The Joy of Living for the Long Haul

This week, we’re talking about the long haul and legacy. Take a moment and think of legacies you’re connected to. It could be a family, a business, a church, or the best shuffleboard squad on the block. Each person share, and be sure to include a story of how you’re connected.

To get beyond short term thinking and into legacy thinking, we have to move past a culture that values immediate satisfaction. Think back over your week. Share some examples of where you made decisions that had zero impact on your legacy. Like buying something now cause it felt good. Or avoiding a tough conversation. (Don’t worry. We all do it.) Why do you think you made those calls?

Whoever had the best story in question 2, read James 4:14 out loud. Go ahead and read it a couple times–it’s short. What do you feel when you read this verse? What does it make you think about legacy? Everyone share.

We all want to build something lasting, and we just read we’ve got a time limit. Yet we’re still left with a basic question: how? What’s the model? How do you go about building that “thing bigger than yourself?” What role does God have in all this?

Spend a few moments thinking about the type of legacy you want to leave. What would it look like in 1 year, 10 years, 50 years, and 100 years? Each person share that vision. And then share something you could do (or not do) today to start building it.

Once everyone has shared, take a moment and pray for each other before you end the group. You’ve shared areas where you have short term thinking, discussed models for legacy, and declared where you want to have impact in 100 years. That’s a big deal. Bless each other. Then come back next week.
