Crush Numbness and Live Powerfully

Our Netflix watch lists give us away—we are a culture that longs for the supernatural and mystical. We can’t seem to shake the idea that we were made for more than the rut of the nine to five, takeout dinner, and binging Black Mirror. Today we’re going to talk about the powerful, fully alive, supernatural life God made us for.

Process, journal or discuss the themes of this article - here's a few questions to get the ball rolling...

Welcome to the Chaser–a few questions after the weekend service to start conversations and push a little deeper. Go on. Dive in.

  1. We long for a fantastic and colorful world and our entertainment choices give us away. Want some proof? Let’s play Desert Island. Introduce yourself by sharing the five movies or books you’d want with you, if you were stuck on a desert island.

  2. Not only do we like a good story, we were made for one. Someone read Ecclesiastes 3:11 out loud. Then, discuss. Where have you felt a yearning for more? Could your Lord of the Rings (Or Braveheart. Or Bird Box.) fascination be you reaching for more of God?

  3. Next, have someone different read Ephesians 6:12 out loud. Do you believe there are forces working to prevent you from living a powerful life? What do you think of this passage? Do you believe it? Why or why not?

  4. Those forces keep us bored, deluded, and intimidated. Where in your life would those words describe how you’re feeling? At home? At work? With friends? And if those words don’t describe what you feel, where in your life are you feeling numb?

  5. Breaking out of numbness requires us to get out of our normal rhythms. As a group, brainstorm at least 20 ways to shake up the status quo. Here’s a couple from the message to get you started.

Take a vacation. Pray out loud. Call the girl. Be generous. Try fasting. Quit social media for a week…

Once you’re done, each person pick one thing they want to try this week. Then, we’re all gonna do one together—pray out loud.

Close your group by praying for each other, against numbness, and for the mustard seed steps you’ll take this week.

Challenge

In Matthew 17:17 Jesus says “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you?” Dang, Jesus… That’s some tough love. No matter where you are on the belief spectrum, ask yourself the following (little nicer) question and spend a few minutes journaling on it every morning this week.

“Did I live my life yesterday any different from someone without faith? Would someone watching my life be able to tell what I believe?”

Got it! Enjoy your discussion.
