Seeing the Supernatural | Faithful in a Faithless World Week 6

Demons…angels…princes—the Bible has some weird stuff in it. It would be easy to just write it off as irrelevant nonsense. Yet right in the middle of this weirdness, there’s a surprisingly compelling message for us thousands of years later. Join us today as Brian talks about how God uses the supernatural to show us that we’re loved.

  • 00:00:02
    - Hey, welcome to Crossroads. My name is Kyle.
  • 00:00:04
    - And I'm Hannah.
  • 00:00:05
    - And today this is our final week
  • 00:00:07
    in the book of Daniel.
  • 00:00:08
We're going to end it with a bang.
  • 00:00:10
We're to jump straight in the prophecies of Daniel 9-12.
  • 00:00:12
    It gets weird.
  • 00:00:13
    - Yeah, you're correct. That's right.
  • 00:00:15
And our senior pastor, Brian Tome,
  • 00:00:17
is going to walk us through starting right now.
  • 00:00:44
    - The book of Daniel is a story of a faithful man
  • 00:00:46
and the unmatched power of God.
  • 00:00:49
At this point, we have seen
  • 00:00:50
some crazy things happen with Daniel.
  • 00:00:52
He's been taken from his home,
  • 00:00:54
    learned to serve the king,
  • 00:00:55
and even thrown to hungry lions.
  • 00:00:58
Although he spent much of his life
  • 00:00:59
away from his home country, Jerusalem,
  • 00:01:01
he never forgot where he came from
  • 00:01:03
and never stopped praying for his people,
  • 00:01:05
    Israel, to be restored.
  • 00:01:07
One day, Daniel receives a response
  • 00:01:09
    to his request for restoration,
  • 00:01:11
and it leaves him shaking in his boots
  • 00:01:13
    and unable to speak.
  • 00:01:15
He has a series of visions
  • 00:01:16
that lead to more questions than answers.
  • 00:01:19
Today, we explore his mysterious visions
  • 00:01:21
and what it means for our life.
  • 00:01:33
    - There is a spiritual realm that affects
  • 00:01:36
the realm that we're in right now.
  • 00:01:39
Hey, my name's Brian. Welcome to Crossroads.
  • 00:01:41
We're going to talk about what's behind the door,
  • 00:01:44
what's behind and underneath the veneer
  • 00:01:47
    in this spiritual realm
  • 00:01:48
and how it affects our lives today.
  • 00:01:56
The last few years have been brutal for us.
  • 00:02:00
We have never seen more conflict, more tension
  • 00:02:04
than we're seeing and experiencing right now,
  • 00:02:07
at least that's what the pundits say.
  • 00:02:09
I read an article in the New York Times, it says this:
  • 00:02:34
Why is substance abuse totally escalating?
  • 00:02:38
Why is mental health totally de-escalating?
  • 00:02:42
Why is it we have more conflict and tension
  • 00:02:44
    seemingly than ever, ever?
  • 00:02:45
Why are we at the edge of our wits end?
  • 00:02:50
It's like every indicator is bad and not looking good.
  • 00:02:55
    And the question is why?
  • 00:02:58
Why is it that we're not having fun
  • 00:03:00
and we are unhappy in our culture?
  • 00:03:03
The Bible can give us some of those answers,
  • 00:03:07
and those answers are related to the spiritual realm.
  • 00:03:11
    There's a realm that's beneath the surface,
  • 00:03:15
    that's behind the other door
  • 00:03:18
that can't be examined inside of a petri dish.
  • 00:03:24
You can't go to a library and get
  • 00:03:26
all the information about the spiritual world
  • 00:03:28
    and then understand it.
  • 00:03:29
You can't model it on a computer, and yet it exists.
  • 00:03:35
And it's crazy that just about all of us
  • 00:03:37
believe that a spiritual world exists.
  • 00:03:40
Like, we walk, walk into a room that's dark
  • 00:03:45
and the hair goes up on the back of our neck.
  • 00:03:48
    Why is that?
  • 00:03:50
We have a dream and we wonder,
  • 00:03:52
was there a spiritual meaning to that dream?
  • 00:03:54
Is God trying to talk to me?
  • 00:03:56
It's because we're not physical beings
  • 00:03:58
    with spiritual properties,
  • 00:04:00
we're spiritual beings with physical properties.
  • 00:04:02
We're tapped into the spiritual world.
