  • 00:00:00
    - This verse is one of the key reasons
  • 00:00:03
why you would not like the Bible
  • 00:00:05
    and why you would believe
  • 00:00:06
the people who believe the Bible are idiots.
  • 00:00:08
The Bible is freeing you up
  • 00:00:10
to be honest with how life is hard.
  • 00:00:24
    - Where are we in the Bible?
  • 00:00:28
Let's begin at the beginning, shall we?
  • 00:00:30
The Bible begins in the Old Testament,
  • 00:00:32
    written around 3500 years ago.
  • 00:00:34
The first five books of the Old Testament:
  • 00:00:37
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy,
  • 00:00:41
are known as the Pentateuch, or books of the law.
  • 00:00:49
The next 12 books: Joshua, Judges, Ruth,
  • 00:00:52
    1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings,
  • 00:00:55
1 Chronicle, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther.
  • 00:00:58
    Whew, That's a lot.
  • 00:01:00
These are known as the historical books.
  • 00:01:07
This brings us to the books of the Bible
  • 00:01:09
    known as the Wisdom Literature.
  • 00:01:12
It starts with Job and then into
  • 00:01:14
a collection of 150 lyrical poems known as The Psalms.
  • 00:01:42
    - Life is hard and God is able.
  • 00:01:46
Hey, I'm Brian. Great to be with you today.
  • 00:01:49
    It is hard.
  • 00:01:50
I hope that's not the clue phone ringing for you.
  • 00:01:53
You've probably figured out by now
  • 00:01:54
it is hard and God is able.
  • 00:01:57
One of the ways that we can cope with the difficulty
  • 00:02:01
    is by connecting with God,
  • 00:02:02
which I'm going to try to help you do that today.
  • 00:02:04
And we're going to start a new series
  • 00:02:06
    in the Book of Psalms.
  • 00:02:07
Psalms, some people mispronounce as songs,
  • 00:02:10
    which is an understandable thing
  • 00:02:12
    because Psalms actually are songs.
  • 00:02:14
I'm in a place right now
  • 00:02:15
where people perform music and songs.
  • 00:02:18
There's something about lifting up our hearts
  • 00:02:20
and saying things that makes a way for us
  • 00:02:23
    spiritually and also actually emotionally.
  • 00:02:27
Psalms has all different kinds of Psalms.
  • 00:02:29
There are Psalms that are meant to be Thanksgiving.
  • 00:02:31
In the 150 Psalms. there's a lot of them.
  • 00:02:33
    It's a big, big book.
  • 00:02:35
So if you ever read like an old school Bible study
  • 00:02:37
where someone says, "Open up your Bibles,
  • 00:02:39
your paper Bibles to the book of Psalms."
  • 00:02:41
A little hint open up to the middle of the Bible.
  • 00:02:44
    It'll just fall open.
  • 00:02:45
And in the midst of that large, large book in the Bible,
  • 00:02:48
150 chapters, some of those are known as Psalms
  • 00:02:52
or songs because they would be used in worship
  • 00:02:54
of Thanksgiving where we're giving God thanks.
  • 00:02:57
Some of them are are known as Psalms of Lament,
  • 00:03:00
where we're just saying, "God, this is rough,
  • 00:03:03
    man, this is tough."
  • 00:03:05
I'm just lamenting the state that my life is in,
  • 00:03:07
where I am financially or where I am emotionally
  • 00:03:10
or where I am spiritually or whatever it is.
  • 00:03:12
    I'm just lamenting.
  • 00:03:13
I'm just sitting in the crap of where I am.
  • 00:03:16
There are Psalms that do that.
  • 00:03:17
    And then there's Psalms,
  • 00:03:19
the one we're going to look at today
  • 00:03:20
is known as an Imprecatory Psalm.
  • 00:03:23
It's a Psalm where you're just needing to vent,
  • 00:03:26
your need to say whatever you need to say to get to God.
  • 00:03:29
And you just need to let it all out.
  • 00:03:31
And there's anger and there's bitterness,
  • 00:03:33
    and there's, ugh.
  • 00:03:34
When I feel that way, there are certain Psalms
  • 00:03:38
I just go to and I just [grunts]
  • 00:03:39
or when it comes on the radio,
  • 00:03:41
I immediately go to it [grunts]
  • 00:03:42
    and I just [grunts].
  • 00:03:43
I'm kind of like that, you know.
