It’s All About The Heart | The Blessed Life: Week 1

It’s a lot easier to be a cheerful getter than a cheerful giver. We know God wants a cheerful giver but it doesn’t always come naturally to us. Real generosity is all about the condition of our hearts.

1
00:00:00.690 --> 00:00:01.710
Well, welcome to church.

2
00:00:01.740 --> 00:00:04.140
We're so glad to have you at Crossroads today.

3
00:00:04.440 --> 00:00:06.350
That's right. You might be thinking at Crossroads?

4
00:00:06.360 --> 00:00:08.130
This doesn't look like a normal Crossroads.

5
00:00:08.130 --> 00:00:10.620
Or I'm sitting in my living room or my car.

6
00:00:10.920 --> 00:00:14.930
The great thing is Crossroads can go with you anywhere you might be.

7
00:00:14.940 --> 00:00:19.380
And today I'm in my very own kitchen.

8
00:00:19.380 --> 00:00:21.930
I'm in my home with actually my group

9
00:00:21.930 --> 00:00:23.280
who you're gonna meet a little bit later.

10
00:00:23.580 --> 00:00:26.520
We're in a brand new series called The Blessed Life.

11
00:00:26.880 --> 00:00:29.870
I'm really excited for what's to come in this series.

12
00:00:30.140 --> 00:00:31.530
But before we get into that,

13
00:00:31.530 --> 00:00:33.660
we're going to spend some time worshipping together.

14
00:00:34.080 --> 00:00:38.250
And worship is one of the ways that we actually get to declare to God

15
00:00:38.250 --> 00:00:41.610
that we're thankful for all that He's done in our lives.

16
00:00:41.610 --> 00:00:43.140
We're thankful for what He's doing right now.

17
00:00:43.140 --> 00:00:46.710
We're thankful for what we hope that He does later.

18
00:00:46.800 --> 00:00:48.960
And so if you believe these words,

19
00:00:48.960 --> 00:00:50.870
we want you to sing them wholeheartedly.

20
00:00:51.120 --> 00:00:53.880
If you don't believe these words totally, that's OK.

21
00:00:54.180 --> 00:00:59.520
But maybe you ask God to help you believe these
words a little bit deeper as we go into worship.

22
00:00:59.520 --> 00:00:59.530
.

23
00:04:52.010 --> 00:04:53.480
We believe those words.

24
00:04:54.500 --> 00:04:57.470
We do not sing songs around here that we don't believe.

25
00:04:58.660 --> 00:05:00.710
And you may be in here and you may read those words

26
00:05:00.710 --> 00:05:01.700
and go, I don't believe that.

27
00:05:01.700 --> 00:05:03.350
Man, I'm glad you're here.

28
00:05:04.040 --> 00:05:07.850
But the reason you see people around you singing

29
00:05:07.850 --> 00:05:10.670
and you see hands in the air is because

30
00:05:10.670 --> 00:05:14.360
we believe that it's all about Him,

31
00:05:14.360 --> 00:05:16.430
that He has life in His hands.

32
00:05:16.430 --> 00:05:20.330
We believe in the powerful person of Jesus.

33
00:05:21.260 --> 00:05:23.420
We believe it's Him that overcomes.

34
00:05:23.420 --> 00:05:24.530
It's all by His power.

35
00:05:24.530 --> 00:05:25.940
It's not about me.

36
00:05:25.940 --> 00:05:29.750
It's all about Him, His power and His grace.

37
00:05:31.310 --> 00:05:34.730
So we wrote a song a little bit ago

38
00:05:34.730 --> 00:05:37.400
as a way for us as a community of people

39
00:05:37.400 --> 00:05:43.030
to remind us to never forget that it is about Him and His power.

40
00:05:44.100 --> 00:05:45.520
So I'm going to teach it to you.

41
00:05:47.620 --> 00:05:48.100
.

42
00:10:47.430 --> 00:10:48.240
That's who You are, God.

43
00:10:49.950 --> 00:10:51.870
We're not saying anything new to You.

44
00:10:54.420 --> 00:10:56.050
You know that You have life in Your hands.

45
00:10:57.210 --> 00:11:01.680
You know, more than anybody, more than I could ever speak

46
00:11:01.680 --> 00:11:04.620
how much more You want for us,

47
00:11:04.620 --> 00:11:07.500
how much freedom You want for us,

48
00:11:07.500 --> 00:11:10.320
how much you hold in your hands

49
00:11:10.320 --> 00:11:15.720
because You are life, the author, creator of life.

50
00:11:17.580 --> 00:11:20.070
So I sing to You because I've experienced You,

51
00:11:20.070 --> 00:11:25.160
because I know and I've seen You overcome in my life.

52
00:11:25.190 --> 00:11:30.410
Thank you, Lord. All gratitude and praise belong to You.

53
00:11:32.830 --> 00:11:36.770
I pray all this because of who I've seen You to be in Jesus.

54
00:11:36.770 --> 00:11:37.710
Amen.

55
00:11:39.430 --> 00:11:40.660
Thanks for singing with us today.

56
00:11:46.560 --> 00:11:46.670
[applause]

57
00:11:46.670 --> 00:11:49.050
One of the things we deeply care about around here

58
00:11:49.050 --> 00:11:51.750
is relationship, connection to one another,

59
00:11:51.750 --> 00:11:54.070
so turn around, greet somebody around here,

60
00:11:54.070 --> 00:11:55.200
give them a handshake and a smile today.

61
00:12:11.080 --> 00:12:13.360
Well, we do care about connection around here,

62
00:12:13.360 --> 00:12:15.610
and so we've created a great tool that helps

63
00:12:15.610 --> 00:12:18.970
you and I connect to one another and connect to God.

64
00:12:18.970 --> 00:12:20.800
And it's called the Crossroads Anywhere App.

65
00:12:26.380 --> 00:12:28.070
- This is the Crossroads Anywhere App.

66
00:12:28.990 --> 00:12:30.610
It's not just any other app.

67
00:12:31.090 --> 00:12:33.650
It's the weekend experience wherever you go.

68
00:12:39.520 --> 00:12:41.710
It's relevant articles to you

69
00:12:41.710 --> 00:12:43.560
so you can be the smart guy at the party for once.

70
00:12:46.330 --> 00:12:50.350
It's asking for prayer because life can get a little tough sometimes.

71
00:12:56.630 --> 00:12:59.330
It's spiritual growth without a bunch of hoops to jump through.

72
00:13:00.490 --> 00:13:01.700
The Crossroads Anywhere App:.

73
00:13:02.750 --> 00:13:05.660
It's you connecting with people and with God.

74
00:13:06.770 --> 00:13:07.790
Download it now.

75
00:13:12.420 --> 00:13:16.350
- Well, hey, I'm Lena and I were in my house right now.

76
00:13:16.350 --> 00:13:18.360
I'm actually in my last journey group meeting.

77
00:13:18.780 --> 00:13:21.000
My son Louie playing with my ear.

78
00:13:21.030 --> 00:13:24.300
He's a little sleepy by the time we meet as a group.

79
00:13:24.300 --> 00:13:27.810
But we've had a really, really good experience with the Play & Purpose Journey.

80
00:13:27.840 --> 00:13:29.160
It's been fun.

81
00:13:29.190 --> 00:13:30.420
It's been challenging.

82
00:13:30.620 --> 00:13:33.090
And it's always good to have a regular rhythm

83
00:13:33.090 --> 00:13:34.570
of getting together with some of my friends.

84
00:13:34.620 --> 00:13:36.800
So I would love for you to meet some of my friends

85
00:13:36.800 --> 00:13:39.570
who've been in my group for the Play & Purpose Journey

86
00:13:39.570 --> 00:13:41.940
and hear a little bit about their experience.

87
00:13:41.970 --> 00:13:45.270
So what have you guys thought about the journey thus far?

88
00:13:45.870 --> 00:13:49.680
- It's been really interesting, a very unique take on small groups as a whole.

89
00:13:49.970 --> 00:13:51.690
- Yeah, different than you thought it might be?

90
00:13:51.750 --> 00:13:54.380
- Much different than what I thought it would be.

91
00:13:54.480 --> 00:13:55.020
- In a good way?

92
00:13:55.100 --> 00:13:56.220
- Yeah, really good way, actually.

93
00:13:56.310 --> 00:13:57.090
Yeah. Very unique.

94
00:13:57.120 --> 00:13:58.580
I liked the different take in the approach to it.

95
00:13:59.040 --> 00:14:01.650
- That's great. Megan, how was it for you?

96
00:14:02.190 --> 00:14:02.760
- I've loved it.

97
00:14:02.790 --> 00:14:05.130
So we just got married back in July,

98
00:14:05.130 --> 00:14:07.950
so it's been our first group together as a married couple

99
00:14:07.950 --> 00:14:10.410
with a group of other young married people, which I really enjoy.

100
00:14:10.760 --> 00:14:12.810
We're all kind of in the same life stage

101
00:14:12.810 --> 00:14:15.800
and I'm learning from all the little babes that are around.

102
00:14:15.800 --> 00:14:17.520
And so it's been a really fun experience for sure.

103
00:14:17.790 --> 00:14:20.940
- That's great. Anything -- What's your big thing coming out of the Journey?

104
00:14:21.300 --> 00:14:22.810
- So I really needed to work on play.

105
00:14:22.950 --> 00:14:26.190
And I have decided I'm going to start learning how to drum.

106
00:14:26.280 --> 00:14:27.480
So I just got my first drum set.

107
00:14:27.560 --> 00:14:28.200
I'm really excited.

108
00:14:28.200 --> 00:14:28.210
[laughter]

109
00:14:29.610 --> 00:14:30.520
- Wades, how about you guys?

110
00:14:30.540 --> 00:14:33.000
How is being in a group been impactful for you?

111
00:14:33.930 --> 00:14:38.970
- Being in a group has been impactful for us because

112
00:14:38.970 --> 00:14:40.710
we have been in our critical moments

113
00:14:40.710 --> 00:14:43.410
or moments where we've needed community the most.

114
00:14:43.710 --> 00:14:44.920
You guys have supported us.

115
00:14:44.970 --> 00:14:48.050
You guys have laughed with us when we need it.

116
00:14:48.340 --> 00:14:54.600
And being a new mom, it's just been good to partner with somebody.

117
00:14:54.920 --> 00:14:58.650
- Well, hey, you know, if you had a great group experience

118
00:14:58.650 --> 00:15:04.860
or maybe you've got some friends that you want to experience the church with,

119
00:15:04.860 --> 00:15:06.540
you can continue to meet as a group.

