making a list and checking it twice
  • 00:28:15
and can't wait to whack you?
  • 00:28:17
Have you ever considered that God's actually for you?
  • 00:28:20
Have you ever considered that God actually likes you?
  • 00:28:23
Have you ever considered that God's actually in a good mood?
  • 00:28:28
I was out on a bike trip years and years ago,
  • 00:28:31
and I was over in Albuquerque.
  • 00:28:32
And Albuquerque is sort of the --
  • 00:28:34
This festival they had is sort of
  • 00:28:36
    the Mardi Gras of Albuquerque.
  • 00:28:39
    Our trip was ended.
  • 00:28:40
We just needed to find a place to have a shower.
  • 00:28:42
So we went in and spent the night.
  • 00:28:44
    And it was pretty fun.
  • 00:28:45
In the midst of all the cacophony that was happening,
  • 00:28:48
somebody was holding this sign up:
  • 00:28:51
God is in a good mood.
  • 00:28:54
I like that, God is in a good mood.
  • 00:28:56
He's in a good mood and He brings peace
  • 00:28:59
    on whom His favor rests.
  • 00:29:01
Here's the thing. Here's the thing.
  • 00:29:02
God doesn't necessarily bring a party.
  • 00:29:04
God doesn't necessarily bring a pay raise.
  • 00:29:07
    God doesn't necessarily bring
  • 00:29:09
the perfect person into your life.
  • 00:29:11
    All those things are fine
  • 00:29:12
and getting those all those things is fine,
  • 00:29:14
but none of those things will actually bring you peace.
  • 00:29:18
    A little shot of happiness,
  • 00:29:19
but not actual bring you peace.
  • 00:29:21
When Jesus comes into your life,
  • 00:29:23
when Jesus comes to the world,
  • 00:29:25
He brings actual peace that actually lasts
  • 00:29:28
and there's a favor from God,
  • 00:29:30
this verse says that's actually on your life.
  • 00:29:36
    Let's turn the page.
  • 00:29:38
Let's allow a picture to be worth a thousand words.
  • 00:29:50
I think this is the world's largest pop up book,
  • 00:29:52
    I'm just saying.
  • 00:29:55
I have to be very tender with it.
  • 00:29:58
Here we have what's known as the Three Magi
  • 00:30:01
or the Three Wise Men, even though we're not sure
  • 00:30:03
    that there was three.
  • 00:30:06
And even though the Bible has a word for them,
  • 00:30:09
which is most likely translated Magi, which means
  • 00:30:14
that these were likely people from the Zoroastrian cult
  • 00:30:20
that were in the Far Eastern region
  • 00:30:23
who were very, very spiritual and very, very well healed.
  • 00:30:28
    But they likely didn't understand
  • 00:30:31
the actual God of the Old Testament.
  • 00:30:33
    But they were spiritual people
  • 00:30:35
or people who were interested in the non-material.
  • 00:30:39
I find it interesting that these guys
  • 00:30:43
make their way to see Jesus, and they're maybe
  • 00:30:47
among the least qualified people to do this
  • 00:30:51
because they don't believe in the Bible.
  • 00:30:54
They're not keeping the rules in the Bible.
  • 00:30:56
They don't know things that are in the Bible.
  • 00:30:59
They're not trying to play some religious game.
  • 00:31:01
And that's the way many of us are.
  • 00:31:03
Many of us don't come to God because we're, like,
  • 00:31:05
"I don't know all the rules.
  • 00:31:06
I don't know that I can keep all the rules.
  • 00:31:08
I don't know that I understand all the ins and outs.
  • 00:31:11
I don't know that I can do that.
  • 00:31:12
It's just overwhelming. I'm just not going to do it."
  • 00:31:14
It's like someone trying to pick up a golf club
  • 00:31:16
as an adult when you never had before.
  • 00:31:17
    It's just overwhelming. I can't start now.
  • 00:31:19
    I can't do it now. I can't try a new thing.
  • 00:31:21
And many of us can't try a new spiritual thing,
  • 00:31:23
won't try a new spiritual thing because
  • 00:31:24
    we think we're not qualified
  • 00:31:28
because we think we'll never be good enough in it.
  • 00:31:31
    That's how religious people think.
  • 00:31:33
Jesus didn't start, come to start a religion.
  • 00:31:35
He came to start a relationship with you.
  • 00:31:38
And these folks didn't understand the rules,
  • 00:31:41
all they knew was something was happened
  • 00:31:44
and we have to go there right now.
  • 00:31:46
Here's how Matthew 2:1 puts it,
  • 00:31:48
which is a section that's right before
  • 00:31:50
what we just read earlier. It says this:
  • 00:32:10
The religious leaders, they didn't come to find Jesus,
  • 00:32:15
but these people came to find Jesus.
  • 00:32:20
    They were seekers.
  • 00:32:23
There's kind of a cheesy saying, but it's true.
  • 00:32:26
Sometimes things are cheesy are still true.
  • 00:32:29
The saying is, you may have seen on a bumper sticker,
  • 00:32:31
    wise men still seek Him.
  • 00:32:34
Wise men, wise women still seek Him.
  • 00:32:37
We realize I can't bring peace to myself.
  • 00:32:41
I can't handle the chaos that's in the world.
  • 00:32:44
    I can't save myself.
  • 00:32:46
There's certain problems we get up against that
  • 00:32:48
    I just need God, I can't -- I can't do it.
  • 00:32:52
And I believe part of the reason why
  • 00:32:53
there's so much mental illness in our world,
  • 00:32:56
so much suicide, all those statistics of emotional
  • 00:32:59
and spiritual well-being, all of them are tanking,
  • 00:33:01
I think it's because our culture
  • 00:33:03
is increasingly believing you're on your own.
  • 00:33:07
    You're an accident of evolution,
  • 00:33:09
and there's goo, and then there is you,
  • 00:33:11
and you have no backstop. You have no safety net.
  • 00:33:14
There's nobody who really loves you who's really powerful.
  • 00:33:17
And if I didn't believe and know that there was a God
  • 00:33:21
who did love me and has shown His power for me,
  • 00:33:24
    I don't -- I don't -- I'd hate to think what I --
  • 00:33:26
Where I would be or what I would do.
  • 00:33:29
And so we seek Him, we don't have all the answers,
  • 00:33:32
but we seek because we want to find
  • 00:33:35
    the peace that passes understanding
  • 00:33:37
and we want to worship Him.
  • 00:33:39
These wise men came to worship Him.
  • 00:33:43
These Magi came to lay down their gifts,
  • 00:33:45