  • 00:03:45
    I think of a girlfriend
  • 00:03:46
who might have dumped me in junior high,
  • 00:03:48
like, [grunts] "Jane Pessoal," you know?
  • 00:03:50
[grunts] just, [grunts], it's just like that.
  • 00:03:53
Here's one song that I do.
  • 00:03:56
And if you notice, as I do this in a music venue
  • 00:03:59
where people actually know how to sing,
  • 00:04:01
I'm not one of those folks. I'm not.
  • 00:04:03
I do this for my own benefit.
  • 00:04:07
And we need to learn to connect with God
  • 00:04:09
through music and through the Psalms or through prayers,
  • 00:04:12
which I'm going to help you do today
  • 00:04:13
    for your own benefit.
  • 00:04:15
Not just for the benefit of God,
  • 00:04:16
because He wants to hear from you,
  • 00:04:18
but also for your own benefit.
  • 00:04:20
    Here is one such song.
  • 00:04:27
[music: Go your own way, Fleetwood Mac]
  • 00:05:15
I don't know if you enjoyed that or not.
  • 00:05:17
    Probably not, but I did.
  • 00:05:19
I got something out of me.
  • 00:05:21
This is part of what the Psalms are about.
  • 00:05:25
Most of them are written by King David,
  • 00:05:28
but there are actually more than seven authors
  • 00:05:30
that are named inside of the Psalms.
  • 00:05:33
The one we're going to look at today, Psalm 137,
  • 00:05:36
it's certainly not written by King David
  • 00:05:38
because it came around long, long after he died.
  • 00:05:43
It was when the nation of Israel was in bondage
  • 00:05:46
and captivity and had been thrown out of
  • 00:05:48
or exiled out of their land,
  • 00:05:51
out of what's known as the holy city of Zion.
  • 00:05:54
Here's what it says in the Book of Psalms 137.
  • 00:06:04
    They're devastated, emotionally devastated.
  • 00:06:08
They're remembering their old, ancient city,
  • 00:06:10
    and they're weeping.
  • 00:06:12
    Verse two:
  • 00:06:27
They took their lyre, or their rough guitar,
  • 00:06:29
and they hung it up and said, "We're done with music.
  • 00:06:31
No more happy songs for us. We're done with it."
  • 00:06:34
In fact, their tormenters, you can kind of imagine them
  • 00:06:36
as maybe drunken, drunken sailors or drunken soldiers,
  • 00:06:41
like, "Hey, hey, sing us one of those songs of Zion."
  • 00:06:44
Like, "Oh, my goodness, this is so bad.
  • 00:06:46
Not only can I not sing out of joy,
  • 00:06:48
I've got to actually sing to make
  • 00:06:50
a bunch of drunk people or a bunch of tormentors
  • 00:06:52
    actually happy?"
  • 00:06:54
    Then verse four:
  • 00:07:06
They say, "How in the world am I supposed to sing
  • 00:07:09
in a situation like this? God, I can't do it.
  • 00:07:12
    I can't do it. I can't sing like this.
  • 00:07:14
In fact, if I've got to sing, have me forget
  • 00:07:17
how to strum the lyre, how to strum the guitar."
  • 00:07:21
Then they continue with this emotional venting to God.
  • 00:07:26
    Verse six:
  • 00:07:37
They say, "God, I'm feeling emotional right now.
  • 00:07:40
    I'm feeling life is hard.
  • 00:07:41
But I want -- I want to have You as my highest joy."
  • 00:07:45
    Then verse seven:
  • 00:07:56
They say, "Remember God, how they were taunting,
  • 00:07:58
remember how they wanted everything to go down.
  • 00:08:00
Just remember, I'm remembering it and I'm feeling it.
  • 00:08:02
I'm feeling it right now. I'm emoting right now."
  • 00:08:04
    This is Imprecatory Psalm.
  • 00:08:06
"I'm feeling it right now. I'm saying how I feel, God."
  • 00:08:10
    And then verse eight:
  • 00:08:20
Yeah, this is no like love your enemy as yourself.
  • 00:08:22
They're feeling it and saying, "Oh, my gosh,
  • 00:08:25
I hope you get yours. May yours come your way."
  • 00:08:28
And then, it almost sounds like the New Testament
  • 00:08:32
    for just a split second.
  • 00:08:35
It sounds like Jesus actually in the Sermon on the Mount
  • 00:08:40
when they say in verse nine:
  • 00:08:50
    Oh, my goodness.