  • 00:04:05
    We have a cancer diagnosis
  • 00:04:07
or our grandmother has a cancer diagnosis,
  • 00:04:10
and we all of a sudden believe in prayer
  • 00:04:12
or are open to other people praying for us.
  • 00:04:15
    And the Understanding Unbelief Project,
  • 00:04:18
    which is sponsored through
  • 00:04:19
the University of Kent in the United Kingdom,
  • 00:04:22
it was based on thousands and thousands
  • 00:04:25
of interviews with atheists and agnostics.
  • 00:04:28
    They conclude this:
  • 00:04:52
Naturalist means only what's in nature,
  • 00:04:55
only what I can naturally see is only what there is.
  • 00:04:58
Even atheists and agnostics, there's something
  • 00:05:00
inside of us that believes that there's things
  • 00:05:05
that we can't see and that we can't understand.
  • 00:05:08
The atheists and agnostics are really
  • 00:05:10
most against religion, a structure, a system
  • 00:05:14
    that tries to systematize spirituality,
  • 00:05:16
    and for good reason.
  • 00:05:17
There's there's a lot of things inside of religion
  • 00:05:20
that have hurt people and aren't good.
  • 00:05:22
But religion is different than the awareness
  • 00:05:26
that there's something behind the door,
  • 00:05:29
    something that's underneath the surface.
  • 00:05:32
    This is Daniel's understanding.
  • 00:05:35
It's why he had a powerful life.
  • 00:05:37
And if you want to have a powerful life,
  • 00:05:38
you're going to have to be in touch with this.
  • 00:05:40
Now. Let's talk about this realm for a moment
  • 00:05:43
and some of the attributes or things
  • 00:05:44
that are necessary inside of it.
  • 00:05:47
We see this in the Book of Daniel 9:4.
  • 00:06:10
Whenever we come into a verse in the Bible
  • 00:06:12
    where there's commandments, rules, repentance,
  • 00:06:16
    we tend to get like,
  • 00:06:17
    "Oh, rules, commandments, repentance, ugh."
  • 00:06:22
But when we understand where Daniel starts,
  • 00:06:25
this looks a little bit differently.
  • 00:06:27
He talks about Love, your steadfast love.
  • 00:06:31
Any talk or conversation about repentance and sin
  • 00:06:35
needs to start with a conversation about love.
  • 00:06:38
Any talk about a spiritual realm,
  • 00:06:41
any talk about a realm that exists behind the door,
  • 00:06:46
underneath the veneer that's influencing us,
  • 00:06:49
any talk about that has to start with
  • 00:06:52
    and conclude with love.
  • 00:06:55
    That's what Daniel talked about:
  • 00:06:56
    Your steadfast love.
  • 00:06:58
Daniel has the powerful life he has because
  • 00:07:02
he understands God as having steadfast love.
  • 00:07:05
    What's that steadfast mean?
  • 00:07:07
    It means it never ends.
  • 00:07:08
It goes on and on and on and on.
  • 00:07:10
It's steadfast. It's who he is.
  • 00:07:13
The idea of repenting, turning from our sin,
  • 00:07:16
turning from the ways that we've lived,
  • 00:07:17
asking God for forgiveness, we won't do that
  • 00:07:21
unless we have a foundation of belief
  • 00:07:23
    that God loves you.
  • 00:07:25
Do you believe God loves you?
  • 00:07:27
You have to believe that because of our core base
  • 00:07:31
isn't the belief that God accepts us
  • 00:07:34
the way we are right now, though we may have goals
  • 00:07:36
for us to change and go differently,
  • 00:07:38
that he accepts us the way we are right now,
  • 00:07:40
he's a fan of who we are right now.
  • 00:07:42
He has warm emotions for us right now.
  • 00:07:45
He loves us the way we are right now.
  • 00:07:46
It's that baseline that helps me to repent.
  • 00:07:50
If I don't have that baseline of understanding
  • 00:07:52
and believing that God loves me,
  • 00:07:54
then it's going to be all about behavior modification.
  • 00:07:57
I'm going to repent or change so that God loves me more.
  • 00:08:02
No, it doesn't work that way.
  • 00:08:04
In fact, that will only make us more bitter.
  • 00:08:06
That will make us actual atheists and agnostics
  • 00:08:08
