He literally made them up to help us understand truth.

so I'm gonna say some parables.

I'm going to talk about clothes, rich people and fools.

- And now presenting the parables.

I said parables, not pair of bulls.

The rich fool.

Jesus warned the crowd against greed

and made up a story about a rich man

and the giant crop he yielded

00:01:19

and how he stored his treasures on earth.

Today, we're going to look at how Jesus

wants to put our faith and treasures in heaven.

so that they optimize the most space.

I'm learning how to make the most perfect vegetable wash

that gets rid of all the toxins and everything.

Word to the wise, it's baking soda.

Anyway, today I'm going to give you a life hack,

00:02:06

one that I hope changes the way you approach

00:02:09

everything in your life.

00:02:11

And I hope it changes your heart.

00:02:14

And when you do this life hack,

00:02:17

I think you'll notice immediate reward.

Today we're talking about parables

00:02:22

and we're specifically looking in the Book of Luke,

00:02:25

and we're learning how Jesus will use

00:02:27

these made up stories to tell us a truth

00:02:30

about ourselves and about Him.

00:02:33

In particular, He tells a parable

00:02:36

that I'm going to tell you actually right now,

00:02:38

a story about the rich fool.

00:02:40

And I think that it has some truth for our lives.

00:02:42

And I'm going to tell you what it means.

00:02:44

Now my cool Bible calls it the rich fool.

00:02:47

Jesus actually wouldn't have called it that.

00:02:49

He would have just launched into the story

00:02:51

and told it wonderfully.

00:02:52

And he did a great job, by the way, in Luke 12,

00:02:54

but I'm going to give you a summarized version.

00:02:56

It's going to be a little bit different.

00:02:58

Here it goes.

00:02:59

So there is a man and this man,

00:03:00

he has this awesome barn and more than an awesome barn,

00:03:03

he has this awesome farm.

00:03:05

Let's call him Joe because we need a name in our story.

00:03:08

And so Joe is working in his field or whatever.

00:03:11

And this particular year there is just a wonderful crop.

00:03:15

No matter what he did, I don't know,

00:03:17

maybe he has some awesome fertilizer,

00:03:18

but the crop is just amazing.

00:03:20

So he's got grain out the wazoo and vegetables

00:03:23

and maybe fruit even.

00:03:25

He just got a ton of stuff that he's working with

00:03:27

and he's looking at it.

00:03:29

He's going, "Huh, I got a lot of food this year.

00:03:32

That's incredible."

00:03:33

But then he looks over at his barn

00:03:35

and he's like, "Dang."

00:03:37

Can I say, dang? I don't know.

00:03:38

"But dang, that's not enough space.

00:03:42

I need a new plan."

00:03:43

So he comes up with this new plan.

00:03:44

He says, "I know what I'll do.

00:03:46

I'll build a bigger barn. This barn is going to be better.

00:03:48

This barn is going to have more shelves.

00:03:50

This barn is going to have better insulation,

00:03:52

more space.

00:03:53

And that is what I'm going to do

00:03:54

with all of this wonderful crop that I've made.

00:03:56

I'm going to put it in that barn."

00:03:58

And he says this to himself, not just because

00:04:01

he wants to store it up and be kind and awesome

00:04:03

and help his neighbors.

00:04:04

No, no, no, he says, "Actually, I'm going to do that

00:04:07

so that at the end of my life,

00:04:09

I don't have to worry about anything.

00:04:11

I'm just going to eat, drink, and be merry."

00:04:14

And then the story shifts.

00:04:15

Something crazy actually happens: God speaks.

00:04:18

He doesn't always speak in all the stories,

00:04:20

but He speaks in this story.

00:04:21

And He's like, "Joe, you fool, this very night,

00:04:26

your life is going to be demanded of you,"

00:04:28

which means you're going to die.

00:04:30

And then He says, "Who will they get

00:04:32

what you have prepared for yourself?"

00:04:34

He's saying, "What about the barn, dang?"

00:04:40

So let me update the story for you.

00:04:48

- There are bad ways to wake up [flute note]

and there are great ways to wake up.