  • 00:08:53
Jesus said blessed is the peacemaker,
  • 00:08:56
blessed is he who is poor in spirit.
  • 00:08:58
And here we have the psalmist saying,
  • 00:08:59
"Blessed is he who takes your little ones
  • 00:09:02
and dashes them against the rock." Wow.
  • 00:09:07
This verse is one of the key reasons
  • 00:09:10
why you would not like the Bible
  • 00:09:11
and why you would believe that
  • 00:09:13
people who believe the Bible are idiots.
  • 00:09:15
How in the world can you have a holy book
  • 00:09:17
where your high literature is telling God
  • 00:09:21
take their infants and dash them against rocks?
  • 00:09:25
I mean, we unfortunately in our culture,
  • 00:09:27
in too, too recent times, like weeks, days,
  • 00:09:32
have had little ones killed who were innocent.
  • 00:09:35
Aren't little ones innocent, especially babies?
  • 00:09:38
And yet we have the Bible calling seemingly
  • 00:09:41
for the destruction of this. Why is this?
  • 00:09:44
I want to get into that in a moment,
  • 00:09:45
but I just want to make sure that we understand
  • 00:09:48
that the Bible is freeing you up
  • 00:09:51
to be honest with how life is hard.
  • 00:09:56
    This is Father's Day. I'm a father,
  • 00:09:58
so I've got a lot of connection with Father's Day.
  • 00:10:02
    It's also Juneteenth.
  • 00:10:04
It's another holiday, a great holiday
  • 00:10:07
    that's actually in our country
  • 00:10:08
that I don't have as much emotional buy in with
  • 00:10:11
because I'm white, but I am emotionally
  • 00:10:13
getting more and more attached to it
  • 00:10:15
as I understand the plight of African Americans
  • 00:10:18
and former slaves way back when.
  • 00:10:20
Juneteenth is about all of the slaves, former slaves,
  • 00:10:24
finally understanding that they are free.
  • 00:10:27
And I find it ironic, I picked this Psalm months ago
  • 00:10:31
not knowing that this is going to fall
  • 00:10:33
    right here on Juneteenth,
  • 00:10:35
    because African Americans, former slaves,
  • 00:10:38
have had an Imprecatory Psalm on their lips
  • 00:10:42
for a long, long, long time.
  • 00:10:44
This psalm wasn't just used by former slaves.
  • 00:10:47
It was also used by the original people
  • 00:10:50
who came to America from Europe, the Pilgrims.
  • 00:10:53
The Pilgrims would quote the Psalm
  • 00:10:55
and say this Psalm again because they felt like
  • 00:10:56
they had come from a foreign land,
  • 00:10:59
just like the nation of Israel felt like
  • 00:11:01
they came from another land to a foreign land.
  • 00:11:03
Here, the Pilgrims, the original pilgrims
  • 00:11:05
felt like they weren't welcomed with
  • 00:11:07
their religious beliefs back where they were in Europe,
  • 00:11:09
and they came to a land where
  • 00:11:10
    they weren't understood and accepted,
  • 00:11:12
    and that's how they felt.
  • 00:11:14
And they would quote this Psalm all the time.
  • 00:11:16
And then this Psalm was quoted by Frederick Douglass
  • 00:11:21
and others who would see this as the plight
  • 00:11:25
of the former slaves, of Africans.
  • 00:11:28
It was a song that's been put into disco.
  • 00:11:31
They actually wanted me to sing that song.
  • 00:11:32
I would not sing that song.
  • 00:11:34
This Psalm's been put in all different types
  • 00:11:36
of music styles because it endures.
  • 00:11:38
In the Black Music Research Journal,
  • 00:11:41
    it's called Babylon Revisited,
  • 00:11:43
Psalm 137 as an American protest Psalm.
  • 00:11:45
And here's a portion of what the article says:
  • 00:12:24
This is why many African Americans
  • 00:12:26
    have identified with Psalm 137.
  • 00:12:28
It's why the original pilgrims, the original Puritans
  • 00:12:30
    identified as Psalm 137.
  • 00:12:32
And it's also why you today may identify with it.
  • 00:12:36
    It wasn't written by David,
  • 00:12:38
    because King David didn't experience
  • 00:12:41
    this oppression with Babylon,
  • 00:12:42
but he would have written something like this
  • 00:12:45
because he felt like he was persecuted.
  • 00:12:48
He felt like things were going awfully.
