The Keys to Unlock Life Changing Prayer | The Book Of Luke Week 5

The short prayer at dinner every night is great, don’t get me wrong, but if that’s all we do we’re missing something. Jesus tells us to pray persistently and specifically and when we do, things change.

  • 00:00:01
    - No, you get this -- this kind of thing.
  • 00:00:04
    She's knocking with conviction.
  • 00:00:06
    She's talking with conviction.
  • 00:00:08
Jesus is trying to say this to us:
  • 00:00:10
    Pray with conviction.
  • 00:00:14
    - Hey, I'm Kyle.
  • 00:00:15
    - I'm Hannah, and welcome to Crossroads.
  • 00:00:17
This week, we're in our final week of the Book of Luke,
  • 00:00:21
and we're calling it Stuff Jesus Made Up.
  • 00:00:23
Because you know what? Jesus had some parables.
  • 00:00:26
    He made those up,
  • 00:00:27
but they actually have truth for our lives.
  • 00:00:28
    - Well, somebody else who likes to make things up,
  • 00:00:31
our senior pastor, Brian Tome. - That's right.
  • 00:00:33
    - He's got a message for us
  • 00:00:35
and yet another famous parable from Jesus Himself.
  • 00:00:38
Let's hear what Brian has to say.
  • 00:00:45
    - There are blessing God has in store for you
  • 00:00:48
that you will not get until you pray.
  • 00:00:51
Hey, I'm Brian, Pastor at Crossroads.
  • 00:00:53
Great to be with you today.
  • 00:00:54
Yeah, I know, I know, the pastor guy
  • 00:00:57
is going to talk about prayer.
  • 00:00:59
    Let me tell you why.
  • 00:01:00
Because I want more stuff for you. I really do.
  • 00:01:03
And you might even think that's weird or dirty.
  • 00:01:05
Let me tell you about a recent story
  • 00:01:07
that just happened to me a few weeks ago.
  • 00:01:08
I was at an event and and I said,
  • 00:01:11
"Hey, anybody have any any needs,
  • 00:01:13
    anything you want more with?"
  • 00:01:15
And a guy raised his hand.
  • 00:01:17
It was about 120 people or so there.
  • 00:01:18
He raised his hand and he said,
  • 00:01:20
"Yeah, I've got a lung issue I'd like prayer for."
  • 00:01:24
I said, "Well, let's, let's pray about that."
  • 00:01:25
So I came up, put my hands on him,
  • 00:01:27
and a couple other guys came up as well,
  • 00:01:29
put my hands on, we're praying for him.
  • 00:01:31
As I was praying by I could feel heat in my hand
  • 00:01:34
and I wondered if it was just me.
  • 00:01:35
I said, "You feel that heat?"
  • 00:01:37
I stopped in the middle of prayer.
  • 00:01:38
I said, "You feel that heat?" He said, "Yeah, I do."
  • 00:01:40
So we prayed and amen, amen.
  • 00:01:42
And it was nice. Fine time.
  • 00:01:44
A lot of times you pray
  • 00:01:45
and you think that nothing has happened.
  • 00:01:47
Well, I get an Instagram message from him
  • 00:01:50
    about two weeks later says,"
  • 00:01:52
I just got back from the VA.
  • 00:01:53
    They've taken X-rays.
  • 00:01:55
I have no more of anything in my lungs.
  • 00:01:58
    He listen to my lungs.
  • 00:02:01
    He said everything is good.
  • 00:02:02
The doctor can't explain it. It's awesome."
  • 00:02:04
Real, verifiable, crazy healing took place.
  • 00:02:07
Let me tell you, I've seen a few of those in my days,
  • 00:02:10
and sometimes they're not the big, big ones like that.
  • 00:02:12
Sometimes it's just things of God meeting your needs
  • 00:02:14
when you're at the very end of your rope
  • 00:02:16
and you might have a hard time with that,
  • 00:02:18
    you might struggle with that.
  • 00:02:20
Let me tell you, the greatest reason to pray
  • 00:02:24
is when you've seen things happen when you pray,
  • 00:02:28
because when you don't see things happening,
  • 00:02:29
    you're not going to pray.
  • 00:02:31
Seven things I want to give you today real quickly.
