Breaking the Spirit of Mammon | The Blessed Life: Week 4

You may have heard the phrase “money is the root of all evil” but is that actually true? If you’ve felt like the grip of money has been on your life for far too long, this week is for you.

1
00:00:00.570 --> 00:00:01.680
Welcome to Crossroads.

2
00:00:01.770 --> 00:00:05.180
My name is Lena Schuler, I'm the Crossroads Anywhere Community Pastor.

3
00:00:05.270 --> 00:00:08.160
We're so glad to have you as part of our church today

4
00:00:08.160 --> 00:00:10.320
from anywhere you might be joining us from.

5
00:00:10.540 --> 00:00:13.470
We're in a series right now called The Blessed Life.

6
00:00:13.800 --> 00:00:17.840
And I have just been so blessed by this series.

7
00:00:17.850 --> 00:00:19.620
I've really been energized by it.

8
00:00:19.650 --> 00:00:21.960
And I hope that you have been too.

9
00:00:22.170 --> 00:00:25.260
And today is actually a really special day for our church

10
00:00:25.260 --> 00:00:28.410
because we have baptisms happening in all of our locations

11
00:00:28.410 --> 00:00:31.290
and across many of our communities in the country.

12
00:00:31.290 --> 00:00:34.650
People who have decided to publicly declare their faith in Jesus.

13
00:00:34.890 --> 00:00:37.410
And so more of that to come and a little bit.

14
00:00:37.560 --> 00:00:39.690
We'll hear more context for that.

15
00:00:39.720 --> 00:00:44.660
And we'll actually get to see people who are
being baptized in one of our locations today.

16
00:00:45.150 --> 00:00:46.620
If you would like to be baptized,

17
00:00:46.620 --> 00:00:49.740
you can chat with us on the Crossroads Web site, Crossroads.net.

18
00:00:50.130 --> 00:00:54.150
And we would love to get you connected to other people near you

19
00:00:54.150 --> 00:00:56.160
in order for you to be baptized.

20
00:00:56.490 --> 00:00:59.040
Right now, we're going to spend some time worshipping together.

21
00:00:59.280 --> 00:01:03.930
So why don't you turn the volume up and sing with us as we worship.

22
00:05:06.170 --> 00:05:08.690
Well, we're going to do something special this weekend

23
00:05:08.690 --> 00:05:10.790
at all of our different sites and all the services.

24
00:05:11.070 --> 00:05:13.130
We're having people get baptized.

25
00:05:13.770 --> 00:05:14.120
Yeah.

26
00:05:14.660 --> 00:05:15.650
What does that mean?

27
00:05:15.980 --> 00:05:18.320
A major theme throughout the entire Bible

28
00:05:18.320 --> 00:05:19.610
we're going to talk about a little bit later

29
00:05:19.610 --> 00:05:23.870
is the theme of freedom, going from bondage into freedom,

30
00:05:23.870 --> 00:05:26.900
going from slavery and going into life.

31
00:05:27.590 --> 00:05:31.160
And baptism recognizes that all of us by nature

32
00:05:31.160 --> 00:05:34.670
are enslaved to our own lust, our own passions, our own sin.

33
00:05:34.670 --> 00:05:36.950
And Jesus is the one who sets us free.

34
00:05:37.250 --> 00:05:40.700
Jesus goes up on the Cross and He dies for all of my sins,

35
00:05:40.700 --> 00:05:42.950
are transferred to his account while He's on a Cross.

36
00:05:43.340 --> 00:05:46.340
And all of His righteousness is transferred to my account

37
00:05:46.340 --> 00:05:48.230
or your account whenever you receive Him.

38
00:05:48.870 --> 00:05:52.750
And so someone gets baptized when they have received Christ

39
00:05:52.750 --> 00:05:55.250
and they go into what's known as a watery grave,

40
00:05:55.250 --> 00:05:57.440
just as Jesus was placed in a grave

41
00:05:57.440 --> 00:06:00.560
and then came back with power three days later.

42
00:06:00.560 --> 00:06:04.430
So too, we go voluntarily inside the watery grave

43
00:06:04.430 --> 00:06:05.510
and we come back out.

44
00:06:05.690 --> 00:06:08.540
We come out with a new sense of power.

45
00:06:08.550 --> 00:06:10.440
This is what baptism is.

46
00:06:10.440 --> 00:06:13.700
This is what's happening in all the lives that you're going to see today.

47
00:06:13.990 --> 00:06:16.390
And we're gonna hear one story of a woman who was,

48
00:06:16.390 --> 00:06:17.870
gosh, who just four weeks ago,

49
00:06:17.870 --> 00:06:20.570
like zero church engagement or God engagement at all.

50
00:06:20.840 --> 00:06:22.910
And just happened to pop in a Crossroads.

51
00:06:23.670 --> 00:06:24.710
Let's listen to her story.

52
00:06:27.580 --> 00:06:30.880
- My husband and I have spotted Crossroads Eastgate.

53
00:06:30.910 --> 00:06:34.510
And I asked him if he would like to check it out with me.

54
00:06:34.790 --> 00:06:38.500
It really surprised him because I've never asked to go to church.

55
00:06:38.890 --> 00:06:40.200
I don't know what is that drew me there.

56
00:06:40.960 --> 00:06:43.390
I have to say it was Jesus.

57
00:06:44.470 --> 00:06:47.980
Like, I have a crazy need to be there and I have no idea why.

58
00:06:48.520 --> 00:06:51.790
So we went the following Saturday to our first service

59
00:06:51.790 --> 00:06:53.740
and that was a communion service.

60
00:06:54.360 --> 00:06:58.570
The communion was completely bizarre, totally foreign and awkward.

61
00:06:58.930 --> 00:07:02.500
Awkward and wonderful all at the same time.

62
00:07:02.950 --> 00:07:06.760
I mean, there were so many emotions, like so many emotions

63
00:07:06.760 --> 00:07:12.190
I think because I've been so bad and I have so much sin

64
00:07:12.190 --> 00:07:14.950
and I didn't live my life right at all,

65
00:07:14.950 --> 00:07:22.980
I feel like I was really releasing a lot of sin and a lot of sorrow.

66
00:07:23.620 --> 00:07:28.690
That was that was the moment that made me want to come back for more.

67
00:07:29.620 --> 00:07:34.660
It just blew my mind that it was really lifted up off me

68
00:07:34.660 --> 00:07:36.280
because I didn't think that was possible.

69
00:07:37.450 --> 00:07:43.090
I want to get baptized because I think it will be a amazing start

70
00:07:43.090 --> 00:07:46.510
to acceptance I'll find in myself will be something

71
00:07:46.510 --> 00:07:48.130
I can't even comprehend right now.

72
00:07:48.550 --> 00:07:52.060
That God I was so scared of is the one that sets me free.

73
00:07:52.450 --> 00:07:52.900
What?

74
00:07:53.740 --> 00:07:57.940
I want more of that knowledge and freedom of walking with Jesus.

75
00:07:58.670 --> 00:08:00.400
I mean I couldn't ask for anything better than that.

76
00:08:00.470 --> 00:08:00.740
You know?

77
00:14:07.240 --> 00:14:12.700
- As a church, we believe that we are meant to care for people in need.

78
00:14:12.940 --> 00:14:17.410
We believe that part of being a representation of Jesus

79
00:14:17.410 --> 00:14:20.350
means that we are a blessing to our local communities,

80
00:14:20.350 --> 00:14:24.220
to families and individuals and organizations right near us.

81
00:14:24.490 --> 00:14:28.590
And so this is going to be the 24th year that as a church

82
00:14:28.590 --> 00:14:31.450
we've participated in the Thanksgiving food drive.

83
00:14:31.720 --> 00:14:33.790
And so if that's something you want to do,

84
00:14:33.790 --> 00:14:36.520
if you recognize, man, God has blessed me

85
00:14:36.520 --> 00:14:38.560
and I want to be a blessing to other people

86
00:14:38.560 --> 00:14:40.930
in the midst of this holiday season,

87
00:14:40.930 --> 00:14:44.020
we would love for you to participate in the Thanksgiving food drive.

88
00:14:44.350 --> 00:14:46.930
If you live near a Crossroads location,

89
00:14:46.930 --> 00:14:51.310
you can head to one of those locations and pick up a box and a list

90
00:14:51.310 --> 00:14:54.220
and do the Thanksgiving food drive with your local community.

91
00:14:54.490 --> 00:14:57.080
And if you don't live near Crossroads location,

92
00:14:57.080 --> 00:14:59.800
then you can still participate in the Thanksgiving food drive.

93
00:14:59.860 --> 00:15:01.240
It's actually really simple.

94
00:15:01.510 --> 00:15:05.080
First you pick an organization or a family

95
00:15:05.080 --> 00:15:07.510
that needs a Thanksgiving meal this year.

96
00:15:07.960 --> 00:15:12.160
Second, you contact them and say, "I'd like to give you a meal."

97
00:15:12.610 --> 00:15:14.380
Third, you buy a box.

98
00:15:14.440 --> 00:15:18.850
Fourth, you fill the box with a list of foods

99
00:15:18.850 --> 00:15:21.420
that we actually have for you on the Crossroads Web site.

100
00:15:21.670 --> 00:15:25.600
And then fifth, you actually get to deliver that box to them

101
00:15:25.600 --> 00:15:30.280
so that they get to have a fantastic Thanksgiving experience

102
00:15:30.280 --> 00:15:33.880
around a table with great food and friends and family.

103
00:15:34.210 --> 00:15:37.090
And so we would love to have you as part of this.

104
00:15:37.300 --> 00:15:41.650
There will be over 14,000 families around the country

105
00:15:41.650 --> 00:15:46.150
that will get to partake in a better Thanksgiving experience

106
00:15:46.150 --> 00:15:48.730
because of generous and loving people

107
00:15:48.730 --> 00:15:50.410
that are part of the Crossroads community.

108
00:15:50.410 --> 00:15:51.740
And you could be one of those people.

109
00:15:51.850 --> 00:15:55.210
So we'd love to help you do this and celebrate that you're doing this.

110
00:15:55.240 --> 00:15:58.960
And so you can click on the chat button on the Crossroads Web site

111
00:15:58.960 --> 00:16:01.600
and we'll get you started in the Thanksgiving food drive.

112
00:16:02.380 --> 00:16:06.910
And, you know, one of the other things that we do as a church is we go.

113
00:16:07.120 --> 00:16:10.720
And I want you to get to experience another culture,

114
00:16:10.720 --> 00:16:13.930
another group of people, and go on an adventure.

