  • 00:00:05
    Merry Christmas.
  • 00:00:06
    Welcome to Crossroads Christmas Special.
  • 00:00:08
My name is Brian, I am so excited about today.
  • 00:00:11
We have Grammy Award winning artists,
  • 00:00:13
    we've got World-Class Dancers,
  • 00:00:15
we're going to be in the middle of Moab, Utah.
  • 00:00:17
    We have original music.
  • 00:00:18
We're doing everything we can to give
  • 00:00:21
you and I great Christmas experience because,
  • 00:00:23
man, we need Christmas more than ever
  • 00:00:25
because 2020 has sucked from start to finish,
  • 00:00:29
or at least from March until now,
  • 00:00:30
    it's been incredibly difficult.
  • 00:00:32
It's been sort of like this tree behind me.
  • 00:00:35
It's made national news on Fountain Square in Cincinnati
  • 00:00:38
of a tree that went up
  • 00:00:39
and it was like an ugly Charlie Brown reject tree,
  • 00:00:44
    just nasty and gnarly.
  • 00:00:45
    And what do you know?
  • 00:00:46
They brought somebody in and they did his magic to it.
  • 00:00:49
And it ended up being an amazing, beautiful thing.
  • 00:00:52
That's kind of what Christmas is.
  • 00:00:54
Our life is difficult, things are going right.
  • 00:00:56
And someone comes in and does something,
  • 00:00:58
    His name is Jesus.
  • 00:00:59
    He's known as the Savior.
  • 00:01:01
And we want to feel that today.
  • 00:01:02
We want to have a good time with that today.
  • 00:01:04
Some of us in the midst of our difficulty,
  • 00:01:06
    we're asking, "Where's God
  • 00:01:09
in the midst of all of our waiting?"
  • 00:01:12
He's inviting us to come in from the cold.
  • 00:04:11
    - We want to welcome, Lecrae.
  • 00:04:12
    - Glad to be here.
  • 00:04:13
    - Man, it's good to have you here.
  • 00:04:15
We've got some real deal talent here.
  • 00:04:17
And one of the very few people
  • 00:04:18
    when I'm on set with,
  • 00:04:19
    you're actually taller than me.
  • 00:04:20
    I don't like it.
  • 00:04:21
    - Yeah, I can see everything going on up there,
  • 00:04:23
    just so, you know.
  • 00:04:24
    - (chuckles) I'm not going to be
  • 00:04:25
braiding my hair, that's for darn sure.
  • 00:04:27
    I'm normally supposed to be
  • 00:04:28
    the tallest person around here,
  • 00:04:30
and you've got me beat. - Not today.
  • 00:04:31
Nah, you could make it to the NBA,
  • 00:04:33
but you like a short guard.
  • 00:04:34
    - I would not make it to the NBA
  • 00:04:36
on any -- on any reason at all.
  • 00:04:39
I'm so excited to be with you because
  • 00:04:41
the whole idea behind this was
  • 00:04:42
get back to old school Christmas special.
  • 00:04:45
When I was a little itty bitty kid,
  • 00:04:46
I remember being with my parents
  • 00:04:48
and watching these Christmas specials on TV.
  • 00:04:50
David Bowie singing with Bing Crosby
  • 00:04:54
and Sammy Davis Jr. And just these things
  • 00:04:57
    where everyone would just have
  • 00:04:58
a nice, good feels of Christmas.
  • 00:05:00
So we're trying to do that today
  • 00:05:01
and glad you're to be a part of it.
  • 00:05:03
We're going to hear more from you later
  • 00:05:04
    and hear you sing later.
  • 00:05:06
But first, would you believe it if I told you
  • 00:05:09
that we can tell the whole Christmas story beatbox?
  • 00:05:14
    - Wait, wait. What?
  • 00:05:15
    - Well, we're going to do
  • 00:05:16
something special for you right now.
  • 00:05:18
    - I'm nervous.
  • 00:05:21
    - The Christmas story from the Bible.
  • 00:05:24
A surprise is the kind of thing you remember,
  • 00:05:27
and that's what we do every single December,
  • 00:05:29
we celebrate Christmas when Jesus was born.
  • 00:05:31
The surprise more surprising than any before.
  • 00:05:34
It wasn't that no one knew
  • 00:05:35
God would be sending a rescuer.
  • 00:05:37
    The narrative had been pending
  • 00:05:39
    for thousands of years.
  • 00:05:40
    They knew He'd appeared,
  • 00:05:41
    but unknown with the when
  • 00:05:42
and the how and the year.
  • 00:05:43
In the beginning, God had created the world,
  • 00:05:46
    which was good.
  • 00:05:47
But He thought his greatest idea
  • 00:05:49
had been people who He loved them,
  • 00:05:50
so He gave them the world He had made for a home.
  • 00:05:53
But God told them one rule
  • 00:05:54
    they could never break,
  • 00:05:55
    there existed a tree
  • 00:05:56
that they just must not take any fruit from,
  • 00:05:58
not one piece, not one single bite.