  • 00:02:34
    Number one is this:
  • 00:02:35
When we pray, we have to have the right theology,
  • 00:02:39
that is the right belief about God.
  • 00:02:41
When someone comes to Jesus with a lung issue
  • 00:02:44
or a --- no one does come to Him with a lung issue in the Bible.
  • 00:02:47
But if someone comes with an eye issue, an ear issue,
  • 00:02:50
paralysis issue, a demon issue, whatever it is,
  • 00:02:53
He never says, "Well, it was God's will
  • 00:02:57
    that you be blind.
  • 00:02:58
Well, it was God's will that you have epilepsy."
  • 00:03:00
    He never does that.
  • 00:03:01
He always treats those sorts of things as things
  • 00:03:05
that are outside of the original created order.
  • 00:03:08
And so He prays for it.
  • 00:03:09
    And you have to believe
  • 00:03:10
when someone has something wrong with them,
  • 00:03:12
none of these weenie boy, weenie girl prayers
  • 00:03:15
of, "Well, God, if it's Your will,
  • 00:03:17
then make this person be able to see again."
  • 00:03:19
No, it's his will that they see again, it's His will
  • 00:03:22
that they'd not have ever been blind to begin with.
  • 00:03:25
You have to have the right theology
  • 00:03:26
    and a sense of boldness.
  • 00:03:27
The second thing, the second thing you have to have
  • 00:03:30
is you have to be on guard against your orphan heart.
  • 00:03:34
All of us have orphan hearts.
  • 00:03:36
The Bible says that we are --
  • 00:03:38
We are we are adopted into the family of God.
  • 00:03:41
He gives us the right to become children of God.
  • 00:03:43
Now I know we're in the Luke series
  • 00:03:45
and we're going to get just a moment into the parable
  • 00:03:47
that we're going to have that's around prayer,
  • 00:03:49
but before I do this parable, I just need to make sure
  • 00:03:51
you have some of the basic ground rules for prayer
  • 00:03:53
    before we get into it.
  • 00:03:55
Orphan heart means that we naturally feel
  • 00:03:57
    separate from God
  • 00:03:59
and we feel like God's holding out on us.
  • 00:04:01
    This is naturally that happens,
  • 00:04:03
which is like some people are naturally blind
  • 00:04:05
    or naturally deaf.
  • 00:04:06
We naturally feel like God is distant from us.
  • 00:04:09
We feel like He's holding out from us.
  • 00:04:10
It's why we're all into fairsies in our culture.
  • 00:04:14
You have that. I have to have that.
  • 00:04:15
I have that. You have to have that.
  • 00:04:17
It's why you might have a lung disease right now
  • 00:04:19
and maybe someone prayed for you
  • 00:04:21
and God has not healed it.
  • 00:04:23
And you might be upset, like,
  • 00:04:26
"Does God not care for me?
  • 00:04:27
Why doesn't God care for me?
  • 00:04:29
    I didn't get my healing."
  • 00:04:31
Or this person died and God didn't stop them from dying.
  • 00:04:35
So therefore, my orphan heart causes me
  • 00:04:37
to be mad at God and disbelieve in God
  • 00:04:39
because I'm bitter or causes me to feel guilty
  • 00:04:43
    that I haven't gotten that
  • 00:04:44
or more prideful that I have
  • 00:04:46
that we have to guard against this.
  • 00:04:47
This is a thing between us and God
  • 00:04:49
and we never know what God's going to do,
  • 00:04:51
when He's going to do it and why and how.
  • 00:04:54
The third thing that happens is we take initiative.
  • 00:04:58
    You've got to take initiative.
  • 00:05:00
When I get down to pray, I'm doing something.
  • 00:05:05
I kind of wish the church that I pastor,
  • 00:05:08
    Crossroads where we have buildings,
  • 00:05:10
it kind of was -- it'd kind of be cool
  • 00:05:12
if you ever came to one of the buildings that I pastor,
  • 00:05:14