115
00:16:24.600 --> 00:16:27.490
- A Go Trip is about going.

116
00:16:29.440 --> 00:16:31.120
Going outside your comfort zone.

117
00:16:32.950 --> 00:16:34.420
Going to a new place.

118
00:16:35.770 --> 00:16:37.870
Going beyond normal.

119
00:16:37.870 --> 00:16:40.660
Going where you want to go instead of where you've been.

120
00:16:42.310 --> 00:16:45.760
Your normal life is getting you as far as you can go.

121
00:16:46.330 --> 00:16:47.620
And where are you going right now?

122
00:16:47.650 --> 00:16:49.090
You're going the way of normal.

123
00:16:50.950 --> 00:16:53.920
If you want to go further than you are right now,

124
00:16:53.920 --> 00:16:56.860
you have to go outside of what you're comfortable with.

125
00:16:57.780 --> 00:17:01.870
That is the role of Go Trips, they're beyond normal.

126
00:17:02.140 --> 00:17:06.400
They stretch you, they push you, they give you actual capacity.

127
00:17:07.920 --> 00:17:10.980
Muscles you didn't have beforehand

128
00:17:10.980 --> 00:17:15.060
that now can take your normal life beyond the normal

129
00:17:15.060 --> 00:17:16.590
and you get to help people.

130
00:17:17.250 --> 00:17:20.730
You get to take on actual physical problems

131
00:17:20.730 --> 00:17:23.160
and make a difference in somebody else's life

132
00:17:23.160 --> 00:17:26.010
and the trajectory of their family and their village.

133
00:17:27.600 --> 00:17:31.350
People you encounter will be changed because you stepped out

134
00:17:31.350 --> 00:17:33.290
and you went on a Go Trip.

135
00:17:34.630 --> 00:17:36.280
Let's Go.

136
00:17:37.190 --> 00:17:40.490
- You could go somewhere in 2020.

137
00:17:40.580 --> 00:17:43.420
We have trips happening all over the world.

138
00:17:43.430 --> 00:17:47.930
In Bolivia, South Africa, India, New Orleans and more.

139
00:17:48.260 --> 00:17:52.160
You know, I came back from South Africa a few years ago different.

140
00:17:52.310 --> 00:17:58.190
I came back a different person with all kinds of amazing memories

141
00:17:58.190 --> 00:18:02.000
and just feeling more adventurous and closer to God.

142
00:18:02.000 --> 00:18:03.800
And I want that for you.

143
00:18:03.810 --> 00:18:06.890
And I want you to make new friends in the midst of this, too.

144
00:18:07.160 --> 00:18:09.950
And so if you want to sign up for a Go Trip,

145
00:18:09.950 --> 00:18:12.500
don't let money be the reason that you don't do this.

146
00:18:12.830 --> 00:18:16.460
You would be surprised at how God shows up

147
00:18:16.460 --> 00:18:20.870
and the ways that you might end up being blessed in the midst of this.

148
00:18:21.200 --> 00:18:25.460
And if you're looking for a way to meet other people from your church,

149
00:18:25.460 --> 00:18:27.800
you're looking for a way to involve your friends

150
00:18:27.800 --> 00:18:29.810
in something that's part of the church.

151
00:18:29.910 --> 00:18:32.840
A Go Trip might just be the right thing for you.

152
00:18:32.840 --> 00:18:35.540
So you can head to Crossroads.net/go

153
00:18:35.540 --> 00:18:38.240
to see all of the trips that are happening in 2020

154
00:18:38.240 --> 00:18:41.150
and actually sign up to go somewhere.

155
00:18:41.720 --> 00:18:45.440
As a team we go and as a team we give.

156
00:18:45.710 --> 00:18:47.930
And if you are new to Crossroads,

157
00:18:47.930 --> 00:18:50.340
you're just joining us on Crossroads Anywhere,

158
00:18:50.340 --> 00:18:52.310
we are so glad to have you.

159
00:18:52.370 --> 00:18:54.350
No pressure at all here.

160
00:18:54.600 --> 00:18:56.750
But if you're part of the team and you want to give,

161
00:18:56.750 --> 00:18:59.900
you can do that by heading to Crossroads.net/give.

162
00:19:00.210 --> 00:19:02.420
And in the midst of this Blessed Life series,

163
00:19:02.420 --> 00:19:04.880
we've been talking about how God blesses us.

164
00:19:05.120 --> 00:19:07.820
Sometimes He blesses us financially

165
00:19:07.820 --> 00:19:11.000
and other times He blesses us in completely different ways.

166
00:19:13.520 --> 00:19:18.080
- From a young age, my mom taught me that tithing is just what you do.

167
00:19:18.080 --> 00:19:19.730
You just take 10 percent off the top.

168
00:19:20.210 --> 00:19:23.690
You tithe that and then 90 percent is yours.

169
00:19:24.080 --> 00:19:25.580
And I was always doing that.

170
00:19:25.640 --> 00:19:28.790
And it started to become kind of dry for me because

171
00:19:28.790 --> 00:19:31.070
it was just something I did, it was just obedience thing.

172
00:19:31.730 --> 00:19:34.370
And after doing that for some time,

173
00:19:34.370 --> 00:19:36.890
we did the Obsessed Journey here at Crossroads.

174
00:19:36.920 --> 00:19:40.480
And I believe it was March of 2018.

175
00:19:40.480 --> 00:19:44.150
And the Obsessed Journey showed me,

176
00:19:44.150 --> 00:19:46.670
"I don't know if I totally trust you with my money, God.

177
00:19:46.670 --> 00:19:48.370
I'm doing this, you know, 10 percent.

178
00:19:48.530 --> 00:19:49.190
It's cool.

179
00:19:49.190 --> 00:19:49.820
I'll give it to you."

180
00:19:51.760 --> 00:19:55.060
My dad has not been in my family for quite some time,

181
00:19:55.060 --> 00:19:58.840
and seeing God as a father has been kind of a difficult thing for me.

182
00:19:59.780 --> 00:20:04.010
After doing that journey, we had to open our finances

183
00:20:04.010 --> 00:20:06.800
and kind of ask some type of questions within our small groups

184
00:20:06.800 --> 00:20:10.820
and ask the Lord, "What is an uncomfortable amount

185
00:20:10.820 --> 00:20:12.380
for me to start giving?"

186
00:20:12.380 --> 00:20:14.300
God asked me for 20 percent gross.

187
00:20:16.810 --> 00:20:19.780
I said, "How about 15?

188
00:20:20.310 --> 00:20:21.160
How about 15?

189
00:20:21.160 --> 00:20:24.570
Meet me in the middle and we'll just do 15."

190
00:20:26.700 --> 00:20:28.380
God said, no, thanks.

191
00:20:28.920 --> 00:20:30.340
He asked for 20 percent.

192
00:20:30.990 --> 00:20:34.110
And so I just said, "That makes me uncomfortable."

193
00:20:34.110 --> 00:20:35.480
But I said, OK.

194
00:20:36.270 --> 00:20:37.920
I'm not going to sugarcoat it.

195
00:20:38.310 --> 00:20:39.420
It didn't feel good in the beginning.

196
00:20:39.540 --> 00:20:43.920
I lived paycheck to paycheck and I grew every single day.

197
00:20:44.430 --> 00:20:48.690
I kind of started to trust God a lot more because

198
00:20:48.690 --> 00:20:50.670
it wasn't just I'll trust Him in prayer.

199
00:20:51.090 --> 00:20:53.400
It was I'm going to take action.

200
00:20:53.460 --> 00:20:54.440
I'll trust Him with my money.

201
00:20:54.450 --> 00:20:55.860
I'll put my money where my mouth is.

202
00:20:56.490 --> 00:21:02.720
What I saw was that in the midst of God asking more of me,

203
00:21:02.720 --> 00:21:07.070
I saw the Lord double what I was making in a year.

204
00:21:09.130 --> 00:21:11.170
It was not one paycheck.

205
00:21:11.410 --> 00:21:13.540
It was not all of a sudden.

206
00:21:14.440 --> 00:21:17.170
It was just these incremental gains.

207
00:21:17.890 --> 00:21:23.530
He used my relationships and my money in much more effective ways

208
00:21:23.530 --> 00:21:26.140
than I could have ever thought to use them myself.

209
00:21:26.170 --> 00:21:29.080
Whether it was a smaller car payment,

210
00:21:29.080 --> 00:21:32.380
because I was able to refinance it or get a cheaper vehicle.

211
00:21:32.380 --> 00:21:36.220
Whether it was moving into a place that was a little bit less expensive

212
00:21:36.220 --> 00:21:39.130
and finding a roommate to share the place.

213
00:21:39.130 --> 00:21:42.760
Bringing people into my life as coaches and mentors.

214
00:21:43.510 --> 00:21:45.520
I've just seen God really come through.

215
00:21:45.520 --> 00:21:49.890
And not just a finding a check on the ground kind of way,

216
00:21:49.920 --> 00:21:53.530
winning the lottery kind of way, but a lot more practical,

217
00:21:53.530 --> 00:21:56.130
a lot more day to day learning.

218
00:21:56.470 --> 00:22:00.760
Finding people that can guide me and coach me in specific ways.

219
00:22:01.360 --> 00:22:05.110
I've seen God really orchestrate my life

220
00:22:05.110 --> 00:22:06.660
once I've started to be obedient.

221
00:22:07.120 --> 00:22:13.330
Tithing for me was an entry point into the generous life,

222
00:22:13.330 --> 00:22:18.910
that once I was kind of fulfilling the obligation of tithing

223
00:22:18.910 --> 00:22:23.350
to give the 10 percent that it changed the way I looked at money,

224
00:22:23.350 --> 00:22:29.290
that money lost its weight in only being a servant to myself.

225
00:22:29.800 --> 00:22:33.070
And I've seen God come through as a good Father.

226
00:22:35.480 --> 00:22:38.340
- I want to go relatively deep today.

227
00:22:38.380 --> 00:22:39.530
Can we do that today?

228
00:22:39.560 --> 00:22:40.820
Can we do that?

229
00:22:41.040 --> 00:22:42.200
It doesn't matter if you want to or not?

230
00:22:42.220 --> 00:22:43.310
I'm going to do it anyway.

231
00:22:44.560 --> 00:22:47.750
I'm going to give us a big, big little macro over the whole Bible.

232
00:22:47.960 --> 00:22:51.080
A macro thing of the message of the Bible,

233
00:22:51.080 --> 00:22:53.600
which is about us being in slavery

234
00:22:53.600 --> 00:22:55.550
and then us being free.