  • 00:06:00
But a devious serpent said that was a lie.
  • 00:06:03
    He convinced God's creation
  • 00:06:04
they could do what they want.
  • 00:06:05
They didn't need rules, he said, nonchalant.
  • 00:06:07
    So they tasted the fruit
  • 00:06:09
    and they instantly knew
  • 00:06:10
that it wasn't a thing that had been good to do.
  • 00:06:12
    [beatboxing]
  • 00:06:15
But God couldn't let that be the end of the story,
  • 00:06:17
    even though we all know
  • 00:06:18
that they should have been sorry.
  • 00:06:19
He crafted a plan to redeem His creations.
  • 00:06:22
His plan was a person, a family, a nation.
  • 00:06:24
    Oh, yes, that Mary,
  • 00:06:25
    a girl of great import
  • 00:06:27
for without her part in the story
  • 00:06:28
    we'd be short a mother,
  • 00:06:30
someone who could have the new baby.
  • 00:06:32
Into the angel, let's call him Gabe.
  • 00:06:34
    So Gabe told young Mary,
  • 00:06:35
    "You're having a son.
  • 00:06:36
    Please call him Jesus because
  • 00:06:38
He is the one who saved the whole world."
  • 00:06:40
    This was God's rescue plan
  • 00:06:41
    to reverse the worst curse.
  • 00:06:42
    Remember that, the first man?
  • 00:06:46
So Mary was in, she believed, good to go,
  • 00:06:48
but she was engaged to a guy well call Joe.
  • 00:06:50
    He had reason to fear
  • 00:06:52
when the angel said not to,
  • 00:06:53
but opposite that he obeyed like you ought to.
  • 00:06:55
    So Joe was from Bethlehem.
  • 00:06:57
Oh, that little town? Yeah, that one.
  • 00:06:58
    So they made a trip,
  • 00:06:59
looked around for a place they could stay,
  • 00:07:01
    get married, some peace.
  • 00:07:02
But that night wasn't silent, not in the least.
  • 00:07:05
On this night had come God's great big surprise.
  • 00:07:07
A baby was born. Yes, a baby who cries,
  • 00:07:10
who spits up and gets up all hours of the night.
  • 00:07:12
A newborn born to make everything right.
  • 00:07:17
But God did tell some of the birth of His son.
  • 00:07:19
They weren't popular nor special someone's,
  • 00:07:21
just some shepherds watching over their flock
  • 00:07:24
    when an angel appeared
  • 00:07:25
    and they started to gawk
  • 00:07:26
    and the angel said,
  • 00:07:27
"You've got no reason to fear.
  • 00:07:29
In fact, you should celebrate, Jesus is here.
  • 00:07:31
He's been born in the stable, a manger, in fact.
  • 00:07:33
    So he's going, get moving.
  • 00:07:35
    It's time to react.
  • 00:07:36
"A stable?" They may have thought,
  • 00:07:37
    "That can't be right.
  • 00:07:38
    A savior would not spend
  • 00:07:40
His very first night in a manger,
  • 00:07:42
the place where the animals eat.
  • 00:07:43
That's not quite a place where King ought to be."
  • 00:07:46
But indeed, there He was, just like God has said,
  • 00:07:48
a king, but no castle or comfortable bed.
  • 00:07:50
Just a baby, a small, tender child
  • 00:07:52
who was born, who like no one else ever
  • 00:07:54
    would save the whole world.
  • 00:07:58
    Now some magi out East
  • 00:07:59
    had seen a bright star
  • 00:08:00
    and decided to follow
  • 00:08:01
    no matter how far.
  • 00:08:02
So they came and they saw
  • 00:08:04
and they knelt and they gave
  • 00:08:05
    frankincense, myrrh, and gold
  • 00:08:06
    to the heavenly babe.
  • 00:08:07
As we get to the end of our story,
  • 00:08:09
    let's pause [clock tick]
  • 00:08:12
and remember the glorious part of this all
  • 00:08:14
is that God saved His people,
  • 00:08:16
    the ones that He loves
  • 00:08:17
with the greatest surprise that ever there was.
  • 00:08:19
It was small, at least a first glance,
  • 00:08:21
    just a baby.
  • 00:08:22
But pay close attention and maybe,
  • 00:08:23
just maybe you'll see what God plans
  • 00:08:25
    that astonishing rescue
  • 00:08:26
to ransom his people, and that includes you.
