  • 00:00:02
There's part of the Christmas story
  • 00:00:03
that you've probably never heard before,
  • 00:00:05
    but could change your life
  • 00:00:08
and bring you peace this Christmas.
  • 00:00:10
    Merry Christmas, by the way.
  • 00:00:11
    I'm Kyle. This is Crossroads.
  • 00:00:12
And whether you're watching this on Christmas Day,
  • 00:00:14
Christmas Eve, whenever, I have a question:
  • 00:00:18
do you know the story of Christmas?
  • 00:00:20
I mean, sure, you know Mary and Joseph and Jesus,
  • 00:00:22
of course, but what about everyone else?
  • 00:00:25
In fact, who is everybody else?
  • 00:00:28
    That's what today is.
  • 00:00:30
    We're uncovering three unknown characters
  • 00:00:32
of the Christmas story who are seemingly unrelated
  • 00:00:35
and discovering how they're not only deeply connected
  • 00:00:37
to each other, but also to Jesus.
  • 00:00:40
We'll see how Elizabeth was visited by an angel,
  • 00:00:43
how Gabriel was waiting hundreds of years
  • 00:00:45
to deliver an impossible message of hope,
  • 00:00:47
how Herod tried to stop it all from happening,
  • 00:00:50
and how the Christmas story changes everything
  • 00:00:53
for our lives today and can unlock the peace
  • 00:00:56
you and I need this Christmas.
  • 00:01:08
    - So there are some heavy hitters in the Bible.
  • 00:01:11
You've got big names that we know,
  • 00:01:13
you've got Mary, you've got Joseph and of course, Jesus.
  • 00:01:17
Now the name that you won't hear
  • 00:01:19
and you haven't heard is Elizabeth,
  • 00:01:21
but she is in fact a part of the Christmas story.
  • 00:01:24
See, Elizabeth was married to this guy named Zachariah,
  • 00:01:27
and they were both very old and unable to have children.
  • 00:01:31
    I mean, I'm talking old,
  • 00:01:32
at the age where all the eggs are hard boiled,
  • 00:01:35
    cracked, soldiers are not marching.
  • 00:01:37
And the Bible says that Elizabeth
  • 00:01:39
    is well past childbearing age,
  • 00:01:40
and that would have been scientifically impossible
  • 00:01:43
    for her to have killed.
  • 00:01:44
Absolutely. Like I just said, soldiers aren't moving.
  • 00:01:46
    She would have been woefully
  • 00:01:48
and humiliatingly bearen to this point,
  • 00:01:52
just not able to have a kid.
  • 00:01:53
Imagine what that would have felt like, to be barren,
  • 00:01:57
to know that that's the one thing you want
  • 00:02:00
    and you can't have it.
  • 00:02:01
And yet, Elizabeth was considered faithful.
  • 00:02:04
She was a woman who was righteous before God.
  • 00:02:07
Even though she didn't get the thing
  • 00:02:09
that she wanted most in life,
  • 00:02:11
she still regarded God as good.
  • 00:02:15
See, just like Mary, which happens way earlier
  • 00:02:18
in the Christmas story, Elizabeth and her husband
  • 00:02:21
were visited by an angel, the Angel Gabriel,
  • 00:02:26
and we're going to uncover what happens next
  • 00:02:28
    and how it changed everything.
  • 00:02:33
In the time of Herod, King of Judea,
  • 00:02:34
there was a priest named Zechariah,
  • 00:02:36
who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah.
  • 00:02:40
His wife, Elizabeth, was also a descendant of Aaron.
  • 00:02:44
Both of them were righteous in the sight of God,
  • 00:02:46
observing all of the Lord's commands
  • 00:02:48
    and decrees blamelessly.
  • 00:02:50
But they were childless because Elizabeth
  • 00:02:52
was not able to conceive and they both were very old.
  • 00:02:57
Then in Angel of the Lord appeared to Zachariah
  • 00:03:00
standing at the right side of the altar of incense.