    if there was he kneelers.
  • 00:05:16
I used to go to a church, an Episcopal church,
  • 00:05:17
where we knelt and it was like --
  • 00:05:19
just like you're taking initiative, like time to pray,
  • 00:05:22
like, "Okay, I'm getting on it. Time to pray.
  • 00:05:25
    I'm getting --" I like that.
  • 00:05:27
    You have to take initiative.
  • 00:05:29
    I read through the books
  • 00:05:31
of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John,
  • 00:05:32
    the four biographies of Jesus.
  • 00:05:33
And I just -- I just counted up all
  • 00:05:36
the different times when Jesus did miracles.
  • 00:05:39
And there's 41 of them, by the way.
  • 00:05:42
Let me let me read one for you
  • 00:05:43
out of the Book of Luke, chapter 18.
  • 00:05:45
    Here's what it says:
  • 00:06:08
41 different instances of healings, miracles.
  • 00:06:12
34 of the 41, somebody takes the initiative.
  • 00:06:17
This guy's got to say what he wants.
  • 00:06:19
Somebody else, of the remaining 7, at least 5 of them,
  • 00:06:24
Jesus still tells the person to take initiative?
  • 00:06:26
    Go show yourself the priest.
  • 00:06:28
Go down to wash off in the pool of Siloam.
  • 00:06:30
34 of 41 times, the first step is taken by the person
  • 00:06:34
    or a friend of theirs.
  • 00:06:36
Friends who bring a paralyzed guy, as an example,
  • 00:06:39
or a master who's coming to intercede for a servant.
  • 00:06:43
    Just wants to see initiative.
  • 00:06:47
There are things that are going to happen in your life,
  • 00:06:49
whether you pray or not, because God is good,
  • 00:06:52
    He's gracious, He's faithful, He's generous.
  • 00:06:55
And there's certain things, for whatever reason,
  • 00:06:58
you don't get until you take initiative.
  • 00:07:01
    This is really cool.
  • 00:07:02
It says there could be amazing things
  • 00:07:04
that could break in your life
  • 00:07:05
if you simply take the initiative and ask.
  • 00:07:09
Why don't we ask? Why don't we take the initiative?
  • 00:07:12
Four, you have to believe. Believe.
  • 00:07:16
You have to have the faith that what you're asking
  • 00:07:20
    you're going to get,
  • 00:07:22
what you're asking God is going to say yes to.
  • 00:07:26
How much belief? How much faith?
  • 00:07:28
Well, according to Jesus in Luke 17:6, Jesus says,
  • 00:07:43
How much faith? How much belief?
  • 00:07:45
A mustard seed. Just -- Just a little.
  • 00:07:48
Just a little bit. A mustard seed.
  • 00:07:53
Every time I pray for something that's big,
  • 00:07:57
or even small, I have a percentage of myself
  • 00:07:59
    that doesn't believe,
  • 00:08:00
a percentage that is struggling with it.
  • 00:08:04
One time a guy comes to Jesus and says,
  • 00:08:05
"I believe, help me in my unbelief."
  • 00:08:09
Wait a minute, you believe or you don't believe?
  • 00:08:11
It's always a percentage of both.
  • 00:08:13
When that guy came to me for me
  • 00:08:14
to pray for him for his lung disease,
  • 00:08:18
I was probably, oh, I might have been 20% sure
  • 00:08:24
that day that God would heal that man. Maybe 20%.
  • 00:08:28
Sometimes I pray for things and it's like I'm 5% sure.
  • 00:08:32
Sometimes I pray for things and I'm 90% sure.
  • 00:08:35
The 90% sure things don't always come to pass
  • 00:08:39
and sometimes the 5% things come to pass.
  • 00:08:42
I can't explain why this is,
  • 00:08:45
it's just one of the variables.
  • 00:08:46
But you have to have enough belief to ask,
  • 00:08:50
    to talk to God.
  • 00:08:51
    Do you want more?
  • 00:08:55
Do you want something from God that your pocketbook,
  • 00:08:59
that your personality, that your drive can't pull off?
  • 00:09:06
    That is why you'd pray.