120
00:15:06.540 --> 00:15:08.520
You can start a new group.

121
00:15:08.520 --> 00:15:11.430
And we've got a new feature in the Crossroads Anywhere App

122
00:15:11.430 --> 00:15:15.570
where you can subscribe to weekend prompts in the chat feature.

123
00:15:15.810 --> 00:15:18.380
Just like we had for the Play & Purpose Journey,

124
00:15:18.380 --> 00:15:22.800
there's actually going to be prompts after every single weekend experience

125
00:15:22.800 --> 00:15:24.660
to give you some conversation starters.

126
00:15:24.660 --> 00:15:25.980
So get a group of friends together.

127
00:15:26.010 --> 00:15:27.990
Keep meeting with your Journey group.

128
00:15:27.990 --> 00:15:31.140
Have dinner or lunch or breakfast once a week

129
00:15:31.140 --> 00:15:34.680
and just talk through what you experienced over the week

130
00:15:34.680 --> 00:15:36.750
and through this weekend message.

131
00:15:37.080 --> 00:15:40.170
And I think it's gonna be really, really good for us

132
00:15:40.170 --> 00:15:43.170
to have some good intentional conversations

133
00:15:43.170 --> 00:15:45.390
and also just continue to have fun together.

134
00:15:45.390 --> 00:15:47.380
So you don't wanna miss that. Right, Louie?

135
00:15:47.380 --> 00:15:50.970
(Louie mumbles) Yes, exactly.

136
00:15:52.920 --> 00:15:56.280
And so right now we're actually going to get an opportunity to be generous.

137
00:15:56.310 --> 00:15:59.640
If you want to give, you can head to Crossroads.net/give.

138
00:15:59.910 --> 00:16:03.960
And I actually want my friend Josh to tell you about why he gives.

139
00:16:03.960 --> 00:16:05.700
- I give because it's what God calls us to do.

140
00:16:05.890 --> 00:16:07.080
Not only does He call us to do it,

141
00:16:07.080 --> 00:16:08.730
it's the one thing in the Bible He says,

142
00:16:08.730 --> 00:16:10.470
"Put me to the test on it.

143
00:16:10.470 --> 00:16:12.270
Put me in the test and trust Me

144
00:16:12.270 --> 00:16:14.110
with what I've already given you and give it back to Me."

145
00:16:14.150 --> 00:16:16.600
And for me, I give because I believe that.

146
00:16:16.600 --> 00:16:17.970
And I've actually experienced that this week.

147
00:16:18.000 --> 00:16:21.240
We've had some car trouble and we had a big repair we have to do on our car.

148
00:16:21.370 --> 00:16:23.880
And I was worried about how much was going to cost to get that done.

149
00:16:24.210 --> 00:16:26.680
A literally yesterday someone heard me talking about it

150
00:16:26.680 --> 00:16:29.220
and Venmo-ed me a bunch of money to get my car repaired.

151
00:16:29.520 --> 00:16:31.140
That just happened yesterday for us.

152
00:16:31.210 --> 00:16:33.700
And God says put it to the test, and He's true in that.

153
00:16:33.740 --> 00:16:36.270
So I trust Him with my money and I give because of that.

154
00:16:37.050 --> 00:16:37.740
- That's awesome.

155
00:16:37.860 --> 00:16:41.040
So you can head to Crossroads.net/give

156
00:16:41.370 --> 00:16:44.340
and give right now and put God to the test.

157
00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:48.180
So it's been fun to be with my group in the midst of the Play & Purpose Journey.

158
00:16:48.540 --> 00:16:52.320
Let's see a little recap of what went on in the midst of this Journey.

159
00:18:00.210 --> 00:18:03.530
Man, that is good stuff.

160
00:18:03.540 --> 00:18:06.420
I am excited for how Play & Purpose went.

161
00:18:06.430 --> 00:18:08.370
How many of us are excited for how Play & Purpose went?

162
00:18:08.400 --> 00:18:08.880
Yes.

163
00:18:09.780 --> 00:18:15.210
And I am just excited for what's going to happen the next six weeks.

164
00:18:15.750 --> 00:18:19.770
We're starting a new series called The Blessed Life.

165
00:18:19.800 --> 00:18:21.090
We're going to talk.

166
00:18:21.330 --> 00:18:24.360
We're going to talk about generosity.

167
00:18:25.110 --> 00:18:35.320
Now I know whenever the words generosity come up in church,

168
00:18:35.320 --> 00:18:39.520
we have things that we're afraid of,

169
00:18:39.520 --> 00:18:44.050
things that were paranoid about,

170
00:18:44.050 --> 00:18:48.910
things that we clench things around.

171
00:18:50.380 --> 00:18:55.090
So I just want to be real clear on this: This is not a campaign.

172
00:19:00.510 --> 00:19:07.140
Never in this series ever will you be asked
and encouraged to fill out a commitment card.

173
00:19:12.690 --> 00:19:17.220
Fact: I'm never going to have my own personal plane.

174
00:19:22.780 --> 00:19:29.610
I am giving this information and I am not working on commission.

175
00:19:31.740 --> 00:19:35.880
So just relax your sphincter.

176
00:19:39.480 --> 00:19:40.970
Not release your sphincter.

177
00:19:40.970 --> 00:19:41.340
[laughter]

178
00:19:43.170 --> 00:19:45.570
Relax your sphincter.

179
00:19:46.500 --> 00:19:53.160
Just want to calm us and sooth us because
I know when the topic of generosity comes up,

180
00:19:53.160 --> 00:19:55.230
we have things that upset us.

181
00:19:55.230 --> 00:19:58.380
And this is a whole different thing we're doing today, it really is.

182
00:19:59.040 --> 00:20:01.860
And I couldn't be more excited, honestly,

183
00:20:01.860 --> 00:20:04.740
about the next six weeks. I'm excited for you.

184
00:20:05.610 --> 00:20:06.870
I'm excited for you.

185
00:20:07.470 --> 00:20:09.950
And why don't we pray right now before we go any further.

186
00:20:09.950 --> 00:20:13.980
God, I know that everyone who's at a Crossroads Anywhere

187
00:20:13.980 --> 00:20:18.450
we're meeting right now is somebody who wants to know You

188
00:20:18.450 --> 00:20:19.650
and wants more of You,

189
00:20:19.650 --> 00:20:21.960
wants to experience You to a greater degree.

190
00:20:21.990 --> 00:20:25.500
I pray that happens today and throughout this entire series.

191
00:20:25.500 --> 00:20:26.160
I'm excited, God.

192
00:20:26.160 --> 00:20:30.000
You've finally given me the right timing

193
00:20:30.000 --> 00:20:34.500
to give something that is the right word at the right place.

194
00:20:35.340 --> 00:20:36.240
So help me to be clear.

195
00:20:36.240 --> 00:20:37.380
Help me to be helpful.

196
00:20:38.040 --> 00:20:43.380
And help your children come to a place of fulfillment and joy and peace.

197
00:20:43.400 --> 00:20:47.550
I pray these things according to the character and identity of Jesus, Amen.

198
00:20:49.940 --> 00:20:53.250
Well, you know, I read a lot of stuff.

199
00:20:53.250 --> 00:20:55.410
I'm exposed to a lot of stimulating material.

200
00:20:56.580 --> 00:20:57.620
Is there piano music still going?

201
00:20:57.620 --> 00:20:58.050
No, good. I hope it's not.

202
00:20:59.220 --> 00:21:04.050
I read and I'm exposed to a lot of material that's very, very stimulating.

203
00:21:04.080 --> 00:21:05.700
I'm sure you are as well.

204
00:21:05.970 --> 00:21:08.050
Some stuff like, wow, I never knew that.

205
00:21:08.160 --> 00:21:11.340
One of the more recent books I read that was very, very stimulating

206
00:21:11.340 --> 00:21:13.560
was called The Arsenal of Democracy.

207
00:21:14.040 --> 00:21:16.950
It's all about how during World War II,

208
00:21:16.950 --> 00:21:23.040
the way we won World War II was all the titans of industry

209
00:21:23.040 --> 00:21:25.980
shifted on a dime and we took all of our production capacity

210
00:21:25.980 --> 00:21:30.090
and we turned it into bullets, into machine guns, into airplanes.

211
00:21:30.750 --> 00:21:33.840
Hitler was utterly stupefied that we were able to do

212
00:21:33.840 --> 00:21:35.580
what we did in such a short amount of time.

213
00:21:35.960 --> 00:21:39.180
And the focus of the book really is the Ford Motor Company,

214
00:21:39.180 --> 00:21:43.290
where they shifted all of their Know-How on the assembly line

215
00:21:43.290 --> 00:21:45.270
and they brought it to the airplane.

216
00:21:45.270 --> 00:21:49.230
The very, very first plane ever made the history of the world

217
00:21:49.230 --> 00:21:53.910
on an assembly line, which, of course, was started by Henry Ford.

218
00:21:53.910 --> 00:21:56.680
They made long range bombers, B-24s.

219
00:21:56.850 --> 00:22:01.080
They had a plant that was 5 million square feet, Willow Run.

220
00:22:01.500 --> 00:22:04.320
And they got up to capacity and they worked out the kinks.

221
00:22:05.070 --> 00:22:10.290
Brass and leather and metal would come in one side of the plant

222
00:22:10.290 --> 00:22:14.580
and out the other side would come a B-24 bomber every hour.

223
00:22:15.060 --> 00:22:18.600
Every hour, a new B-24, every hour a new one.

224
00:22:18.870 --> 00:22:20.400
And Hitler just couldn't believe how much, how they were cranking.

225
00:22:20.420 --> 00:22:21.060
.

226
00:22:21.120 --> 00:22:21.730
It was amazing, awesome.

227
00:22:21.900 --> 00:22:26.610
But as excited as I am about that book I just finished a couple months ago,

228
00:22:26.610 --> 00:22:30.460
nothing like the one I finished several years ago

229
00:22:30.460 --> 00:22:32.160
that has stuck with me

230
00:22:32.160 --> 00:22:36.030
and has been in my mind like a wormhole

231
00:22:36.030 --> 00:22:39.270
affecting me positively for several, several years.

232
00:22:40.340 --> 00:22:42.650
The book is called The Blessed Life.

233
00:22:42.650 --> 00:22:47.690
The inspiration of this book is where we get our series today.

234
00:22:50.530 --> 00:22:53.080
Last week we had an amazing time, right, with Michael Junior.

235
00:22:53.360 --> 00:22:55.110
Man, he was awesome, man.