  • 00:08:29
    [beatboxing]
  • 00:08:42
Everybody knew the king was coming soon,
  • 00:08:47
    Everybody waited
  • 00:08:54
    When's he gonna come,
  • 00:08:58
When's he gonna make his move
  • 00:09:00
It's so long we've been waiting
  • 00:09:05
They were looking for a big man, big town
  • 00:09:08
    Surely knew his way around
  • 00:09:10
    a big crowd, gold crown
  • 00:09:12
Couldn't be defeated by anyone, anyone
  • 00:09:18
And they thought they would spot him easy
  • 00:09:21
It would be a piece of cake to recognize
  • 00:09:24
All the changes he was gonna make things better
  • 00:09:28
    Better, Better, Better
  • 00:09:31
Baby love crashed into the world,
  • 00:09:36
crashed in Baby love crashed into the world,
  • 00:09:43
    crashed in
  • 00:09:46
Everybody knew the king was coming soon,
  • 00:09:52
    Everybody waited.
  • 00:09:59
    We want a king now,
  • 00:10:02
to come turn things upside down
  • 00:10:05
    We've been oh so patient.
  • 00:10:10
They thought that he would be a big deal, big king
  • 00:10:13
    Everybody recognize him.
  • 00:10:15
    Bow down, take heed
  • 00:10:16
What they didn't realize is God does things differently
  • 00:10:23
So he didn't make a big splash, big thing
  • 00:10:26
Didn't. draw attention to the newborn, new king
  • 00:10:29
Slipped into the world like anyone, anyone.
  • 00:10:37
Baby love crashed into the world,
  • 00:10:41
    crashed in
  • 00:10:43
Baby love crashed into the world,
  • 00:10:48
    crashed in
  • 00:10:50
Oh the angels told the shepherds in the field
  • 00:10:56
And the star did glow and wise men did appear
  • 00:11:02
And then low and behold the people began to hear
  • 00:11:09
    And the king was known,
  • 00:11:13
    the king was here
  • 00:11:15
    Yes the king was known,
  • 00:11:19
    the king was here
  • 00:11:22
    They sang low and behold
  • 00:11:26
    Low and Behold
  • 00:11:29
    Low and Behold
  • 00:11:32
    Low and Behold
  • 00:11:40
Baby love crashed into the world,
  • 00:11:44
    crashed in
  • 00:11:46
Baby love crashed into the world,
  • 00:11:51
    crashed in
  • 00:11:52
Baby love crashed into the world,
  • 00:11:57
    crashed in
  • 00:11:59
Baby love crashed into the world,
  • 00:12:04
    crashed in
  • 00:12:06
Baby love crashed into the world,
  • 00:12:10
    crashed in, baby love
  • 00:12:43
    Come they told me-
  • 00:12:47
    Oh...Oh,Oh,Oh...Oh...Oh, Oh, Oh
  • 00:12:52
A new born king to see-
  • 00:12:56
    Oh...Oh,Oh,Oh...Oh...Oh, Oh, Oh
  • 00:13:00
    Our finest gifts we bring
  • 00:13:08
    To lay before the king
  • 00:13:15
Pa rum pum pum pum, Rum pum pum pum,
  • 00:13:19
    Rum pum pum pum
  • 00:13:23
    So to honor him
  • 00:13:30
    When we come
  • 00:13:48
    Little baby
  • 00:13:52
Oh Oh, Oh, Oh...Oh Oh Oh
  • 00:13:56
I am a poor boy too
  • 00:14:00
Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh...Oh Oh Oh
  • 00:14:04
I have no gift to bring
  • 00:14:12
That's fit to give our king
  • 00:14:18
Pa rum pum pum pum, Rum pum pum pum,
  • 00:14:23
    Rum pum pum pum
  • 00:14:27
    Shall I play for you,
  • 00:14:34
    on my drum
  • 00:14:58
They say you're the light that gives me life
  • 00:15:02
With drum in hand I've come tonight.
  • 00:15:06
What will you do with what I bring?
  • 00:15:10
    This is my beggars offering.
  • 00:15:14
They say you're the light that gives me life
  • 00:15:18
With drum in hand I've come tonight.
  • 00:15:22
What will you do with what I bring?
  • 00:15:26
    This is my beggars offering.
  • 00:15:32
    Then he smiled at me
  • 00:15:38
    And so I played
  • 00:15:46
    And so I played
  • 00:15:55
    On my drum
  • 00:16:02
    On my drum
  • 00:16:10
    On my drum
  • 00:16:20

  • 00:17:02
    - We love Christmas because it helps us feel.
  • 00:17:06
It's just a story that makes us feel good
  • 00:17:09
and man, do we need to feel good this year.
  • 00:17:12
But if we're not careful, we can miss
  • 00:17:15
a huge part of the Christmas story.
  • 00:17:17
The Christmas story is not all about
  • 00:17:19
    clean things and nice buildings
  • 00:17:23
    and beautiful trees.
  • 00:17:25
    It's actually a gritty story
  • 00:17:28
    with gritty people
  • 00:17:29
    taking place in an environment
  • 00:17:32
    very similar to this.
  • 00:17:35
It was in an environment like this
  • 00:17:37
where shepherds, who are a key part
  • 00:17:39
of the Christmas story, played their role,
  • 00:17:42
out in the fields taking care of sheep.
  • 00:17:47
Let's go ahead and read this classic text
  • 00:18:09
that comes to the Book of Luke 2.
