Saul is out looking for lost donkeys when Samuel finds him. Not exactly a heroic origin story. His tribe is the smallest. He doesn't see himself as someone worth choosing. And yet God has already been steering the ship, positioning Saul before Saul even knew there was a ship to steer. This episode is about what it looks like to prepare in expectancy, getting things ready so that when God moves, you're already in motion.

The ark comes back and Israel celebrates — until some treat God’s presence like it’s ordinary. Like it’s theirs to handle however they want. The consequences are severe. God is near. He is also holy. Next morning — face down again, this time in pieces. God doesn’t need favorable circumstances to be God. He doesn’t need Israel to win the battle. He doesn’t need to be on the winning side. He just is who he is — even in enemy territory. This episode is about what it looks like to trust that when everything around you says otherwise.

What Looked Like a Loss | 1 Samuel 5 

Israel is losing and they bring the ark into battle like a good luck charm. A formula. A way to get God to do what they want without actually trusting who he is. It doesn’t work. The ark is captured.