if we keep thinking we have to do this and that
  • 00:08:10
    for God to love us.
  • 00:08:11
Eventually we're going to forget that guy
  • 00:08:13
or woman or whatever he, she, it is, I'm done with it.
  • 00:08:17
We have to believe that God loves us,
  • 00:08:20
and this is the foundation from which we grow.
  • 00:08:23
    This was Daniel, his belief.
  • 00:08:25
He wasn't afraid of God's wrath
  • 00:08:28
caused him to do all the things that he's done
  • 00:08:30
in this series that we've looked at.
  • 00:08:32
It wasn't that that made him
  • 00:08:34
want to have water and vegetables.
  • 00:08:36
It wasn't that that caused him to pray at the window
  • 00:08:40
towards Jerusalem three times a day on his knees.
  • 00:08:44
It wasn't religion that he was trying to fulfill,
  • 00:08:47
a system he was trying to operate in,
  • 00:08:49
it is that these were expressions of his love for God
  • 00:08:53
and ways that he felt the love of God.
  • 00:08:57
    - Ok, last week I talked about giving
  • 00:08:59
in less than 30 seconds. - You did. It was really good.
  • 00:09:01
    - See if you can do it. Ready? - Ok, I'm ready.
  • 00:09:03
One thing we want you to know
  • 00:09:04
is giving as a spiritual act and trust me,
  • 00:09:07
we're only going to talk about it for 30 seconds.
  • 00:09:09
    That's right.
  • 00:09:10
So giving is something that we do to honor God
  • 00:09:12
and show him where our heart is,
  • 00:09:13
that we are giving our money to him,
  • 00:09:15
    whether he blesses us immediately
  • 00:09:17
or he doesn't ever bless us again.
  • 00:09:18
And if you want to take that step, you can give
  • 00:09:20
and go to Crossroads.net/give right now.
  • 00:09:23
    - 20.03, that is strong on.
  • 00:09:26
Come on, let's get back to Brian.
  • 00:09:28
    - Iin the book of Daniel 9 is says this:
  • 00:09:48
    You are greatly love.
  • 00:09:51
Daniel has this vision, he doesn't understand it.
  • 00:09:54
    He knows that it's spiritual.
  • 00:09:55
It's not the pizza he had
  • 00:09:56
or the matzah bread the day before.
  • 00:09:58
He knows there's something profound about it.
  • 00:10:00
So he's asking, "How do I know this? What is this?"
  • 00:10:03
And there's a messenger that comes to him
  • 00:10:05
from the spiritual realm and says,
  • 00:10:08
"Hey, before we get into anything here,
  • 00:10:10
know this, you are greatly loved.
  • 00:10:12
    You're greatly loved."
  • 00:10:13
Do you know that God thinks that about you?
  • 00:10:15
Do you believe that God thinks that about you?
  • 00:10:18
Some of us, we don't pray because
  • 00:10:21
we're afraid God might speak to us.
  • 00:10:23
And if God speaks to us, he's going to tell us,
  • 00:10:25
"You're just an idiot. You got problems."
  • 00:10:27
Some of us, when we think that God might send
  • 00:10:31
a prophet to speak to us like Daniel,
  • 00:10:33
it might be all doom and gloom.
  • 00:10:36
You have to believe that when God interacts with you,
  • 00:10:39
the first thing he would say is,
  • 00:10:40
"Hey, you are greatly loved. I love you."
  • 00:10:43
I know that's mind blowing for some of us
  • 00:10:45
    who've been caught in religion
  • 00:10:46
and caught in judgementalism for a long, long time.
  • 00:10:49
Being loved, by the way, doesn't mean
  • 00:10:51
that God affirms all of your choices.
  • 00:10:53
That's our problem, we don't understand love today.
  • 00:10:56
We think the way that I'm loved is
  • 00:10:58
you affirm everything I'm currently doing.
  • 00:11:01
No, God does not affirm everything that we're doing.
  • 00:11:03
That doesn't mean he doesn't love us, though.
  • 00:11:07
There's a baseline of knowing that God is for you.
  • 00:11:11
And if he's for you, who can be against you?
  • 00:11:14
Daniel gets this again and again that he is loved.
  • 00:11:19
Then in the Book of Daniel Chapter 10,
  • 00:11:22
still inside of the same recourse, it says this:
  • 00:11:45
We're going to get into some freaky stuff.
  • 00:11:47
We're about to get into some freaky stuff.