236
00:22:55.110 --> 00:22:55.470
[applause]

237
00:22:56.800 --> 00:23:00.070
Michael Junior, he --

238
00:23:00.070 --> 00:23:02.110
I thought we were just getting a change of pace.

239
00:23:02.110 --> 00:23:04.630
That's what that's what I signed off on the expense of

240
00:23:04.630 --> 00:23:06.360
it was just getting a change of pace,

241
00:23:06.360 --> 00:23:06.840
something different at church.

242
00:23:07.210 --> 00:23:08.840
I had no idea, like, oh, my gosh.

243
00:23:08.980 --> 00:23:10.790
Hundreds of people are going to come to know Christ through it.

244
00:23:10.840 --> 00:23:12.160
People raised their hand. Amazing.

245
00:23:12.160 --> 00:23:12.460
Amazing.

246
00:23:12.670 --> 00:23:15.340
I had no idea like on a dime 2200 people

247
00:23:15.340 --> 00:23:18.280
would show up for his concert on Sunday night.

248
00:23:19.330 --> 00:23:22.000
And here's the awesome part,

249
00:23:22.000 --> 00:23:24.610
he gave Crossroads 30% of his proceeds,

250
00:23:24.610 --> 00:23:25.960
whatever they were on Sunday night.

251
00:23:25.990 --> 00:23:29.200
And all of the stuff we paid him and airfare, it all got paid off.

252
00:23:29.200 --> 00:23:30.970
It was all done, it was awesome, it was great.

253
00:23:31.750 --> 00:23:33.900
And here's the thing that's really crazy.

254
00:23:33.910 --> 00:23:35.800
But here's the thing is really crazy about it.

255
00:23:35.800 --> 00:23:37.990
What's really cool was I didn't know

256
00:23:37.990 --> 00:23:40.570
when he talked about the church that impacted him,

257
00:23:40.570 --> 00:23:42.400
when he talked about that last week,

258
00:23:42.400 --> 00:23:45.370
that church is a church that birthed the content of this book.

259
00:23:46.410 --> 00:23:50.370
The pastor he talks about is the pastor of the book called The Blessed Life.

260
00:23:50.580 --> 00:23:53.220
No idea, happened right before this time.

261
00:23:53.610 --> 00:23:55.530
I was talking with another friend of mine

262
00:23:55.530 --> 00:23:59.370
who has gone through this content in his church in California.

263
00:23:59.760 --> 00:24:02.310
And he said, "Man, this is really -- our people love this series.".

264
00:24:02.520 --> 00:24:03.020
Okay, I'm going to bring it.

265
00:24:03.190 --> 00:24:06.120
Let me tell you why I haven't brought this series to you before.

266
00:24:07.560 --> 00:24:09.960
You're gonna hear stuff that you've heard me say before,

267
00:24:09.960 --> 00:24:12.720
but not with the clarity and conviction

268
00:24:12.720 --> 00:24:14.340
and the number of angles I'm going to come at it.

269
00:24:14.730 --> 00:24:16.050
Here's a reason why I haven't brought it.

270
00:24:16.050 --> 00:24:17.430
And I want to apologize to you for it.

271
00:24:17.760 --> 00:24:22.140
Because there's aspects of this content that will enable you

272
00:24:22.140 --> 00:24:27.030
to accuse me of being a prosperity preacher, which I am not.

273
00:24:27.060 --> 00:24:29.000
Anybody who knows me, anyone who's been around Crossroads any length,

274
00:24:29.310 --> 00:24:32.760
I do not believe that you have a right to be healthy

275
00:24:32.760 --> 00:24:34.020
and you have a right to be wealthy.

276
00:24:34.230 --> 00:24:36.690
And if you're not healthy and wealthy,

277
00:24:36.690 --> 00:24:39.360
then God's not happy with you because you're not giving.

278
00:24:40.170 --> 00:24:41.040
Do not believe that.

279
00:24:41.040 --> 00:24:43.110
Never preached anything like that at all.

280
00:24:43.410 --> 00:24:47.670
I've been so afraid to be in the camp of that whole thing,

281
00:24:47.670 --> 00:24:50.220
though, that there's certain things in the Bible

282
00:24:50.220 --> 00:24:54.770
I haven't preached with real clarity and forcefulness

283
00:24:54.770 --> 00:24:55.590
because I'm afraid of --

284
00:24:55.770 --> 00:25:02.810
And there's things in this book that the cynic
would read or pick up and go, "OH, heh."

285
00:25:03.990 --> 00:25:05.630
I tell you, what I'm experiencing what we're going to talk about

286
00:25:05.640 --> 00:25:09.900
I've personally experienced in my life walking with Christ for thirty--

287
00:25:12.550 --> 00:25:14.930
I can't do math on stage, whatever 30 some years.

288
00:25:14.930 --> 00:25:18.070
And since I read this book several years ago,

289
00:25:18.070 --> 00:25:20.650
it's like, oh yeah, yeah, and it's been on my mind.

290
00:25:20.680 --> 00:25:22.610
So I'm real excited to bring this to you.

291
00:25:22.630 --> 00:25:24.070
It's going to be good stuff.

292
00:25:24.100 --> 00:25:25.600
Acts 20:35.

293
00:25:25.600 --> 00:25:29.950
And by the way, over the next few weeks I'm gonna
give you a lot of Bible, a lot of Bible.

294
00:25:29.980 --> 00:25:32.650
I know we have different ideas of the Bible in here.

295
00:25:32.650 --> 00:25:36.400
We have different amounts that we each maybe digest with the Bible.

296
00:25:36.670 --> 00:25:38.710
But I'm gonna let the Bible speak for itself.

297
00:25:38.740 --> 00:25:40.500
And whatever you believe about it or don't believe about it,

298
00:25:40.500 --> 00:25:42.820
but I think you're gonna be helped and be prodded a little bit.

299
00:25:43.060 --> 00:25:47.110
Because the Bible speaks on how to be blessed again and again and again.

300
00:25:47.130 --> 00:25:49.060
Acts 20:35 says.

301
00:25:57.250 --> 00:25:58.360
Now, I like receiving.

302
00:25:58.960 --> 00:25:59.890
Anyone else like receiving?

303
00:26:00.190 --> 00:26:00.880
I do. I like it.

304
00:26:01.210 --> 00:26:03.840
And there's a great series to have on receiving.

305
00:26:04.870 --> 00:26:07.060
But the Bible says blessed are those who give.

306
00:26:07.060 --> 00:26:08.770
It's more blessed to give and receive.

307
00:26:09.090 --> 00:26:11.840
What does that mean? More blessed to give?

308
00:26:11.850 --> 00:26:14.200
Why is that? What does it mean to be blessed?

309
00:26:15.400 --> 00:26:17.020
When you came into your Crossroads site today,

310
00:26:17.020 --> 00:26:17.950
you might have gotten wet.

311
00:26:19.170 --> 00:26:19.990
You might have gotten wet.

312
00:26:19.990 --> 00:26:22.990
Maybe you didn't notice, but I requested for misters

313
00:26:22.990 --> 00:26:25.480
to be over the doors when you walked into a Crossroads site.

314
00:26:26.200 --> 00:26:30.040
And what I was trying to replicate was my very first

315
00:26:30.040 --> 00:26:32.700
and only experience with a rain forest.

316
00:26:33.610 --> 00:26:36.290
When I was in New Zealand several months ago,

317
00:26:36.290 --> 00:26:38.140
it was the trip of a lifetime, because for most my lifetime

318
00:26:38.140 --> 00:26:41.710
I've been planning it and I finally went with some friends.

319
00:26:41.720 --> 00:26:43.510
We camped. We went through all the whole thing.

320
00:26:43.560 --> 00:26:46.810
New Zealand is a fascinating small landmass

321
00:26:46.810 --> 00:26:51.580
and all kinds of topographical and climate zones.

322
00:26:51.720 --> 00:26:55.330
It's really wild how many different variances there are

323
00:26:55.330 --> 00:26:57.880
in climate and terrain all over this small landmass.

324
00:26:57.880 --> 00:27:01.450
And so I went to our very first rainforest.

325
00:27:01.760 --> 00:27:03.260
And that's where that picture is from.

326
00:27:03.470 --> 00:27:05.950
And it isn't what I thought it would be.

327
00:27:05.960 --> 00:27:08.390
Like I thought being in a rainforest would be what it's like

328
00:27:08.390 --> 00:27:11.960
when I'm sitting in a tree stand trying to hunt a deer

329
00:27:11.960 --> 00:27:14.240
and it's raining and lightning showers.

330
00:27:14.510 --> 00:27:16.760
I thought that's what it would, because you're in the woods and it's raining.

331
00:27:17.330 --> 00:27:18.980
It's not like that at all, at least not this one was.

332
00:27:19.460 --> 00:27:22.460
This one, it was a fine mist like your Disney World.

333
00:27:22.460 --> 00:27:23.950
Just a fine mist that's on you all the time.

334
00:27:24.170 --> 00:27:26.690
And you keep thinking your clothes are going to get dripping wet.

335
00:27:26.720 --> 00:27:30.800
But there's enough light out to the -- enough must be getting evaporated.

336
00:27:30.800 --> 00:27:32.930
But yet there it's always kind of moist.

337
00:27:32.930 --> 00:27:34.180
It's kind of crazy.

338
00:27:34.190 --> 00:27:34.840
You're not uncomfortable.

339
00:27:34.850 --> 00:27:36.560
It's just it's very, very damp.

340
00:27:37.010 --> 00:27:39.050
And they told us, the locals told us

341
00:27:39.050 --> 00:27:41.900
at this kilometer marker that's when the rainforest starts.

342
00:27:42.140 --> 00:27:45.470
Like what? And bam, rainforest, poof come in rainforest.

343
00:27:45.500 --> 00:27:45.830
Oh, my goodness.

344
00:27:46.010 --> 00:27:48.530
And then this mile marker, boom, rainforest ends.

345
00:27:48.770 --> 00:27:51.500
And that's the way it is all the time.

346
00:27:51.860 --> 00:27:53.480
It was crazy.

347
00:27:54.450 --> 00:27:58.660
Rainforests are what it is like to live the blessed life.

348
00:27:59.990 --> 00:28:03.110
The blessed life is understanding

349
00:28:03.110 --> 00:28:06.140
where it is that the most moisture from God is.

350
00:28:06.680 --> 00:28:10.370
The blessed life is about understanding,

351
00:28:10.370 --> 00:28:13.100
understanding is where do I go to sense God more?

352
00:28:13.640 --> 00:28:19.670
What do I do to get from Him whatever He might give me?