235
00:22:55.840 --> 00:23:00.380
Or us being oppressed and then us having liberty.

236
00:23:00.410 --> 00:23:02.780
This is a theme that goes throughout the whole Bible,

237
00:23:02.780 --> 00:23:05.000
Old Testament and New Testament.

238
00:23:05.240 --> 00:23:08.780
And it's a theme that's regularly understood for those who are blessed.

239
00:23:08.780 --> 00:23:12.740
The blessed life is when there is a zone, you understand the zone

240
00:23:12.740 --> 00:23:17.610
like a rainforest, and you understand that in this place

241
00:23:17.610 --> 00:23:21.410
there's moisture, there's vitality, there is growth.

242
00:23:21.740 --> 00:23:26.180
And when we get outside of the place where God dwells,

243
00:23:26.180 --> 00:23:29.150
the blessings don't come as quickly

244
00:23:29.150 --> 00:23:31.340
because we're outside of where that zone is.

245
00:23:31.340 --> 00:23:33.770
The blessed life is understanding where God wants us,

246
00:23:33.770 --> 00:23:37.490
where God is, and doing what we need to do

247
00:23:37.490 --> 00:23:39.320
to experience all that He has for us

248
00:23:39.320 --> 00:23:42.140
I'm going to pray about that before we go any further today.

249
00:23:42.140 --> 00:23:44.840
So God help me to be clear today.

250
00:23:45.050 --> 00:23:46.480
Help me to be helpful.

251
00:23:46.490 --> 00:23:50.300
Help me to help all of us see You

252
00:23:50.300 --> 00:23:54.860
and Your amazing weighty character in new ways,

253
00:23:54.860 --> 00:23:56.300
ways that we haven't seen before,

254
00:23:56.300 --> 00:24:00.050
in ways that could totally change our life right here and now.

255
00:24:00.560 --> 00:24:05.810
Thanks, God, for just the privilege of talking about weighty concepts,

256
00:24:05.810 --> 00:24:07.130
amazing concepts that are going to happen today.

257
00:24:07.160 --> 00:24:12.670
I pray these things according to the character and identity of Jesus.

258
00:24:12.670 --> 00:24:13.040
Amen.

259
00:24:16.390 --> 00:24:19.780
So the Bible is a very complex book.

260
00:24:19.810 --> 00:24:21.010
We have Old Testament.

261
00:24:21.040 --> 00:24:22.300
We have New Testament.

262
00:24:22.690 --> 00:24:25.170
And themes go through Old and New Testaments.

263
00:24:25.170 --> 00:24:28.540
Some things in the Old Testament, the Testament before Jesus came around

264
00:24:28.540 --> 00:24:30.010
that are not relevant for us.

265
00:24:30.220 --> 00:24:32.650
Other things that are in the Old Testament

266
00:24:32.650 --> 00:24:35.290
are giving us a precursor, a preparation

267
00:24:35.290 --> 00:24:38.350
for all that would be experienced in the New Testament and today.

268
00:24:38.890 --> 00:24:42.790
One of them is the understanding of slavery to freedom.

269
00:24:43.030 --> 00:24:46.780
So in the Old Testament, we have a common theme of slavery

270
00:24:46.780 --> 00:24:47.650
in the nation of Israel.

271
00:24:47.900 --> 00:24:50.530
They're enslaved to the nation of Egypt.

272
00:24:51.160 --> 00:24:54.460
And while in slavery, God comes to an emancipator.

273
00:24:54.730 --> 00:24:56.290
His name is Moses.

274
00:24:56.500 --> 00:24:59.830
He is going to be the savior, if you will,

275
00:24:59.830 --> 00:25:00.850
of the nation of Israel.

276
00:25:01.060 --> 00:25:04.510
And he is going to lead them out of slavery.

277
00:25:04.510 --> 00:25:07.360
And all kind of weird spiritual stuff was happening

278
00:25:07.360 --> 00:25:10.600
because there's a spiritual realm that's operating

279
00:25:10.600 --> 00:25:12.790
throughout the world and all time.

280
00:25:13.480 --> 00:25:16.030
And we see glimpses of this as Moses

281
00:25:16.030 --> 00:25:18.390
is trying to bring the nation of Israel to freedom.

282
00:25:18.640 --> 00:25:22.000
He sees the burning bush and an angel talks with Moses.

283
00:25:22.020 --> 00:25:25.150
God gives him the ability to do supernatural things

284
00:25:25.150 --> 00:25:27.220
like take a staff, throw it on the ground

285
00:25:27.220 --> 00:25:30.210
and it turns into a snake to try to impress Pharaoh,

286
00:25:30.210 --> 00:25:32.110
who's the leader of the Egyptians.

287
00:25:32.380 --> 00:25:34.990
He gives Moses the ability to take his hand,

288
00:25:34.990 --> 00:25:37.360
put it into his coat, pull it out, it's got leprosy.

289
00:25:37.360 --> 00:25:39.400
Put it back in and put out, it's healed.

290
00:25:39.400 --> 00:25:42.400
And he does these things to try to get Pharaoh's attention

291
00:25:42.400 --> 00:25:45.130
that the God who is is about to do something.

292
00:25:45.430 --> 00:25:48.400
And through these spiritual things, like there's magicians

293
00:25:48.400 --> 00:25:51.030
and spiritualists are trying to replicate these things.

294
00:25:51.040 --> 00:25:52.520
It's an incredibly spiritual story.

295
00:25:52.810 --> 00:25:55.840
On the surface, it looks like an emancipation story,

296
00:25:55.840 --> 00:25:58.420
but it's really a spiritual realm story.

297
00:25:58.660 --> 00:26:04.630
And Moses takes the nation of Israel across the Red Sea and into freedom.

298
00:26:04.960 --> 00:26:08.560
Moses is a prefigure,

299
00:26:08.560 --> 00:26:12.910
or also known the theological circles as a type of Jesus.

300
00:26:13.690 --> 00:26:18.760
Jesus is the Savior, the emancipator for the entire world

301
00:26:18.760 --> 00:26:21.820
in the way that Moses was the savior, emancipator

302
00:26:21.820 --> 00:26:22.900
for the nation of Israel.

303
00:26:23.140 --> 00:26:25.520
And when we understand this,

304
00:26:25.520 --> 00:26:27.280
all of Jesus teachings start to make sense

305
00:26:27.280 --> 00:26:29.710
because what He's trying do is He's trying to emancipate you and I.

306
00:26:29.710 --> 00:26:31.760
He's trying to get us out of our hangups.

307
00:26:31.900 --> 00:26:33.520
He's trying to get us out of our enslavement.

308
00:26:33.550 --> 00:26:37.660
He's trying to get us out of our petty preoccupations.

309
00:26:37.810 --> 00:26:39.490
He's trying to get us out of our addictions.

310
00:26:39.490 --> 00:26:42.790
He's trying to get us out of our our futility in our mind,

311
00:26:42.790 --> 00:26:46.600
thinking that we can live our life without the Creator who made us.

312
00:26:47.080 --> 00:26:49.600
All of His teachings, all His miracles are for this.

313
00:26:50.260 --> 00:26:53.860
So in the Book of Luke 16:9 and following,

314
00:26:53.860 --> 00:26:56.680
I"m going to read it you, Jesus is going to talk about mammon.

315
00:26:57.150 --> 00:26:59.300
No, not gluten, mammon.

316
00:26:59.470 --> 00:27:02.560
I mean, there's those two entirely different things.

317
00:27:02.600 --> 00:27:03.730
We're going to talk about mammon.

318
00:27:04.180 --> 00:27:06.400
And a lot of times when we read these verses

319
00:27:06.400 --> 00:27:07.540
or different translations,

320
00:27:07.540 --> 00:27:10.320
they insert the word money in for mammon.

321
00:27:10.630 --> 00:27:12.640
They're very close, but not the same.

322
00:27:12.670 --> 00:27:16.050
Let's just listen to what Jesus says as He uses this word mammon.

323
00:27:16.120 --> 00:27:16.700
Here he says:.

324
00:28:00.910 --> 00:28:02.750
You cannot serve God and mammon.

325
00:28:02.770 --> 00:28:04.690
Jesus is saying it's not possible.

326
00:28:05.470 --> 00:28:08.470
If you want God, you can't have mammon in the center of your life.

327
00:28:08.500 --> 00:28:10.420
If you want the weightiness of God,

328
00:28:10.420 --> 00:28:12.160
you can't want the weightiness of men.

329
00:28:12.160 --> 00:28:13.780
What? Okay fine, Brian.

330
00:28:13.780 --> 00:28:15.110
What is this? gluten mammon thing?

331
00:28:15.110 --> 00:28:16.360
Is this some new diet?

332
00:28:16.540 --> 00:28:18.700
Mammon is a spirit.

333
00:28:19.420 --> 00:28:20.440
Mammon is a spirit.

334
00:28:20.650 --> 00:28:22.510
This is the only time,

335
00:28:22.510 --> 00:28:25.990
Jesus is the only one who uses the word mammon in the entire Bible.

336
00:28:26.860 --> 00:28:29.590
It's like He's putting a name on something.

337
00:28:29.590 --> 00:28:33.190
There's all kinds of theories as to what exactly mammon is.

338
00:28:33.550 --> 00:28:34.810
It's an Aramaic word.

339
00:28:34.810 --> 00:28:38.770
Some say it traces to an Aramaic word, which means riches.

340
00:28:39.970 --> 00:28:44.860
Others look at it at mammon being, quote, unquote, the thing you trust in.

341
00:28:45.220 --> 00:28:46.540
Mammon is a thing you trust in.

342
00:28:47.170 --> 00:28:49.240
But Mammon is a spirit.

343
00:28:49.270 --> 00:28:50.620
It is an entity.

344
00:28:50.860 --> 00:28:52.540
It has the personality.

345
00:28:52.800 --> 00:28:56.290
And to understand Jesus words, we have to see it this way,

346
00:28:56.290 --> 00:28:59.650
that it's not just some currency.

347
00:29:00.070 --> 00:29:02.770
It's something that wants to have a power over us.

348
00:29:03.310 --> 00:29:07.540
And could we just say that while money isn't exactly mammon,

349
00:29:07.540 --> 00:29:09.250
money has a power over us.

350
00:29:09.880 --> 00:29:13.090
Do we think it's really accidental that we put

351
00:29:13.090 --> 00:29:16.120
on our dollar bills and our currency "in God we trust"?

