Yes, those answers, and mine,

they're rooted deeply in the Bible, and incredibly,

they point to maybe the greatest potential

for the spread of the gospel

in the history of the church.

Yes, that's what I said,

and today's about where we're going.

It's about a new kind of church that we're building

to reach new people in new places

better than ever before.

And it's also about confronting the brutal facts

that what has worked isn't working

the same way for everyone anymore.

So where are we going?

Ok, but what is that adventure?

Well, it's not settling for normal.

It's not minding your own business.

It's not working hard for 40 years so you can

slowly turn into a raisin on the beach.

It sure as crap is not just watching church

week after week after week.

Now, watching every week is important,

and I hope it's actually helpful.

But this is not the adventure,

00:02:21

it's just the equipping for the adventure.

00:02:23

The adventure is fighting against apathy and hunger,

00:02:26

against pain and depression, hopelessness,

00:02:28

and everything that was the blind eyes and shut ears

00:02:31

to the lifesaving message of Jesus.

00:02:34

And the adventure is fighting for love,

00:02:36

for hope, for redemption for everyone

00:02:40

who feels overlooked, overwhelmed, or just underwater,

00:02:43

struggling to stay above the waves.

00:02:45

That's the adventure that God made you for.

00:02:50

And that's the church.

00:02:51

See, as the church we are God's plan A

00:02:54

for deploying His redemption and His love

00:02:56

to a dying, hurting world who desperately needs it.

And here's the thing, there is no Plan B, none.

Ephesians 1 talks about the church and it describes it

00:03:07

as the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

00:03:13

What does that mean?

Well, the church is the fullness of God

00:03:16

means that the church is the answer for emptiness.

00:03:20

But here's the brutal facts.

00:03:22

The old methods, they aren't working anymore.

00:03:25

The water spigot meant to fill up empty people

00:03:28

is just pouring onto the ground.

00:03:30

Why?

00:03:32

It's because the world has changed dramatically.

00:03:34

The Industrial Revolution, way back in the day,

00:03:37

it moved people from the country to the city.

00:03:39

But the technological revolution, I think,

00:03:41

has moved us way farther.

00:03:43

It's moved us from living in person to living online.

00:03:46

It's a place that didn't even exist 25 years ago.

00:03:49

And here's the thing, if the church,

00:03:51

which is God's plan A for redemption, remember,

00:03:54

doesn't adopt new methods, we will fail at our mission.

00:03:59

So I believe God's calling us

00:04:00

to create a new kind of church,

00:04:02

to reach a new kind of world.

00:04:05

That's what we're building.

00:04:06

Everything you see from Crossroads online is driven

by a vision to create a world changing movement

Because showing a person on a stage

in a building someone can't get to

in a version of church that they don't want,

speaking to an audience who isn't them,

maybe isn't the best way to reach them.

And I might sound overly dramatic

or maybe even against the teachings of Jesus,

but hang with me for a minute

and I want to break it down.

First, let's get crystal clear

about the mission of Jesus.

00:04:46

Here's His mission in His words: Luke 19:10:

Jesus was so focused on this that one time

00:04:57

He even said he'd deprioritize the 99 found sheep

00:05:02

by leaving them to go after the one lost sheep.

00:05:06

Seek and save the lost, that's His mission.

00:05:08

So what's our job? It's the same.

00:05:12

Priority number one for the church is

00:05:14

go seek and save the lost.

00:05:17

And if you ever read the gospels you've heard Jesus say,

00:05:19

go, go, go again and again and again.

00:05:22

In fact, the last thing He ever said

00:05:23

was what's known as the great commission in Matthew 28.

00:05:25

He said:

00:05:31

Well, how? How do you go?

00:05:33

Well, it's fairly simple.

00:05:36

Step one, you go to where the lost people are,

00:05:40

two, you learn their language,

00:05:42

three, you translate Jesus into that language.