  • 00:03:05
When Zachariah saw him, he was startled
  • 00:03:07
    and was gripped with fear.
  • 00:03:09
But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zachariah,
  • 00:03:12
    your prayer has been heard.
  • 00:03:16
Your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son,
  • 00:03:18
and you are to call him John."
  • 00:03:20
Zachariah asked the Angel, "How can I be sure of this?
  • 00:03:23
I am an old man and my wife is well along in years."
  • 00:03:27
The angel said to him, "I am Gabriel.
  • 00:03:30
I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent
  • 00:03:33
to speak to you and tell you this good news.
  • 00:03:36
And now you will be silent and not able to speak
  • 00:03:38
    until the day happens
  • 00:03:39
because you did not believe my words,
  • 00:03:42
which will come true at their appointed time."
  • 00:03:48
    - This scene is crazy.
  • 00:03:49
An angel shows up at intersects the story of Elizabeth
  • 00:03:53
when he talks to her husband, Zachariah.
  • 00:03:55
His name is Gabriel. He's an eternal being.
  • 00:03:59
If you look at the Bible, angels appear
  • 00:04:01
to have this existence completely different than us.
  • 00:04:03
The Bible has sections that talk about
  • 00:04:05
what happened before the beginning of the world,
  • 00:04:06
and the angels were there in that part of the story,
  • 00:04:09
and it has sections about after the end of the world
  • 00:04:11
    and the angels are there.
  • 00:04:13
    He's this cosmic scale being.
  • 00:04:15
By the way, I find this interesting.
  • 00:04:17
Angels in the Bible are often seen
  • 00:04:21
    and symbolized as the stars.
  • 00:04:22
There's this eternal weight and scale to them
  • 00:04:26
    that's just mind blowing.
  • 00:04:29
He shows up to deliver this message,
  • 00:04:31
a message that, by the way,
  • 00:04:32
he'd been waiting a long time to deliver, millennia.
  • 00:04:35
    Finally, the day arrives.
  • 00:04:36
This cosmic being shows up and his scale,
  • 00:04:39
his sheer size, it scares Zachariah so bad
  • 00:04:43
he just gets all freaked out.
  • 00:04:44
You know, angels aren't these little chubby babies
  • 00:04:46
with wings flying around, super cute.
  • 00:04:48
It's like this mind blowingly large navy seal shows up
  • 00:04:52
and then tells them this good news about the future
  • 00:04:55
that seems too good to be true.
  • 00:04:58
And in that moment, Zachariah does what we all do
  • 00:05:02
when we hear news that's too good to be true, he balks.
  • 00:05:07
    Luke 1:18 says:
  • 00:05:18
Him and Elizabeth, they were in a desert.
  • 00:05:21
It was dark in their life.
  • 00:05:22
They had been hoping for a baby for decades, decades.
  • 00:05:26
How many times had Elisabeth thought she was pregnant,
  • 00:05:30
    only to be let down?
  • 00:05:32
How many miscarriages had they been through
  • 00:05:34
    in their journey?
  • 00:05:36
And so with an angel of God standing in front of him,
  • 00:05:39
Zachariah basically says, "Man, I don't believe you.
  • 00:05:43
Maybe at one point in my life
  • 00:05:46
    I'd hope for something better.
  • 00:05:47
But the night has set in and if I hope for the morning,
  • 00:05:50
if I hope for dawn, if I hope to be able to see,
  • 00:05:53
I'm just going to be let down.
  • 00:05:54
And so it's going to be easier for me, Gabriel,
  • 00:05:56
if I just say, 'I don't buy it.'
  • 00:05:58
    It's safer for me here."
  • 00:06:01
Gabriel's response to Zachariah says this:
  • 00:06:18
I'm Gabriel. I stand with God.
  • 00:06:21
I'm giving you His words and I'm telling you
  • 00:06:25
they will come true at their time. They will.
  • 00:06:29
I just wonder about you in your life,
  • 00:06:31
is there a place where you've heard the Word of God,
  • 00:06:34
you've seen a promise in the Bible
  • 00:06:36
or a video like this or coming to church,
  • 00:06:39
at one point you believed for better,
  • 00:06:41
you believe that you can live life and not feel alone.