352
00:29:17.240 --> 00:29:19.280
Of course, it's in God we trust,

353
00:29:19.280 --> 00:29:21.530
and mammon says our almighty dollar

354
00:29:21.530 --> 00:29:24.140
is the almighty God of our life,

355
00:29:24.140 --> 00:29:27.440
because money dictates my happiness for many of us.

356
00:29:27.440 --> 00:29:28.760
Money dictates my security.

357
00:29:28.760 --> 00:29:32.380
Money dictates my friendship choices.

358
00:29:32.390 --> 00:29:36.470
How many of us have friends and economic classes above us or beneath us?

359
00:29:37.240 --> 00:29:38.900
Normally it's just right where we are.

360
00:29:39.050 --> 00:29:41.780
How many of us have bad attitudes about people

361
00:29:41.780 --> 00:29:43.490
who have less money than us,

362
00:29:43.490 --> 00:29:44.750
we think they made bad decisions

363
00:29:44.750 --> 00:29:46.520
and therefore they're just not very smart?

364
00:29:46.520 --> 00:29:47.950
Or how many of us have a bad attitude about people

365
00:29:47.950 --> 00:29:49.940
that have more money than us who we assume

366
00:29:49.940 --> 00:29:52.130
they have no character and they've cheated

367
00:29:52.130 --> 00:29:53.690
or twisted things to get where they are?

368
00:29:54.050 --> 00:29:55.670
Why do we think these things?

369
00:29:56.870 --> 00:29:59.900
Because mammon messes with us,

370
00:29:59.900 --> 00:30:02.960
and Jesus coming, is it a spirit, it's an entity.

371
00:30:04.130 --> 00:30:07.070
Just like there were entities, spiritual entities,

372
00:30:07.070 --> 00:30:08.030
way back with Moses.

373
00:30:08.240 --> 00:30:12.740
So today there are entities that are trying to enslave us,

374
00:30:12.740 --> 00:30:14.540
trying to keep us from having the life that God wants.

375
00:30:15.290 --> 00:30:18.290
When we look the prosperity gospel, which is just awful,

376
00:30:18.290 --> 00:30:20.190
this idea that the prosperity gospel,

377
00:30:20.190 --> 00:30:24.320
this idea that God wants everyone to have money and health

378
00:30:24.320 --> 00:30:26.030
and everyone will have money in health,

379
00:30:26.030 --> 00:30:27.530
if you're just blessed by God.

380
00:30:27.740 --> 00:30:30.560
And the way you get that is by giving money to somebody.

381
00:30:31.220 --> 00:30:35.450
This is mammon speaking to certain preachers

382
00:30:35.450 --> 00:30:37.100
to manipulate and twist.

383
00:30:37.130 --> 00:30:37.820
This is not true.

384
00:30:37.850 --> 00:30:40.930
There are amazing godly people all over the world

385
00:30:40.930 --> 00:30:44.150
and all through all of creation and all of history

386
00:30:44.150 --> 00:30:46.550
who have had not health nor had wealth,

387
00:30:46.550 --> 00:30:48.710
yet walked very, very close with God.

388
00:30:49.300 --> 00:30:51.830
But mammon deludes some of us into believing

389
00:30:51.830 --> 00:30:55.430
that we can control God by giving us certain things

390
00:30:55.430 --> 00:30:57.260
if only we give more money away.

391
00:30:57.260 --> 00:30:59.000
it doesn't work that way.

392
00:31:00.160 --> 00:31:03.400
The Antichrist in the Book of Revelation

393
00:31:03.400 --> 00:31:05.560
is seen not as bringing nuclear wars.

394
00:31:05.560 --> 00:31:09.250
The Antichrist is seeing as controlling currency

395
00:31:09.250 --> 00:31:11.410
and causing us to be afraid about whether or not

396
00:31:11.410 --> 00:31:15.990
we will be able to buy and sell thing,

397
00:31:15.990 --> 00:31:17.400
that's because mammon is a liar.

398
00:31:17.550 --> 00:31:20.370
It's a spiritual entity, the personality that actually lies.

399
00:31:20.700 --> 00:31:22.650
And how I know that is this:

400
00:31:22.650 --> 00:31:25.500
we believe that money is going to solve our problems.

401
00:31:25.710 --> 00:31:27.750
We believe that money can make me happy.

402
00:31:27.750 --> 00:31:29.880
We believe that money can bring me joy.

403
00:31:30.630 --> 00:31:34.740
Realize that of all the people Jesus interacted with

404
00:31:34.740 --> 00:31:39.360
who had hang-ups and addictions and issues

405
00:31:39.360 --> 00:31:41.620
and all kinds of maladies and all kind of loneliness,.

406
00:31:42.210 --> 00:31:46.520
he never once said, "Dud, you just need some more money.

407
00:31:46.520 --> 00:31:48.150
You just need some Ben Franklin's. That's what you need.

408
00:31:48.700 --> 00:31:50.280
You you need something -- That's all you need.

409
00:31:50.520 --> 00:31:51.990
Oh, I see your problem.

410
00:31:52.040 --> 00:31:53.040
Oh, I see.

411
00:31:53.040 --> 00:31:54.420
Oh, I'm going to get you some more money.".

412
00:31:54.690 --> 00:32:01.080
Money is never the ultimate solution to our lack of joy in our lives.

413
00:32:01.410 --> 00:32:05.880
Money is never the solution to a marriage being broken.

414
00:32:05.880 --> 00:32:07.680
It may contribute to it, maybe help,

415
00:32:07.680 --> 00:32:09.510
but it is never the ultimate solution.

416
00:32:09.750 --> 00:32:14.520
Money is never the thing that fixes our self-esteem problem.

417
00:32:14.610 --> 00:32:16.230
It never is.

418
00:32:17.070 --> 00:32:22.970
Money is never the thing that makes us feel great about where our life is going.

419
00:32:23.540 --> 00:32:26.030
Money is never the thing that gives me peace

420
00:32:26.030 --> 00:32:30.170
because there's all kinds of very rich people just recently,

421
00:32:30.170 --> 00:32:33.230
very rich people, Anthony Bourdain, Kate Spade, on and on,

422
00:32:33.230 --> 00:32:38.300
who had a lot of mammon and they didn't have peace

423
00:32:38.300 --> 00:32:39.530
and they ended their life.

424
00:32:41.520 --> 00:32:46.100
There is a spirit that rests on money.

425
00:32:46.100 --> 00:32:49.370
It's not, as Adam Smith, one of the founders of capitalism, says:

426
00:32:53.180 --> 00:32:55.040
It is not a neutral medium of exchange.

427
00:32:56.120 --> 00:32:58.010
This table is a neutral thing.

428
00:32:58.390 --> 00:33:00.920
It's never gonna make me do something, man,

429
00:33:00.920 --> 00:33:04.490
but money will make me want to compromise my values

430
00:33:04.490 --> 00:33:06.380
or think about compromising my values.

431
00:33:06.440 --> 00:33:10.160
Why is that? It's because there's a spirit of mammon on money.

432
00:33:10.850 --> 00:33:13.130
It's personal. It's manipulative.

433
00:33:13.340 --> 00:33:17.360
Mammon is used or it uses us.

434
00:33:18.400 --> 00:33:22.240
We either use mammon or it uses us.

435
00:33:23.320 --> 00:33:25.870
You probably heard of that phrase: money is the root of all evil.

436
00:33:26.710 --> 00:33:28.630
It's not money is not the root of all evil.

437
00:33:30.010 --> 00:33:33.820
The love of money is the root of all sorts of evil is what the Bible says.

438
00:33:33.820 --> 00:33:34.830
Here's exactly what it says:

439
00:33:46.920 --> 00:33:50.680
So for many people, the love of it, the wanting of it,

440
00:33:50.680 --> 00:33:52.750
causes us to pierce ourselves with sorrows.

441
00:33:53.650 --> 00:33:54.130
Why?

442
00:33:54.550 --> 00:33:56.710
Because we talked, we're out of the blessed zone.

443
00:33:57.120 --> 00:33:59.320
When we're not operating in the blessed zone,

444
00:33:59.320 --> 00:34:01.600
we can't experience all of God.

445
00:34:02.170 --> 00:34:06.100
The tithe, as we've talked, returning to God 10 percent of what it is.

446
00:34:06.100 --> 00:34:07.570
Which is really again, amazing.

447
00:34:08.020 --> 00:34:11.530
No investor continues to give any entity money

448
00:34:11.530 --> 00:34:14.650
and only once a one time 10 percent payment on it.

449
00:34:14.770 --> 00:34:18.130
Nobody ever. No investor would ever, ever, ever, ever do that.

450
00:34:18.160 --> 00:34:20.530
But God says, I'm giving you the ability to have this money.

451
00:34:20.570 --> 00:34:24.220
I'm giving this money and I want you to return it to me.

452
00:34:24.550 --> 00:34:25.830
Return the first 10 to me.

453
00:34:25.840 --> 00:34:26.920
It's not even give it to me.

454
00:34:27.160 --> 00:34:28.420
Return it to me. Why?

455
00:34:28.450 --> 00:34:30.160
Because God says that thing right there,

456
00:34:30.160 --> 00:34:31.540
that's like mine.

457
00:34:32.280 --> 00:34:34.630
And I'm giving it to you and I want you to return it.

458
00:34:34.660 --> 00:34:38.230
And when we don't return that, those of us who are Christians,

459
00:34:38.620 --> 00:34:41.190
those of us who say we possess the Holy Spirit,

460
00:34:41.190 --> 00:34:46.290
when we don't do that what we're saying is money actually owns me

461
00:34:46.290 --> 00:34:48.010
because money is using me.

462
00:34:48.340 --> 00:34:52.320
And we end up piercing ourselves with all sorts of woes.

463
00:34:53.230 --> 00:35:00.070
You know something doesn't own you when you can release it.

464
00:35:00.070 --> 00:35:03.330
When you can't release something, it owns you.

465
00:35:03.340 --> 00:35:06.190
When you can't break up with your boyfriend or girlfriend,

466
00:35:06.670 --> 00:35:09.300
it's dysfunctional maybe.

467
00:35:09.300 --> 00:35:09.980
They own you.

468
00:35:10.030 --> 00:35:14.550
But when you can release something, it gives you freedom.

469
00:35:15.930 --> 00:35:17.660
I don't know why God says 10 percent,

470
00:35:17.660 --> 00:35:20.460
He just says it over and over and over and over again all over the Bible.

471
00:35:20.460 --> 00:35:21.500
I spent a whole week talking about that.

472
00:35:21.540 --> 00:35:23.020
I don't know why. I know why.