    expensive gifts, gold, frankincense, myrrh.
  • 00:33:48
It's a whole other talk to talk about those things.
  • 00:33:50
    But just suffice to say,
  • 00:33:52
these people laid down things of value.
  • 00:33:56
And today we're going to have the ability
  • 00:33:58
to lay down something of value.
  • 00:34:00
    Why would they do this?
  • 00:34:02
They did this because they wanted to worship this King.
  • 00:34:04
In the book of John 1:1-5,
  • 00:34:07
has one of the best descriptions of who Jesus was.
  • 00:34:09
Because Jesus didn't originate in Bethlehem
  • 00:34:12
at Christmas time, He's always been is God.
  • 00:34:15
    Here's how John puts it:
  • 00:34:36
It says that at the beginning of all of creation
  • 00:34:39
    Jesus was present.
  • 00:34:40
When He goes from heaven and He takes on flesh
  • 00:34:43
and is born, it is a massive sacrifice.
  • 00:34:46
    It is chaotic for Him.
  • 00:34:50
This would be like going from being in the heavens,
  • 00:34:53
being worshiped by angels, to now being a human.
  • 00:34:58
    Not only that, a baby.
  • 00:35:00
Not only that, a baby in poverty.
  • 00:35:01
Not only that, a baby that has a scandalous start
  • 00:35:05
    by many people's estimation.
  • 00:35:07
I mean, it's as hard as it could be.
  • 00:35:11
It'd be like you or I becoming a slug,
  • 00:35:14
you or I becoming a bedbug.
  • 00:35:17
Like, I don't want to be that.
  • 00:35:18
    I know, I know, God didn't either, I don't think.
  • 00:35:21
But why did He do that?
  • 00:35:22
He did it so that you and I would understand God.
  • 00:35:26
He took on flesh so we could get Him.
  • 00:35:28
If you want to understand what God is,
  • 00:35:30
    you look to Jesus.
  • 00:35:31
Jesus says, "When you've seen Me,
  • 00:35:32
    you've seen the Father."
  • 00:35:33
He says, "I and the Father are one."
  • 00:35:37
These folks go on a journey and they seek the One who is.
  • 00:35:43
What they laid down is something
  • 00:35:47
we're going to be able to have a moment with right now.
  • 00:35:50
Go ahead and take that crown out
  • 00:35:53
and maybe take your Sharpie out as well.
  • 00:36:05
This represents the final chapter for us today.
  • 00:36:25
The crown is the thing that you stress.
  • 00:36:29
The crown is the thing that's the most important thing to you.
  • 00:36:33
It's the thing that your life revolves around.
  • 00:36:36
When the wise men come to Jesus,
  • 00:36:38
when the Magi come to Jesus, they lay down
  • 00:36:41
their gifts and they lay down their crown.
  • 00:36:45
They say, "You're here and we're here.
  • 00:36:48
Even though you're a little baby,
  • 00:36:49
in terms of spiritual authority and importance,
  • 00:36:53
    You are more than me."
  • 00:36:55
And they weren't playing games with Him at all.
  • 00:36:58
They came as seekers and they found Him
  • 00:37:00
and they bowed down and they worship Him.
  • 00:37:02
What does it mean to worship Him?
  • 00:37:03
We can worship Him when we sing.
  • 00:37:05
    That's fine, that's good.
  • 00:37:06
But the ultimate worship God is looking for
  • 00:37:08
is will you and I lay down our crown?
  • 00:37:11
Will we lay down the thing that stresses us?
  • 00:37:15
Will we not stress over the thing that stresses us?
  • 00:37:19
Because that is the most important thing to me:
  • 00:37:21
my family beautiful, my body beautiful,
  • 00:37:24
    my financial picture beautiful,
  • 00:37:26
    my whatever it is beautiful,
  • 00:37:28
will I lay that down and recognize that
  • 00:37:31
that thing is actually my crown, that's my identity?
  • 00:37:35
That's the most important thing to me.
  • 00:37:37
And will I take that off
  • 00:37:40
and put it at the feet of Jesus?
  • 00:37:44
If you know what that is for you,
  • 00:37:45
if you know what the source of your chaos is,
  • 00:37:48
if you know what it is that you stress,
  • 00:37:51
that brings you stress, what it is,
  • 00:37:53
in other words, that you worship,
  • 00:37:54
even though you may have never put it that way.
  • 00:37:56
I want you to just write it on there.
  • 00:37:58
Write right down that thing. What is it?
  • 00:38:17
I've got a sweater on, by the way, I put on their aging.
  • 00:38:24
    I have a sweater on.
  • 00:38:25
You know, it's, uh, kind of ugly.
  • 00:38:27
I know, I know it. You tell me. I know.
  • 00:38:31
I've been wearing this sweater for 25 years
  • 00:38:33
    on Christmas Eve. 25 years.
  • 00:38:35
Pull it out because I have
  • 00:38:37
a lot of memories associated with it.
  • 00:38:38
And I just realized, my goodness, 25 years.
  • 00:38:41
How long have I been doing this for?
  • 00:38:44
    What's going on with me?
  • 00:38:46
I don't look the same as I did way back when.
  • 00:38:49
Things are changing in my life,
  • 00:38:50
things that need to change in my life
  • 00:38:53
and will I embrace the things
  • 00:38:54
that need to change in my life
  • 00:38:57
    and go with the seasons,
  • 00:38:58
the new seasons God's taking me in or not?
  • 00:39:01
Is that my crown? What is yours?
  • 00:39:03
What is the thing that everything revolves around?
  • 00:39:07
Let's get ready to worship God right now.
  • 00:39:10
We're going to have a really profound moment with this.
  • 00:39:13
Just when you think the service is over, it's not over.
  • 00:39:15
Hold on just from a very profound moment with this,
  • 00:39:19
but let's use our voices right now
  • 00:39:21
and let's stand and let's worship Him.
  • 00:39:26
    - Put your hands together like this. All together.
  • 00:39:34
We're going to say Your kingdom come
  • 00:39:35
    and Your will be done.
  • 00:40:22
    - This Christmas can be different
  • 00:44:23
because of the story of Jesus.
  • 00:44:25
He wasn't just a baby, He was a King.
  • 00:44:27
And when we recognize that and put Him first in our lives,
  • 00:44:30
we get the real hope, peace, and joy of Christmas.
  • 00:44:33
Like Brian said, this is a choice for you to make.
  • 00:44:36
Will you lay down your crown to Jesus and leave it behind,
  • 00:44:38
or will you keep doing what you've been doing?
  • 00:44:41
We're going to have a chance to do this right now
  • 00:44:43
    wherever you are.
  • 00:44:45