00:05:11

- So here's the update, because many of us

don't actually have grain and barns and ground

00:05:41

and cool things like that.

But you know what we all do have? Stuff.

00:05:47

Even if we consider ourselves minimalists,

00:05:50

we all have stuff.

00:05:52

And see stuff in our lives is the same

00:05:55

as the grain and the story.

00:05:57

And stuff is whatever we're holding on to too tightly.

00:06:02

Many of us, especially if we live in America,

00:06:04

have stuff in abundance. We have a ton of it.

00:06:07

And for each of us, it looks different.

00:06:10

It can be things, it can be money, it can be power.

00:06:13

It can be emotional capital. It can be control.

00:06:16

It can be our idea of success.

00:06:18

Stuff really can be anything.

00:06:20

One example of something that I hold on real tight to

00:06:23

in my life, my stuff, it's my clothes.

00:06:27

Look at them and they just keep coming.

00:06:31

Don't you love these shoes?

00:06:33

Somehow there's not enough space for any of it.

00:06:37

And so, just like Joe in the story,

00:06:40

I want to build a bigger closet.

00:06:43

That sounds like a good idea.

00:06:44

Listen, but I told you that parable,

00:06:47

and now you're thinking, "Are our big barns bad?

00:06:50

Are large, dreamy walk in closets, are they bad

00:06:54

and for foolish people?

00:06:56

It's quite the contrary.

00:06:57

See, having a big closet and building bigger barns

00:07:01

are only bad when our hearts are not right,

00:07:04

when our intentions are clouded with selfish gain.

00:07:09

So let's read a passage of Scripture that happened

right before Jesus told the parable.

00:07:14

In Luke 12:13, it says:

00:07:16

Someone in the crowd said to Him, "Teacher,

00:07:20

tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."

00:07:23

Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge

00:07:28

or an arbiter between you?"

00:07:30

Then He said to them, "Watch out!

00:07:32

Be on your guard against all kinds of greed;

00:07:36

life does not consist in an abundance of possessions."

00:07:41

Okay. Hold on a second. What just happened?

00:07:44

Well, Jesus had just got finished talking

00:07:47

about how followers of Jesus behave,

00:07:49

and he was hitting on a number of,

00:07:51

like, home runs, hot topics.

00:07:53

He was talking about how followers of Jesus,

00:07:55

they don't fear, they're faithful.

00:07:57

He talks about how followers of Jesus

00:07:58

more than anything, they know that they are cared for

00:08:02

by God and they act like it.

00:08:05

See, they live knowing that God cares so much

00:08:09

that He provides for them mentally, emotionally,

00:08:12

spiritually, clothing-ly, and yes, even financially.

00:08:18

See, right after Jesus says this, there's this guy,

00:08:21

we're going to call him Jack.

00:08:23

Jack says, "Yo, yo, yo, yo, yo. What about me?

00:08:26

Can't you make my brother give me some more money?

00:08:29

Can't you settle the matter of my inheritance?"

00:08:33

Okay, just a second,

00:08:34

let me help you wrap your head around this.

00:08:36

This makes no sense.

00:08:39

Jesus was just talking about

00:08:41

a whole bunch of other stuff.

00:08:44

And this guy, Jack, is, like, way in the back, like,

00:08:47

"Yo, yo, hey, pick me. I want to talk."

00:08:50

He interrupts Him. This is crazy.

00:08:54

Jesus is giving an amazing teaching

00:08:56

and people from all around have gathered,

00:08:58

there's standing room only.

00:09:00

And let me just set the scene for you.

00:09:02

He's talking some really good stuff.

00:09:05

This is the equivalent of someone coming up

00:09:08

and interrupting the keynote speaker

00:09:10

at the White House or interrupting the Oscars.

00:09:14

Honestly, it's too soon. That was low.

00:09:16

They're calling that Palm Sunday now,

00:09:18

you know what I mean?

00:09:19

Anyway, Jack had no reason to be yelling this out.

00:09:24

In fact, he had no right.

00:09:26

But more importantly than just messing up

00:09:29

social protocol, Jack's heart, it's off.

00:09:33

It was normal for rabbis to settle disputes,

00:09:36

to judge fairly, especially with matters of inheritance.