473
00:35:23.040 --> 00:35:24.220
What's the magical thing on 10 precent?

474
00:35:24.240 --> 00:35:24.600
I don't know why.

475
00:35:25.110 --> 00:35:31.110
Maybe it's just that God knows that we need the regular test,

476
00:35:31.110 --> 00:35:34.700
the regular habit of, "Okay, I just got this money.

477
00:35:34.700 --> 00:35:35.770
Oh, but it doesn't own me.

478
00:35:35.790 --> 00:35:40.410
And just to prove it to myself and the mammon, I'm going to release it."

479
00:35:40.590 --> 00:35:41.900
We either use mammon or it uses us.

480
00:35:41.910 --> 00:35:43.370
We can use mammon by blessing people.

481
00:35:43.380 --> 00:35:45.330
You can use mammon by building into our future.

482
00:35:45.540 --> 00:35:48.090
We can use mammon by pushing God's agenda forward.

483
00:35:48.090 --> 00:35:52.050
We can use mammon by doing things for a rainy day.

484
00:35:52.050 --> 00:35:56.730
We can use mammon, but to be clear, if we're not using it

485
00:35:56.730 --> 00:35:59.340
and the way we use it is releasing it, it's using us.

486
00:36:00.630 --> 00:36:04.650
Mammon is on all kinds of things, even on Halloween candy.

487
00:36:04.650 --> 00:36:07.590
I don't know if you saw this recent video that went viral.

488
00:36:07.650 --> 00:36:09.300
It appropriately went viral.

489
00:36:09.300 --> 00:36:11.930
And if you haven't seen it or if you have seen it,

490
00:36:11.930 --> 00:36:13.050
you're going to enjoy seeing it again.

491
00:36:13.290 --> 00:36:19.650
Watch how one little guy stands against the spirit of mammon that is selfish.

492
00:36:30.410 --> 00:36:30.870
- Oh, no, there ain't no more candy. - Oh, that is really nice, Jackson.

493
00:36:36.240 --> 00:36:39.510
- Here's some more.

494
00:36:39.510 --> 00:36:41.750
There you go.

495
00:36:41.750 --> 00:36:45.010
- For the next kids.

496
00:36:48.620 --> 00:36:52.630
- That is a kid who's got a good heart right there.

497
00:36:52.630 --> 00:36:55.780
We said all along money is a matter of the heart.

498
00:36:55.780 --> 00:36:57.450
Giving is a matter of the heart.

499
00:36:57.480 --> 00:37:00.720
And whenever we give, when we tithe,

500
00:37:00.720 --> 00:37:04.620
it's going to be some combination of our faith and our math.

501
00:37:04.980 --> 00:37:06.060
Our faith and our math.

502
00:37:06.060 --> 00:37:08.250
Not everyone can go to 10 percent right away

503
00:37:08.250 --> 00:37:10.260
because of a whole bunch of things.

504
00:37:10.500 --> 00:37:13.590
But all of us have to be moving that way

505
00:37:13.590 --> 00:37:15.330
if we want to get into the zone.

506
00:37:15.330 --> 00:37:17.130
If we want to get into the blessed life,

507
00:37:17.130 --> 00:37:19.470
we have to return to God what is His.

508
00:37:19.500 --> 00:37:22.150
There's a measure of faith and math.

509
00:37:22.230 --> 00:37:24.210
There's a progression that we have to go to.

510
00:37:24.480 --> 00:37:28.000
And the only ones of us who will ever want to do that

511
00:37:28.000 --> 00:37:29.850
are those of us who want to use mammon.

512
00:37:30.090 --> 00:37:32.220
And the only ones who are closed to that

513
00:37:32.220 --> 00:37:34.380
are the ones who are being used by madmen.

514
00:37:34.410 --> 00:37:36.720
Because mammon will always tell us you can't do it.

515
00:37:37.000 --> 00:37:39.430
Mammon will always tell us God won't be faithful.

516
00:37:39.690 --> 00:37:42.440
Mammon will always tell us this is crazy talk.

517
00:37:44.070 --> 00:37:44.880
It always does.

518
00:37:45.190 --> 00:37:48.180
This mammon and he's very consistent with all of us

519
00:37:48.180 --> 00:37:52.410
because mammon is not a neutral medium of exchange.

520
00:37:53.020 --> 00:37:57.150
It's a personal, spiritual, lying entity

521
00:37:57.150 --> 00:38:01.270
that wants to keep you and I from experiencing our God.

522
00:38:01.830 --> 00:38:02.190
Jesus says:.

523
00:38:10.590 --> 00:38:11.760
Jesus says we're all going to fail,

524
00:38:11.760 --> 00:38:13.170
we're all going to die at some point.

525
00:38:13.170 --> 00:38:14.940
And when you die, there's gonna be people

526
00:38:14.940 --> 00:38:16.770
based on what you did with Mammon,

527
00:38:16.770 --> 00:38:18.870
you're going to make friends in the next life.

528
00:38:19.140 --> 00:38:21.510
People you have brought to Christ,

529
00:38:21.510 --> 00:38:23.970
who you have funded for a missionary,

530
00:38:23.970 --> 00:38:26.340
people who you have fed and extended their life.

531
00:38:26.370 --> 00:38:27.510
They're going to welcome you.

532
00:38:27.540 --> 00:38:30.300
You can use your mammon or it uses you.

533
00:38:30.330 --> 00:38:33.450
You can use your mammon for internal purposes

534
00:38:33.450 --> 00:38:36.840
to actually buy yourself a welcoming committee,

535
00:38:36.840 --> 00:38:38.310
to buy yourself friends.

536
00:38:38.940 --> 00:38:43.320
Third thing he says is that small, small beginnings

537
00:38:43.320 --> 00:38:45.600
turn into larger outcomes.

538
00:38:46.260 --> 00:38:50.550
Small beginnings turn into larger outcomes.

539
00:38:50.970 --> 00:38:51.540
He says:.

540
00:39:06.930 --> 00:39:10.830
God looks down and before He makes a further investment in your life,

541
00:39:10.830 --> 00:39:12.390
because that's what God does, He makes investments.

542
00:39:12.390 --> 00:39:14.820
Before God makes investments in our lives,

543
00:39:14.820 --> 00:39:19.650
He looks to see the return of the last investment we make.

544
00:39:19.650 --> 00:39:24.060
And if the return on the last investment wasn't up to where He wants it,

545
00:39:24.060 --> 00:39:26.220
He's not apt to make investment.

546
00:39:26.310 --> 00:39:30.510
Investment language, Jesus uses again and again and again

547
00:39:30.510 --> 00:39:32.310
and again and again and again. Use it again.

548
00:39:32.550 --> 00:39:35.690
We understand that kind of language because we realize,

549
00:39:35.690 --> 00:39:39.750
"Oh, I just -- that company, they're not having any return.

550
00:39:39.780 --> 00:39:45.150
But I just like the logo and colors, so I'm just gonna keep putting.".

551
00:39:45.150 --> 00:39:46.200
No, it doesn't work that way.

552
00:39:46.200 --> 00:39:46.380
Right?

553
00:39:46.400 --> 00:39:47.340
You want to see return.

554
00:39:47.520 --> 00:39:48.870
And Jesus says this is how God is.

555
00:39:49.260 --> 00:39:51.300
And it starts really, really small.

556
00:39:51.510 --> 00:39:53.640
You don't make a big massive investment in something

557
00:39:53.640 --> 00:39:56.460
that hasn't exhibited level of performance.

558
00:39:56.880 --> 00:39:58.260
No matter how much money I've made,

559
00:39:58.260 --> 00:40:00.770
as long as I've been tithing,

560
00:40:00.770 --> 00:40:02.200
it's been very, very difficult tithe.

561
00:40:02.480 --> 00:40:05.620
It was incredibly difficult to tithe on minimum wage at $3.35

562
00:40:05.620 --> 00:40:06.080
an hour.

563
00:40:06.590 --> 00:40:12.870
Incredibly, incredibly difficult because that it's unbelieve--

564
00:40:12.920 --> 00:40:16.310
And I will tell you, making way, way, way, way, way,

565
00:40:16.310 --> 00:40:19.490
way more than I am, I have plenty of money, thank you very much.

566
00:40:19.490 --> 00:40:20.630
Crossroads is very generous with me.

567
00:40:20.900 --> 00:40:25.190
Plenty of money and I have different revenue streams that come to me.

568
00:40:25.220 --> 00:40:30.470
I would just tell you, it's just as difficult when you have more money

569
00:40:30.470 --> 00:40:32.480
because the numbers are larger.

570
00:40:32.570 --> 00:40:34.780
You're like, "Oh, my gosh, that amount of money.

571
00:40:34.890 --> 00:40:36.020
Oh, my goodness."

572
00:40:36.920 --> 00:40:41.210
It is never easy for anybody to be a blessing to anybody.

573
00:40:41.210 --> 00:40:42.860
It is never easy.

574
00:40:42.860 --> 00:40:47.840
It's never easy to give and return to God 10 percent.

575
00:40:47.870 --> 00:40:49.100
It isn't.

576
00:40:50.330 --> 00:40:53.840
And that's why whatever financial patterns you have,

577
00:40:53.840 --> 00:40:58.880
when you have less, unless the Spirit of God intercedes,

578
00:40:58.880 --> 00:41:02.670
whatever patterns you have, when you have less,

579
00:41:02.670 --> 00:41:05.630
mammon will have you have those patterns when you have more.

580
00:41:06.870 --> 00:41:11.100
People very rarely change, even though God is a God of change.

581
00:41:11.340 --> 00:41:15.720
So when you spend to zero when you have minimum wage,

582
00:41:15.720 --> 00:41:18.770
when you make $250,000 a year

583
00:41:18.770 --> 00:41:22.140
and financial manager tell you this, you still spend to zero.

584
00:41:23.170 --> 00:41:24.070
"Where did the money go?"

585
00:41:24.660 --> 00:41:27.960
When you save when you're a minimum wage

586
00:41:27.960 --> 00:41:30.040
and when you're getting more, you save.

587
00:41:30.300 --> 00:41:34.560
When you tithe when you're here, you tithe when you're over here.

588
00:41:35.130 --> 00:41:37.080
And God is the one who changes,

589
00:41:37.080 --> 00:41:42.110
but mammon is always telling us we're in a unique situation

590
00:41:42.110 --> 00:41:44.170
and this just has to be the way it is for this season.