  • 00:06:44
You believe that that you could actually feel hope
  • 00:06:46
and peace and in not just feel so numb all the time.
  • 00:06:50
    You believe that.
  • 00:06:51
But now, after being let down so many times,
  • 00:06:55
    you're just not sure.
  • 00:06:57
Maybe it's just easier to just decide
  • 00:07:00
it's going to be dark, you know,
  • 00:07:03
just live out here alone by yourself.
  • 00:07:06
If you hope for the morning,
  • 00:07:07
you're going to be let down.
  • 00:07:08
    But here's the good news:
  • 00:07:11
the plans of God cannot be changed.
  • 00:07:15
    It's good news. Good news.
  • 00:07:20
Somebody who tried to stop God's plans,
  • 00:07:23
    a guy named King Herod.
  • 00:07:28
    - Now, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea
  • 00:07:30
in the days of Herod the King,
  • 00:07:33
behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem
  • 00:07:37
saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?
  • 00:07:41
But we saw His star when it rose
  • 00:07:43
and have come to worship Him."
  • 00:07:45
And when Herod the King heard this, he was troubled
  • 00:07:48
and all Jerusalem with him and assembling
  • 00:07:51
all the chief priests and scribes of the people
  • 00:07:54
he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
  • 00:08:00
Herod is this ruler who's overseeing the Jews
  • 00:08:04
under the authority of the Romans,
  • 00:08:07
and it's appropriate that this starts --
  • 00:08:10
By the way, he's an awful ruler, he's a bad ruler,
  • 00:08:12
he's got a major ego complex.
  • 00:08:14
    He hurts everybody around him.
  • 00:08:16
He has zero peace his life
  • 00:08:17
and he make sure everybody around him
  • 00:08:19
    doesn't have peace.
  • 00:08:21
And this whole story with that verse we read
  • 00:08:23
starts with the phrase "In the days of Herod."
  • 00:08:27
Everything is about him, and people know that day is him
  • 00:08:30
because he is an authority figure
  • 00:08:32
    that's hurting people around him.
  • 00:08:34
In reality, he's really not that powerful at all.
  • 00:08:39
His city, his wealth, his status,
  • 00:08:41
it all ended up like ancient ruins.
  • 00:08:44
And this is the way it is with us.
  • 00:08:46
We could actually do a little adaptation here
  • 00:08:48
and say in the days of Brian, in the days of Michelle,
  • 00:08:54
the days of Eduardo, in the days of Lakisha.
  • 00:08:59
    Someday, everything that's around us
  • 00:09:02
    will end up as rubble.
  • 00:09:04
And it behooves us to get on the page of God,
  • 00:09:07
    and Christmas reminds us
  • 00:09:08
that there is a page called God.
  • 00:09:10
    Actually, it's called King Jesus.
  • 00:09:12
Christmas is about the Kingdom of God being built,
  • 00:09:15
    and nothing can stop that.
  • 00:09:17
And when God promises anything, including a Deliverer
  • 00:09:20
or a Savior, He's going to deliver.
  • 00:09:28
    - Luke 1 says: In the sixth month
  • 00:09:30
of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the Angel Gabriel
  • 00:09:33
to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin
  • 00:09:35
pledge to be married to a man named Joseph,
  • 00:09:38
    a descendant of David.
  • 00:09:39
    The Virgin's name was Mary.
  • 00:09:41
The angel went to her and said,
  • 00:09:43
"Greetings, you who are highly favored,
  • 00:09:45
    the lord is with you."
  • 00:09:47
Mary was greatly troubled at his words
  • 00:09:48
and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.
  • 00:09:50
But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary,
  • 00:09:53
you have found favor with God.
  • 00:09:55
You will conceive and give birth to a son
  • 00:09:57
and you are to call him Jesus.
  • 00:09:59
He will be great and will be called
  • 00:10:01
the Son of the Most High.