  • 00:44:49

  • 00:44:51
    There's a quote that I love that I heard
  • 00:44:53
that it says that the Bible isn't just
  • 00:44:56
the story of things that have happened,
  • 00:44:57
it's the story of things that are still happening today.
  • 00:45:01
And I think that's so true.
  • 00:45:02
The story of Christmas, of God, of Immanuel
  • 00:45:05
coming to be with us in a world that's hurting
  • 00:45:07
and broken, of God's light shining
  • 00:45:10
in the midst of darkness, can be as true
  • 00:45:12
for you right now, right now, wherever you are today
  • 00:45:15
as it was 2000 years ago.
  • 00:45:18
    Download the Crossroads Anywhere App,

  • 00:45:26
to put a crown at the feet of His throne,
  • 00:45:28
and to choose to move forward on a new path
  • 00:45:31
and to take a next step on your journey with God.
  • 00:45:35
And don't forget, as we wrap up Christmas
  • 00:45:36

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
  • 00:45:51
    - How are you going to spend your year?
  • 00:45:55
Are you going to do the same thing you've always done?

Or are you going to go on a new adventure?
  • 00:46:03
Are you going to play it safe or take a risk?
  • 00:46:06
What if this year you pushed yourself,
  • 00:46:10
got outside your comfort zone, helped other people,
  • 00:46:13
    went somewhere extraordinary?
  • 00:46:16
What if you discovered what God wants for your life,
  • 00:46:19
made new friends and laughed until you couldn't breathe?