353
00:28:20.360 --> 00:28:24.410
What is it that I need to be having on my mind to get around the moisture?

354
00:28:24.440 --> 00:28:28.760
And when we have dry hearts, parched souls,

355
00:28:28.760 --> 00:28:31.490
it might be because we all go through desert periods.

356
00:28:31.670 --> 00:28:34.400
We do. We all go through desert periods, difficult periods.

357
00:28:35.350 --> 00:28:38.210
It might also be because we're not inside of

358
00:28:38.210 --> 00:28:40.450
the kilometer marker for where the blessed life is.

359
00:28:40.460 --> 00:28:46.070
We're not in the place, in the zone where God's moisture is.

360
00:28:46.280 --> 00:28:48.990
It's more blessed to give than receive.

361
00:28:49.010 --> 00:28:53.510
So when I am a giver, there is moisture,

362
00:28:53.990 --> 00:28:56.000
there is a presence of God.

363
00:28:56.840 --> 00:28:59.540
It's the way His economy works.

364
00:28:59.870 --> 00:29:03.350
The Book of Luke 6:37, Jesus says:.

365
00:29:25.950 --> 00:29:27.500
(whoot) Yeah. Someone's excited be that verse.

366
00:29:27.970 --> 00:29:29.360
Now, here's the thing.

367
00:29:29.390 --> 00:29:30.290
Here's the crazy thing.

368
00:29:31.550 --> 00:29:33.980
This verse doesn't mention money at all.

369
00:29:34.580 --> 00:29:38.900
Fact: I haven't mentioned money at all, so far, doesn't at all.

370
00:29:39.140 --> 00:29:42.590
This verse is just staying a way that God's economy works.

371
00:29:42.590 --> 00:29:46.040
An economy exists about much more than simply finances.

372
00:29:46.400 --> 00:29:50.060
Who is it that gets judged by other people a lot?

373
00:29:50.720 --> 00:29:52.550
Those who judge other people a lot.

374
00:29:53.240 --> 00:29:55.910
Who is it that feels condemned by other people?

375
00:29:56.090 --> 00:29:57.560
Those who condemn other people.

376
00:29:57.770 --> 00:30:00.380
Who is it that receives grace from other people?

377
00:30:00.380 --> 00:30:01.650
People who give them second chances.

378
00:30:01.670 --> 00:30:02.390
You know who it is?

379
00:30:02.690 --> 00:30:05.750
Those who give other people second chances and give other people forgiveness.

380
00:30:06.320 --> 00:30:11.540
Why is it we are in such a politically divisive country right now?

381
00:30:11.690 --> 00:30:15.080
The right and the left, whichever you are,
not everyone on the right and everyone left.

382
00:30:15.140 --> 00:30:17.480
The generalizing is like this, because the right and the left are just --

383
00:30:17.480 --> 00:30:19.790
It's only going to get worse, by the way, over the next several months.

384
00:30:20.180 --> 00:30:22.010
It's going to get even worse, way, way worse.

385
00:30:22.430 --> 00:30:23.210
And what's happening?

386
00:30:23.810 --> 00:30:26.660
Everyone on the left is feeling judged by people on the right.

387
00:30:26.660 --> 00:30:28.130
So they're judging people on the right.

388
00:30:28.160 --> 00:30:30.800
Everybody on the right is feeling condemned by people on the left,

389
00:30:30.800 --> 00:30:31.740
so they're condemning people on the left.

390
00:30:31.760 --> 00:30:32.960
I mean, it's going both ways.

391
00:30:33.220 --> 00:30:35.180
It's like, hey, let's just to have a condemnation fest.

392
00:30:35.210 --> 00:30:36.620
Let's have a judgment fest.

393
00:30:37.070 --> 00:30:40.910
And as we do things, we invite things back to us.

394
00:30:42.090 --> 00:30:45.350
The blessed life is understanding how God operates

395
00:30:45.350 --> 00:30:47.710
and getting to where God is and being like God.

396
00:30:47.990 --> 00:30:52.070
I want to get into the blessed zone because that's where God is.

397
00:30:52.760 --> 00:30:54.770
I want to get into the blessed zone

398
00:30:54.770 --> 00:30:59.140
because that's where His powerful attributes exist.

399
00:31:01.050 --> 00:31:04.530
And one of those attributes, a core,

400
00:31:04.530 --> 00:31:09.580
I mean a core part of His identity is He is a giver.

401
00:31:09.580 --> 00:31:10.660
John 3:16 says:.

402
00:31:19.270 --> 00:31:20.560
What did He do with Jesus?

403
00:31:21.070 --> 00:31:22.660
He gave Him.

404
00:31:24.220 --> 00:31:27.550
He allowed you and I to receive Him.

405
00:31:29.040 --> 00:31:32.520
He put Jesus on a cross to die a brutal death

406
00:31:32.520 --> 00:31:36.330
so that you and I wouldn't have to die a brutal death for all of eternity.

407
00:31:36.330 --> 00:31:38.430
That is the Gospel. That is the Good News, that God's a giver.

408
00:31:39.360 --> 00:31:41.380
He didn't make us work it off on our own.

409
00:31:41.400 --> 00:31:43.430
He actually gave us something.

410
00:31:43.440 --> 00:31:47.280
So when we look at giving, there's four aspects of what giving is.

411
00:31:47.970 --> 00:31:54.440
The overarching idea today is this:.

412
00:31:54.510 --> 00:31:56.550
This is not an economic issue.

413
00:31:57.030 --> 00:31:58.980
This is a spiritual issue.

414
00:31:59.160 --> 00:32:00.760
It is about my heart.

415
00:32:00.800 --> 00:32:02.610
Matthew 6:21, Jesus says:.

416
00:32:08.720 --> 00:32:10.730
So the thing that we value,

417
00:32:10.730 --> 00:32:15.230
the thing that we throw ourselves behind,

418
00:32:15.230 --> 00:32:18.800
that is our treasure and that is going to have our heart.

419
00:32:19.130 --> 00:32:22.820
God wants not your money.

420
00:32:22.820 --> 00:32:23.580
God wants your heart.

421
00:32:23.620 --> 00:32:23.770
I'm going to say that again.

422
00:32:24.030 --> 00:32:26.390
God does not want your money.

423
00:32:26.420 --> 00:32:27.170
He wants your heart.

424
00:32:27.220 --> 00:32:30.560
God's not having a resource problem up in heaven.

425
00:32:31.910 --> 00:32:33.410
He's not going, "Oh, my goodness.

426
00:32:33.410 --> 00:32:34.880
How am I going to keep the lights on up here?

427
00:32:34.920 --> 00:32:35.340
Whew.

428
00:32:35.900 --> 00:32:40.070
Geeze, just -- I can't -- all the things I want to do on planet Earth.

429
00:32:40.100 --> 00:32:43.460
Oh, man, I would do them, but I just -- I'm just strapped.

430
00:32:43.880 --> 00:32:46.420
There's too much eternity at the end of my resources.

431
00:32:46.430 --> 00:32:49.040
I'm sorry. I just -- I just can't make ends meet."

432
00:32:49.080 --> 00:32:53.410
No, he's not, He's not strapped on resources,

433
00:32:53.410 --> 00:32:59.780
but He leads us in this area because He wants us to be like Him.

434
00:33:00.230 --> 00:33:02.660
The way that we're blessed is when I'm like God.

435
00:33:02.660 --> 00:33:04.610
The more I'm like God, the more blessed I am,

436
00:33:04.610 --> 00:33:06.720
because that's the way the cosmos operates.

437
00:33:06.720 --> 00:33:08.690
That's the way he's designed my life to operate.

438
00:33:09.440 --> 00:33:12.080
He is a giver and so I have to be a giver.

439
00:33:12.110 --> 00:33:17.120
And we know what has our heart based on what we're giving ourselves to,

440
00:33:17.120 --> 00:33:18.890
based on what's on our calendar

441
00:33:18.890 --> 00:33:21.800
and based on our credit card statement or our bank statement.

442
00:33:21.830 --> 00:33:24.470
It doesn't matter what we say we value,

443
00:33:24.470 --> 00:33:30.290
what's on our credit card statement, our bank statement says what we value.

444
00:33:30.290 --> 00:33:33.220
It's like God's putting a stethoscope on our wallet.

445
00:33:34.020 --> 00:33:37.560
He goes, let me see.

446
00:33:37.560 --> 00:33:39.920
And what He's concerned about and wanting to do is develop our heart.

447
00:33:39.980 --> 00:33:43.790
That's what I want for all of us: I want our hearts to be developed.

448
00:33:43.790 --> 00:33:47.830
Crossroads is not having some big new initiative that we have to fund.

449
00:33:47.840 --> 00:33:49.640
We're not. This is not a campaign.

450
00:33:50.770 --> 00:33:53.110
We're doing just fine around here,

451
00:33:53.110 --> 00:33:54.700
bills are getting paid, and we're doing just fine.

452
00:33:55.490 --> 00:33:57.160
Things are going just fine.

453
00:33:57.190 --> 00:33:58.020
There's not some new --

454
00:33:58.390 --> 00:34:03.430
This is I want more people who look to me as pastor

455
00:34:03.430 --> 00:34:06.100
who I feel a spiritual responsibility over,.

456
00:34:07.380 --> 00:34:09.070
whether I know you personally or not.

457
00:34:09.390 --> 00:34:12.730
I want more people to be in the zone of being blessed

458
00:34:12.730 --> 00:34:16.780
and sensing the presence of God and being more like Him.

459
00:34:16.990 --> 00:34:20.650
To do this there's four areas we're going to come to again and again.

460
00:34:20.980 --> 00:34:23.350
Four things we've got to deal with in our heart.

461
00:34:23.350 --> 00:34:26.230
The first thing we have to deal with is we have to deal with a greedy heart.

462
00:34:26.610 --> 00:34:29.470
We have to deal with a greedy heart.

463
00:34:30.880 --> 00:34:33.670
All kids have the very first thing,

464
00:34:33.670 --> 00:34:36.460
the first word that they clearly put into a sentence

465
00:34:36.460 --> 00:34:38.860
and they're trying to exert their will.

466
00:34:38.860 --> 00:34:42.730
That word is not mommy and daddy.

467
00:34:42.730 --> 00:34:44.260
You think your kids said mommy and daddy.

468
00:34:45.190 --> 00:34:47.650
Your kids maybe only said mommy and daddy

469
00:34:47.650 --> 00:34:49.660
because you brainwashed them to say mommy and daddy.

470
00:34:50.140 --> 00:34:53.350
I've seen this happening under my roof with my daughter and son in law.