  • 00:18:25
Angels show up and the first thing
  • 00:18:27
    they say is, "Fear not."
  • 00:18:29
Fear not. Why would they tell
  • 00:18:32
the shepherds to not be afraid?
  • 00:18:34
Why? Because the shepherds are afraid.
  • 00:18:37
    That's why.
  • 00:18:38
I don't know what your picture is of angels.
  • 00:18:41
    Angels are God's warriors.
  • 00:18:44
They remind us that there is
  • 00:18:46
a spiritual battle that's taking place.
  • 00:18:48
And when an angel shows up,
  • 00:18:50
    who is God's Navy SEALs,
  • 00:18:51
    they have heavenly armaments on,
  • 00:18:53
whatever they are, and they freak people out.
  • 00:18:55
They're going, "Oh, stop, stop. Don't be afraid."
  • 00:18:58
    Let me tell you something.
  • 00:18:59
If you ever saw an angel,
  • 00:19:00
you would not want to be touched by an angel.
  • 00:19:03
Shepherds are not expecting a touch with the heavens.
  • 00:19:07
In fact, they're not expecting much from anybody
  • 00:19:09
because shepherds are pretty unrespectable people
  • 00:19:12
    in that culture and time.
  • 00:19:13
They're dirty blue collar workers, so they believed.
  • 00:19:17
They had a dirty job of dealing with dirty sheep.
  • 00:19:20
And yet, God shows up to them.
  • 00:19:23
I find this incredibly encouraging because
  • 00:19:25
I've got years of dirt in my life.
  • 00:19:27
I've got vices in my life.
  • 00:19:29
    It's 2020, man, and I've had a harder run
  • 00:19:34
than I've ever had, you probably have to.
  • 00:19:36
It's been a dirty year for many of us.
  • 00:19:38
    Broken New Year's resolutions,
  • 00:19:41
    finances down,
  • 00:19:43
things you want to do not going well.
  • 00:19:45
    We've learned things about ourselves
  • 00:19:46
we might not have liked about ourselves
  • 00:19:48
as a result of all the changes
  • 00:19:49
    that have come our way.
  • 00:19:50
Many of us just feel more unworthy
  • 00:19:52
    maybe than we ever have.
  • 00:19:54
    And yet, angels come to
  • 00:19:56
these quote unquote, unworthy, dirty people
  • 00:19:59
to actually use them in the Christmas story.
  • 00:20:02
There is a place for you at Christmas
  • 00:20:04
    if your life isn't clean.
  • 00:20:05
Christmas is for those of us who are not clean
  • 00:20:08
because the idea of Christmas is that
  • 00:20:10
    there is a Savior coming.
  • 00:20:12
    Jesus is a Savior.
  • 00:20:17
Our bad history understanding of this
  • 00:20:19
is Jesus is in this nice, beautiful little barn
  • 00:20:22
probably Pottery Barn had a say in how to design it.
  • 00:20:25
    Everything is nice and beautiful.
  • 00:20:27
No, no, that's not what a manger is.
  • 00:20:28
    A manger isn't a cool barn.
  • 00:20:30
A manger is a feeding trough for cattle.
  • 00:20:34
Jesus is placed in a cow's cereal bowl.
  • 00:20:39
This is a dirty place for the Son of God to lie,
  • 00:20:42
    and yet He's lying there.
  • 00:20:44
This is a difficult time for Mary and Joseph.
  • 00:20:47
This is a freaky time for the shepherds.
  • 00:20:50
    And that's what Christmas is.
  • 00:20:52
    It brings us hope.
  • 00:20:53
    It brings us purpose.
  • 00:20:55
It brings us a vision of the future.
  • 00:20:58
    But it does that because
  • 00:20:59
our current circumstances might not be ideal.
  • 00:21:03
Maybe never before have we needed Christmas
  • 00:21:07
as much as we need it now,
  • 00:21:08
    and specifically, the original Christmas
  • 00:21:11
for people who have issues, like you and I.
  • 00:22:00
    - Do not be afraid.
  • 00:22:02
    I bring you good news
  • 00:22:03
that will cause great joy for all the people.
  • 00:22:06
Today, in the town of David,
  • 00:22:07
a Savior has been born to you.
  • 00:22:09
He is the Messiah, the Lord.
  • 00:22:12
This will be a sign to you:
  • 00:22:13
You will find a baby wrapped in clothes
  • 00:22:16
    and lying in a manger.