  • 00:11:50
But when people start talking about spiritual realm
  • 00:11:52
    and spiritual battle, spiritual war,
  • 00:11:56
they tend to not talk about love.
  • 00:11:58
Here it is right now, I'm going to show you
  • 00:11:59
one of the freakiest things in the Bible
  • 00:12:02
that gives us an insight as the spiritual realm,
  • 00:12:04
but you had to see again and again and again,
  • 00:12:08
    it's about love.
  • 00:12:09
    Whenever somebody starts getting into
  • 00:12:12
    spiritual warfare, spiritual darkness,
  • 00:12:14
spiritual battle and they don't understand love,
  • 00:12:17
I know they don't understand spiritual war,
  • 00:12:19
    spiritual darkness, spiritual battle,
  • 00:12:21
because it's all about love, the love of God,
  • 00:12:26
the steadfast love of God who is for you
  • 00:12:30
    and who is about you.
  • 00:12:32
And we have to be for other people
  • 00:12:35
    and about other people.
  • 00:12:38
    Are you hearing me?
  • 00:12:40
I can't get this through enough.
  • 00:12:42
The main spiritual battle that's going to happen
  • 00:12:45
in your life is whether or not
  • 00:12:47
you understand the love of God.
  • 00:12:49
That's the biggest spiritual battle there is.
  • 00:12:52
If you don't understand the love of God,
  • 00:12:54
if you don't sense the love of God,
  • 00:12:56
if you don't channel the love of God to others,
  • 00:12:58
you are never going to get to level two,
  • 00:13:01
    whatever that is,
  • 00:13:02
    in understanding the spiritual realm.
  • 00:13:05
    Everything starts with love.
  • 00:13:10
    Let's see what happens.
  • 00:13:25
Daniel is praying to understand this vision.
  • 00:13:29
And he gets, the angel comes,
  • 00:13:30
"Hey, your prayers have been heard."
  • 00:13:32
Maybe some of us need to hear that right now.
  • 00:13:34
If you've been praying for something,
  • 00:13:35
    "Is God hearing my prayer?"
  • 00:13:37
Yes, your prayers are being heard.
  • 00:13:40
    And then it continues.
  • 00:14:03
Gosh, there's that -- there's that sound again.
  • 00:14:08
    [muffled sound]
  • 00:14:11
    Let's go see that.
  • 00:14:18
    He's praying and nothing's happening,
  • 00:14:21
and we see just a glimpse, just a glimpse
  • 00:14:23
of why nothing is happening in this spiritual realm.
  • 00:14:28
    [muffled sound]
  • 00:14:30
    A door opens
  • 00:14:32
    and we see something
  • 00:14:36
    that we hadn't seen before.
  • 00:14:38
He says it was the prince of Persia
  • 00:14:41
that was holding me up, this other entity.
  • 00:14:43
You're like, "Wait. Whoa, whoa, whoa.
  • 00:14:45
Prince of Persia. Wait, what? Who is it?"
  • 00:14:48
We want so much more, but that's the point.
  • 00:14:50
    It's just an opening,
  • 00:14:51
a glimpse into the spiritual realm, and it shuts.
  • 00:14:53
    Opens and it shuts.
  • 00:14:55
It's almost like the Bible doesn't want to describe
  • 00:14:58
and define a lot because we would maybe
  • 00:15:00
get too into the spiritual warfare,
  • 00:15:03
    maybe not into love.
  • 00:15:05
    But this is real.
  • 00:15:12
This isn't an isolated event in the Bible.
  • 00:15:17
This realm is described and defined
  • 00:15:20
in the Bible in other places.
  • 00:15:22
In the Book of Ephesians 6:12, here's what says:
  • 00:15:43
So there are powers and principalities,
  • 00:15:46
    there's a structure, there's an authority structure
  • 00:15:49
that's behind the veil, that's behind the door.
  • 00:15:53
And I wish that when this door opens up
  • 00:15:56
in Daniel 10 and he talks about this,
  • 00:15:59
this king of Persia, king of Persia, prince struggle.
  • 00:16:03
    What is it?
  • 00:16:04
I wish. I really, really wish he went into more detail.
  • 00:16:07
    He doesn't.
  • 00:16:08
Maybe it's good because if he went into more detail
  • 00:16:11
we'd probably fixated on the spiritual realm
  • 00:16:15
more than we'd be fixated on love.
  • 00:16:17
    When you're fixated on love,
  • 00:16:18
you're operating in the spiritual realm because