    Around Crossroads we believe
  • 00:09:43
    giving is a spiritual discipline.
  • 00:09:45
    - And if you'd like to give
  • 00:09:46
or you want to try it out for maybe
  • 00:09:48
the very first time, you can go to Crossroads.net/give.
  • 00:09:51
Now let's head back to Brian.
  • 00:09:59
    - We've got to recognize and have the belief
  • 00:10:01
    that God answers every prayer.
  • 00:10:04
He does. He either answers with yes, no, or wait.
  • 00:10:09
    Every prayer gets answered.
  • 00:10:10
And we don't know why He says yes to some things,
  • 00:10:12
no to other things. wait on other things.
  • 00:10:15
We don't know why, but here's what we know:
  • 00:10:18
When we pray, we can pray more than one time.
  • 00:10:21
    I find this incredibly encouraging.
  • 00:10:25
Jesus tells a parable, this is all to setup the parable.
  • 00:10:28
It's a parable about the fifth mark
  • 00:10:30
of how to increase your yeses
  • 00:10:33
    is when you are persistent.
  • 00:10:35
One time Jesus was praying for a guy, he's blind.
  • 00:10:39
And then he, after he prays, says,
  • 00:10:41
"How are things going? Does this work?'
  • 00:10:42
    And the guy goes,
  • 00:10:43
"Oh, I see images moving around like trees."
  • 00:10:46
He doesn't know what people and trees,
  • 00:10:48
the difference because he'd never actually seen them,
  • 00:10:50
    he's felt them.
  • 00:10:51
Jesus goes, "Oh, OK, well, it's a little progress,
  • 00:10:53
    but we're not there yet."
  • 00:10:54
So he prays again and then he's fully healed.
  • 00:10:57
    I find it incredibly encouraging
  • 00:11:00
that Jesus had to pray more than once to get a yes.
  • 00:11:04
So if He is way more, 10 times, 100 times,
  • 00:11:08
1000 times a better prayer person than I am
  • 00:11:11
and more worthy than I am, and more what--
  • 00:11:14
understands the spiritual more than I am,
  • 00:11:15
then I shouldn't be upset when I'm praying
  • 00:11:17
for something 20 times or 200 times. Persistence.
  • 00:11:22
This is why Jesus tells this story, this parable,
  • 00:11:25
we're now going to get to in Luke 18:1
  • 00:11:29
that is about why we need to be persistently praying
  • 00:11:32
and not giving up, to keep asking,
  • 00:11:35
    even for the same thing.
  • 00:11:36
Again, your orphan heart may tell you,
  • 00:11:38
"I asked once and I'm done
  • 00:11:39
because God is going to upset at me."
  • 00:11:41
God's not upset with with us when we keep asking.
  • 00:11:45
I'm not upset with my my kids when they keep asking.
  • 00:11:47
I get a little annoyed after the 5th or 10th time,
  • 00:11:51
but that's also because they're really not hearing me.
  • 00:11:54
It's not because I want them to stop asking for something.
  • 00:11:57
God has never tired of hearing your voice.
  • 00:12:00
    He wants you to ask,
  • 00:12:02
and that's why Jesus tells this parable.
  • 00:12:05
    - Then Jesus told his disciples a parable
  • 00:12:08
to show them that they should always pray
  • 00:12:11
    and not give up.
  • 00:12:13
    A judge lacking compassion,
  • 00:12:15
who neither feared God nor cared what people thought,
  • 00:12:18
    governed over a town.
  • 00:12:22
In the same town there was a widow,
  • 00:12:25
    tenacious and steadfast,
  • 00:12:27
who sought justice against her adversary.
  • 00:12:31
Repeatedly she came before the judge pleading,
  • 00:12:34
"Grant me justice against my adversary."
  • 00:12:38
    Unmoved, he sent her away.
  • 00:12:42
She returned over and over and over and over and over,
  • 00:12:47
pleading, "Grant me justice against my adversary."
  • 00:12:52
For some time he refused, but eventually
  • 00:12:55
he said to himself, "Even though I don't fear God
  • 00:12:58
    or care what people think,
  • 00:13:00
yet because this widow keeps bothering me,
  • 00:13:02
I will see that she gets justice
  • 00:13:04
so she will not beat me down with her continual coming."
  • 00:13:13
    And the Lord said:
  • 00:13:39
    - We have an unjust judge
  • 00:13:40
who's not doing the right thing.
  • 00:13:42
The woman keeps asking and asking, keeps coming,
  • 00:13:44
like, "Please, please, would you give me justice?
  • 00:13:50
Hello? I still need an answer today.
  • 00:13:55
    There's been injustice.
  • 00:13:56
Would you come please meet my needs?"
  • 00:13:58
No response, no response, no response.
  • 00:14:00
    And she keeps coming.
  • 00:14:03
    She keeps knocking.
  • 00:14:05
And Jesus is saying, eventually this guy's worn down,
  • 00:14:08
who's not a good guy, not a good guy at all.
  • 00:14:11
He has no fear of God, no fear of men.
  • 00:14:13