  • 00:12:50
And you may feel that as well.
  • 00:12:51
    In fact, whole groups,
  • 00:12:53
your whole family might feel that way.
  • 00:12:54
Your whole community might feel that way.
  • 00:12:56
Actually, our whole country might feel that way.
  • 00:12:58
This is a group lament or a group Imprecatory Psalm
  • 00:13:01
where we just say, "God, I am not happy.
  • 00:13:05
    We are not happy."
  • 00:13:07
Now, the irony here is verse nine when it says,
  • 00:13:12
    "Blessed is he,"
  • 00:13:14
we think there's going to be something nice
  • 00:13:15
that Jesus would say, but instead,
  • 00:13:17
"Blessed is he who dashes infants against the rocks."
  • 00:13:22
This isn't a blessing like the Sermon on the Mount is.
  • 00:13:26
    It's a curse. It's not a blessing.
  • 00:13:28
    Here we have the psalmist
  • 00:13:29
actually uttering a form of curse.
  • 00:13:33
Now, this is an example of something in the Bible
  • 00:13:37
that isn't true. [gasps / background music stops]
  • 00:13:41
    This is okay.
  • 00:13:42
This is somethin in the Bible that isn't true.
  • 00:13:44
It is not true that God wants people
  • 00:13:48
to pray for the destruction of innocent life.
  • 00:13:52
It's not true that God likes having babies killed.
  • 00:13:56
The Bible is not endorsing infanticide here. It's not.
  • 00:14:00
What it is endorsing, it's endorsing
  • 00:14:04
being in touch with your emotions
  • 00:14:06
    and taking them before God.
  • 00:14:08
    It is endorsing becoming emotionally
  • 00:14:12
and spiritually healthy by not holding things in.
  • 00:14:15
That's what we're going to spend
  • 00:14:17
the rest of our time talking about.
  • 00:14:20
    - Hey, everyone, I'm Kyle. - And I'm Hannah.
  • 00:14:23
    - We just wanted to say if you're enjoying this episode
  • 00:14:25
and you want to support us,
  • 00:14:26
your giving could go a long way in allowing us
  • 00:14:28
to make more episodes just like this one.
  • 00:14:29
    - That's right.
  • 00:14:30
And you can give super easily right here in our app.
  • 00:14:33
It's as simple as going to your profile page,
  • 00:14:35
clicking the gear in the corner and then clicking give.
  • 00:14:37
    - So easy.
  • 00:14:38
    - Now let's get back to the message.
  • 00:14:48
    - I've got to tell you a story I had just this last week.
  • 00:14:52
I went to the gym where I work out,
  • 00:14:53
and in the one section there is
  • 00:14:55
a bunch of weight benches for people to do flies on
  • 00:14:57
or presses or incline curls or some such things.
  • 00:15:00
About, I don't know, maybe ten of them.
  • 00:15:02
All of them are used by somebody except for one,
  • 00:15:05
and that one has a water bottle
  • 00:15:07
with some keys sitting on it.
  • 00:15:08
It's like someone saving the equipment,
  • 00:15:10
which is really a breach of gym protocol.
  • 00:15:12
You can't save equipment with inanimate objects, right?
  • 00:15:15
So I walk over, I'm looking for whose it might be
  • 00:15:17
just to tell them, like, hey, I'm going to,
  • 00:15:19
you know, just to let them know I'm going to work in.
  • 00:15:21
    I'm looking around,
  • 00:15:22
I don't see anybody looking at me.
  • 00:15:24
So I go, okay, well, let's just move it.
  • 00:15:26
So I take it off and I move it about a foot to the side,
  • 00:15:29
put on the floor nice and carefully,
  • 00:15:30
    keep everything together.
  • 00:15:32
Get down. I start doing my reps.
  • 00:15:34
    I start doing my reps,
  • 00:15:36
just about done with my last one,
  • 00:15:38
guy comes up, big guy says,
  • 00:15:40
"Hey, can I have my bench back?"
  • 00:15:42
    And I'm just about done.
  • 00:15:43
And at that point, the one beside me had opened up.
  • 00:15:45
So I could have said, "Well, just use that one."
  • 00:15:48
But I was like, "Yeah, fine."
  • 00:15:51
So I just went over to the other one
  • 00:15:52
and as I was going over the other one,
  • 00:15:54
    I said, "Hey, hey, man.
  • 00:15:57
It's just it's against gym protocol.