  • 00:16:21
that's where the game is won and lost.
  • 00:16:25
But it's another verse here in Ephesians,
  • 00:16:27
in the New Testament, to show us there's a structure,
  • 00:16:29
something that's going on behind the scenes.
  • 00:16:33
There's things that we don't understand
  • 00:16:35
    that are affecting us today.
  • 00:16:37
These things start to shape our lives
  • 00:16:40
when we understand that these things actually exist.
  • 00:16:46
And these things will actually increase
  • 00:16:50
our prayer life, we'll actually start to pray.
  • 00:16:53
    Remember where this started?
  • 00:16:55
Daniel hears, "Your prayers have been heard."
  • 00:16:59
One of the reasons why we don't pray
  • 00:17:01
is we don't love God all that much
  • 00:17:04
or we would want to talk to him.
  • 00:17:06
You know, the love is starting to die
  • 00:17:08
    in your relationship
  • 00:17:09
when you don't want to talk to the person.
  • 00:17:11
So we don't have a great prayer life because
  • 00:17:13
we don't have a great love life with God.
  • 00:17:16
Or when we do talk with God,
  • 00:17:18
we don't know what to say.
  • 00:17:19
    And some of us,
  • 00:17:20
we don't even want to ask God for anything,
  • 00:17:22
because if he doesn't give it to us,
  • 00:17:26
then we'll be crushed even more because
  • 00:17:28
we'll believe that he doesn't actually love us.
  • 00:17:30
And so we're actually afraid to pray for things.
  • 00:17:33
We'd rather pray for starving children in Afghanistan,
  • 00:17:36
or we'd rather pray for some other such thing,
  • 00:17:40
because if we pray for something that we want
  • 00:17:43
and then God doesn't do it, we're going to be crushed
  • 00:17:45
because we might conclude, maybe he doesn't love me.
  • 00:17:51
He can love you and choose
  • 00:17:54
not to give you the thing that you're praying for.
  • 00:17:57
    He could also love you,
  • 00:17:59
but there's static in the spiritual realm
  • 00:18:02
where it's taking a long time to get the answer
  • 00:18:04
that he wants to give you because there's forces
  • 00:18:07
that are battling it out inside of the spiritual realm.
  • 00:18:11
Prayer isn't always epic and fulfilling.
  • 00:18:16
Daniel has some prayers that are epic and fulfilling,
  • 00:18:19
but it's not always epic and fulfilling.
  • 00:18:21
We're looking at a highlight reel in Daniel's life.
  • 00:18:24
He lived 80-ish years, at least 80 years.
  • 00:18:27
The book of Daniel was written about over 80 years.
  • 00:18:29
    There's 12 chapters.
  • 00:18:31
And there's some really intense spiritual things
  • 00:18:33
    that are happening in it.
  • 00:18:34
But we realize it's a highlight reel,
  • 00:18:36
we're getting some stuff here and there.
  • 00:18:38
But it wasn't like every day he was having
  • 00:18:40
a window, a door opened to understand
  • 00:18:43
the king of Persia or the prince of Persia.
  • 00:18:46
    It's a highlight reel.
  • 00:18:47
It's the way our lives are going to be.
  • 00:18:49
We're going to just drone on
  • 00:18:51
    in meandering prayers sometimes,
  • 00:18:53
and we're going to really wrestle with love.
  • 00:18:55
And we're going to try to be loving.
  • 00:18:57
Every once in a while will get it right.
  • 00:19:00
But they're likely going to be
  • 00:19:02
long periods of time where we're stumbling,
  • 00:19:05
where we're hearing things, but we're not seeing things.
  • 00:19:09
This is, I think, the life of Daniel.
  • 00:19:11
    We're getting his highlight reels.
  • 00:19:14
In your highlight reel with God,
  • 00:19:16
you may have one every day, but I don't think so.
  • 00:19:19
I think your highlight reel with God
  • 00:19:21
might be you're going to have
  • 00:19:22
breakthrough spiritual moments once a year, maybe,
  • 00:19:27
once a month, maybe once a week. I don't know.
  • 00:19:31
I'm just trying to normalize for you,
  • 00:19:34
don't feel like God doesn't love you
  • 00:19:37
if you're not having breakthrough moments with him
  • 00:19:39
and gushes of love coming through your mind.