    He's just -- he's just a slime ball.
  • 00:14:15
That's what Jesus is saying he's a slime ball judge.
  • 00:14:17
Are all judges are slime balls?
  • 00:14:19
    God loves judges and attorneys,
  • 00:14:21
    especially if you're one. Really.
  • 00:14:23
But this guy doesn't have anything about him
  • 00:14:26
that would do the right thing.
  • 00:14:27
Jesus says because she's persistent, he takes action.
  • 00:14:32
And what Jesus is doing is saying,
  • 00:14:34
"Hey, we've got a heavenly judge who's good
  • 00:14:37
and who's loving and who's wonderful and great.
  • 00:14:41
He's going to be prone to follow through
  • 00:14:44
    when we persevere."
  • 00:14:46
Now, we might ask, "Well, why?
  • 00:14:48
Why would it be that he would persevere one time? Why?
  • 00:14:52
If God wants to do it,
  • 00:14:53
why wouldn't he answer the first time?"
  • 00:14:55
    Don't know.
  • 00:14:57
There's a lot of things about prayer we don't know,
  • 00:14:59
a lot of things about how the heavenly realms operate
  • 00:15:01
    that we don't know.
  • 00:15:02
But I'm telling you, there are things for you in heaven
  • 00:15:06
that you don't have because you haven't asked.
  • 00:15:09
And there are things that are in heaven that are for you
  • 00:15:13
that you don't have because you haven't asked enough.
  • 00:15:16
    Persevere. Persevere. Keep asking.
  • 00:15:22
Keep going to God over what it is.
  • 00:15:25
Your justice, your healing, your loneliness,
  • 00:15:29
    your financial difficulty you're in,
  • 00:15:32
your mental illness, your kid's affliction,
  • 00:15:37
your kid's loneliness, whatever it is, keep going.
  • 00:15:43
This woman, while she is doing, while she's knocking,
  • 00:15:47
you get the sense that it is [knocking loudly].
  • 00:15:50
    It's not, [softly] "Hello. Hello.
  • 00:15:56
I'm just here to bother you again today. Hello."
  • 00:16:01
No. You get this [knocking loudly], this kind of thing.
  • 00:16:03
    She's knocking with conviction.
  • 00:16:06
    She's talking with conviction.
  • 00:16:08
Jesus is trying to say this to us:
  • 00:16:09
    Pray with conviction.
  • 00:16:12
Someone once said, "If your prayers don't move you,
  • 00:16:15
    why would they move God?
  • 00:16:18
    I'm actually offended.
  • 00:16:19
I'm bothered when I go and I hear somebody
  • 00:16:22
present something and they just read off a script
  • 00:16:26
and they don't have any enthusiasm or conviction.
  • 00:16:28
    I am, I'm offended.
  • 00:16:30
I'm like, I would have just rather read your script.
  • 00:16:33
    I want to hear that.
  • 00:16:34
I think God is similar to that.
  • 00:16:38
God is okay with pre-rehearsed prayers.
  • 00:16:41
He's okay with prayers that have been written down.
  • 00:16:43
But man, when you read them or you tell them,
  • 00:16:46
    you've got to mean it.
  • 00:16:47
You've got to talk to Him.
  • 00:16:48
You've got to put some life into it,
  • 00:16:50
not just to keep His attention,
  • 00:16:51
    but because you have conviction.
  • 00:16:54
    Do you really want it?
  • 00:16:56
Remember back to the initiative, we've got to step up.
  • 00:16:59
There's there's a responsiveness that God has to that.
  • 00:17:02
Now, again, I can't explain this all
  • 00:17:06
to you all the full way, but, you know
  • 00:17:09
if you've got some massive affliction that comes to you,
  • 00:17:12
like your ear lobes keep dropping off
  • 00:17:15
and you only have one left
  • 00:17:17
and one's just dropped off and they told you
  • 00:17:19
the other ear lobe is going to drop off, like that.
  • 00:17:21
We all heard that of that or cancer or something like that.
  • 00:17:24
    What do you want?
  • 00:17:25
Do you want a prayer when someone comes and goes,
  • 00:17:27
"Okay, Lord. If it's Your will, I pray that
  • 00:17:33
You would make this person have
  • 00:17:36
whatever you want them to have happen.
  • 00:17:38
But we don't want to force ourselves upon You
  • 00:17:41
and we're only going to ask you once. Amen."
  • 00:17:46
That's sort of who I went to seminary with.
  • 00:17:49
God's decided what He's going to do,
  • 00:17:53
and I just have to get on that plan.
  • 00:17:56
But there's an X factor of there are certain things
  • 00:17:58
that God will not do unless we pray.
  • 00:18:01
I don't know why. It's just the way it is.
  • 00:18:03
That's why Jesus tells us to pray.
  • 00:18:05
Do you want someone in your hour of need
  • 00:18:08
praying that kind of prayer, or do you --
  • 00:18:10
which might have been from the Presbyterian Church,
  • 00:18:12
which is I was ordained in the Presbyterian Church,
  • 00:18:14