  • 00:22:27
    O come
  • 00:22:31
    O come
  • 00:22:35
    O come
  • 00:22:37
O come let us adore him
  • 00:22:43
    O come
  • 00:22:47
    O come
  • 00:22:51
    O come
  • 00:22:53
O come let us adore him
  • 00:22:58
    O come all ye faithful
  • 00:23:02
    Joyful and triumphant
  • 00:23:05
O come ye oh come ye To Bethlehem
  • 00:23:13
    Come and behold him
  • 00:23:17
    Born the king of angels
  • 00:23:21
O come ye oh come ye To Bethlehem
  • 00:23:29
    Come O come
  • 00:23:32
    Come
  • 00:23:35
    O come
  • 00:23:39
O come, O come let us adore him
  • 00:23:46
    Yea, Lord, we greet thee
  • 00:23:50
    born this happy morning,
  • 00:23:54
O come ye oh come ye To Bethlehem
  • 00:24:01
    Word of the Father,
  • 00:24:05
    now in flesh appearing
  • 00:24:10
    O come ye,
  • 00:24:11
    O come ye to Bethlehem
  • 00:24:19
    O come
  • 00:24:23
    O come
  • 00:24:27
    O come
  • 00:24:29
O come let us adore Him
  • 00:24:35
    O come
  • 00:24:43
    O come
  • 00:24:45
O come let us adore Him
  • 00:24:50
Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ the Lord
  • 00:24:57
Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ the Lord
  • 00:25:11
    - Hey, I'm here with Lecrae. Welcome.
  • 00:25:13
    - Appreciate you. Thanks for having me.
  • 00:25:15
    - Yeah, it was great to have you.
  • 00:25:16
Got to know a little this last year,
  • 00:25:17
so to have you here as a part of the Christmas special
  • 00:25:20
is a big, big deal. In fact, you're a big deal.
  • 00:25:22
    - Oh, man.
  • 00:25:23
    Grammy Award winning recording artist,
  • 00:25:26
    songwriter, author, performer, dog groomer.
  • 00:25:30
I mean, I love these things that you can do
  • 00:25:32
and yet you're here with us.
  • 00:25:33
And I'm excited to spend the day with you.
  • 00:25:35
    - I appreciate it.
  • 00:25:36
I'm most proud about my dog grooming skills.
  • 00:25:39
    - Just so we can be a little gritty
  • 00:25:41
and not just nice, feel good Christmas.
  • 00:25:44
I think it's important to recognize that
  • 00:25:47
the first Christmas was born in pain and difficulty.
  • 00:25:52
And it might be more true to Christmas form
  • 00:25:54
if we're struggling to some degree.
  • 00:25:56
    - I definitely want to walk people through
  • 00:25:58
being able to navigate that pain.
  • 00:25:59
A lot of times we love Jeremiah 29:11:
  • 00:26:03
I know the plans I have for you,
  • 00:26:04
plans for a future and a hope.
  • 00:26:06
But that promise was connected to pain.
  • 00:26:08
    Those people were in captivity
  • 00:26:10
and so they needed to know that God had
  • 00:26:12
a promise for them on the other side of that.
  • 00:26:14
And I think that's what we have to know as well,
  • 00:26:16
is that as we're going through pain,
  • 00:26:18
that there's a promise we can hold on to.
  • 00:26:20
    And Christmas is a reminder.
  • 00:26:22
You know? You were just talking about, it's like,
  • 00:26:24
"Hey, this is a tough time,
  • 00:26:25
but this is the Savior of the world.
  • 00:26:27
    Hold on onto that promise."
  • 00:26:28
    - We're more divided than we've ever been as a country.
  • 00:26:31
What is it, though, about Christmas
  • 00:26:34
that gives you hope this year?
  • 00:26:35
    - You've got these wise men who've traveled for miles
  • 00:26:39
because of a prophecy that they've heard.
  • 00:26:42
    And these are not Jews,
  • 00:26:43
but they're coming to see the Jewish Savior.
  • 00:26:47
It's not just one ethnic group.
  • 00:26:49
It's not just one economic group.
  • 00:26:51
It's not just male or female.
  • 00:26:53
It's a collective coming to worship the King.
  • 00:26:56
And that's what Christmas is about.
  • 00:26:58
It's about us seeing the Savior.
  • 00:27:00
And the Savior brings us together and unites us.
  • 00:27:04
    - That's good.
  • 00:27:05
Well, why don't we get to the good stuff?
  • 00:27:08
The good stuff is this man singing.
  • 00:27:10
Let's go do that right now.
  • 00:30:05
    - God often comes to us at the least expected time
  • 00:30:09
and even the least convenient time.
  • 00:30:12
The shepherds have got a job to do.
  • 00:30:14
They've got an agenda for their day
  • 00:30:16
and now everything is thrown up in the air
  • 00:30:18
and they have got to move.
  • 00:30:21
You and I have to move right now.
  • 00:30:24
You might say, "How in the world would I do that
  • 00:30:26
    during quarantine and worldwide pandemic?"
  • 00:30:28
There's always something you can do
  • 00:30:30
to get closer to God and be responsive to His voice.
  • 00:30:33
It could be a relationship you need to reach out to.
  • 00:30:36
It could be doubling down on your budget.
  • 00:30:39
It could be doubling down and evaluating
  • 00:30:42
your prayer life, how you're reading the scriptures,
  • 00:30:45
    planning for your future.