471
00:34:53.560 --> 00:34:57.320
They're like jiving to see who my grandson says first: mama or dada.

472
00:34:57.320 --> 00:34:58.350
And they're so arrogant.

473
00:34:58.680 --> 00:35:00.370
They want to hear mama or dada first.

474
00:35:00.550 --> 00:35:02.090
They're they're just brainwashing him.

475
00:35:02.140 --> 00:35:03.690
That's fine. I did the same thing with Lib.

476
00:35:03.790 --> 00:35:04.870
I did. I understand it.

477
00:35:05.230 --> 00:35:10.390
But my grandson, if he's like any other kid, anyone you know,

478
00:35:10.390 --> 00:35:12.910
the first word is going to be "mine."

479
00:35:13.930 --> 00:35:16.390
Mine. Mine.

480
00:35:16.540 --> 00:35:19.630
You and I are not born with a generous heart.

481
00:35:19.720 --> 00:35:22.040
I don't know anybody who doesn't think they're generous.

482
00:35:22.060 --> 00:35:24.760
Everybody I meet says they're generous.

483
00:35:25.060 --> 00:35:26.290
We all think we're generous.

484
00:35:27.010 --> 00:35:28.090
We're not generous.

485
00:35:28.810 --> 00:35:31.840
We have -- if we are generous, it has to be because

486
00:35:31.840 --> 00:35:37.000
of an intensive spiritual routine we go against to become generous.

487
00:35:37.030 --> 00:35:41.380
Because every last human being is born greedy.

488
00:35:42.010 --> 00:35:43.300
We want what we want.

489
00:35:43.330 --> 00:35:44.260
It's all about me.

490
00:35:44.280 --> 00:35:45.480
I want.

491
00:35:45.480 --> 00:35:48.940
Mine. I want what's coming to me.

492
00:35:49.240 --> 00:35:52.390
In Deuteronomy 15:7, God says:

493
00:36:06.580 --> 00:36:12.570
God is giving again and again instructions to
His people how to deal with His people.

494
00:36:13.570 --> 00:36:16.390
He says, I don't want you clinging to your stuff.

495
00:36:16.900 --> 00:36:20.140
I want you blessing's people that you see in need.

496
00:36:22.580 --> 00:36:26.810
The reason why I can't stand the prosperity thing, prosperity preacher thing

497
00:36:26.810 --> 00:36:28.640
and why I'm sorry I haven't talked about

498
00:36:28.640 --> 00:36:30.710
some of the things I'm going to talk about until this series.

499
00:36:31.460 --> 00:36:32.870
I've been a weenie boy. Sorry for that.

500
00:36:33.230 --> 00:36:36.440
But the reason why I get so upset about the prosperity thing

501
00:36:36.440 --> 00:36:39.980
is the prosperity thing just plays on our greediness.

502
00:36:40.870 --> 00:36:42.830
Like you want to get more from God?

503
00:36:42.860 --> 00:36:43.940
Good, then give.

504
00:36:46.770 --> 00:36:49.570
Greed is never a good motivator for giving.

505
00:36:50.550 --> 00:36:54.720
If you just give, then you're gonna get more.

506
00:36:54.720 --> 00:36:54.730
God's gonna give you and bless you.

507
00:36:54.730 --> 00:36:59.070
Yeah. That's never a -- that's never a motivator for our heart.

508
00:36:59.370 --> 00:37:01.240
Greed never pulls our heart along.

509
00:37:01.280 --> 00:37:05.490
So having some theology where if I get you to give

510
00:37:05.490 --> 00:37:08.190
then God's gonna give you more

511
00:37:08.190 --> 00:37:14.400
entirely defeats the point of coming to be like God and have His character.

512
00:37:15.540 --> 00:37:17.910
Robert Morris, who wrote this book, said:.

513
00:37:27.080 --> 00:37:29.970
In the Middle East, where I've been to a number of times

514
00:37:29.970 --> 00:37:32.780
is the lowest spot on all of planet Earth.

515
00:37:32.960 --> 00:37:34.460
It's called the Dead Sea.

516
00:37:34.820 --> 00:37:37.070
The Dead Sea is beautiful when you look at it.

517
00:37:37.850 --> 00:37:40.700
Water's coming from all over the place and just kind of trickling into it.

518
00:37:40.940 --> 00:37:43.330
It's beautiful when you look at it, until you get in it.

519
00:37:44.560 --> 00:37:47.410
It is awful, it's called the Dead Sea for a reason

520
00:37:47.410 --> 00:37:50.170
because nothing living is inside the Dead Sea.

521
00:37:50.710 --> 00:37:51.220
Nothing.

522
00:37:51.250 --> 00:37:54.190
It has this really high alkaline content, mineral content.

523
00:37:54.490 --> 00:37:56.050
You feel like you could walk on water.

524
00:37:56.080 --> 00:37:59.830
You can just stand like this and you will float like up to your belly button.

525
00:38:00.790 --> 00:38:03.310
In fact, if you ever go there, just word to the wise,

526
00:38:03.310 --> 00:38:07.240
do not shave the day before you go there,

527
00:38:07.240 --> 00:38:09.850
or if you're scratching any place your body,

528
00:38:09.850 --> 00:38:10.630
don't go in there either.

529
00:38:11.020 --> 00:38:13.720
I learned that very, very difficult the first time I went in.

530
00:38:14.320 --> 00:38:16.180
It is eew. It is nasty.

531
00:38:16.210 --> 00:38:17.740
Why is it so nasty?

532
00:38:17.770 --> 00:38:22.000
It's so nasty. It's dead because there's no outflow out of the Dead Sea.

533
00:38:23.270 --> 00:38:26.750
The Dead Sea receives, but it doesn't give.

534
00:38:27.170 --> 00:38:30.410
Any body of water that does not give

535
00:38:30.410 --> 00:38:33.050
is going to be a dead disgusting body of water.

536
00:38:33.200 --> 00:38:35.120
This is how God's operated, our spirits should operate.

537
00:38:35.480 --> 00:38:40.270
We receive and we give, receive, there's in-flow and there's outflow.

538
00:38:40.310 --> 00:38:43.040
And a greedy heart only wants to receive

539
00:38:43.040 --> 00:38:47.300
and a greedy heart will eventually have a life that is stanky.

540
00:38:48.050 --> 00:38:51.320
We need not only deal with a grieving or --

541
00:38:51.320 --> 00:38:52.750
Stanky, it's not a bad word in case you didn't know.

542
00:38:53.160 --> 00:38:56.480
I do really well not to do some of the words that I use around here,

543
00:38:56.480 --> 00:38:58.390
but that's not a bad word, stanky.

544
00:38:58.430 --> 00:39:00.220
You can use that one. Your mom won't get mad at you.

545
00:39:00.530 --> 00:39:05.960
The second thing that we don't only have to
deal with a grieving heart, we have to --

546
00:39:05.960 --> 00:39:08.090
Excuse me, we not only have to deal with a greedy heart,

547
00:39:08.090 --> 00:39:09.830
we have to deal with a grieving heart.

548
00:39:10.490 --> 00:39:12.470
So a greedy heart is on the front end.

549
00:39:12.740 --> 00:39:14.930
I'm not sure that I want to give to help somebody.

550
00:39:15.160 --> 00:39:17.330
A grieving heart is after I do, I'm like "(sound effect).

551
00:39:18.970 --> 00:39:20.290
Gosh, why did I do that?

552
00:39:20.350 --> 00:39:21.720
Oh, ugh."

553
00:39:24.670 --> 00:39:28.150
Now, we as human beings are very, very smart people,

554
00:39:28.150 --> 00:39:32.140
so we figure out ways to get around how we operate.

555
00:39:32.710 --> 00:39:36.040
So one of the ways we get around having a greedy heart

556
00:39:36.040 --> 00:39:37.930
and having a grieving heart,

557
00:39:37.930 --> 00:39:40.010
if we're trying to get people to give money,

558
00:39:40.010 --> 00:39:41.890
it's the system of fair share.

559
00:39:42.790 --> 00:39:46.480
Fair share is all about, "Look, none of us really want to give.

560
00:39:46.510 --> 00:39:47.790
Okay? We all know that, right?

561
00:39:47.820 --> 00:39:48.330
Right. Right.

562
00:39:48.670 --> 00:39:50.740
So we're all gonna hurt equally.

563
00:39:51.690 --> 00:39:55.610
And we're all going to grieve equally, whatever your fair share is."

564
00:39:56.380 --> 00:39:59.650
No concept at all that it actually might be a blessing to give,

565
00:40:00.110 --> 00:40:01.640
that I might actually like to give,

566
00:40:01.640 --> 00:40:04.150
that I might actually receive something that I give.

567
00:40:04.600 --> 00:40:08.120
That's what a grieving heart is, "I don't want to.

568
00:40:08.140 --> 00:40:09.760
I do. Why did I do that?".

569
00:40:10.300 --> 00:40:13.000
Book of Deuteronomy 15:10, God says:.

570
00:40:13.000 --> 00:40:14.650
You shall give to him freely.

571
00:40:27.520 --> 00:40:28.150
He'll bless you.

572
00:40:29.380 --> 00:40:31.000
Don't be grieving after you give.

573
00:40:31.840 --> 00:40:34.700
Have a trust in God that He has noticed

574
00:40:34.700 --> 00:40:37.060
and He's not going to leave you high and dry.

575
00:40:42.110 --> 00:40:44.480
You know, sometimes I talk, I just have to stop my mind

576
00:40:44.480 --> 00:40:45.890
and like, oh, I wish I would --

577
00:40:45.890 --> 00:40:47.180
I can't be thinking about that right now,

578
00:40:47.180 --> 00:40:48.320
but I am thing about right now, I shouldn't.

579
00:40:48.320 --> 00:40:51.710
It's just like shiny object, shiny object,

580
00:40:51.710 --> 00:40:52.150
squirrel, squirrel.

581
00:40:52.880 --> 00:40:56.120
I just realized I have a -- I've just gotta get off my --

582
00:40:56.120 --> 00:40:57.710
get it done so I can focus on the rest of our time.

583
00:40:57.980 --> 00:41:01.160
I've got this thing, I've got to be with some folks after this.

584
00:41:01.160 --> 00:41:03.380
We're gonna go out to eat and I just realized,

585
00:41:03.380 --> 00:41:06.470
I didn't bring any cash and I want to be able to throw in on the meal

586
00:41:06.470 --> 00:41:08.590
because I know this guy is gonna take and I want to throw in.

587
00:41:08.870 --> 00:41:12.330
Does anybody have a hundred dollars you could give me?