  • 00:15:59
You can't be saving your equipment."
  • 00:16:02
And he goes, "My stuff. I can't --
  • 00:16:04
    I can't save my equipment
  • 00:16:05
when I'm when I'm going to the bathroom?"
  • 00:16:07
I and don't remember exactly what I said,
  • 00:16:10
but I basically said, "No, no, you can't."
  • 00:16:12
And he didn't like hearing that at all.
  • 00:16:13
And things were getting a bit heated.
  • 00:16:15
So I was like, whatever, you know,
  • 00:16:16
the Bible says, blessed are the peacemakers.
  • 00:16:18
So I just try to make some peace and just remove myself.
  • 00:16:21
So I go over to the other gym bench
  • 00:16:23
and and I'm doing my exercise.
  • 00:16:25
I look over, he's doing similar exercises,
  • 00:16:27
except he's using a lot more weight than I am.
  • 00:16:30
He's got more muscle mass than I have.
  • 00:16:33
I probably fueled his adrenaline surge
  • 00:16:36
    to just rep them out.
  • 00:16:38
    And I think he's enjoying
  • 00:16:40
me not being able to lift as much as he has.
  • 00:16:42
So I'm on about rep eight or so
  • 00:16:44
and I sense the spirit of God say to me,
  • 00:16:47
"Brian, go be a peacemaker, just be a peacemaker."
  • 00:16:50
So stop my weights, put them down, cut my set short.
  • 00:16:53
I go over, I stick out my hand.
  • 00:16:55
I said, "Hey, my name is Brian."
  • 00:16:57
He looks at me and he kind of weakly puts his hand out
  • 00:17:00
    and shakes my hand.
  • 00:17:02
And I say, "Hey, man, I really didn't."
  • 00:17:04
I start explaining why I did what I did
  • 00:17:06
    and where it was.
  • 00:17:07
I was trying to be nice
  • 00:17:08
and maybe I didn't say it right or whatever did happen,
  • 00:17:11
but he wasn't having any of it.
  • 00:17:12
He said, "You can't be moving my stuff,
  • 00:17:14
my personal, private property. You can't be."
  • 00:17:16
And I could tell he was still amped up.
  • 00:17:17
And so I was like, okay, okay.
  • 00:17:20
I just just dropped it and went back and doing my thing.
  • 00:17:23
Now, let me tell you the main conclusion I had
  • 00:17:26
    coming out of that story.
  • 00:17:28
People don't know how to use public gym equipment.
  • 00:17:31
That's the main conclusion I have,
  • 00:17:32
though that's true, that's not the main conclusion.
  • 00:17:34
    You know what I had?
  • 00:17:35
That guy had a whole bunch of problems in his life
  • 00:17:40
before someone moved his water bottle and keys.
  • 00:17:43
That guy has had a hard day. He's had a hard week.
  • 00:17:47
Maybe he's had a hard life.
  • 00:17:49
    I don't know what's going on,
  • 00:17:50
but you generally don't get that hyped up over that
  • 00:17:53
    unless something is going wrong.
  • 00:17:54
    Hey, life is hard.
  • 00:17:56
Three big ideas as we come down the final stretch.
  • 00:17:58
    Life is hard.
  • 00:18:02
The nation of Israel is feeling this.
  • 00:18:04
They've been thrown out of their land.
  • 00:18:06
They've been robbed of their culture.
  • 00:18:08
They're having their situation rubbed in their face.
  • 00:18:10
"So sing a songs, Jewish people sing a songs
  • 00:18:14
    that make us party hard."
  • 00:18:15
    It's not good at all.
  • 00:18:18
And I don't know where it is that we started
  • 00:18:22
to think that if I know God, if I know Jesus,
  • 00:18:26
then life isn't going to be hard.
  • 00:18:27
    It's just not true.
  • 00:18:28
There's no verse in the Bible that ever tells you that.
  • 00:18:31
    You can have peace,
  • 00:18:32
you can have joy that transcends all circumstances.
  • 00:18:36
But Jesus said, quote, I quote him exactly:
  • 00:18:39
In this life you will have trouble.
  • 00:18:42
I think we struggle with our faith because
  • 00:18:45
we're under the illusion that if I'm with God,
  • 00:18:49
if I'm in the family business,
  • 00:18:51
there should be some perks that are coming my way.
  • 00:18:56
And when life is hard, then we start doubting our faith
  • 00:18:58
    and getting a bad attitude.