  • 00:10:03
The Lord God will give Him
  • 00:10:04
the throne of His father David
  • 00:10:06
and He will reign over Jacob's descendants forever.
  • 00:10:09
    His kingdom will never end.
  • 00:10:12
"How will this be," Mary asked the angel.
  • 00:10:14
    "Since I'm a virgin?"
  • 00:10:16
The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come on you
  • 00:10:19
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
  • 00:10:21
So the holy one to be born will be called
  • 00:10:24
    the Son of God.
  • 00:10:25
    Even Elizabeth, your relative,
  • 00:10:27
is going to have a child in her old age,
  • 00:10:29
and she, who was said to be unable to conceive,
  • 00:10:32
    is in her sixth month.
  • 00:10:33
For no word from God will ever fail."
  • 00:10:40
So Gabriel shows up a second time
  • 00:10:41
    in the Christmas story,
  • 00:10:42
and he's got the same assignment as the first time
  • 00:10:44
when he showed up to Zachariah:
  • 00:10:46
deliver what seems like impossible news
  • 00:10:48
to somebody about a good thing God's going to do.
  • 00:10:51
Gabriel probably is hoping like, "Man,
  • 00:10:53
I hope this one goes better than the last one.
  • 00:10:55
I hope I don't have to make anybody
  • 00:10:56
not able to speak or something.
  • 00:10:57
I hope Mary just says cool."
  • 00:11:00
    But that's not what happens.
  • 00:11:01
She has the same response as Zachariah:
  • 00:11:03
"How will I know that this is true?
  • 00:11:06
How can I be sure? I'm too young.
  • 00:11:08
    This doesn't make any sense."
  • 00:11:10
Gabriel gives her the same response he gives Zachariah,
  • 00:11:14
but he sharpens it a little bit.
  • 00:11:16
He sharpens it, and he says,
  • 00:11:18
"No word from God will ever fail."
  • 00:11:22
It's the final line we ever get from Gabriel
  • 00:11:25
    in the entire Bible.
  • 00:11:26
It's this thesis statement, so to speak.
  • 00:11:28
    It's his message to humanity
  • 00:11:30
over thousands and thousands of years and today,
  • 00:11:33
    to you and to me.
  • 00:11:35
No word from God will ever fail. None.
  • 00:11:38
Now you might open your Bible app,
  • 00:11:42
and you might see a different translation
  • 00:11:43
because this verse is actually translated
  • 00:11:45
    a few different ways.
  • 00:11:46
    The English Standard Version says:
  • 00:11:51
If you pair the translations to get together,
  • 00:11:53
what you get is this understanding that
  • 00:11:56
if God has said it, it won't be impossible.
  • 00:12:00
    It will happen.
  • 00:12:02
I just wonder about your life.
  • 00:12:03
What in your life has God promised
  • 00:12:05
    that seems impossible to you?
  • 00:12:08
That star could happen for you right now.
  • 00:12:10
Just say, "Yes, God, I choose to believe.
  • 00:12:13
    I will believe.
  • 00:12:15
    Gabriel was God's messenger sent
  • 00:12:17
to deliver the good news at Christmas
  • 00:12:19
    that the impossible is possible.
  • 00:12:22
I'm telling you happened then, it can happen now.
  • 00:12:25
    It's possible for you.
  • 00:12:29
    - At that time, Mary got ready and hurried
  • 00:12:31
to a town in the hill country of Judea,
  • 00:12:33
    where she entered Zachariah's home
  • 00:12:35
    and greeted Elizabeth.
  • 00:12:37
    When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting,
  • 00:12:39
the baby leaped in her womb and Elizabeth
  • 00:12:42
was filled with the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:12:45
In a loud voice she exclaimed,
  • 00:12:47
    "Blessed are you among women
  • 00:12:48
and blessed is the child you will bear.
  • 00:12:52
But why am I so favored that
  • 00:12:54
the mother of my Lord should come to me?