588
00:41:12.330 --> 00:41:16.250
Because it's kind of an expensive place and -- Aww.

589
00:41:16.250 --> 00:41:16.370
[applause]

590
00:41:21.300 --> 00:41:22.320
You have $100 there?

591
00:41:23.280 --> 00:41:27.200
Wow. Thank you very much.

592
00:41:27.200 --> 00:41:27.480
[applause]

593
00:41:29.970 --> 00:41:34.230
Now, I set that up, that whole thing I just set up.

594
00:41:35.620 --> 00:41:38.920
I talked to him before the service and I said,

595
00:41:38.920 --> 00:41:39.500
when I talk about $100, just come bring it up.

596
00:41:41.290 --> 00:41:42.910
Do you think that was hard for him?

597
00:41:43.780 --> 00:41:44.170
No.

598
00:41:45.150 --> 00:41:47.340
Because he knew that money wasn't his.

599
00:41:47.340 --> 00:41:48.000
[laughter]

600
00:41:49.980 --> 00:41:51.450
It was my money.

601
00:41:52.380 --> 00:41:55.320
It was my money, that's why he was so willing to do it.

602
00:41:55.890 --> 00:42:01.590
We grieve and we have grief because with
all of our stuff we're saying mine, mine.

603
00:42:02.250 --> 00:42:03.890
And we don't really believe it's God's.

604
00:42:03.960 --> 00:42:05.500
We don't believe that God has blessed us.

605
00:42:05.520 --> 00:42:07.150
We don't believe that God is active in our life.

606
00:42:07.170 --> 00:42:08.820
We're just clutching it. It's mine.

607
00:42:08.850 --> 00:42:11.550
It's only mine. And my, my, my, my, my.

608
00:42:12.350 --> 00:42:14.760
And when we think this way,

609
00:42:14.760 --> 00:42:20.880
we're not going to operate with a sense of zest and joy that we possibly can

610
00:42:20.880 --> 00:42:22.380
because we're just skimping on everything.

611
00:42:22.630 --> 00:42:23.430
Psalm 24:1 says:.

612
00:42:32.890 --> 00:42:33.700
Everything.

613
00:42:34.420 --> 00:42:37.930
Now, ladies, I've got to tell you, if there's things about your guy

614
00:42:37.930 --> 00:42:39.670
that you're dating or marrying that are annoying you,

615
00:42:39.670 --> 00:42:41.320
I can tell you what one of them probably is.

616
00:42:41.320 --> 00:42:42.550
I just want to plead guilty to it.

617
00:42:42.580 --> 00:42:45.130
Let me just tell you what, this is male confessional.

618
00:42:45.130 --> 00:42:46.630
Let me tell you what bothers us.

619
00:42:47.220 --> 00:42:51.160
What bothers us greatly is when we go out to order something

620
00:42:51.550 --> 00:42:55.150
and you say to us, "I'm just going to have some of his.".

621
00:42:57.980 --> 00:42:58.820
[laughter] Oh, no, you won't.

622
00:43:00.560 --> 00:43:03.080
Because why? Because it's mine.

623
00:43:04.400 --> 00:43:05.060
It's mine.

624
00:43:05.540 --> 00:43:10.190
You will not be having any of my fries as we go through the drive through.

625
00:43:10.190 --> 00:43:12.890
And in fact, the fries at the bottom of the bag, they're mine, too.

626
00:43:12.950 --> 00:43:14.500
Mine, mine.

627
00:43:14.660 --> 00:43:15.740
We just deal --

628
00:43:15.740 --> 00:43:20.120
We're very happy to give to you, but we don't want you to take from us.

629
00:43:20.880 --> 00:43:22.880
Now, I've finally gotten over this.

630
00:43:22.880 --> 00:43:25.040
I know what to do now. Lib will say, "Oh, I'll just --"

631
00:43:25.520 --> 00:43:28.000
I just ordered two things now, two things that I would like.

632
00:43:28.470 --> 00:43:30.690
And I know she's probably going to take half of the one.

633
00:43:31.070 --> 00:43:36.140
And while I'm doing that I'm just confessing that
our "mine" things, I have to fight that.

634
00:43:36.710 --> 00:43:38.420
I still had to fight. It's natural.

635
00:43:38.420 --> 00:43:39.360
It's deep in.

636
00:43:39.620 --> 00:43:43.640
I've got to exert effort to go against the other grain.

637
00:43:44.060 --> 00:43:45.560
I've got to fight a greedy heart.

638
00:43:45.590 --> 00:43:49.610
I've got to fight a grieving heart if I want to have a heart that's set apart.

639
00:43:49.790 --> 00:43:52.280
And I've got to develop a generous heart.

640
00:43:52.960 --> 00:43:56.960
I've got to develop -- I have to develop a generous heart,

641
00:43:56.960 --> 00:43:58.610
not pray for a generous heart.

642
00:43:58.910 --> 00:44:01.250
I've got to actually develop a generous heart,

643
00:44:01.250 --> 00:44:04.790
which is what we're going to work on in here over the next few weeks.

644
00:44:04.790 --> 00:44:06.170
Deuteronomy 15:14.

645
00:44:06.730 --> 00:44:08.030
I'm reading a lot of Deuteronomy.

646
00:44:08.030 --> 00:44:12.560
The Book of Deuteronomy has a lot of God establishing rules

647
00:44:12.560 --> 00:44:14.960
for His people, the nation of Israel,

648
00:44:14.960 --> 00:44:18.650
rules for how to have a society, a culture and the life that works.

649
00:44:19.460 --> 00:44:22.490
And so this is actually going to be very
important for us to understand in weeks ahead.

650
00:44:22.520 --> 00:44:25.400
But that's why I'm looking at a number of versus from Deuteronomy today.

651
00:44:25.640 --> 00:44:26.510
Here's what this one says:.

652
00:44:38.950 --> 00:44:41.860
You shall bless him, you shall give to him.

653
00:44:41.860 --> 00:44:46.010
And so what God is doing with His people here
is He's helping them to develop a generous heart.

654
00:44:46.240 --> 00:44:51.610
He's giving these instructions because anybody who does become blessed

655
00:44:51.610 --> 00:44:56.470
and who does operate in generosity is only there once we develop it.

656
00:44:56.470 --> 00:44:59.590
God's people would never do this naturally in and of our own accord.

657
00:45:00.010 --> 00:45:03.430
This is a part of spiritual formation, it's a part of spiritual growth.

658
00:45:04.620 --> 00:45:07.770
When I was in college, my parents were very generous with me,

659
00:45:07.770 --> 00:45:10.560
they just they took care of all my bills, they paid tuition,

660
00:45:10.560 --> 00:45:14.760
they paid for my books, they paid for room,

661
00:45:14.760 --> 00:45:17.910
they gave me a small stipend to live on, buy food and stuff.

662
00:45:17.910 --> 00:45:19.080
I lived off campus.

663
00:45:19.620 --> 00:45:25.380
And they weren't -- either they weren't that generous with that stipend

664
00:45:25.380 --> 00:45:29.730
or I really misspent that stipend, which is probably what it really was.

665
00:45:29.760 --> 00:45:35.600
But the matter was I would get down to the end of week two, end of week three,

666
00:45:35.880 --> 00:45:37.830
and I just had no money, no nothing.

667
00:45:38.070 --> 00:45:39.180
And I just went hungry.

668
00:45:39.240 --> 00:45:41.340
My college was four years of going hungry.

669
00:45:41.370 --> 00:45:46.390
People would see me from high school and where I used to be a bit of a beefcake,

670
00:45:46.390 --> 00:45:47.430
they'd go, "Man. You've lost weight.".

671
00:45:47.430 --> 00:45:48.910
I'm like, "Yeah, I'm not freaking eating, that's why."

672
00:45:48.910 --> 00:45:49.110
[laughter]

673
00:45:49.130 --> 00:45:54.780
Seriously, like for a guy back then, the worst
thing was someone say, "Are you losing weight?"

674
00:45:58.150 --> 00:46:01.100
I was building into this one family, the Rogers family.

675
00:46:01.360 --> 00:46:03.490
I was volunteering at this church, building into

676
00:46:03.490 --> 00:46:07.150
some these kids and their family, a high school and junior high kid.

677
00:46:07.720 --> 00:46:11.410
And one day, Jim Rogers, not to be confused with Mr.

678
00:46:11.410 --> 00:46:11.890
Rogers.

679
00:46:11.920 --> 00:46:15.700
Jim Rogers, he -- I was at this restaurant

680
00:46:15.700 --> 00:46:21.490
and he came up behind me and he put his hand in my pocket.

681
00:46:21.490 --> 00:46:21.500
I was like --

682
00:46:21.500 --> 00:46:23.380
And then he took his hand out of my pocket.

683
00:46:23.380 --> 00:46:25.810
I'm like, hmm, I think I know what happened there, but --

684
00:46:26.590 --> 00:46:29.160
Then he drove me to where I was -- where I where I lived.

685
00:46:29.170 --> 00:46:31.190
And when I got out of the car, he said, "Hey, Brian."

686
00:46:31.370 --> 00:46:33.100
Because I didn't acknowledge. It was very awkward.

687
00:46:33.460 --> 00:46:36.640
He said, "Hey, Brian, before you throw the pants

688
00:46:36.640 --> 00:46:39.280
in the washing machine, just check your pockets."

689
00:46:39.310 --> 00:46:40.710
I said, okay. Okay.

690
00:46:41.350 --> 00:46:44.530
I went in and checked it and there was a $20 bill in there.

691
00:46:44.540 --> 00:46:45.760
And I was like, oh, man.

692
00:46:46.210 --> 00:46:48.820
Wow. That is a game changer.

693
00:46:48.830 --> 00:46:49.810
A total game changer.

694
00:46:51.770 --> 00:46:54.000
I didn't say much, anything to him about it.

695
00:46:54.120 --> 00:46:56.820
I had never had anyone just give me money before

696
00:46:56.820 --> 00:46:58.860
or do an act of generosity at all.

697
00:46:58.860 --> 00:47:02.100
Up to that point my life all generosity was,

698
00:47:02.100 --> 00:47:04.320
"OK. And here is your birthday. So I have to give you something.

699
00:47:04.350 --> 00:47:06.300
Here is Christmas and I have to give you something.

700
00:47:06.300 --> 00:47:09.120
Or you've earned this working at fast food."

701
00:47:09.120 --> 00:47:11.040
It was like a gift.

702
00:47:11.160 --> 00:47:16.380
It was just out of left field, like, really, really crazy.