    something like that.
  • 00:18:16
Or do you want someone coming to you from
  • 00:18:18
the Holy Fire First Pentecostal Baptism
  • 00:18:21
Touch of the Holy Spirit Healing Church?
  • 00:18:23
    Yeah, you want those folks.
  • 00:18:24
When you're -- when the chips are down,
  • 00:18:26
you want people like going, "I believe it.
  • 00:18:28
I'm going to put --" bamm.
  • 00:18:29
They're putting hands on, going, "God, we pray
  • 00:18:31
that You would bring your angels down right now,
  • 00:18:33
    for healing, we pray.
  • 00:18:34
We pray a wiping out elimination of everything
  • 00:18:37
that is wrong in the bloodstream."
  • 00:18:39
And you want that? You do.
  • 00:18:41
    Why do we want that?
  • 00:18:43
Maybe it's because we're in touch with who God is.
  • 00:18:45
Jesus one time talks about moving mountains.
  • 00:18:49
    In Mark 11:22:
  • 00:19:10
We already dealt with the belief part here.
  • 00:19:11
    We already dealt with that.
  • 00:19:12
But here He says, "Taken up and cast into the sea."
  • 00:19:17
    There's energy there. There's conviction that's there.
  • 00:19:20
Taken up a cast in the sea.
  • 00:19:21
It's not. "Lord, I pray that You just gradually,
  • 00:19:26
over eons of time, erode all the elements
  • 00:19:29
of the mountain into the sea."
  • 00:19:31
No, there's a there's an energy to it
  • 00:19:33
and there's a specificity to it.
  • 00:19:37
That's the last thing I would say.
  • 00:19:38
    When I pray for things,
  • 00:19:41
I'm thinking about things on the molecular level.
  • 00:19:45
I'm thinking for a lung disease,
  • 00:19:46
I'm imagining lung tissue, I'm seeing veins.
  • 00:19:50
I'm asking God to re-knit that person together.
  • 00:19:54
I'll quote scripture like in the book of Psalm, it says,
  • 00:19:56
God knits us together in our mother's womb,
  • 00:19:59
which is why I believe that life is in the womb,
  • 00:20:01
because God's placed life there in that womb.
  • 00:20:05
And so as He's knit together that life in the womb,
  • 00:20:09
    He also can re-knit together.
  • 00:20:11
So I'm seeing God come in and move His hands.
  • 00:20:13
I'm praying for somebody who has seizures,
  • 00:20:16
as I'm praying right now for friends who --
  • 00:20:18
friends a couple of month old baby
  • 00:20:20
    that's having epileptic seizures.
  • 00:20:22
I've prayed for them twice, been with them twice,
  • 00:20:24
praying more often during the day.
  • 00:20:26
    But I'm imagining neurochemicals switching
  • 00:20:30
through the brain and them going in harmony.
  • 00:20:33
    I'm imagining synaptic connections
  • 00:20:35
    and having them wired perfectly.
  • 00:20:37
I'm imagining a dead spot on the brain coming to life.
  • 00:20:40
    I'm being specific with it.
  • 00:20:43
Sometimes I think I'm being specific
  • 00:20:44
just because it keeps me motivated,
  • 00:20:46
it keeps me aware of what's happening.
  • 00:20:49
    Be specific.
  • 00:20:51
I'll tell you what, if you do any one of these 7 things,
  • 00:20:54
any one of these things, and you knock,
  • 00:20:57
you knock on the door of God's heart's in prayer,
  • 00:21:02
you're going to have a more meaningful prayer experience,
  • 00:21:05
    a more meaningful prayer life.
  • 00:21:06
And you just might get something
  • 00:21:11
    that's stored up in heaven
  • 00:21:13
that you wouldn't have had if you didn't ask.
  • 00:21:16
That's why Jesus gives us this parable.
  • 00:21:20
I want to actually pray for you right now.
  • 00:21:22
I wish I knew your specific things
  • 00:21:24
that I could pray for, but I just want to pray
  • 00:21:27
a general prayer for you for your prayer life.
  • 00:21:30
    Let me pray for you.
  • 00:21:31
God, I thank you for giving people the attention span
  • 00:21:34
to hang in there this entire time.
  • 00:21:37
And I thank you, God, for being a God
  • 00:21:39
who wants to listen and wants to respond.
  • 00:21:41
Lord, we know that there are significant issues
  • 00:21:44
    that many of us face,
  • 00:21:45
or just significant things that we want,
  • 00:21:47
things that we'd like to see added to our life.
  • 00:21:50
God, would you here this prayer of ours right now,
  • 00:21:52
as I say this, folks, just say in one sentence
  • 00:21:56
    very clearly what you want.
  • 00:21:58
Hear these prayers as these people say...
  • 00:22:03
We trust you, God, and we ask You,
  • 00:22:06
we want to persistently ask You to make this happen.
  • 00:22:10
And I pray these things according to
  • 00:22:11
the character and identity of Jesus. Amen.
  • 00:24:40
    - Well, we hope that message impacted you, and
  • 00:24:42