00:09:40

But what's not normal was for Jack to be asking

00:09:44

what he was asking for when he was asking for it,

00:09:47

and Jesus knows it.

00:09:50

Jack wanted Jesus to settle the matter in a way

00:09:53

that cheated his brother and rewarded him.

00:09:56

Jack's heart was off.

00:09:58

His heart was to have more and more stuff for himself.

00:10:02

He's looking for a way to gain here,

00:10:04

and Jesus stops in His tracks to address him.

00:10:08

And He teaches us a valuable lesson.

00:10:10

He teaches us this parable about Joe.

00:10:12

He tells us about Joe and his barn.

00:10:14

And you know what?

00:10:15

That moment is not entirely about money.

00:10:18

It's not entirely about me getting more clothes.

00:10:20

It's not entirely about greed.

00:10:22

Jesus is teaching this parable to show his audience

00:10:25

how to do a life hack.

00:10:27

He's showing them how to do a heart check.

00:10:32

See a heart check is just doing a double take

00:10:34

at your actions and your thoughts

00:10:35

and filtering them through the Word

00:10:37

and the heart of God.

00:10:40

And there's a simple way to do this,

00:10:42

is making sure that you're rich towards God.

00:10:46

Maybe you've never heard it said that way.

00:10:48

And I'm going to tell you what it means

00:10:49

here in just a second.

00:10:50

But you see the man in the parable,

00:10:52

he starts out as a rich man,

00:10:54

but he ends the story as a rich fool.

00:10:58

Why? Does Jesus hate rich people?

00:11:02

No. Jesus is not calling all rich people fools.

00:11:06

He actually loves rich people, but He is giving us

00:11:09

a clear definition of a fool.

00:11:11

He's saying it's the one who's not rich towards God.

00:11:14

Let me read it for you. He says:

00:11:16

But God said to him, "You fool!

00:11:19

This very night your life will be demanded from you.

00:11:23

Then who will get what you've prepared for yourself?"

00:11:27

This is how it will be with whoever stores up things

00:11:31

for himself but is not rich towards God.

00:11:35

But what does it even mean?

00:11:37

Jesus is saying this is exactly how you're going to be,

00:11:39

you're Joe in the story

00:11:41

if you store up clothes in your closet for yourself.

00:11:45

But let me tell you, being rich towards God

00:11:47

is a little bit simpler than we think.

00:11:49

Maybe you've even heard it before because

00:11:51

it's recorded quite a bit in the Bible

00:11:53

and it's also here in Luke. It says:

00:11:56

Love the Lord your God with all your heart

00:11:59

and with all your soul and with all your strength

00:12:01

and with all your mind.

00:12:03

[Love your neighbor as yourself.]

00:12:05

Do this and you will live.

00:12:10

See, when you're rich towards God,

00:12:12

you love Him more than anything.

00:12:16

And what He wants is more important to you

00:12:18

than maybe even what you want.

00:12:20

And then you love others as yourself.

00:12:23

Not almost as yourself, but as yourself.

00:12:26

So if you buy the best clothes for you,

00:12:28

you would buy the best clothes for someone else.

00:12:30

See, doing this causes you to live a capital I life.

00:12:34

I'm not just even talking about the abundant life

00:12:38

that Jesus does have for us on Earth.

00:12:40

But I'm also talking about

00:12:43

this is the way that leads to eternal life.

00:12:46

And that's what the fool was missing.

00:12:48

See, he lacked the ability to do a heart check.

00:12:51

He couldn't make himself think about

00:12:53

what God might want him to do with the grain,

00:12:55

or how he might use it to help others.

00:12:57

He only thought about himself

00:12:59

and making himself more comfortable.

00:13:03

See, your life, my life. our life

00:13:06

is not our possessions.

00:13:08

Nothing you own can be taken out of this world.

00:13:11

See, there's no amount of preservation

00:13:13

that can make you richer towards God.

00:13:17

There is no amount of stuff

00:13:19

that can make you rich towards God.

00:15:28

God wants your heart more

00:15:30

than He wants you to have stuff.