703
00:47:17.640 --> 00:47:21.330
Sometime later than that same restaurant, same spot,

704
00:47:21.330 --> 00:47:25.030
he comes up again checking out, I think after church on Sunday morning.

705
00:47:25.030 --> 00:47:27.590
And he puts his -- goes to put his hand in my pocket again.

706
00:47:27.660 --> 00:47:30.080
I just put my hand on his and I say, "Hey, Jim.

707
00:47:31.460 --> 00:47:32.100
You don't need to do that."

708
00:47:33.110 --> 00:47:35.190
He said. "I know.

709
00:47:36.670 --> 00:47:39.640
I know, but it's all God's money.

710
00:47:39.760 --> 00:47:40.710
I'm just redistributing it."

711
00:47:42.180 --> 00:47:49.940
That guy taught me something about the character of God

712
00:47:49.940 --> 00:47:54.800
and was God to me in a way that transformed my heart, transformed my life.

713
00:47:57.220 --> 00:47:59.430
Some time ago and I were going out on a date night.

714
00:48:00.620 --> 00:48:03.980
And we saw this woman broken down on the side of the road.

715
00:48:03.990 --> 00:48:06.230
We're going to an area of town where there's some nice restaurants

716
00:48:06.230 --> 00:48:11.300
and this was a car that I could tell was passing through this part of town,

717
00:48:11.300 --> 00:48:13.340
couldn't be living in this part of town.

718
00:48:13.460 --> 00:48:15.650
The car was different than what it would look like if you lived there

719
00:48:15.650 --> 00:48:17.930
and she looked different than what you would
probably look like if you lived there.

720
00:48:18.170 --> 00:48:20.750
And she was on the side of the road and her gas --

721
00:48:20.750 --> 00:48:23.180
Her gas tank was open or twist top open.

722
00:48:23.180 --> 00:48:24.440
And we pulled over and asked, what's going on?

723
00:48:24.560 --> 00:48:26.270
I'm out of gas. I don't know what to do

724
00:48:26.270 --> 00:48:26.840
We'll get you gas.

725
00:48:26.900 --> 00:48:29.570
So we went we got her gas, brought it back.

726
00:48:29.570 --> 00:48:31.190
And she was in the car.

727
00:48:31.190 --> 00:48:33.110
And I filled up the gas with all the --

728
00:48:33.510 --> 00:48:36.290
I don't know if we had two gallons or three
gallon tank, whatever it was, we filled it up.

729
00:48:36.980 --> 00:48:42.260
And then I took a 20 and I stuck in her gas cap and I shut it.

730
00:48:42.260 --> 00:48:44.210
And I told her, OK, it's all good.

731
00:48:44.220 --> 00:48:44.490
Thank you.

732
00:48:44.680 --> 00:48:46.070
And before I left and went away,

733
00:48:46.070 --> 00:48:51.170
I said, "Hey, I'm not sure if I closed your gas cap all the way,

734
00:48:51.170 --> 00:48:53.830
you might want to go back and just make sure that's closed."

735
00:48:54.210 --> 00:48:54.810
She said OK.

736
00:48:55.070 --> 00:48:57.530
So I'm going off, I'm looking in my rearview mirror.

737
00:48:57.940 --> 00:49:00.760
And I see her like, "Oh!"

738
00:49:00.760 --> 00:49:03.980
Like that 20 bucks did to her what it did for me,

739
00:49:03.980 --> 00:49:05.330
what it did for me way back when.

740
00:49:05.480 --> 00:49:09.350
And I'll tell what, Lib and I, that was
probably like the greatest date night we ever had.

741
00:49:09.860 --> 00:49:13.240
Seriously, because we got -- kind of got into the blessed zone.

742
00:49:13.730 --> 00:49:15.950
We were in the zone of where God is.

743
00:49:16.550 --> 00:49:20.010
Now contrast that with something that happened a few months ago.

744
00:49:20.090 --> 00:49:24.110
I'm getting new tires and there's a woman that's in the tire shop

745
00:49:24.110 --> 00:49:26.710
and she's talking with the guy who's giving her prices.

746
00:49:26.750 --> 00:49:29.060
I could tell that she's just like dripping off sweat.

747
00:49:29.090 --> 00:49:29.870
She's stressed.

748
00:49:30.240 --> 00:49:33.860
I can tell whatever's going on, she's not liking this conversation.

749
00:49:34.220 --> 00:49:37.010
And I get my car and I start going off.

750
00:49:37.020 --> 00:49:39.320
And it hits me, and I go, Oh, my gosh.

751
00:49:40.160 --> 00:49:42.410
That was a woman who's got to buy a new tire

752
00:49:42.410 --> 00:49:43.700
or a whole new set of tires

753
00:49:43.700 --> 00:49:45.860
and she has zero ability to do that.

754
00:49:47.150 --> 00:49:49.220
And I'm just thanking God that, God, thank you,

755
00:49:49.220 --> 00:49:52.520
that you blessed me that I could buy her a tire right now.

756
00:49:52.520 --> 00:49:55.380
And God, I'm sorry that I didn't.

757
00:49:56.620 --> 00:49:58.870
I am sorry. I am sorry.

758
00:49:58.870 --> 00:50:04.240
I am so blessed that I could buy four tires for somebody.

759
00:50:04.280 --> 00:50:06.550
It feels like a million dollars to them

760
00:50:06.550 --> 00:50:08.560
and you bless me enough that I could buy four tires.

761
00:50:08.560 --> 00:50:10.610
And I just made a commitment before God, I said, God, I'm not --

762
00:50:10.630 --> 00:50:13.060
Next time -- next time I'm going to get tires,

763
00:50:13.060 --> 00:50:14.680
someone's getting free tires."

764
00:50:14.680 --> 00:50:15.130
Sorry, I'm going to make it--

765
00:50:15.460 --> 00:50:16.960
Now, you guys are going to start tracking me.

766
00:50:17.080 --> 00:50:20.920
Like you're gonna be checking out my tread pattern right on my --

767
00:50:21.130 --> 00:50:22.490
Oh, he's going to be pretty soon.

768
00:50:22.490 --> 00:50:24.250
I've got to time it right.

769
00:50:24.250 --> 00:50:24.940
No, seriously.

770
00:50:25.360 --> 00:50:30.370
It's just something that I feel like I let God down on.

771
00:50:30.450 --> 00:50:32.200
I didn't get blessed in.

772
00:50:32.470 --> 00:50:34.120
I didn't feel the blessing.

773
00:50:34.590 --> 00:50:36.340
I felt like I let something go.

774
00:50:36.340 --> 00:50:41.140
And my hair, God was tapping on me and I didn't go the right way.

775
00:50:42.120 --> 00:50:44.530
Luke 6:30, Jesus says:

776
00:51:02.220 --> 00:51:06.500
We are born selfish, we are born sinners,

777
00:51:06.500 --> 00:51:07.940
people who missed the mark,

778
00:51:07.940 --> 00:51:10.430
people who do not have the heart of God.

779
00:51:10.880 --> 00:51:13.640
And God wants to develop us,

780
00:51:13.640 --> 00:51:16.790
because in developing us we become more like Him.

781
00:51:16.790 --> 00:51:17.690
In developing us,

782
00:51:17.690 --> 00:51:21.020
our heart gets to be the place that it should be.

783
00:51:21.060 --> 00:51:25.580
And fourth and final, we need to develop a generous heart.

784
00:51:26.630 --> 00:51:27.720
A generous --

785
00:51:27.720 --> 00:51:28.520
excuse me, a grateful heart.

786
00:51:28.530 --> 00:51:31.020
We need to develop a grateful heart.

787
00:51:31.700 --> 00:51:33.960
And the book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 15 again.

788
00:51:34.200 --> 00:51:36.990
This is kind of the constitution, The Book of Deuteronomy

789
00:51:36.990 --> 00:51:40.410
that God is giving His people who have come out of slavery.

790
00:51:40.410 --> 00:51:44.160
They were in bondage to Pharaoh and God has brought them out of slavery.

791
00:51:44.200 --> 00:51:48.080
Now He's establishing a new nation, a new culture, a new way of life.

792
00:51:48.090 --> 00:51:50.880
So there's all these rules, all these rules that are happening here

793
00:51:50.880 --> 00:51:52.180
and people like, "I don't know the Old Testement.".

794
00:51:53.040 --> 00:51:56.760
Well, these are unique rules for a culture that God was birthing.

795
00:51:56.970 --> 00:52:01.890
And many of these rules, many of
these principles translate even to modern America

796
00:52:01.890 --> 00:52:04.830
because we're still God's people if we're
in a relationship with Him through Jesus.

797
00:52:05.210 --> 00:52:06.900
And so we can look back there and see

798
00:52:06.900 --> 00:52:09.660
the kind of culture God kept putting into their hearts

799
00:52:09.660 --> 00:52:12.900
and seeing whether or not we want that culture in our hearts.

800
00:52:13.440 --> 00:52:15.150
In Deuteronomy 15:15, God says:

801
00:52:25.140 --> 00:52:26.490
And then he has commands.

802
00:52:27.540 --> 00:52:31.140
But the basis of every instruction God has for us,

803
00:52:31.140 --> 00:52:37.950
all of His commands, the basis is the awareness of, "I was once a slave,"

804
00:52:37.950 --> 00:52:40.020
awareness of, "I have a lot to be grateful.".

805
00:52:40.210 --> 00:52:43.380
The awareness of, "I can't believe what God has done for me.

806
00:52:43.410 --> 00:52:46.290
I can't believe the blessings God has poured on me.".

807
00:52:46.440 --> 00:52:47.390
All of us have them.

808
00:52:47.400 --> 00:52:48.420
Let me jus tell you some of mine.

809
00:52:48.840 --> 00:52:50.070
I can't believe the woman I'm married to.

810
00:52:50.070 --> 00:52:50.700
It's amazing.

811
00:52:51.390 --> 00:52:53.910
I got married -- when I got married it was kind of like,

812
00:52:53.910 --> 00:52:55.830
"OK, I think now's the time to get married

813
00:52:55.830 --> 00:52:57.360
and you're who I'm dating so I'll take you."

814
00:52:59.360 --> 00:53:00.840
And Lib was a fine choice.

815
00:53:00.870 --> 00:53:02.940
She was a fine choice, it worked out amazingly.

816
00:53:02.970 --> 00:53:05.100
And I had no one -- no one ever told me,

817
00:53:05.100 --> 00:53:07.440
and I'm telling you right now, those of you who are dating somebody.

