Week 2: Managing Technology

Technology can be an incredible blessing, yet also has the power to cause massive devastation and unhappiness. Today we’re going to hear from Andy Crouch, an experienced author, thinker, and leader about how to put the technology around us in its proper place.

Process, journal or discuss the themes of this article - here's a few questions to get the ball rolling...

Three questions to help you and your friends get the most out of this week’s message.

  1. Tools take skill, effort, or risk to get something done. Devices try to make everything easy, everywhere. Think of your favorite tool and your favorite device. Then, tell your group how you use them. (Hint. This is a great place to share some hidden talents.)

  2. We heard that technology is “great at production, but not so good at creativity.” You’ve got 10 minutes to unpack that. What does it mean? Do you agree? How do you use technology on the daily?

  3. Before devices, it was harder to zone out. We needed to go somewhere or get something. (Like Blockbuster. Which is still around, kinda.) Now it’s easier than ever to disengage. Share a story where technology messed with a conversation or relationship. (Bonus points if you put your phones down while each person shares.)

More from the Weekend

This one’s big. Pick a day in the coming week and try out that Sabbath thing Brian and Andy talked about. It’s a day with no work, no email, no production, and no pressure. Just you, your family, your friends, and God. Turn your devices off and try a day of rest.