  • 00:12:58
As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears,
  • 00:13:00
the baby in my womb leaped for joy.
  • 00:13:03
Blessed is she who has believed that
  • 00:13:05
the Lord would fulfill His promises to her."
  • 00:13:10
So the Angel Gabriel talks to Mary,
  • 00:13:12
and this is a part of the Christmas story that we know.
  • 00:13:15
And he tells her about her relative, Elizabeth.
  • 00:13:18
And Mary gets excited and she hurries to go see her.
  • 00:13:23
And then impossible things start happening.
  • 00:13:25
See, Elizabeth was in a time of seclusion
  • 00:13:28
    before she saw Mary.
  • 00:13:29
The Bible says that she became pregnant,
  • 00:13:31
and then she went to seclusion.
  • 00:13:33
    It doesn't really say why,
  • 00:13:34
it doesn't go into the details,
  • 00:13:35
but coming out of her seclusion,
  • 00:13:37
the very first visitor that she has is Mary.
  • 00:13:41
And when she hears the voice of Mary,
  • 00:13:43
the baby inside of her leaps.
  • 00:13:46
And Elizabeth, I mean, straight up loses it.
  • 00:13:50
    She gets super excited.
  • 00:13:51
I imagine her jumping up for joy,
  • 00:13:53
    maybe turning around three times.
  • 00:13:55
And because she starts praising God all over the place.
  • 00:13:57
And I think she does this because perhaps
  • 00:14:00
it's the first time she felt the baby move.
  • 00:14:03
See, that hint in the Bible about seclusion
  • 00:14:06
could be for a lot of reasons, but I think
  • 00:14:08
it's because Elizabeth was on bed rest.
  • 00:14:10
I think that she had not felt the baby move at all
  • 00:14:13
and maybe had assumed that the baby was stillborn.
  • 00:14:17
Imagine what that would have felt like
  • 00:14:19
to have been down this road long before
  • 00:14:22
time and time and time and time again,
  • 00:14:24
where you were trying and asking God
  • 00:14:26
    to do something for you
  • 00:14:27
and you would get to the point where
  • 00:14:29
maybe there was a baby inside of you,
  • 00:14:30
but you didn't know if it was going to happen,
  • 00:14:32
if it was going to see the light of day.
  • 00:14:35
See if the baby was stillborn,
  • 00:14:37
Elizabeth would have absolutely no way of knowing.
  • 00:14:40
She would have no way of getting it out.
  • 00:14:41
There wasn't a C-section line or an ultrasound machine.
  • 00:14:44
She couldn't call her O.B. and say,
  • 00:14:46
"Hey, brother, I think something is going on."
  • 00:14:49
    Imagine what she was thinking.
  • 00:14:51
Is she thinking, "Is God good?
  • 00:14:53
Would He allow me to have this baby inside of me
  • 00:14:56
and not let me feel its life?"
  • 00:14:58
I think Elizabeth had given up.
  • 00:15:01
I think she had called it quits.
  • 00:15:03
I think she was in that seclusion saying,
  • 00:15:05
"You know what? This is the last time
  • 00:15:08
    I know I'm old.
  • 00:15:09
I shouldn't even be able to have this kid,
  • 00:15:11
but here I am, and I give up."
  • 00:15:14
And that's why it's so much more important
  • 00:15:16
    when Mary arrives.
  • 00:15:18
See, because Mary is carrying the Good News.
  • 00:15:21
Mary is carrying life and the light of the world,
  • 00:15:24
and so the Word of God is present in Elizabeth's house.
  • 00:15:27
And when that happens, the life inside of Mary
  • 00:15:31
makes the life inside of Elizabeth respond
  • 00:15:35
    and her baby leaps.
  • 00:15:38
Elizabeth story is the impossible being made possible,
  • 00:15:42
    which is the Christmas story.
  • 00:15:44
It's impossible things happening all over the place,
  • 00:15:47
and that is the story of Jesus.
  • 00:15:49
See, Elizabeth's story sets the stage
  • 00:15:52
for a coming King who would constantly
  • 00:15:54
do impossible things for years and years
  • 00:15:57
    and ages to come.