  • 00:18:59
But if we just accept on the front end
  • 00:19:02
that life is hard, it's going to be hard,
  • 00:19:05
It'll help us format and frame things.
  • 00:19:07
The Psalms remind us that of that again and again.
  • 00:19:09
Psalm 137 is an Imprecatory Psalms.
  • 00:19:12
You see, the psalmist is looking around
  • 00:19:14
at a terrain that would look like this,
  • 00:19:16
this is in the Middle East,
  • 00:19:18
you have big rocks all over the place.
  • 00:19:20
And ironically, in the motorcycle world,
  • 00:19:24
    those who ride off road,
  • 00:19:25
rocks that are about this size are referred to
  • 00:19:29
    as baby heads.
  • 00:19:30
    I know it's gross. I know it's awful.
  • 00:19:32
Everyone hates that when they hear it first,
  • 00:19:34
but it's about the size of a baby's head.
  • 00:19:37
And when you drive over it,
  • 00:19:38
it's awful because your tires move around
  • 00:19:41
    and all that stuff.
  • 00:19:43
I don't know if whoever came up with that term
  • 00:19:45
understands Psalm 137, but this is what's taking place.
  • 00:19:50
This, these, this community that's in emotional turmoil
  • 00:19:55
and physical pain, who's being humiliated.
  • 00:19:58
They're just crying out to God and they're saying,
  • 00:20:01
"God, I wish -- I wish you would just
  • 00:20:04
take their infants, dash them on the rocks,
  • 00:20:07
just take them and just, bam, dash them on the rocks."
  • 00:20:09
I was going to maybe get a baby doll to show this,
  • 00:20:12
but it would have been so traumatic
  • 00:20:14
just to see that with a baby doll,
  • 00:20:16
    it would be awful sights.
  • 00:20:17
It's actually even awful to even hear it talked about.
  • 00:20:22
That's why it's easier sometimes in the Bible
  • 00:20:24
just to criticize it and shut it off
  • 00:20:26
than it is to say what is the Bible actually saying
  • 00:20:30
    and wrestle with it.
  • 00:20:31
Let's not run away from this. Let's wrestle with it.
  • 00:20:34
You ever had injustice done to you,
  • 00:20:37
    any form of injustice?
  • 00:20:40
You ever been let go from a job when somebody else
  • 00:20:44
was the one who should have been let go
  • 00:20:46
because you were a higher performer,
  • 00:20:47
maybe they were taking the accolades
  • 00:20:50
that should be coming your way?
  • 00:20:53
You ever been cheated on in a marriage?
  • 00:20:58
    You ever been divorced?
  • 00:20:59
    You have been lied about?
  • 00:21:01
You have been shamed on social media?
  • 00:21:06
Have you ever been abused as a child?
  • 00:21:11
You ever been abused as an adult
  • 00:21:13
by somebody who was physically more strong than you?
  • 00:21:17
Have you ever had somebody lie to you
  • 00:21:19
and cause you to be bankrupt because you trusted them
  • 00:21:22
and now your life is in tatters financially?
  • 00:21:27
Have you ever -- I could go on and on and on.
  • 00:21:30
These are all forms of injustice.
  • 00:21:32
And when you have this happen to you,
  • 00:21:35
    it's appropriate to be angry.
  • 00:21:39
One thing that happened to a staff person
  • 00:21:40
just this past week, I just found out about,
  • 00:21:43
    it's just awful.
  • 00:21:44
An African American person on our staff
  • 00:21:46
and they just were processing said,
  • 00:21:49
"Three times in the last week I was profiled.
  • 00:21:51
    Three times I was profiled."
  • 00:21:53
    What does that mean?
  • 00:21:54
Well, the last time, what it means is
  • 00:21:57
a young white child with his mother
  • 00:21:58
looks at a black man and says, "Oh, no, we have to run."
  • 00:22:04
    Horrible.
  • 00:22:05
Now, how would that make you feel?
  • 00:22:06
I don't know how it would make me feel.
  • 00:22:08
I've never had that happen to me.
  • 00:22:09
    But I'll tell you what,
  • 00:22:11
that happens three times in a week,
  • 00:22:12
that's one week, something's going to rise up in you.
  • 00:22:16
All of us on one level or another have felt
  • 00:22:19
some sort of bad hand that's been dealt us.
  • 00:22:22
And when you feel that, how do you respond?
  • 00:22:26
Do you take it to God?
