Saul’s story comes to an end on the battlefield. The king who spent years trying to hold onto his throne is gone, along with his sons. David’s path to becoming king is finally opening, but not because David forced it open. Saul’s story is a reminder that we can spend enormous amounts of energy trying to control an outcome that was never ours to control. God’s purposes don’t depend on our ability to manipulate circumstances, protect our position, or make everything happen on our timeline.

Ecclesiastes begins with a question many of us eventually ask: What is all of this for? We work, build, learn, grow older, and eventually disappear, while the world keeps moving without us. The Teacher looks honestly at the repetition of life and refuses to offer an easy answer. That honesty is part of what makes Ecclesiastes so powerful. Faith doesn't require us to pretend that life always makes sense. Sometimes the search for meaning begins by admitting that the things we thought would satisfy us don't.

David returns to Ziklag and finds everything gone. The city has been burned, their families have been taken captive, and even David’s own men are talking about stoning him. There is nowhere left for him to turn. But in that moment, David strengthens himself in the LORD. He doesn’t pretend the loss isn’t real. He brings his fear and grief to God, asks for direction, and then moves forward in obedience. Sometimes faithfulness begins by remembering where our strength actually comes from.