  • 00:15:59
Her story and her miracle all lead up to
  • 00:16:02
the birth of Jesus that would change everything.
  • 00:16:08
    - Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly
  • 00:16:10
and ascertain from them what time the star had appeared
  • 00:16:15
And he sent them to Bethlehem saying,
  • 00:16:17
"Go and search diligently for the child.
  • 00:16:19
And when you have found him, bring me word
  • 00:16:22
that I too may come and worship him."
  • 00:16:28
Jesus is born the day that we know as Christmas.
  • 00:16:31
Christmas is here, but it's not the end of the story.
  • 00:16:34
Christmas is about God's promise of peace,
  • 00:16:37
real peace found and resolving your conflict
  • 00:16:40
    with King Jesus.
  • 00:16:41
And how you and I react to the king
  • 00:16:44
determines whether or not you'll have peace.
  • 00:16:47
Here we see how King Herod reacts
  • 00:16:49
to the arrival of King Jesus.
  • 00:16:51
He really didn't want to worship Jesus.
  • 00:16:53
He just says that so he can find Him
  • 00:16:55
    and actually kill Him.
  • 00:16:56
He's always trying to exert his authority,
  • 00:16:58
his power, his might, his wealth
  • 00:17:00
by whatever he drives or whatever chariots he drives,
  • 00:17:03
    whatever he builds.
  • 00:17:05
Herod says, "Bring this kid to me, this baby king.
  • 00:17:07
I hear he's a king, bring him to me.
  • 00:17:09
    I want to worship Him."
  • 00:17:10
He doesn't want to worship Him, he wants to kill Him.
  • 00:17:12
The Magi refused to do it. They take off.
  • 00:17:15
So Herod goes to Bethlehem and he wipes out
  • 00:17:20
all of the infants in the area.
  • 00:17:21
He said, "If Jesus is one of them,
  • 00:17:23
    I'm going to get Him."
  • 00:17:25
    Kills them all.
  • 00:17:26
The crazy thing is that while Herod
  • 00:17:27
didn't get his wish and killing Jesus as an infant,
  • 00:17:30
the good news is there's no human leader,
  • 00:17:32
no matter how powerful, who can beat the plan of God.
  • 00:17:35
    Jesus's birth at Christmas,
  • 00:17:37
while Herod tried to stop it,
  • 00:17:38
it changed everything for the world.
  • 00:17:40
    My life is different.
  • 00:17:42
    Yours may be as well.
  • 00:17:43
People, you know, people in every corner of the globe
  • 00:17:46
and every time history can see
  • 00:17:48
    how King Jesus impacted them.
  • 00:17:50
Not just back then, but now,
  • 00:17:52
everything can change for you this Christmas.
  • 00:18:00
    - The birth of Jesus changed the world 2000 years ago.
  • 00:18:05
But the miracle of Jesus is not far away
  • 00:18:08
    or ancient or mythical.
  • 00:18:10
Christmas is here and now, as miraculous today
  • 00:18:13
as the day Jesus was born.
  • 00:18:16
It changes our world today by changing us.
  • 00:18:20
The good news of Christmas is that
  • 00:18:22
the birth of Jesus changes everything.
  • 00:18:25
It changes chaos to peace, fear to love,
  • 00:18:29
despair to hope, doubt to faith.
  • 00:18:34
God could have rescued the world by force and power.
  • 00:18:37
He could have used a king or a conqueror,
  • 00:18:40
but instead God chose Mary, a teenage girl,
  • 00:18:43
to give birth to Jesus, the promised Savior.
  • 00:18:46
It was a miracle, and Mary believed and rejoiced.
  • 00:18:50
    Mary's fiancé Joseph
  • 00:18:52
did not understand what God had done.
  • 00:18:54
He doubted and planned to divorce her quietly.
  • 00:18:58
But God sent an angel to tell him that
  • 00:19:01
the child Mary carried was from the Holy Spirit
  • 00:19:03
    and that this child
  • 00:19:05
would save His people from their sins.