591
00:41:44.170 --> 00:41:47.120
When reality that season always goes on

592
00:41:47.120 --> 00:41:51.770
because mammon always deludes us and has one goal,

593
00:41:51.770 --> 00:41:53.330
and that is to keep us away from God.

594
00:41:53.360 --> 00:41:55.310
Because mammon wants all the attention.

595
00:41:55.990 --> 00:42:00.980
Mammon wants to be the weightiest thing that our life revolves around,

596
00:42:00.980 --> 00:42:05.620
instead of God being the weighty thing that our life revolves around.

597
00:42:08.220 --> 00:42:09.050
I had to say this earlier.

598
00:42:09.170 --> 00:42:12.260
I've tried to say this every weekend and I forgot, sorry.

599
00:42:12.440 --> 00:42:14.240
We're not in the middle of a campaign, by the way.

600
00:42:15.470 --> 00:42:19.400
We have no campaign coming up,

601
00:42:19.400 --> 00:42:21.370
not the next two weeks or whatever, however long the series.

602
00:42:21.560 --> 00:42:23.810
There's not gonna be a card you have to fill out

603
00:42:23.810 --> 00:42:25.210
and like come forward and drop it.

604
00:42:25.480 --> 00:42:26.570
None of that's happening at all.

605
00:42:27.050 --> 00:42:28.430
We've done those things before.

606
00:42:28.430 --> 00:42:29.740
We've done campaigns before.

607
00:42:29.750 --> 00:42:32.540
God is -- just to give you a peek behind the curtain here.

608
00:42:32.870 --> 00:42:34.730
God has really blessed our church.

609
00:42:34.760 --> 00:42:36.900
Can we just give God a hand, thank Him for blessing us?

610
00:42:36.900 --> 00:42:37.370
[applause]

611
00:42:37.370 --> 00:42:39.950
God has blessed our church in a huge way.

612
00:42:40.190 --> 00:42:43.700
He's given us opportunities and people and experiences

613
00:42:43.700 --> 00:42:46.070
and recently He's just blessed us.

614
00:42:46.250 --> 00:42:46.700
Amazing.

615
00:42:46.730 --> 00:42:49.120
One of the ways He's blessed us is through campaigns.

616
00:42:49.130 --> 00:42:51.980
Campaigns is how we've been able

617
00:42:51.980 --> 00:42:55.130
to have building structures in different states

618
00:42:55.130 --> 00:42:57.530
and have CityLink to help people who are in poverty

619
00:42:57.530 --> 00:42:59.750
and feed people every day

620
00:42:59.750 --> 00:43:02.960
and have structures for people were hurting in Nicaragua

621
00:43:02.960 --> 00:43:03.500
and Bolivia.

622
00:43:03.530 --> 00:43:07.310
All these things have come out of out of campaigns.

623
00:43:07.340 --> 00:43:08.870
God has blessed us with them.

624
00:43:09.350 --> 00:43:13.550
And while He's blessed us, I will just tell you,

625
00:43:13.550 --> 00:43:16.940
part of why campaigns have gone really well with us

626
00:43:16.940 --> 00:43:18.650
is that we've outsmarted mammon.

627
00:43:20.250 --> 00:43:22.470
We understand how mammon makes us think

628
00:43:22.470 --> 00:43:23.820
and we come against those things.

629
00:43:24.420 --> 00:43:28.620
And that's why we're not doing any of the campaign playbook

630
00:43:28.620 --> 00:43:30.000
during this series, because it's not a campaign.

631
00:43:30.750 --> 00:43:32.900
We understand how mammon works.

632
00:43:32.900 --> 00:43:35.250
Mammon says, "Well, you don't know what they're doing with that money.

633
00:43:36.600 --> 00:43:40.050
Who knows how many, they're mismanaging their IT accounts

634
00:43:40.050 --> 00:43:41.220
or how much Brian Tome gets."

635
00:43:42.090 --> 00:43:44.960
So we go a campaign, here's the defined projects over here.

636
00:43:45.060 --> 00:43:47.280
"Oh, oh, I understand these are the things.

637
00:43:47.280 --> 00:43:48.450
I can forget about that."

638
00:43:48.450 --> 00:43:52.920
We're over here and we're like, "Well, I don't -- I can't --

639
00:43:52.920 --> 00:43:54.250
I can't really afford to do what I do.

640
00:43:54.310 --> 00:43:57.450
I'm not all excited about the normal ministry of Crossroads,

641
00:43:57.450 --> 00:44:01.170
but oh, oh, oh, oh, feeding some people over here and doing--

642
00:44:01.170 --> 00:44:02.490
oh, I'm really excited about that.

643
00:44:02.700 --> 00:44:04.680
Over here one of things is, well, I don't know.

644
00:44:04.740 --> 00:44:06.430
Brian Town, what does he do?

645
00:44:06.470 --> 00:44:06.900
Do does he give?"

646
00:44:06.900 --> 00:44:08.910
Whenever I've done campaigns, I've told you what I give.

647
00:44:09.180 --> 00:44:10.740
And I'm not telling you this time

648
00:44:10.740 --> 00:44:13.560
because that's a tool I've used to try to loosen you up

649
00:44:13.560 --> 00:44:16.560
to help you understand, I give and I'm walking my talk.

650
00:44:16.710 --> 00:44:18.750
But I'm not telling you how much this time

651
00:44:18.750 --> 00:44:20.250
because it's not about me this time.

652
00:44:21.000 --> 00:44:22.170
It's not about Crossroads.

653
00:44:22.790 --> 00:44:23.850
It's not about campaign.

654
00:44:24.600 --> 00:44:25.200
It's about you.

655
00:44:25.560 --> 00:44:27.060
Isn't it great when someone tells you it's about you?

656
00:44:28.350 --> 00:44:31.400
It's about you and your walk with God.

657
00:44:31.470 --> 00:44:34.890
It's about you in your spiritual maturity.

658
00:44:35.240 --> 00:44:39.570
It's about you and how much you want the blessings of God.

659
00:44:39.600 --> 00:44:45.910
It's about you and your choice to have yourself marked

660
00:44:45.910 --> 00:44:49.790
as somebody who has a spirital to weightiness about them

661
00:44:49.790 --> 00:44:53.760
and honors God and honors His ways.

662
00:44:53.760 --> 00:44:57.120
And this idea of little things lead to big things,

663
00:44:57.120 --> 00:45:00.360
we've gotten to where we are not just because the blessing of God.

664
00:45:00.360 --> 00:45:02.610
We've gotten to where we are

665
00:45:02.610 --> 00:45:04.710
because of managing the little things that we have

666
00:45:04.710 --> 00:45:07.770
and God has seen fit to keep throwing things our way.

667
00:45:08.340 --> 00:45:12.390
In the early days of Crossroads, and I do mean literal days,

668
00:45:12.390 --> 00:45:14.720
like the literal days that Crossroads had started.

669
00:45:14.910 --> 00:45:18.780
I want to say maybe a month or two in in 1996.

670
00:45:19.680 --> 00:45:22.260
We knew of a ministry here in Cincinnati

671
00:45:22.260 --> 00:45:25.920
where I'm preaching right now, that did a great job with people in poverty.

672
00:45:25.920 --> 00:45:28.080
And we're like, we need to just make a commitment to this place.

673
00:45:28.110 --> 00:45:29.190
We we a commitment.

674
00:45:29.220 --> 00:45:31.560
And we found out that we were actually

675
00:45:31.560 --> 00:45:34.860
the largest church giver of this ministry.

676
00:45:34.860 --> 00:45:37.800
And our church at that point was, I don't know,

677
00:45:37.800 --> 00:45:40.350
300 people on a weekend or something like that.

678
00:45:40.350 --> 00:45:41.820
And it was really a stretch.

679
00:45:42.180 --> 00:45:43.440
It was a huge stretch for us.

680
00:45:43.470 --> 00:45:45.180
Like that, we're going to commit this.

681
00:45:45.180 --> 00:45:47.610
I think we had three staff members at the time or something that.

682
00:45:47.790 --> 00:45:50.220
So making a commitment like that, it was a huge, huge thing.

683
00:45:51.980 --> 00:45:54.500
Brian Wells, one of our early people at Crossroads,

684
00:45:54.500 --> 00:45:58.010
actually at Crossroads before me, still on our board.

685
00:45:58.430 --> 00:46:01.840
He handed out to our staff of three $100,000 Bars.

686
00:46:01.840 --> 00:46:03.380
Remember those bars? They were amazing.

687
00:46:03.530 --> 00:46:05.300
Do they still make $100,000 Bars?

688
00:46:06.530 --> 00:46:09.920
He handed out those bars and everyone was afraid to eat that bar.

689
00:46:10.760 --> 00:46:12.080
The reason why we didn't want to eat the bar

690
00:46:12.080 --> 00:46:13.220
is we don't want to ruin it

691
00:46:13.220 --> 00:46:15.970
because he bought that bar the day after somebody --

692
00:46:16.250 --> 00:46:19.400
The day after we made the decision as a board

693
00:46:19.400 --> 00:46:21.380
to bless this ministry with money

694
00:46:21.380 --> 00:46:23.010
we weren't sure how we're going to get

695
00:46:23.010 --> 00:46:25.850
and we got an anonymous $100,000 check.

696
00:46:26.850 --> 00:46:30.960
And we remembered the goodness of God.

697
00:46:31.010 --> 00:46:34.820
And I know decisions like way back when

698
00:46:34.820 --> 00:46:36.290
prepared us for this.

699
00:46:36.560 --> 00:46:38.330
And this prepared us for this.

700
00:46:38.380 --> 00:46:43.090
And this prepared, because God's looking to see can we handle more?

701
00:46:43.790 --> 00:46:46.720
He's looking to see what we want our life to revolve around.

702
00:46:46.750 --> 00:46:50.050
He's looking to see who we really love.

703
00:46:50.080 --> 00:46:55.000
See, how we use mammon indicates how much God uses us.

704
00:46:55.180 --> 00:46:56.750
I don't know if you ever heard anybody say that clearly,

705
00:46:56.750 --> 00:46:57.610
but Jesus says this.

706
00:46:57.820 --> 00:47:03.160
How you use mammon will indicate how much God uses you.

707
00:47:03.640 --> 00:47:05.470
You can have the American dream

708
00:47:05.470 --> 00:47:08.530
and you can you can beat your neighbor with having more toys when you die

709
00:47:08.530 --> 00:47:09.190
and all that stuff.

710
00:47:09.190 --> 00:47:12.220
And that means nothing about how much God is using you,

711
00:47:12.220 --> 00:47:14.710
how welcoming God is going to be in the next life.