  • 00:19:43
We know that we love him,
  • 00:19:44
we know that he loves us when we operate
  • 00:19:47
in a way that he would be honored, when we pray.
  • 00:19:51
One of the people who is most operative in prayer
  • 00:19:55
and in the spiritual realm that I know
  • 00:19:57
    is my mother-in-law, Sally.
  • 00:20:00
When I first came in the family,
  • 00:20:02
married her daughter Lib, and I got in the family,
  • 00:20:06
her and I were coming from
  • 00:20:07
    really different spiritual perspectives.
  • 00:20:09
The same spirituality, following Jesus, Christians,
  • 00:20:12
but I was coming from a place of being in seminary.
  • 00:20:16
I wanted to see an answer
  • 00:20:18
that was given in the Bible and everything.
  • 00:20:20
If everything didn't start and end with the Bible,
  • 00:20:23
I was feeling queasy about it.
  • 00:20:25
She was and is more of a prayer person,
  • 00:20:30
operates more in the spiritual realm.
  • 00:20:32
Words you could use for her would be charismatic,
  • 00:20:36
or maybe with a dash of Pentecostalism thrown in there.
  • 00:20:40
    She speaks in tongues.
  • 00:20:41
She, you know, all kinds of stuff like that.
  • 00:20:45
And as a 20 something guy who was operating
  • 00:20:49
more in the Bible, she had beliefs
  • 00:20:51
    that really annoyed me.
  • 00:20:53
And we would get in, you know,
  • 00:20:55
we'd get in fisticuffs and arguments.
  • 00:20:58
Actually, I would argue with her,
  • 00:20:59
she wouldn't argue so much to me,
  • 00:21:01
but I would with her. Why?
  • 00:21:02
Because I had a love problem.
  • 00:21:04
    I had a love problem.
  • 00:21:05
I thought it was about the right theology,
  • 00:21:07
but really it was about me not having
  • 00:21:10
    enough love for my mother-in-law
  • 00:21:13
to just let her believe certain things
  • 00:21:16
that could be true, not be true.
  • 00:21:18
It doesn't matter to me and isn't worth
  • 00:21:20
    the relationship being in turmoil
  • 00:21:22
over me making an issue out of it.
  • 00:21:24
    I had a love problem.
  • 00:21:26
As I've matured, not just matured physically
  • 00:21:29
and age wise, but matured spiritually
  • 00:21:31
and have grown in my love, our relationship is great.
  • 00:21:34
Actually it was always great, it's always been great.
  • 00:21:36
She's always been a blessing to me.
  • 00:21:38
Always, always has been a blessing to me.
  • 00:21:40
    I just wish I had this --
  • 00:21:41
I had this little, just cantankerous debate
  • 00:21:44
with her from time to time.
  • 00:21:45
    But it's always been great.
  • 00:21:47
But in the years that she's got,
  • 00:21:48
as we've both gotten older, it's gotten even better
  • 00:21:51
    and better and sweeter.
  • 00:21:52
    And unfortunately, she's, you know,
  • 00:21:53
in her late 80s right now.
  • 00:21:55
And her and my father-in-law, stuff in the late 80s
  • 00:21:58
for many people starts to pop up, physical issues
  • 00:22:01
and all kinds of issues start popping up.
  • 00:22:03
And so we're there, Lib and I are there for them.
  • 00:22:05
We live in Cincinnati, so we're there
  • 00:22:07
to help them with anything that we can do.
  • 00:22:09
We got a call that their refrigerator has gone out.
  • 00:22:13
And can we help them find a new refrigerator?
  • 00:22:16
Of course. Sure, we can, it's pretty simple,
  • 00:22:17
just go to homedepot.com or Lowes.com.
  • 00:22:21
Home Depot, if you want to sponsor us,
  • 00:22:22
you can pay for your ad right now.
  • 00:22:24
Anyway, we would go there and we would say,
  • 00:22:26
"We're just going to find you a refrigerator.
  • 00:22:28
    We'll have it delivered
  • 00:22:30
and all that's going to be good."
  • 00:22:31
So we're working on that process.
  • 00:22:32
The next day we hear from my mother-in-law, Sally.
  • 00:22:36
"Hey, no problem. Don't need it.
  • 00:22:38
    Don't need it fixed because
  • 00:22:40
    I prayed over the refrigerator
  • 00:22:42
    and it's fixed. It's running."
  • 00:22:45