  • 00:30:47
There's all kinds of things that you can do.
  • 00:30:49
But the key thing is when God comes to you,
  • 00:30:52
    you've got to move because
  • 00:30:53
the next thing is the right thing
  • 00:30:56
and it's a place that you need to move to right now.
  • 00:30:58
And it's the place where the shepherds were moving to.
  • 00:31:32
It says that the shepherds are in wonder.
  • 00:31:35
Well, no wonder they're in wonder.
  • 00:31:37
    They're getting encounters with angels,
  • 00:31:41
they're seeing God in the flesh.
  • 00:31:44
    Crazy things are happening.
  • 00:31:47
I love that they're in wonder.
  • 00:31:48
And I grieve that in our culture.
  • 00:31:49
    We've lost the wonder.
  • 00:31:52
We've lost the mystery and the ah.
  • 00:31:55
In this place, I'm in wonder over this place,
  • 00:31:58
even though I understand it's happened
  • 00:31:59
over long periods of time with wind coming through
  • 00:32:01
and erosion and all that kind of stuff,
  • 00:32:04
    there's still a wonder.
  • 00:32:06
We can Google just about anything we want
  • 00:32:08
and we can find answers immediately
  • 00:32:10
and we think we're know it alls.
  • 00:32:12
And therefore we think we know all about God,
  • 00:32:14
    but we don't.
  • 00:32:15
    There's a mystery about it.
  • 00:32:22
The Christmas story, we can't fully figure it out.
  • 00:32:25
    We can't fully explain it.
  • 00:32:26
There's things going on that are beyond human reason.
  • 00:32:29
If God was to come down to the world
  • 00:32:32
and take on flesh, we should expect
  • 00:32:34
    to not understand everything.
  • 00:32:35
We should expect to be blown away
  • 00:32:37
by things that we don't understand.
  • 00:32:38
And I love that about Christmas.
  • 00:32:40
I love that about the story of God.
  • 00:32:43
The shepherds not only are in wonder,
  • 00:32:45
but when they see this they realize this is good news
  • 00:32:47
and they have to go share this good news.
  • 00:32:49
That's called the gospel, sharing of the good news.
  • 00:32:53
It's what we're doing right now
  • 00:32:54
and it's what all of us need to do
  • 00:32:56
in the midst of our cynical world
  • 00:32:57
is share the good news of Jesus.
  • 00:33:09
The good news is that there is a Savior coming for us.
  • 00:33:14
The Jews were looking for a savior.
  • 00:33:16
Now they were looking for a different kind of savior.
  • 00:33:18
They were looking for a savior
  • 00:33:20
to save them from political oppression.
  • 00:33:24
That would have been the shepherds, who were Jews,
  • 00:33:26
it would have been Mary and Joseph,
  • 00:33:28
it would have been everybody else
  • 00:33:29
    who was under Roman oppression.
  • 00:33:31
They wanted someone to come and crush them.
  • 00:33:34
Does it sound a little familiar to you?
  • 00:33:36
Here in our culture, everyone's wanting
  • 00:33:38
someone to come and crush the people
  • 00:33:40
    who think differently than us,
  • 00:33:41
crush the people who vote differently than us.
  • 00:33:43
God's not interested in our political situation so much.
  • 00:33:47
    He's interested in our hearts.
  • 00:33:50
He's interested in us having a relationship with Him.
  • 00:33:54
When Jesus comes to save us
  • 00:33:58
and to unite us to God,
  • 00:33:59
to eliminate the barrier of sin
  • 00:34:01
and our rebelliousness that unites us to God,
  • 00:34:04
    a crazy thing happens.
  • 00:34:05
As we united to God, we get united
  • 00:34:09
with all different kinds of people,
  • 00:34:11
    from all different cultures,
  • 00:34:12
    with actually all different kinds
  • 00:34:14
    of political ideologies.
  • 00:34:15
And there is a unity that comes.
  • 00:34:17
There's a harmony that comes because
  • 00:34:19
    we've been united with God.
  • 00:34:21
Have we ever need that more than we need it right now?
  • 00:34:24
Our culture is so divided, right/left,
  • 00:34:27
    divided racially, divided economically.
  • 00:34:30
And Christmas can be a message of unity,
  • 00:34:33
    people coming together in oneness,
  • 00:34:36
sharing a common belief that God loves me
  • 00:34:40
and that Jesus has died for me.
  • 00:34:42
And when this happens, you actually become a light.
  • 00:34:47
Jesus said of Himself one time
  • 00:34:48
that He is the light of the world.
  • 00:34:50
    When we become like Him,
  • 00:34:52
when He comes inside of our lives,
  • 00:34:54
    we actually become lights
  • 00:34:55
and we start reverberating around all of the cultures,
  • 00:34:59
all the communities in which we reside.
  • 00:35:02
Where are the light bearers in our divided culture today?
  • 00:35:06
    Where are they?