712
00:47:14.800 --> 00:47:19.150
That means nothing related to sensing the blessings of God.

713
00:47:19.180 --> 00:47:23.050
People can have plenty of toys and plenty of digits

714
00:47:23.050 --> 00:47:24.070
and not the blessings of God.

715
00:47:24.070 --> 00:47:38.270
Jesus says this:se, whose?

716
00:47:38.380 --> 00:47:39.420
In other words, what's another man's?

717
00:47:39.430 --> 00:47:45.040
Another man's is what God's is, which is when he reserves a tenth.

718
00:47:46.710 --> 00:47:51.060
Now, the nation of Israel was tying into all of these truths.

719
00:47:51.420 --> 00:47:56.340
And I'm going to go through one of the more
weighty passages in the Bible in like 10 minutes.

720
00:47:56.370 --> 00:47:57.750
Do you believe I can? Do you believe?

721
00:47:57.780 --> 00:47:58.380
Do you believe?

722
00:47:58.740 --> 00:47:59.790
All right. Here we go.

723
00:48:00.510 --> 00:48:02.050
Exodus 32,.

724
00:48:02.250 --> 00:48:05.220
Exodus 32, we have the nation of Israel

725
00:48:05.220 --> 00:48:09.330
who comes out of bondage to Egypt.

726
00:48:09.750 --> 00:48:11.970
They come into a fresh place, the new place.

727
00:48:12.210 --> 00:48:13.440
And things are stressful.

728
00:48:13.440 --> 00:48:15.720
Sometimes when you have freedom, things are stressful.

729
00:48:15.990 --> 00:48:18.660
They had somebody feeding them back here in bondage.

730
00:48:18.900 --> 00:48:20.370
Now they've got to fend for themselves.

731
00:48:20.370 --> 00:48:23.250
They've got to trust for God to drop manna
out of the sky and all kinds of stuff.

732
00:48:23.250 --> 00:48:26.190
There's actually a lot of tension when you're in freedom.

733
00:48:26.380 --> 00:48:27.120
There really is.

734
00:48:27.330 --> 00:48:29.870
It's not like God sets us free and, woo-hoo, it's easy.

735
00:48:30.150 --> 00:48:33.330
No, there's tension because spiritual growth

736
00:48:33.330 --> 00:48:35.550
always has a level of tension to it,

737
00:48:35.550 --> 00:48:38.790
just like physical growth and mental growth

738
00:48:38.790 --> 00:48:40.740
has a level of of tension to it.

739
00:48:41.190 --> 00:48:45.400
So God brings Moses up on the mountain where Moses

740
00:48:45.400 --> 00:48:47.730
is going to get the tablets and the law and all these things.

741
00:48:47.730 --> 00:48:48.420
And here's what happens.

742
00:49:06.490 --> 00:49:07.260
He's very funny.

743
00:49:08.460 --> 00:49:12.280
No matter, no matter how poor you think you are,

744
00:49:12.280 --> 00:49:13.410
someday someone's going to say,

745
00:49:13.410 --> 00:49:16.230
"You know, as far as this guy, Moses,

746
00:49:16.230 --> 00:49:17.440
this guy, whatever happened, I don't know."

747
00:49:17.760 --> 00:49:22.100
Some day people around Crossroads will go,

748
00:49:22.100 --> 00:49:24.720
"As for this guy, Brian Tome, whoever he was,

749
00:49:24.720 --> 00:49:26.850
whatever's become of him, let's move on to something else.".

750
00:49:27.840 --> 00:49:29.640
Same with you. I don't care if you started a business

751
00:49:29.640 --> 00:49:32.770
or don't care if you've got a family of gazillion

752
00:49:32.770 --> 00:49:34.740
or I don't care, I don't care what you've done.

753
00:49:35.160 --> 00:49:37.290
There's coming a day far sooner than you think,

754
00:49:37.290 --> 00:49:40.540
where you would be irrelevant and people are like, "Yeah, well, whatever."

755
00:49:40.740 --> 00:49:43.410
People are about the now, not of the past.

756
00:49:43.420 --> 00:49:45.060
This is the way it's happening with Moses.

757
00:49:45.300 --> 00:49:49.110
So he's got this sidekick, Aaron, who tries to appease the masses

758
00:49:49.110 --> 00:49:50.490
who are not liking this discomfort.

759
00:49:50.670 --> 00:49:51.690
So Aaron said to them:.

760
00:50:16.900 --> 00:50:17.770
Wow.

761
00:50:19.230 --> 00:50:24.330
These folks have seen the real God miraculously deliver them,

762
00:50:24.330 --> 00:50:26.910
the real God bring plagues on their enemies,

763
00:50:26.910 --> 00:50:31.020
the real God part the waters, the real God feed them.

764
00:50:32.910 --> 00:50:38.270
How short their memory is that they start feeling a little skittish

765
00:50:38.270 --> 00:50:41.690
and they create their own god, a golden calf.

766
00:50:42.920 --> 00:50:45.920
And they actually say it was this thing

767
00:50:45.920 --> 00:50:47.660
that brought me to where I am today.

768
00:50:47.870 --> 00:50:48.950
See, that's what mammon does.

769
00:50:49.800 --> 00:50:53.360
Mammon makes us forget about the true past.

770
00:50:53.600 --> 00:50:56.000
Mammon makes us forget about the real God.

771
00:50:56.240 --> 00:51:01.100
Mammon is always drawing us to itself, in this case, the gold, the gold calf.

772
00:51:01.100 --> 00:51:02.840
And here's how even more insidious this is.

773
00:51:04.010 --> 00:51:05.860
These people were just released from slavery.

774
00:51:06.020 --> 00:51:07.480
Do you know any slaves that have jewelry?

775
00:51:09.100 --> 00:51:12.950
You know any slaves that have Tiffany's and Saks Fifth Avenue

776
00:51:12.950 --> 00:51:13.880
and David Erman?

777
00:51:14.810 --> 00:51:16.050
Do you know anyone who does?

778
00:51:16.160 --> 00:51:16.600
No, you don't.

779
00:51:16.640 --> 00:51:22.190
How did these slaves have gold to be able to melt it down

780
00:51:22.190 --> 00:51:23.210
into a golden calf?

781
00:51:23.240 --> 00:51:25.700
They have it because God bless them.

782
00:51:26.920 --> 00:51:31.270
He blessed them where they were able to plunder the Egyptians

783
00:51:31.270 --> 00:51:36.880
and all of their jewelry and fine minerals before they left.

784
00:51:36.880 --> 00:51:39.300
They actually went up to them and just ask them for it

785
00:51:39.300 --> 00:51:39.730
and they said, here you go.

786
00:51:39.730 --> 00:51:41.770
It was like a haze came over the Egyptians.

787
00:51:42.010 --> 00:51:42.610
Here you go.

788
00:51:42.850 --> 00:51:47.290
So the very thing that God has blessed them with

789
00:51:47.290 --> 00:51:49.750
is now the very thing that's pulling them away from God.

790
00:51:50.590 --> 00:51:52.030
Crazy thing for a lot of us.

791
00:51:52.510 --> 00:51:56.560
The very thing God blesses you with, a living, a livelihood, a whatever.

792
00:51:57.160 --> 00:51:58.970
If we are not careful.

793
00:51:58.970 --> 00:52:00.370
we will use that thing

794
00:52:00.370 --> 00:52:03.940
to distract us from God and pull us away from God.

795
00:52:04.570 --> 00:52:07.450
And this is what happens with a nation of Israel

796
00:52:07.450 --> 00:52:10.840
in this awful chapter of their history, which I'm telling you.

797
00:52:10.840 --> 00:52:13.900
I'm telling us today, because this is still happening today.

798
00:52:14.470 --> 00:52:17.480
With God's people this is still happening today.

799
00:52:17.500 --> 00:52:21.550
Taking the blessings of God and keeping them for ourselves.

800
00:52:21.550 --> 00:52:23.200
And not only keeping them for ourselves,

801
00:52:23.200 --> 00:52:27.040
but actually making a false God and worshipping it.

802
00:52:29.700 --> 00:52:32.370
So God and Moses are still up on the mountain.

803
00:52:32.700 --> 00:52:34.050
God finds out about this.

804
00:52:34.110 --> 00:52:35.260
He knows this is not good.

805
00:52:35.280 --> 00:52:37.620
God gets really, really angry.

806
00:52:37.650 --> 00:52:38.970
I'll pick this up at verse 9.

807
00:52:57.870 --> 00:52:58.950
One of the things I love about God

808
00:52:58.950 --> 00:53:00.860
and love about what the Bible says about God

809
00:53:00.860 --> 00:53:05.100
is it gives us a very wide range of emotions that God displays.

810
00:53:05.310 --> 00:53:07.770
You can't put God in an emotional box.

811
00:53:07.980 --> 00:53:10.010
He's incredibly joyful, his incredibly loving.

812
00:53:10.050 --> 00:53:11.070
We see this in Jesus.

813
00:53:11.400 --> 00:53:17.880
He's is incredibly generous, and He can be incredibly intense.

814
00:53:19.310 --> 00:53:21.540
And this is one of those times, he's like,

815
00:53:21.540 --> 00:53:23.910
"I can not believe what I'm seeing."

816
00:53:24.450 --> 00:53:28.230
And he just process out loud to Moses,

817
00:53:28.230 --> 00:53:30.290
"Moses, I'm about to start fresh with you.

818
00:53:30.290 --> 00:53:31.950
Wipe them all out. We'll start fresh with you.

819
00:53:31.950 --> 00:53:32.700
This is a stiff necked people."

820
00:53:33.670 --> 00:53:36.670
You do not want God, friends, to think that you are stiff necked.

821
00:53:36.670 --> 00:53:38.740
Stiff necked means, "I have my beliefs.

822
00:53:39.010 --> 00:53:40.670
I'm going here towards the way of mammon.

823
00:53:40.820 --> 00:53:42.340
And I just can't change.

824
00:53:42.730 --> 00:53:43.660
I can't move.

825
00:53:43.690 --> 00:53:46.240
I don't care. I don't care what the preacher guy says.

826
00:53:46.450 --> 00:53:47.890
I don't care what the Bible says.

827
00:53:48.100 --> 00:53:49.190
I know what --"

828
00:53:49.360 --> 00:53:53.020
When we're like this, we're asking God to literally break our neck.

829
00:53:54.150 --> 00:53:57.630
We're asking Him to take drastic measures

830
00:53:57.630 --> 00:54:01.740
because He loves you more than you love your own ways.