We are like, "Huh? Of course she did.
  • 00:22:48
Of course, Nan would pray over the refrigerator."
  • 00:22:50
    We're laughing about this.
  • 00:22:52
We're like, "Yeah, that's exactly something she'd do,
  • 00:22:55
pray for a refrigerator and just like God
  • 00:22:57
    to actually heal her refrigerator."
  • 00:23:02
So we start talking about this and Lib and I realize,
  • 00:23:05
you know, we've had this icemaker
  • 00:23:07
that's been broken for a while.
  • 00:23:10
We paid for to get fixed before, broke again,
  • 00:23:13
and I've done everything to figure it out.
  • 00:23:15
I just want to pay for another repair guy
  • 00:23:17
    to come in for it.
  • 00:23:18
Shut it off. Turn off the breaker.
  • 00:23:20
Turn it back on. Cycle through the different settings.
  • 00:23:22
And it's just not freezing things anymore.
  • 00:23:25
But we haven't prayed for it.
  • 00:23:27
So, Lib just reach out her hand towards the icemaker,
  • 00:23:31
says, "Pray in the name of Jesus
  • 00:23:34
that that icemaker would be healed.
  • 00:23:35
Bless us, Lord, and heal that icemaker."
  • 00:23:38
I'm standing they're like, "Yeah, God, yeah,
  • 00:23:40
    same with me. Amen."
  • 00:23:42
    Turn that thing on,
  • 00:23:44
that thing has been making ice now for three weeks.
  • 00:23:47
Three weeks it's been making ice.
  • 00:23:49
Now, some of the naturalists among us would say,
  • 00:23:51
"Well, there's just something in line.
  • 00:23:52
You didn't do this or you didn't do that."
  • 00:23:54
I understand how things work mechanically.
  • 00:23:56
I rebuild engines. I install things. I rewire things.
  • 00:24:00
Believe me, I understand this stuff.
  • 00:24:02
I've looked into it. I have.
  • 00:24:03
This was a healing of an ice maker by God,
  • 00:24:08
just like he healed the refrigerator.
  • 00:24:10
    I know this sounds crazy.
  • 00:24:11
    I know this sounds stupid.
  • 00:24:13
Why would God care about an ice maker?
  • 00:24:15
Why would God care about a refrigerator?
  • 00:24:16
I know that. I know it sounds crazy.
  • 00:24:19
    I know it sounds stupid.
  • 00:24:20
And so does everything else in the spiritual realm.
  • 00:24:23
That's why it's called the spiritual realm.
  • 00:24:25
We don't have words for it.
  • 00:24:28
We don't have understandings for it.
  • 00:24:34
When you pray something and God says yes to it,
  • 00:24:39
it's the spiritual realm in operation,
  • 00:24:40
or specifically it's God in operation.
  • 00:24:45
When you see yourself being used to bring
  • 00:24:46
someone to Christ, you're operating in love
  • 00:24:49
and you're experiencing the spiritual realm.
  • 00:24:51
When you deepen somebody in their relationship
  • 00:24:53
with Christ, you're operating in love
  • 00:24:56
and seeing somebody operate inside the spiritual realm.
  • 00:24:59
When you have a godly marriage,
  • 00:25:01
when you have a godly dating relationship
  • 00:25:03
and you're operating according to love,
  • 00:25:05
you're operating in the spiritual realm.
  • 00:25:08
When you see somebody and talk with somebody
  • 00:25:10
who has different beliefs than you
  • 00:25:12
    and different views than you.
  • 00:25:14
And they want to pick a fight with you,
  • 00:25:15
and they want to get you on your edge
  • 00:25:17
and you love your neighbor as yourself,
  • 00:25:21
you're operating in the spiritual realm.
  • 00:25:23
When you see somebody who is hurting financially
  • 00:25:27
and you don't want to just pray for them,
  • 00:25:28
you want to actually give them some money
  • 00:25:30
for a few meals, you're operating
  • 00:25:33
    inside of the spiritual realm.
  • 00:25:35
All of these things start, all of these things end,
  • 00:25:39
and all these things go through love.
  • 00:25:43
This is complicated stuff that we're dealing with today.
  • 00:25:45
    It's intense things.
  • 00:25:47
The keys to understanding them are inside of the Bible.
  • 00:25:50
That's why this year we're doing the Bible Challenge,
  • 00:25:53
year of the Bible Challenge 2022.