  • 00:19:07
This was amazing news. This was not easy news.
  • 00:19:11
Mary and Joseph let the power of God
  • 00:19:14
transform their hearts from doubt to faith.
  • 00:19:25
    So much to lose.
  • 00:19:32
    So much to consider
  • 00:19:39
    Nothing to give.
  • 00:19:46
When so much has been given.
  • 00:19:52
    This changes everything
  • 00:20:06
    You put me
  • 00:20:12
between a rock and a hard place
  • 00:20:21
I must break free from this disgrace
  • 00:20:38
It's not just her and me anymore
  • 00:20:45
    Two becomes one, becomes three
  • 00:20:50
    This changes everything
  • 00:21:07
    So much to love.
  • 00:21:14
    There's so much to consider.
  • 00:21:21
    So much to cherish.
  • 00:21:28
    So much to remember.
  • 00:21:33
    This changes everything.
  • 00:21:48
    She put me
  • 00:21:53
between a rock and a hard place
  • 00:22:03
    I must break free
  • 00:22:09
    from this disgrace
  • 00:22:19
It's not just her and me anymore.
  • 00:22:27
    Two becomes one, becomes three
  • 00:22:32
    This changes everything
  • 00:22:47
    This changes everything
  • 00:23:30
    This changes everything
  • 00:23:59
    - If God actually came to the world,
  • 00:24:01
    which is what Christmas celebrates,
  • 00:24:03
    everything is changed,
  • 00:24:06
our hopes, our dreams, our aspirations,
  • 00:24:08
    the importance of the things
  • 00:24:10
I get stressed out about right now, it all changes.
  • 00:24:13
The birth of Jesus changes everything
  • 00:24:15
and that everything previous in world history
  • 00:24:18
has been leading up to this moment.
  • 00:24:19
That's why we date time after Him.
  • 00:24:22
All of these other characters were
  • 00:24:25
all part of God's Plan and the story at Christmas.
  • 00:24:28
They all contributed to the Christmas story
  • 00:24:30
    in a big way.
  • 00:24:31
Elizabeth, she shows it by faith
  • 00:24:33
    the impossible was made possible.
  • 00:24:35
Gabriel was preparing to deliver this message
  • 00:24:38
of news for hundreds of years.
  • 00:24:39
Even somebody who wasn't human, an angel.
  • 00:24:42
Herod had tried to stop it, and ultimately he failed.
  • 00:24:46
Herod later goes on to die a brutal death
  • 00:24:48
that I detailed a lot in the previous episode.
  • 00:24:51
You probably want to check that out.
  • 00:24:53
I won't talk about it right now, because this is Christmas.
  • 00:24:55
It might gross you out on Christmas.
  • 00:24:57
But his kingdom is in ruins.
  • 00:24:59
Jesus lived on as the Savior and the Son of God
  • 00:25:03
and God overcame the evil in this world,
  • 00:25:05
the evil that was personified in Herod
  • 00:25:08
and replace it with peace, the Prince of Peace.
  • 00:25:13
Who gets to be under the rule of the Prince of Peace?
  • 00:25:16
    Anybody who would put themselves
  • 00:25:18
under the rule of King Jesus.
  • 00:25:21
The Book of John 1:12-13, it says this:
  • 00:25:44
When we come into relationship with Jesus,
  • 00:25:46
    it's not a human decision, it's a godly decision.
  • 00:25:49
He's been wooing us and when we come into His family,
  • 00:25:52
    we're born into His family.
  • 00:25:54
It's not of our own might, not have our own power,
  • 00:25:57
but of the power of God coming under the rule of Jesus.
  • 00:26:01
You and I can choose to either be like Herod
  • 00:26:04
and hold tight to your little bit of power,
  • 00:26:07
or you can choose the peace that Jesus gives
  • 00:26:09
    by coming into our lives.