00:15:32

And it's important to do a heart check

00:15:34

every now and again to make sure

00:15:35

that you're in line with God.

00:15:38

The real, the good, the full life

00:15:40

is not attached to a U-Haul full of stuff.

00:15:44

Denzel Washington said it best.

00:15:46

He said, "You'll never see a U-Haul

00:15:48

attached to a hearse."

00:15:50

Nothing that we have can we take out of here with us.

00:15:53

Because real life, see, it's attached

00:15:55

to the richness in God, not stuff.

00:15:58

And we get richer when we know how to check our heart.

00:16:02

Jesus told the story of the rich fool

00:16:05

because He was actually inviting Jack,

00:16:07

remember that guy in the back, Jack.

00:16:09

He was inviting him into a heart check.

00:16:12

He was warning him.

00:16:13

He saw through his fake request for arbitration

00:16:16

and He's warning, "Hey, hey, bro,

00:16:18

don't get hung up on the small stuff.

00:16:21

Don't get hung up on the stuff that seemed so big

00:16:23

and most important down here because is actually not."

00:16:26

Instead, He's saying, "Be on your guard,

00:16:29

look out for your heart, because if you don't,

00:16:32

you'll think you can take a U-Haul out of here,

00:16:35

and you can't."

00:16:36

So why did Jesus give him a heart check

00:16:40

and not just give him what he wanted,

00:16:41

which was the inheritance money?

00:16:44

Because Jesus was doing something only He can do.

00:16:48

He was looking at the heart.

00:16:50

He was observing Jack's intent and his actions.

00:16:53

He was actually giving him something way better

00:16:56

than inheritance money.

00:16:57

Jesus was giving him a life hack

00:17:00

that would lead to way more life

00:17:02

and not more possessions.

00:17:04

And you know what?

00:17:05

He offers the same thing to us.

00:17:07

Jack was longing for more stuff,

00:17:10

longing for more closet space,

00:17:12

bigger barns, more money.

00:17:13

And the only thing that we should actually

00:17:15

be longing for is eternal life.

00:17:19

And here's how we know when we need a heart check.

00:17:22

Stop for a second. Are you breathing?

00:17:24

Are you still consuming oxygen?

00:17:25

Well, yeah, that's you, then you need a heart check.

00:17:28

I need a heart check.

00:17:29

And we need it because our natural desire

00:17:31

is to be like Jack.

00:17:33

That's who I see myself as in the story.

00:17:35

Our natural desire is to have more stuff.

00:17:39

Our default is to secure our earthly safety

00:17:42

and well-being, our comfort.

00:17:44

We want to make sure we have a comfortable life.

00:17:46

And yes, yes, Jesus wants us to have nice things.

00:17:49

He absolutely does.

00:17:50

But what He wants most is to know that

00:17:53

our heart is set on eternity with Him,

00:17:56

not simply on amassing more things

00:17:58

and building bigger closets and barns.

00:18:01

That doesn't mean that I need to just rid myself

00:18:04

of all of my clothes and for the rest of my life

00:18:06

have one outfit.

00:18:07

No, that's not what that means.

00:18:09

But it likely does mean that I need to do

00:18:11

a quick heart check, the fact that I have stuff.

00:18:13

It means I need to do a quick heart check.

00:18:16

And the fastest way to do that is to ask why.

00:18:20

Why do I want more things for my closet?

00:18:23

Is it because I want to look the best

00:18:24

and I want to find my self-worth

00:18:26

in the latest things that I own?

00:18:28

Is it because I want to have all of the best clothes

00:18:31

that nobody can talk ill of me or say anything bad

00:18:34

and only speak good things?

00:18:36

Is that why?

00:18:37

See asking why can start to help us filter

00:18:40

our thoughts and actions through the Word

00:18:42

and character of God.

00:18:44

For me, heart checks are the life hack

00:18:47

that have helped me decide between promotions

00:18:49

and new jobs, between cars,

00:18:52

and even between retirement plans and generosity.

00:18:56

Jesus said to be on your guard,

00:18:59

and this is how we do it.

00:19:01

We ask ourselves why.