  • 00:22:28
This guy I talked about in the gym,
  • 00:22:30
I'm confident he was not taking it to God.
  • 00:22:33
I'm confident he wasn't aware of God.
  • 00:22:35
I have great pity for him because
  • 00:22:37
life has been difficult for him
  • 00:22:39
and he doesn't know how to handle it and vents it.
  • 00:22:43
In Psalm 137, we see the psalmist,
  • 00:22:46
the people of God venting to God,
  • 00:22:48
and God doesn't hear these things and say,
  • 00:22:51
"Oh, do you want that done with the infants?
  • 00:22:53
    Oh, okay, I'll consider that."
  • 00:22:54
No, God isn't listening to that and saying,
  • 00:22:56
"Okay, you're praying that I actually
  • 00:22:58
dash infants against rocks. Oh, I consider it."
  • 00:23:00
    No, God isn't into that.
  • 00:23:02
God's never going to do that.
  • 00:23:04
But God is able, that's the second big idea. He's able.
  • 00:23:08
God is able to -- He's able to get you to a new place.
  • 00:23:13
God is able to give you grace.
  • 00:23:16
God is able to give you strength
  • 00:23:18
    that surpasses understanding.
  • 00:23:20
God is able to give you peace to pass understanding.
  • 00:23:22
And God is able to hear you vent.
  • 00:23:27
He's able to take your emotions.
  • 00:23:31
To many of us we think prayer is about
  • 00:23:35
just telling God the things that He wants to hear.
  • 00:23:39
    That's not good communication.
  • 00:23:42
He wants to hear from us.
  • 00:23:43
He needs to hear from us,
  • 00:23:44
    not to educate Him necessarily,
  • 00:23:47
but He needs to hear from us so He knows
  • 00:23:49
that the relationship is healthy and strong.
  • 00:23:51
    When a relationship is there,
  • 00:23:52
there is accurate emoting and venting.
  • 00:23:55
And this is what the nation of Israel is doing.
  • 00:23:58
I've done this a bunch the last two years.
  • 00:23:59
Man, I've had some really tough times.
  • 00:24:02
I'm doing pretty well right now.
  • 00:24:04
    Man, rough, rough times.
  • 00:24:06
People shaming me on social media.
  • 00:24:09
People using their understanding of me as a person
  • 00:24:13
who we've been friends in the past
  • 00:24:14
and cracking on me and trying to
  • 00:24:15
character assassinate me for things that aren't true.
  • 00:24:18
Frustrated about just what it looks like
  • 00:24:21
to be leading a church or leading an organization,
  • 00:24:24
    any organization in this time,
  • 00:24:25
anybody who's in management or leadership
  • 00:24:27
can tell you it's just not fun to lead people right now.
  • 00:24:30
Everybody is sensitive, everybody is on edge,
  • 00:24:32
    everybody is hurting.
  • 00:24:33
Nobody has enough bandwidth to offer grace.
  • 00:24:35
    Every decision seems loaded.
  • 00:24:37
It is frustrating being a part of a thing that
  • 00:24:40
we've grown a lot this last year.
  • 00:24:42
But before that, man, just everyone's leaving,
  • 00:24:45
    everyone's upset, everything's --
  • 00:24:47
    dealing with family tensions.
  • 00:24:49
And I just sit before God sometimes in my prayer time,
  • 00:24:52
I sat before God months ago and God would hear me say,
  • 00:24:57
[grunts] I'm not going to tell you the word right now.
  • 00:24:59
    It starts with an F.
  • 00:25:01
And I would just tell God, [grunts] "God, why?"
  • 00:25:05
I'm not going to repeat all the prayers,
  • 00:25:08
but I'll tell you right now,
  • 00:25:09
God can handle my profanity when I'm talking to Him.
  • 00:25:12
He can. He's heard it before.
  • 00:25:15
I'm not cursing God in that moment.
  • 00:25:18
I'm just letting my emotions out.
  • 00:25:19
"God, why? Why in the world is this so hard?
  • 00:25:23
Why in the world are people the way they are?
  • 00:25:27
When is this going to end?"
  • 00:25:29
I have no answer. Other than like [grunting].
  • 00:25:36
If you've never felt that way,
  • 00:25:38
    then you've simply not lived.
  • 00:25:41
You've not lived in a way that would bring pain to you.
  • 00:25:45
You've not lived in any environment where there's risk
  • 00:25:48
and you're going to find difficulty.