00:05:47

This is how Paul, who wrote most of the New Testament

00:05:50

of the Bible and I believe was one of

00:05:51

the most effective evangelists ever described it.

00:05:54

This is 1 Corinthians 9:20-22, Paul said:

Now, if you apply that to today,

00:06:16

you get to a 21st century American,

00:06:19

be a 21st century American,

00:06:21

to win 21st century Americans.

00:06:23

And here's the thing, the average 21st century American

00:06:27

lives the majority of our life online.

00:06:30

It's where we go to find the answers

00:06:32

to everything we're looking for, right?

00:06:33

If you want to know how to plumb a sink,

00:06:35

you look online.

00:06:37

If you wanted to find a date for tonight,

00:06:38

you would look online.

00:06:40

If you wanted to find a solution

00:06:41

to the emptiness that you feel inside.

00:06:42

Guess what? You look online.

00:06:45

Now, you might be like, "Hold on, Kyle.

00:06:48

You are sounding really, really progressive right now.

00:06:52

It's making me uncomfortable.

00:06:53

I mean, the foundations of the faith

00:06:55

are these ancient, unchangeable truths.

00:06:57

Are you trying to change those?"

00:07:00

No, not at all.

00:07:02

Jeremiah 6:16 says this:

This is what the Lord says:

00:07:17

The ancient paths shouldn't be touched.

00:07:20

They're the paths of forgiveness, of community,

00:07:23

of service, of love that never fails.

00:07:28

They're where I've actually found life,

00:07:30

where I've personally found hope.

00:07:33

And these paths are unchangeable.

00:07:37

But God also says this, Isaiah 43:18-19:

The history of the spread of the gospel

00:07:59

is that new trails must be blazed in order

00:08:03

to tell new people about the ancient paths of God

00:08:07

that lead to life.

00:08:09

And the unfortunate history of the old church,

00:08:12

it's actually the harshest critic of the new one,

00:08:15

every time.

00:08:16

If you rewind the clock 2000 years

00:08:18

when Paul adopted new methods and took new roads

00:08:21

to reach the Greco Roman world,

00:08:23

his harshest critic was Peter,

00:08:26

one of the disciples of Jesus,

00:08:28

and the existing established church back in Jerusalem.

00:08:31

It's been that way ever since.

00:08:33

There's a story I love about a missionary

00:08:34

named Hudson Taylor back in the 1800s,

00:08:36

one of the first missionaries ever.

00:08:38

This guy went into China

00:08:39

before anybody was allowed in there.

00:08:41

And get this, a 125,000 people

00:08:45

were saved because of his work.

00:08:46

How did he do it?

00:08:47

By becoming to the Chinese a Chinese man.

00:08:51

For him, that meant he had to grow out his ponytail,

00:08:53

which back at that time men did not do.

00:08:57

He was from England.

00:08:58

And see, when he went home to England,

00:08:59

rather than be celebrated, he was mocked,

00:09:02

he was ridiculed.

00:09:03

He was he was told, "You can't do that.

00:09:05

You can't grow your hair out.

00:09:06

That's not how men look."

00:09:08

Please hear me for a minute.

This isn't about me, but this is deeply personal to me.

And now is maybe the right time to explain

00:09:17

why I'm here, why I'm in this role

00:09:19

leading online church, pursuing this goal

00:09:22

of building a new kind of church that reaches new people

00:09:25

who otherwise wouldn't be reached.

00:09:27

It's because 16 years ago,

00:09:29

I had a different plan for my life.

00:09:31

The basic headline of that plan was

00:09:33

go make a lot of money.

00:09:35

And then God said something to me very clearly.

00:09:39

He said, "Go, evangelize my new church."

00:09:43

Now, I honestly had no idea what that meant,

00:09:45

but I knew about this place called Crossroads.

00:09:47

I knew about a church that was doing things

00:09:49

in a new, completely different way

00:09:50

than I'd ever seen before and so I went after it.

00:09:53

I came on staff of this church 16 years ago.