00:19:04

We filter our intentions through Luke 10:27

00:19:08

and we ask ourselves:

00:19:09

Is this making me love the Lord God more,

00:19:12

with all of my heart,

00:19:13

all of my mind, all of my soul?

00:19:14

Is it making me love my neighbor?

00:19:17

See, where do you need to start implementing

00:19:20

a heart check? What about you?

00:19:23

Are your intentions wrong towards your family?

00:19:26

Is your heart hardened against your neighbor

00:19:28

making it really hard for you to serve them?

00:19:31

Are you only doing things that bring you success

00:19:33

and build your self-worth?

00:19:35

Are you just storing up stuff

00:19:38

so that you can be like the rich fool

00:19:39

and have a good, what you consider comfortable life?

00:19:43

Are you living with eternity in your heart?

00:19:48

Before I go any further, I want to tell you

00:19:50

the beautiful thing about this whole heart check thing,

00:19:53

it's between you and Jesus, nobody else.

00:19:56

A one to one thing.

00:19:57

See, no one else can judge the intentions

00:20:00

of your heart except Jesus.

00:20:02

Just like no one could judge the intentions of Jack.

00:20:05

No one saw through

00:20:07

his misnomered request for more money.

00:20:09

He really had a heart of greed.

00:20:12

So not even those closest to you can really judge

00:20:15

what's happening in your heart.

00:20:17

Even though some people may want to judge us,

00:20:19

they may look at our actions.

00:20:21

They're not able to make sense of them.

00:20:23

That's okay.

00:20:24

See, most people, especially those

00:20:26

who don't know Jesus yet, when they see us doing

00:20:30

a heart check, we might look crazy because

00:20:32

the world is screaming, "Get more stuff, get more stuff."

00:20:37

And Jesus is saying, "Be on guard, check your heart.

00:20:42

Make sure that your intentions and your actions

00:20:45

are not just about you."

00:20:47

To people, you might look like an unemployed x-ray.

00:20:51

See, without light,

00:20:52

this thing is just a dark piece of paper.

00:20:55

You can't really make sense of what's happening in it.

00:20:57

You can't see that there's actually fractures

00:20:59

and something bad going on.

00:21:02

But when you raise it to the light,

00:21:03

you can see all of that.

00:21:04

And that's how it is for our heart.

00:21:06

Only God can see through the dark pieces of paper,

00:21:10

and it says so in 1 Samuel 16:7:

00:21:13

For the Lord sees not as a man sees:

00:21:16

man looks on the outward appearance,

00:21:19

but the Lord looks at the heart.

00:21:23

So He's looking at our hearts,

00:21:25

and because He is, He knows where we are.

00:21:29

And the good news, friends, is that He wants to help us.

00:21:32

Jesus invites us to take some initiative.

00:21:35

Yes, of course He wants us to do some heart checking.

00:21:37

But let me be clear, we cannot do this without Him.

00:21:41

He invites us to lean in,

00:21:43

but this isn't something that we can do void of Him.

00:21:48

Being rich towards God requires that we need Him.

00:21:54

In just a second, we're going to sing

00:21:56

a song called I Surrender All.

00:21:59

And I want you to think about what step

00:22:01

God may be asking you to take.

00:22:04

See, someone who is surrendered

00:22:06

and someone who is constantly heart checking,

00:22:09

asking themselves, "Am I holding anything too tightly?

00:22:12

Because if I am, I surrender it to Jesus,

00:22:15

because I know that in Jesus is where

00:22:17

I'll be rich towards God, where I will have

00:22:19

that capital I life that He promises,

00:22:22

not just here on Earth, but forever in eternity.

00:22:25

I know it's how I get hope and joy and peace

00:22:28

and the fullness of life that He promised."

00:22:31

Listen, if you want to have that life,

00:22:33

a life that's rich towards God, you can have it.

00:22:36

And Jesus wants you to use this life hack

00:22:40

and He wants to help you.

00:22:42

Let's pray together.

Thank You that You've given us a tool

to check our hearts.

And these are just truths,

this hope that He was doing

when He was talking about spiritual disciplines is

what does it mean to look at the heart?

And one of the best ways that He asked

that question to us still today is through giving.

- That's right.