  • 00:26:03
to get yourself in touch with the love of God,
  • 00:26:06
which means you're going to get that through the Bible.
  • 00:26:08
You're not going to get that through Netflix.
  • 00:26:10
You're not going to get that through broadcast news.
  • 00:26:13
You get it through the Scriptures, the love of God
  • 00:26:16
and the awareness of something great and beautiful
  • 00:26:19
that is just behind the scenes.
  • 00:26:22
Let me pray for you right now.
  • 00:26:23
Jesus, I thank you for your love for us.
  • 00:26:26
It is astounding, and it's astounding to see
  • 00:26:29
how Daniel operated in that love
  • 00:26:31
and in the power of your spirit.
  • 00:26:33
Help us to be more like him,
  • 00:26:36
and mostly more like you. Amen.
  • 00:26:41
    - Hey, you know that Bible Challenge

  • 00:26:54
and just learning about the Bible.
  • 00:26:56
And if you fell off and you had to app,
  • 00:26:57
maybe you deleted it, maybe you haven't used it,
  • 00:26:59
like, in like 2 or 3 weeks, whatever.

Process, journal or discuss the themes of this article - here's a few questions to get the ball rolling...

This is the group part of the Bible Challenge, so your questions are based on a specific Bible passage like the weekend message. Each week, your group will discover what God might be saying to you, and how you can respond through a group discussion

  1. Who would win in a battle between Gandalf (LOTR) and Geralt of Rivia (The Witcher)? (Or pick your own matchup.)

  2. What stood out to you in this week’s message?

  3. How do you react when you hear about supernatural experiences in the Bible? What if those experiences happen today?

  4. Daniel didn’t understand all the supernatural stuff God showed him. Why do you think God sometimes uses confusing things to communicate with us? How do you respond when you don’t understand?

  5. One way we can engage in the supernatural is through prayer. What’s something you need prayer for? Commit to praying for each other this week and come back next week to share what that experience was like.

  6. Now close your time in prayer. Here’s an example: “God, thank you for fighting for us. Give us the faith to trust in You and help us remember the steadfast love You have for us. Amen.”

More from the Weekend

Bonus Questions Check these out if you’re on a roll and want to go a little deeper!

  1. Read Ephesians 6:12. Where are you experiencing a supernatural battle happening in your life right now?
  2. Read 2 Corinthians 3:18 and 2 Corinthians 4:3-4. All of us are always being spiritually formed by something, and that determines how we engage in the supernatural battle. What do you feel like is spiritually forming you right now?