  • 00:35:08
Many of them are right now
  • 00:35:10
with us in this Christmas experience.
  • 00:35:13
And God wants you and I to be unifiers,
  • 00:35:16
to be people who bring good news,
  • 00:35:18
who bring the light of Jesus.
  • 00:35:22
    Maybe you've experienced His warmth
  • 00:35:26
just now in the midst of our experience together.
  • 00:35:29
Maybe an angel has landed on your shoulder.
  • 00:35:33
And I don't mean just figuratively,
  • 00:35:34
    I mean maybe literally.
  • 00:35:36
    Maybe you're feeling something
  • 00:35:37
    that you haven't felt before.
  • 00:35:39
Maybe you're getting caught up in the One.
  • 00:35:41
I just want to tell you,
  • 00:35:42
that's not because of the production.
  • 00:35:44
I believe that's because Jesus still comes
  • 00:35:48
    and reaches and saves people.
  • 00:35:51
    Maybe now is your time.
  • 00:35:53
You could say a prayer, one which I've said
  • 00:35:56
and millions and millions of others have said.
  • 00:35:58
    It goes something like this.
  • 00:35:59
If you want Him in your life,
  • 00:36:01
if you want Him to save you,
  • 00:36:02
    if you want His warmth,
  • 00:36:04
if you want the unity that He brings,
  • 00:36:07
you could just pray something like this.
  • 00:36:09
Jesus, I want You in my life and in my heart.
  • 00:36:14
I ask You forgive me for my sin.
  • 00:36:19
I ask that You would fill me right now with Your Spirit.
  • 00:36:24
    I want Your good news.
  • 00:36:27
As best I can, I will follow You the rest of my life.
  • 00:36:33
    Amen.
  • 00:36:36
When a prayer like that gets prayed
  • 00:36:39
and when a life like yours starts
  • 00:36:41
going in the direction of Jesus,
  • 00:36:44
Christmas has come to this world
  • 00:36:46
and it's come to your life.

She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
  • 00:40:46
She's an incredible songwriter and author.
  • 00:40:48
When I told my kids I was meeting you
  • 00:40:50
and you we're going to be on our Christmas special,
  • 00:40:52
my kids said, "My gosh, Amy Grant, she owns Christmas."
  • 00:40:55
    Amy Grant, welcome.
  • 00:40:57
    - Thank you. It's great to be here.
  • 00:41:00
    - So let's play a game. - Okay.
  • 00:41:01
    - I say a line and then you sing the next line.
  • 00:41:05
Are you good enough to do that?
  • 00:41:07
    - I used to be. I don't know.
  • 00:41:08
    - Okay, all right. Here we go. Let's try it.
  • 00:41:11
Oh, I know there's more snow up in Colorado...
  • 00:41:14
    - (singing) than my roof will ever see,
  • 00:41:17
    but a tender Tennessee Christmas.
  • 00:41:20
    - Oh, that's so good. All right.
  • 00:41:22
One more question, because I've always wondered
  • 00:41:24
    your song Oh, Sleigh Ride.
  • 00:41:27
There's a line in that song,
  • 00:41:30
every time I listen to it,
  • 00:41:31
I'm trying to figure out what's going on.
  • 00:41:33
You know what that line is? - Yoo-hoo.
  • 00:41:35
    - Yes. What is that? What --
  • 00:41:37
Tell me the story behind yoo-hoo.
  • 00:41:38
    - It was, yeah, I just --
  • 00:41:42
You know, I had a sled.
  • 00:41:44
    We all played outside.
  • 00:41:45
    - And did that just spontaneously come out
  • 00:41:47
in the recording studio, that yoo-hoo?
  • 00:41:48
    Or did you --
  • 00:41:49
Did you make that up ahead of time to do that?
  • 00:41:52
    - I did, yeah, just breathing and, you know, yoo-hoo.
  • 00:41:55
I grew up in a neighborhood with a whole bunch of kids.
  • 00:41:58
    - You went through a major health crisis this last year.
  • 00:42:02
    Tell us about that.
  • 00:42:03
    - I did. I had open heart surgery in June.
  • 00:42:05
And I felt fine all the way up until then.
  • 00:42:08
And after recovery, I was fine.
  • 00:42:09
They just randomly discovered a birth defect and --
  • 00:42:13
    - Open heart like, crack your sternum?
  • 00:42:15
    - You know what I call it? Tattooed cleavage.
  • 00:42:20
    Yeah, I know. I went --
  • 00:42:22
I went -- here's the crazy thing is,
  • 00:42:25
like I've always had tons of energy
  • 00:42:27
    and my husband does --
  • 00:42:28
He doesn't really have an active lifestyle.
  • 00:42:30
And so he went to the doctor
  • 00:42:32
and so he did all these tests.
  • 00:42:33
I'm like holding his hand. "You're going to be OK."
  • 00:42:37
And the doctor said, "Your heart's great.
  • 00:42:39
You need to exercise, eat better."