Process, journal or discuss the themes of this article - here's a few questions to get the ball rolling...

Welcome to the Weekend-Follow Up This is the group part of the Bible Challenge, so your questions are based on specific Bible passages from the weekend message. Each week, your group will discover what God might be saying to you, and how you can respond through a group discussion.

  1. Who’s the better TV judge: Judge Judy or Judge Steve Harvey?

  2. What stood out to you most from the message?

  3. Who is the most persistent person you know? How has that characteristic benefitted them?

  4. How would you describe your attitude towards prayer? Is it something routine and monotonous? Or maybe intangible and seemingly pointless? Maybe even powerful?

  5. What does our approach to prayer say about our faith? Why do you think that’s significant?

  6. Read Luke 8:6-7. What area have you maybe given up praying for? Where are you feeling a nudge towards re-igniting persistence?

  7. How could you lean more into prayer or persistence this week?

  8. Let’s end with prayer — seems fitting this week. You can say something like, “Jesus, We want to believe you’re hearing us right now. Grow that faith in us. Help us pray without wavering just like the widow did. Thank you for always listening. Amen.”

More from the Weekend

Bonus Questions! Check these out if you’re on a roll and want to go a little deeper.

  • What motivates you to pray? What demotivates you? Explain.
  • How do you respond to prayers that seem to be unanswered?
  • What if you had complete confidence, like at an 11 on a 1-10 scale, that God hears your prayers? How might that change your approach? How could your confidence and belief in that increase?