  • 00:25:50
Life is hard, and when it is God's able
  • 00:25:53
and when we talk with God, prayer is a battle.
  • 00:25:58
    It's a battle.
  • 00:25:59
That's the third big idea, and the last big idea for today.
  • 00:26:02
When we talk to God, God doesn't want to hear
  • 00:26:04
these little prayers like, "Oh God,
  • 00:26:07
I thank you for all the little birds up in the sky
  • 00:26:11
and all the precious little children of Scotland."
  • 00:26:15
I don't know why I go to a Scottish accent,
  • 00:26:18
but you know, these correct prayers, they're just nice.
  • 00:26:22
And it's okay to have correct prayers
  • 00:26:23
and feel nice, fine to prayer nice.
  • 00:26:26
But I'll tell you what, when you pray
  • 00:26:27
    you're asking something to change.
  • 00:26:29
    You're getting real before God.
  • 00:26:31
It is a battle, it is a war.
  • 00:26:33
And if your prayers don't interest you,
  • 00:26:36
they're not going to interest God.
  • 00:26:39
How would you feel if someone is just going to
  • 00:26:42
show up in your college classroom and lecture you
  • 00:26:45
by reading their notes, pre-prepared, you know,
  • 00:26:48
this and this, and you go like,
  • 00:26:50
I don't even need to be here.
  • 00:26:51
You just need to talk to me.
  • 00:26:53
    You would feel totally devalued.
  • 00:26:54
How does God feel when all we do
  • 00:26:56
    is we recount pre-rehearsed lines,
  • 00:26:58
    whether they're reading them
  • 00:27:00
or we've had them drilled into our mind.
  • 00:27:02
Where we're saying this thing because
  • 00:27:03
we think that we should say it.
  • 00:27:05
He wants to hear you and we need Him to hear us.
  • 00:27:10
And this is what we learn in Psalm 137:
  • 00:27:16
Blessed are those who are honest with God.
  • 00:27:20
Blessed are those who wear their emotions
  • 00:27:23
on their sleeves in their time with God.
  • 00:27:25
Maybe if we did that more with God,
  • 00:27:28
we'd be wearing our emotions on our sleeves
  • 00:27:30
less with the innocent person next to us
  • 00:27:33
who just moved a water bottle.
  • 00:27:35
Maybe if we learn how to do this with God,
  • 00:27:37
    we'd have less road rage.
  • 00:27:39
Maybe we'd have less fighting on social media.
  • 00:27:41
Maybe we all get a little more happy and joyful.
  • 00:27:47
This is why Psalm 137 exists.
  • 00:27:50
This is because it's the life that God wants you to have,
  • 00:27:53
a life where in the difficulty, life is hard.
  • 00:27:56
And I recognize that God's able
  • 00:27:58
    and this is a battle
  • 00:28:00
and I'm going to pray and work through it.
  • 00:28:02
You do that and you will find a peace
  • 00:28:05
    that passes all understanding.
  • 00:28:08
This message may hit a bit close to home for you.
  • 00:28:12
    I hope it's helping you,
  • 00:28:13
but I also want to pray for you right now.
  • 00:28:15
    So let me pray.
  • 00:28:16
God, there's so much difficulty right now.
  • 00:28:18
    I know there is.
  • 00:28:19
It's almost like I can feel it
  • 00:28:21
    coming through the camera.
  • 00:28:22
These pains and these difficulties are real.
  • 00:28:24
They're not imagined. It's how we feel.
  • 00:28:26
And God, we're not just asking that they would end.
  • 00:28:30
We do ask that they end.
  • 00:28:31
    We ask them injustice ends.
  • 00:28:33
We ask that evil that other people does to us,
  • 00:28:36
that other people put on us, we ask that that ends.
  • 00:28:39
But we also ask that ends.
  • 00:28:40
We ask that our feelings of just being crappy,
  • 00:28:45
that that ends, God, wipe them out.
  • 00:28:48
We want to tell you right now how we feel.
  • 00:28:50
We're telling you how we feel
  • 00:28:51
and we're wanting it to go away.
  • 00:28:53
We don't want to keep feeling this way.
  • 00:28:56
I pray that your peace would come and sweep over us
  • 00:29:00
and we would experience You as the Way Maker
  • 00:29:04
that Your Word says that You are.
  • 00:29:06
    I pray these things
  • 00:29:08
according to the character identity of Jesus. Amen.
  • 00:31:33