  • 00:42:41
And then he looked at me and he said,
  • 00:42:42
    "We should check you out."
  • 00:42:43
And I was like, (scoffs) "Me?"
  • 00:42:45
And then they ran a test and he was like,
  • 00:42:47
"You're going to be dead in two years
  • 00:42:48
    if we don't do this."
  • 00:42:49
    - Oh, wow.
  • 00:42:51
    - Like, he just felt compelled to say
  • 00:42:54
to the person he was not seeing, he was not my doctor.
  • 00:42:57
My scar reminds me if I ever have
  • 00:43:01
an impulse that's not on my agenda,
  • 00:43:05
what if it could affect somebody's life?
  • 00:43:09
Call that person, hey, think about so-and-so,
  • 00:43:12
reach out to so-and-so, whatever it is,
  • 00:43:14
    turn left instead of right.
  • 00:43:15
I mean, what if the Spirit really works that way?
  • 00:43:17
Just any time something kind of
  • 00:43:19
floats across your radar and you're like,
  • 00:43:20
    "Why don't we...?" - Yeah.
  • 00:43:22
    - You know, because for me, it was life and death.
  • 00:43:25
    - This year's obviously been different.
  • 00:43:27
What's your hope for unity this Christmas?
  • 00:43:29
    - I read an article one time that said
  • 00:43:30
it takes 3 seconds to actually acknowledge another person.
  • 00:43:34
That's what I want to do.
  • 00:43:35
There's so much fracture in the world
  • 00:43:37
and we don't know everybody's woundedness,
  • 00:43:40
    Everybody's disappointment, all of that.
  • 00:43:42
But if we could just approach
  • 00:43:45
every circle we walk into, especially strangers.
  • 00:43:49
And if you're looking to find a common --
  • 00:43:53
    - Yeah. - --We're both human.
  • 00:43:54
I feel like the best community is created
  • 00:43:57
    when there's a common purpose.
  • 00:43:59
And that might even just like be to have fun.
  • 00:44:01
Six summers ago, I started hosting a day camp,
  • 00:44:03
    two weeks at our farm.
  • 00:44:05
And it's just a melting pot
  • 00:44:08
of all different ethnic, racial backgrounds,
  • 00:44:13
a place that would look like heaven.
  • 00:44:15
In fact, the first summer we had that
  • 00:44:16
is when the shooting happened in North Charleston.
  • 00:44:19
And one of the counselors at the camp,
  • 00:44:21
his grandparents went to that church.
  • 00:44:25
And I just thought, "Oh, my gosh,
  • 00:44:26
this camp is like our living prayer for reconciliation."
  • 00:44:30
    - So I'm so excited to hear you perform.
  • 00:44:32
Tell us what you're going to do for us right now.
  • 00:44:34
    - I'm going to do a song called Breath of Heaven.
  • 00:44:36
I love this song because it's telling the story of Mary,
  • 00:44:39
but also it's just such an honest prayer,
  • 00:44:44
    especially this year.
  • 00:44:45
It almost feels like I'm singing this
  • 00:44:48
as a prayer for all of us.
  • 00:44:49
    - It's a good word.
  • 00:44:50
We all need God's breath to hold us together.
  • 00:44:52
So why don't we do that right now?
  • 00:45:04
    - I wrote these lyrics
  • 00:45:06
imagining what Mary must have felt like
  • 00:45:10
as the birth of Jesus approached,
  • 00:45:12
    terrified, uncertain.
  • 00:45:16
Kind of like we feel right now.
  • 00:53:17
Part of what makes Christmas special to us
  • 00:53:20
    are the traditions,
  • 00:53:21
the things we do year after year after year.
  • 00:53:23
For many of us, we sing Silent Night every year.
  • 00:53:25
Maybe you go to a church building
  • 00:53:27
    and they sing Silent Night.
  • 00:53:29
    Maybe they have candles
  • 00:53:30
and everyone's holding up the candle
  • 00:53:32
    in that dark auditorium.
  • 00:53:34
We want to do that right now.
  • 00:53:35
Why don't you go some place in your house,
  • 00:53:37
get yourself a candle, get a book of matches, get lighter.
  • 00:53:41
We're going to do this together.
  • 00:53:43
This signifies how Jesus is the light of the world.
  • 00:53:46
He comes into dark times and dark places,
  • 00:53:51
like us and our country right now in 2020.
  • 00:53:54
    And yet he illuminates things.
  • 00:53:57
    He warms things.
  • 00:53:58
And as we all hold these candles,
  • 00:54:00
if it's just you and your house,
  • 00:54:01
    just please do it still.
  • 00:54:02
    You'll be standing in unity
  • 00:54:04
with everybody all across the country
  • 00:54:07
that's saying to God, "God, I want to be united
  • 00:54:12
under your banner and I want Christmas this year."
  • 00:54:16
    Let's do this together.
  • 00:59:13
    - Thanks for being with us for this Christmas Special.