00:09:56

And now I find myself in a place,

00:09:58

going the new kind of church in the new church

00:10:02

is this new thing called online.

00:10:05

You know when I got to Crossroads,

00:10:06

I'd never seen anything like it before.

00:10:08

I had spent five years in the Bible Belt

00:10:10

surrounded by great churches,

00:10:12

but none of them spoke my language.

00:10:14

I actually told this to Brian, our senior pastor, just today.

00:10:17

I said, "You know, the first time I ever saw Crossroads,

00:10:21

two things stood out to me.

00:10:22

One, Crossroads spoke my language,

00:10:25

two, Crossroads was willing to do whatever it took

00:10:29

to capture my imagination and tell me about Jesus."

It's incredible.

00:10:34

It's the first time I've ever seen a church

00:10:36

focused on relationships instead of empty religious rules.

00:10:38

It was the first time I've ever seen a church

00:10:40

who was taking responsibility

00:10:41

to solve the world's largest issues instead of

00:10:43

just being an insular Sunday morning only Holy huddle.

00:10:47

See, now, I believe that call that God gave me

00:10:50

to evangelize the new kind of church

00:10:53

is to evangelize a church online.

00:10:55

By the way, evangelize means "share the good news about."

00:10:59

And I would would be explicit. the new thing

00:11:02

that God is doing is good news.

00:11:06

If you read headlines about churches,

00:11:07

you may have seen things about declining attendance

00:11:09

and how even prior to the pandemic church goers

00:11:12

were only going 1.7 times per month to church.

00:11:15

And it's even less now.

00:11:16

And you might be like, "Oh, no, what's happening?

00:11:18

Is the church dying? What's happening?"

00:11:20

No, God's doing a new thing. Do you not perceive it?

00:11:25

See, I believe that the technological revolution

00:11:28

that's driving so much change in our lives

00:11:30

represents the greatest opportunity

00:11:33

in the history of the church to not only reach

00:11:35

the world with the message of Jesus,

00:11:37

but to connect all of us together into

00:11:40

a world changing force, more powerful and more united

00:11:44

than any previous version of the church.

00:11:47

How? By following Jesus

00:11:50

and being a radically more personal

00:11:53

than any previous version of the church.

00:11:55

You know, Jesus was radically personal.

00:11:58

I don't know if you knew this, but He actually

00:12:00

has 198 different names in the Bible.

00:12:03

Now get this, when He walked up to somebody,

00:12:05

He chose a very particular, very personal name

00:12:09

for each of them.

00:12:11

One time He went to a well and there was

00:12:13

a woman there who was looking for a drink.

00:12:15

And He said to her, "I am living water."

00:12:19

Another time he was talking to a crowd

00:12:21

and they were actually following Him

00:12:23

across the mountains, like chasing Him.

00:12:25

They were hungry. They were looking for food.

00:12:27

And to them He turned around and He said,

00:12:29

"You know who I am? I'm the bread of life."

00:12:32

Another time there's a lonely guy sitting in a tree,

00:12:34

had no friends, nobody liked him.

00:12:35

He was just taking all their money, exploiting them,

00:12:37

and so they just had made him into an outcast.

00:12:40

No friends.

00:12:41

Jesus walks up and He says, "Zacchaeus,

00:12:44

tonight I'm coming to your house for dinner

00:12:47

and a great hang."

00:12:48

To the man with no friends He became a friend.

00:12:51

Another time there's a blind man.

00:12:53

He lived his whole life in darkness.

00:12:55

And when Jesus walked up to him, He said,

00:12:57

"I'm the light to see."

00:13:00

This is a story of their encounter in Luke 18.

This is one of the most radical features of Jesus

00:13:32

and the one that most Christians miss.

00:13:34

Jesus walks up to you right now in your moment

00:13:38

in your life and He asks you the same question:

00:13:42

What do you want Me to do for you?

00:13:44

See, Jesus wants to meet your needs personally.