  • 00:26:12
The last year and a half has been so stressful
  • 00:26:14
because I've tried to hold on,
  • 00:26:15
hold on to the life that I wanted to have,
  • 00:26:17
hold on to the way I thought life should be operating.
  • 00:26:20
I was just holding on tight, clenched fists,
  • 00:26:23
like Herod was, like maybe you are.
  • 00:26:26
We get so angry and so upset because
  • 00:26:28
we're coming under the rule of ourselves,
  • 00:26:30
having things the way we want it.
  • 00:26:32
And when we're like that and upset,
  • 00:26:35
    we can't be at peace,
  • 00:26:38
we can't have peace with people who are around us,
  • 00:26:40
we can't have peace with ourselves.
  • 00:26:43
But when we come under the authority of King Jesus
  • 00:26:48
there is a power and a peace
  • 00:26:51
    that passes all understanding.
  • 00:26:53
So how are you going to react
  • 00:26:55
and respond the story of Jesus?
  • 00:26:56
Is this going to be just another religious holiday
  • 00:26:59
where you sing the same songs,
  • 00:27:01
    you do the same things,
  • 00:27:02
and you open the same presents
  • 00:27:03
and you wish somebody gave you a better presents?
  • 00:27:06
Is this going to be the same thing
  • 00:27:08
where you're with people who drain you,
  • 00:27:10
maybe out of towners or just something like that,
  • 00:27:12
or the same thing where you we have a drink
  • 00:27:14
or two too many because it's Christmas, after all.
  • 00:27:17
And then you just repeat the same year again
  • 00:27:19
and it goes on and on?
  • 00:27:21
Or would this be different where there's a new way,
  • 00:27:24
a new thing you could do, a new thing
  • 00:27:26
of putting yourself under the rule of Jesus?
  • 00:27:29
    I hope you choose that.
  • 00:27:31
I hope you don't just keep doing the same old, same old.
  • 00:27:34
I want your life to be better.
  • 00:27:35
Jesus wants your life to be better.
  • 00:27:37
He wants you to come under His authority
  • 00:27:40
and have the power that only He offers.
  • 00:27:42
If you've never given your life to Him
  • 00:27:44
or you want to give your life to Him
  • 00:27:45
in a fresh way right now,
  • 00:27:47
    let me pray for you
  • 00:27:49
and you can just kind of say this prayer after me.
  • 00:27:51
Say: King Jesus, I want You in my life.
  • 00:27:56
I want Your Kingdom to come into my life.
  • 00:28:00
I release my grip on all the things that
  • 00:28:03
I've been trying to control and overpower.
  • 00:28:06
And I ask You, forgive me for operating by my power
  • 00:28:09
and doing things that I just shouldn't have done.
  • 00:28:12
Fill me with Your Spirit and the best I can
  • 00:28:16
I'll follow you the rest of my life. Amen.
  • 00:28:22
When that happens there's just sort of a calm
  • 00:28:25
    that comes to us.
  • 00:28:27
I cracked a little bit earlier
  • 00:28:28
on some of our traditions that might
  • 00:28:29
just be mindlessly done again and again.
  • 00:28:31
But one of the wonderful things about Christmas
  • 00:28:33
is that there are traditions that are really meaningful.
  • 00:28:35
    Opening gifts around a tree
  • 00:28:37
    can be incredibly meaningful.
  • 00:28:39
So also singing a classic song
  • 00:28:43
that people in churches and people of faith
  • 00:28:45
all over the world are singing right now.
  • 00:28:49
It's a Christmas tradition for us.
  • 00:28:52
It's called Silent Night, and it can bring us peace.
  • 00:28:58
    Silent night, holy night!
  • 00:29:07
All is calm, and all is bright
  • 00:29:16
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child
  • 00:29:25
Holy infant so tender and mild
  • 00:29:34
    Sleep in heavenly peace
  • 00:29:42
    Sleep in heavenly peace
  • 00:29:53
That silent night means that there is hope
  • 00:29:56
    and peace available to you.
  • 00:29:57
If you prayed that prayer for the first time
  • 00:29:59
or you want to know more about