831
00:54:02.440 --> 00:54:07.140
And He's about to invoke some discipline on his people in this situation.

832
00:54:08.010 --> 00:54:10.980
So Moses comes down, I'm jumping forward to verse 19.

833
00:54:17.850 --> 00:54:18.930
Now Moses is hot.

834
00:54:19.020 --> 00:54:19.890
Now he's ticked off.

835
00:54:24.930 --> 00:54:27.030
He's got a little bit of anger management issue here.

836
00:54:27.450 --> 00:54:31.590
God has blessed him with writing on tablets and he smashes them.

837
00:54:43.830 --> 00:54:45.990
Now, what is going on here?

838
00:54:46.380 --> 00:54:48.240
I understand the anger management thing.

839
00:54:48.870 --> 00:54:50.220
I understand that one. But wait a minute, whoa.

840
00:54:50.440 --> 00:54:53.580
He takes it and he grounds it down.

841
00:54:54.630 --> 00:54:59.010
And then he stirs up and water like a gold Ovaltine he makes.

842
00:55:00.480 --> 00:55:01.450
And then everyone's got to drink it.

843
00:55:01.520 --> 00:55:02.280
What's going on there?

844
00:55:02.340 --> 00:55:03.960
I told you here that there's things that are

845
00:55:03.960 --> 00:55:06.270
in the Old Testament that that translate to today,

846
00:55:06.270 --> 00:55:07.230
that the trickle over.

847
00:55:07.500 --> 00:55:08.400
Here's what's happening.

848
00:55:10.690 --> 00:55:15.300
The plunder that God blessed them with

849
00:55:15.300 --> 00:55:18.210
that they are now serving mammon, they are serving it,

850
00:55:18.210 --> 00:55:22.860
and they're not serving God is ground down to water.

851
00:55:22.890 --> 00:55:24.490
And why would they be all this water?

852
00:55:24.630 --> 00:55:26.250
Why put it in water?

853
00:55:26.400 --> 00:55:28.500
I'm going to use this word intentionally

854
00:55:28.500 --> 00:55:31.080
because all the blessings of God, they're pissing them away.

855
00:55:34.670 --> 00:55:38.030
The blessings that God had given them and brought in,

856
00:55:38.030 --> 00:55:40.520
they now consume it and it's (sound effect).

857
00:55:40.520 --> 00:55:41.570
That's what we are, we're consumers.

858
00:55:41.950 --> 00:55:44.300
Gosh, we're not even citizens anymore in America.

859
00:55:44.310 --> 00:55:48.170
We're American consumers because mammon just expects us to consume.

860
00:55:49.460 --> 00:55:51.380
We're expected to keep the economy rolling

861
00:55:51.380 --> 00:55:53.150
and keep spending like everybody else does

862
00:55:53.150 --> 00:55:54.300
and keep riding it.

863
00:55:54.560 --> 00:55:56.810
We're defined by our consumption.

864
00:55:58.220 --> 00:55:59.510
And we pee it away.

865
00:56:00.190 --> 00:56:02.450
And many of us can never get ahead,

866
00:56:02.450 --> 00:56:06.020
not just because of mammon is using us

867
00:56:06.020 --> 00:56:08.690
and we're refusing to release mammon

868
00:56:08.690 --> 00:56:11.690
to go back to the God who gave it to us.

869
00:56:11.930 --> 00:56:14.480
But we just can't control, my kids say this.

870
00:56:14.510 --> 00:56:18.440
They say, "Dad, I don't know that if it's God blesses me

871
00:56:18.440 --> 00:56:20.660
with more because I tithe 10 percent

872
00:56:20.660 --> 00:56:24.810
or if I'm just more cognizant of what to do with the 90 percent.

873
00:56:24.840 --> 00:56:27.350
Maybe I'm a better manager of the 90 percent."

874
00:56:29.160 --> 00:56:32.560
You either get ahold of mammon or mammon gets a hold of you.

875
00:56:32.560 --> 00:56:35.110
And here God gives us an example of what happens

876
00:56:35.110 --> 00:56:37.130
and what many of us are experiencing

877
00:56:37.670 --> 00:56:40.110
when we take the blessings of God

878
00:56:40.110 --> 00:56:44.500
and we don't use them the way God has told us to use them.

879
00:56:48.050 --> 00:56:50.030
I'll jump ahead down to verse 19,

880
00:56:50.030 --> 00:56:52.010
there's a day of reckoning I don't have time to get into.

881
00:56:52.010 --> 00:56:52.910
It's pretty intense.

882
00:56:53.390 --> 00:56:57.020
And the tribe of the Levites are part of this day of reckoning

883
00:56:57.020 --> 00:56:57.920
with the nation of Israel.

884
00:56:58.190 --> 00:57:01.400
And then God sees what happens with the Levites

885
00:57:01.400 --> 00:57:02.520
and how they've been different.

886
00:57:02.960 --> 00:57:03.680
And here's what says:.

887
00:57:15.950 --> 00:57:17.790
The Levites become the Old Testament priests.

888
00:57:17.840 --> 00:57:23.030
The Levites get to be the ones who are actually inside the temple,

889
00:57:23.030 --> 00:57:26.390
experiencing the presence of God in the Holy of Holies.

890
00:57:27.140 --> 00:57:31.220
They actually get to live off the tithes of the rest of the nation of Israel.

891
00:57:31.220 --> 00:57:33.750
They're bringing to the temple and they do this,

892
00:57:33.750 --> 00:57:35.900
they're able to do this because

893
00:57:35.900 --> 00:57:38.330
they're getting the blessing of God

894
00:57:38.330 --> 00:57:39.950
because they're coming against mammon.

895
00:57:40.580 --> 00:57:45.020
They're coming against anything that isn't God.

896
00:57:46.750 --> 00:57:49.420
I have to tell you, I know all of us in here,

897
00:57:49.420 --> 00:57:50.140
God has blessed you.

898
00:57:50.410 --> 00:57:54.010
There are things that God has brought your way and He is testing you

899
00:57:54.010 --> 00:58:01.000
and He's testing me to see what we will do with what He has given us

900
00:58:01.000 --> 00:58:05.530
and whether what He has given us becomes our golden calf.

901
00:58:05.530 --> 00:58:07.630
And by the way, our golden calf could be money.

902
00:58:07.660 --> 00:58:09.610
Our golden calf could also be our body.

903
00:58:09.610 --> 00:58:11.950
Our golden calf could also be our family.

904
00:58:11.950 --> 00:58:13.720
Our golden calf could also be our country.

905
00:58:13.930 --> 00:58:16.270
It is anything that we worship

906
00:58:16.270 --> 00:58:20.170
and we put the most weight to, instead of the one true God.

907
00:58:20.180 --> 00:58:24.640
And we know that it's God when we're able to return to Him.

908
00:58:26.490 --> 00:58:29.270
Your dad wants to bless you, I'm going to tell you that right now.

909
00:58:29.280 --> 00:58:30.360
He wants to bless you.

910
00:58:32.410 --> 00:58:35.380
And He needs to know that He can bless you more.

911
00:58:35.530 --> 00:58:39.920
This is the story that Jesus gives us

912
00:58:39.920 --> 00:58:42.290
and it's the story of the nation of Israel.

913
00:58:43.070 --> 00:58:45.080
And I want to just seal this in our minds for a moment.

914
00:58:45.440 --> 00:58:46.940
Let's just sit for a moment.

915
00:58:46.970 --> 00:58:49.600
I've said some heavy stuff today, have I not, heavy?

916
00:58:49.630 --> 00:58:50.960
Let's all just exhale right now.

917
00:58:53.510 --> 00:58:57.050
OK. Let's just close out our time just with a moment of silence.

918
00:58:57.070 --> 00:58:58.470
And just see if God says anything to us.

919
00:58:58.490 --> 00:59:02.120
Take your hands and just put him face up on your on your palm.

920
00:59:02.120 --> 00:59:03.950
It's a universal receive sign.

921
00:59:03.990 --> 00:59:07.720
God, would You seal something for us

922
00:59:07.720 --> 00:59:09.590
if there's something that has been said today

923
00:59:09.590 --> 00:59:12.020
You want to stick with us in our brain.

924
00:59:14.000 --> 00:59:15.890
Hear our thoughts as we try to hear Yours.

925
00:59:31.770 --> 00:59:35.970
- I hope that you get to experience The Blessed Life this week.

926
00:59:36.510 --> 00:59:39.210
And, you know, if you want prayer right now,

927
00:59:39.210 --> 00:59:43.050
we have staff and volunteers that would love to pray for you over chat.

928
00:59:43.410 --> 00:59:44.820
You can head to Crossroads.net,

929
00:59:44.850 --> 00:59:46.800
click on that chat box

930
00:59:46.800 --> 00:59:48.990
and give us your name and what you want prayer for.

931
00:59:49.260 --> 00:59:52.080
And we have someone that will pray for you right now.

932
00:59:52.590 --> 00:59:54.060
I hope you have an awesome week

933
00:59:54.060 --> 00:59:57.630
and we'll see you back next week for another week of The Blessed Life.
Process, journal or discuss the themes of this article - here's a few questions to get the ball rolling...

Welcome to the Post-Weekend Push with Brian Tome.

  1. The macro theme of the Bible is freedom. We see it all over the place, from a guy named Moses all the way to Jesus. On this Veteran’s Day week, when we celebrate the men and women who have fought for freedom, let’s begin with this question: what does “freedom” mean to you?

  2. Mammon is a spirit, and he is present when we trust in anything that is not God. Mammon wants to be possessed, wants to use us, and will lie to us. What lie about money does Mammon specifically speak to you? (Ex: You’ll never have enough; if you just made a little bit more you would feel secure; your money is all yours, etc.)

  3. In Exodus 32, we find the story of the Golden Calf. God rescued his people from Egypt, allowed them to plunder the Egyptians, and they turned his blessings into an idol. Can you relate to that story? What blessings are you tempted to elevate to the place only God should occupy?

  4. There are two ways to be stiff-necked: (1) When you don’t do what you know you are supposed to do or (2) When you do what you know you shouldn’t. Either way, God breaks stiff-necks. Don’t want to experience that? Identify where you are being stiff-necked and one way you can begin to move in the opposite direction.

  5. When there are difficult things that God has called us to do, there is oftentimes a blessing on the other side of it. What is the difficult thing God wants you to do? How can you get moving?

  6. Pray: After everyone shares the difficult thing God wants them to do, take time to pray for each person and scenario. Pray is the thing that elevates our lives beyond the scope of our own power.