818
00:53:07.800 --> 00:53:10.550
I wish someone told me what I'm telling you right now though

819
00:53:10.590 --> 00:53:13.860
I didn't even have to know it, God just blessed me with the right person.

820
00:53:14.250 --> 00:53:17.340
The person you marry will double your impact or will cut it in half.

821
00:53:20.920 --> 00:53:24.850
The person you marry will double your life or they will cut it in half.

822
00:53:25.900 --> 00:53:29.830
And I married someone without even knowing that principle who doubled my life,

823
00:53:29.830 --> 00:53:32.200
who doubled my impact, because the teammate we have.

824
00:53:32.200 --> 00:53:35.100
And I think she would say the same thing about me to her.

825
00:53:35.100 --> 00:53:38.650
I'm so grateful that, God, I didn't know what the heck I was doing.

826
00:53:38.950 --> 00:53:42.880
I was in slavery to my impulses and God delivered me

827
00:53:42.880 --> 00:53:44.710
and gave me the right person at the right time.

828
00:53:45.010 --> 00:53:45.970
I'm grateful.

829
00:53:45.970 --> 00:53:49.870
I'm grateful for the incredible DNA and immune system that he has given me.

830
00:53:50.130 --> 00:53:52.060
Like, I rarely get sick, ever get sick.

831
00:53:52.060 --> 00:53:53.890
If I get -- if I call in sick,

832
00:53:53.890 --> 00:53:56.720
the staff starts to think that Armageddon is happening tomorrow,

833
00:53:56.720 --> 00:53:58.710
because end of the world because Brian never gets sick.

834
00:53:58.930 --> 00:54:00.910
It's not because I take care of myself.

835
00:54:01.120 --> 00:54:04.750
God's blessed me with an amazing immune system.

836
00:54:05.260 --> 00:54:08.350
God has blessed me with this church to be able to work here.

837
00:54:08.590 --> 00:54:10.300
I'm amazed you guys would put up with me.

838
00:54:10.420 --> 00:54:11.170
It's wonderful.

839
00:54:11.470 --> 00:54:12.010
Thank you.

840
00:54:12.040 --> 00:54:14.540
You allow Brian Tome to be Brian Tome.

841
00:54:14.560 --> 00:54:15.180
You do. [applause]

842
00:54:18.030 --> 00:54:19.530
God save me, friends.

843
00:54:19.560 --> 00:54:21.690
You gotta hear me really clearly, the idea of saved,

844
00:54:21.690 --> 00:54:24.040
I used to not like that term because people use it,

845
00:54:24.040 --> 00:54:25.840
used to freak me out, "Did get saved?

846
00:54:25.840 --> 00:54:27.480
Did you get saved, brother? You need to get saved."

847
00:54:27.480 --> 00:54:30.420
And some weird people really like that term,
but I want to be really, really clear:

848
00:54:31.590 --> 00:54:34.130
I got saved. And I'm telling you, I got saved.

849
00:54:34.130 --> 00:54:34.430
[applause].

850
00:54:35.850 --> 00:54:37.860
I was on a greased pole to hell.

851
00:54:38.970 --> 00:54:41.490
I had no redeemable qualities inside of me.

852
00:54:41.580 --> 00:54:45.050
I was -- I'm telling you, this not at you.

853
00:54:45.060 --> 00:54:48.480
I'm telling you, non-humorous, absolutely true.

854
00:54:49.350 --> 00:54:51.990
I would not want to think where my life would be right now

855
00:54:51.990 --> 00:54:52.890
if it weren't for Jesus.

856
00:54:53.910 --> 00:54:56.760
I would not. And I hope you feel the same way.

857
00:54:56.970 --> 00:55:00.960
I encourage you take an inventory of what God has blessed you with.

858
00:55:01.230 --> 00:55:02.190
What has God done in you?

859
00:55:02.190 --> 00:55:06.240
Because I promise you, you might not have all that you want to have,

860
00:55:06.240 --> 00:55:09.420
but I promise you, you have more than you could have on your own

861
00:55:10.080 --> 00:55:15.720
because God is a giver and He makes -- allows us to be grateful.

862
00:55:16.470 --> 00:55:17.240
Last verse, Psalm 103:2:

863
00:55:26.780 --> 00:55:28.550
We have to remember the benefits.

864
00:55:28.850 --> 00:55:30.410
The fact that he is a giver.

865
00:55:31.100 --> 00:55:34.430
That's His core, core identity.

866
00:55:34.460 --> 00:55:38.530
He is a giver of forgiveness, of grace, of blessings,

867
00:55:38.530 --> 00:55:41.750
of second chances, of truth, of principles.

868
00:55:42.870 --> 00:55:45.770
He's a giver, friends, we can't forget that.

869
00:55:46.490 --> 00:55:50.030
When we forget that we get outside the blessed zone.

870
00:55:50.960 --> 00:55:53.270
Here's what I see right now at Crossroads the next few weeks.

871
00:55:54.700 --> 00:56:00.910
Just as Willow Run, the plant that churned out B-24s,

872
00:56:00.910 --> 00:56:04.450
took raw material and something different came out the other end,

873
00:56:04.450 --> 00:56:06.820
I believe God is going to form you on His assembly line.

874
00:56:06.850 --> 00:56:08.010
I believe He has been forming you.

875
00:56:08.020 --> 00:56:11.080
I believe you have been in a construction process

876
00:56:11.080 --> 00:56:13.690
where God has been working on you and doing something for you

877
00:56:13.690 --> 00:56:16.600
for a long, long time and in you for a long, long time.

878
00:56:16.840 --> 00:56:20.290
Long before you ever came to Crossroads or
heard anything I said or anything else,

879
00:56:20.290 --> 00:56:22.570
He's been developing you and processing you.

880
00:56:22.570 --> 00:56:25.930
And I'm real excited because I believe this is now the step

881
00:56:25.930 --> 00:56:30.100
in the developmental process where He wants to develop you in this way.

882
00:56:30.880 --> 00:56:32.800
He wants to mold your heart.

883
00:56:32.800 --> 00:56:38.750
He wants to develop your hearts for the purposes that He has for you.

884
00:56:40.610 --> 00:56:42.500
Now we're gonna have a little reflection exercise.

885
00:56:42.530 --> 00:56:46.610
So right now at all of our sites we're going to go ahead and do that right now.

886
00:56:48.940 --> 00:56:54.440
What we're gonna do is we're going to spend the last few minutes

887
00:56:54.440 --> 00:56:58.440
just in reflection of the goodness of God.

888
00:57:00.970 --> 00:57:04.460
And as we sit in silence and reflect on His goodness,

889
00:57:04.460 --> 00:57:06.650
maybe He might say something to us.

890
00:57:06.950 --> 00:57:08.630
I don't know. I've no idea.

891
00:57:08.660 --> 00:57:10.790
Maybe there's a thought that may come through our mind

892
00:57:10.790 --> 00:57:13.880
that we think is a strange out there thought,

893
00:57:13.880 --> 00:57:16.280
but maybe it's actually God speaking to us.

894
00:57:17.310 --> 00:57:19.650
Maybe He just wants to develop us to just allow us

895
00:57:19.650 --> 00:57:24.210
to sit uninterrupted for a couple of minutes.

896
00:57:25.570 --> 00:57:28.320
And so that's what we're going to do right now to close out our time today.

897
00:57:28.320 --> 00:57:32.050
God, I thank You for being a blesser.

898
00:57:32.490 --> 00:57:36.780
You are a blesser of people, of unworthy people, including myself.

899
00:57:38.470 --> 00:57:40.360
God, would You bless us by speaking to us?

900
00:57:40.390 --> 00:57:46.010
Would You allow us to bless You by just giving You our thoughts,

901
00:57:46.010 --> 00:57:48.420
giving You our mutterings of the things that we're thankful for.

902
00:57:48.440 --> 00:57:51.530
God, hear us as we try to hear You.

903
00:58:25.920 --> 00:58:28.360
Amen. Amen.

904
00:58:28.360 --> 00:58:31.860
There, that wasn't so bad, was it?

905
00:58:33.390 --> 00:58:34.060
I'm having fun.

906
00:58:34.080 --> 00:58:35.850
I'm going to have a lot of fun in the weeks ahead.

907
00:58:36.180 --> 00:58:38.520
I've been gearing up for this one for a while.

908
00:58:39.590 --> 00:58:42.290
I don't think -- God doesn't want anything from you,

909
00:58:42.290 --> 00:58:43.400
He wants something for you.

910
00:58:44.230 --> 00:58:47.320
He wants something for you and I'll see you next week.

911
00:58:49.960 --> 00:58:51.640
- How good is that?

912
00:58:52.090 --> 00:58:56.200
I am already getting something great out of this series.

913
00:58:56.200 --> 00:58:58.510
And I know that there's so much more to come.

914
00:58:58.540 --> 00:59:02.500
And so you're not going to want to miss the rest of this series.

915
00:59:02.530 --> 00:59:04.810
Make it a point to get to a location near you

916
00:59:04.810 --> 00:59:06.910
or join us on Crossroads Anywhere.

917
00:59:07.150 --> 00:59:09.820
And don't forget, keep meeting with your group

918
00:59:09.820 --> 00:59:13.450
or maybe get into a group with some friends and do those weekend prompts,

919
00:59:13.510 --> 00:59:17.350
subscribe to that chat in the Crossroads Anywhere App.

920
00:59:17.560 --> 00:59:20.080
And we'll see you next week for week two of The Blessed Life.
Process, journal or discuss the themes of this article - here's a few questions to get the ball rolling...

Welcome to the Post-Weekend Push with Brian Tome.

  1. Time for your first Weekend Push. We’re searching for the blessed life. What does the word “blessed” mean to you? How do you know if you’re living the blessed life? (PS: Don’t steal my Disney-World-misters metaphor. You gotta find your own.)

  2. It’s storytime. The Bible says it’s “more blessed to give than receive.” Everyone share a time in your life when you were on the giving end of generosity. What impact did that make on your life?

  3. I said this weekend that I’d been a weenie boy for avoiding the topic of generosity. What is your experience with the mixing of church and money? Acknowledging the past, good or bad, frees us up so that we can move forward to a new place.

  4. God is a giver. Psalm 103 tells us to “forget not his benefits.” Make a list. What has God given you? Use this list to push you into new territory with him today. You can trust him.

  5. There are four hearts we can have toward generosity:

    A greedy heart (MINE!)

    A grieving heart (why did I give?)

    A generous heart (I’ll give because God says to)

    A grateful heart (I give because God has rescued me)

    Examine yourself honestly. Where do you fall right now? Where would you like to be 5 weeks from now?