00:13:48

He wants to meet your moment, whatever it is right now.

00:13:53

You never see Jesus offer bread to a blind man.

00:13:57

You never see Him give sight to somebody

00:13:58

who's actually just looking for water.

00:14:01

You know, in light of that, the harshest lob throw

00:14:04

at online church by Christians

00:14:07

is that technology is just not personal.

00:14:11

But here's the thing, the case I make,

00:14:13

technology actually gives us the ability

00:14:15

to be more personal

00:14:16

and to approach each individual person

00:14:18

the way that Jesus did, to see their need

00:14:21

and to meet it personally and uniquely.

00:14:24

I recently got to hear from a guy named Frank Blake.

00:14:27

He was the CEO of Home Depot.

00:14:29

He's an amazing Christian man.

00:14:30

He talked about his experience of building HomeDepot.com

00:14:34

and how it transformed their entire business.

00:14:37

He said prior to going online,

00:14:39

their main form of talking to people

00:14:41

was through Sunday newspaper inserts.

00:14:43

It's like this little section that came in the middle,

00:14:46

an advertisement just like this.

00:14:47

You can get a 2013 Nissan Murano, by the way,

00:14:50

for $8900, if you're interested.

00:14:53

But the problem with this is that you actually

00:14:56

have to say the same thing to everyone.

00:14:58

And so for Home Depot, they might advertise

00:15:01

on a given Sunday faucet's on sale. Wow.

00:15:04

And to every single person from Minneapolis

00:15:07

to New York City to Miami, they'd say the same thing.

00:15:10

Do you want a faucet? They're on sale this week.

00:15:14

The entire time, by the way, they knew, of course,

00:15:16

that not everybody needed a faucet.

00:15:18

Some people actually needed help with a chainsaw.

00:15:21

Other people needed help with electric.

00:15:23

The problem is you can't ask each person in America

00:15:26

what they need help with that week

00:15:28

and design a custom flyer just for them.

00:15:31

But he had this epiphany, you could do that online.

00:15:35

And that insight completely changed

00:15:38

his view of technology.

00:15:39

He built an online presence designed to helping

each person find the most helpful solution

to the problem they were trying to solve in their moment.

He wanted to meet their moment,

just like Jesus meets ours.

The same is true of us.

it might not meet the need of your moment

or your friend's moment who lives in another state.

Because the church was just not really comfortable

with the new neighborhood.

I'll tell you what happens, it'd be a tragedy,

an entire lost generation.

You know someday, past the end of our lives,

Jesus will stand face to face with us, with you, with me.

He's going to ask us each a very simple question:

Did you go?

And in that moment, which will come, I know it'll come,

I don't want to say, "No. You see, Jesus,

I know that everybody moved online

00:20:16

and all the lone sheep, all the ones, they went there.

But see that new neighborhood,

00:20:21

it was just kind of strange.

00:20:23

It was kind of uncomfortable.

00:20:25

And there were just too many unknowns there.

00:20:27

And so I stayed while the world packed up

00:20:30

and moved on from this place.

00:20:31

But, look, I preserved this old symbol for You.

Do you like it?"

No. I want to say to Jesus, "When You said go I went.

It was uncomfortable. It was difficult.

Jesus, I'll be honest, there were times

00:20:45

I had no idea what to do, but I went."

I believe we're standing at the precipice

of one of the greatest movements

00:20:54

of God in human history.

A time when Jesus is calling His church

to follow Him and go to new places

00:21:03

and learn new languages to reach new people.

And if we have the courage, the audacity even

00:21:10

to go, to follow, we'll see a generation won, not lost.

People who never thought they could belong, belonging.

00:21:17

People who never thought they could be healed, healed.

00:21:20

And I believe we can see a revival that

they will write about in the history books

00:21:23

in a chapter called When the Church

break through the clutter and the chaos

and all the crazy news feeds and all that stuff,

He is the God of the breakthrough.
